Mercury Retrograde Periods in 2023
Although not quite as popular as Sun sign astrology, “Mercury Retrograde” has certainly become a buzzword–or buzz phrase–in recent years.
What is Mercury Retrograde? Three, and sometimes four, times a year, the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward in the sky for a period of approximately 3 weeks. “Appears” is the keyword here, because, technically speaking, no planet actually moves backward in their orbits around the Sun. In fact, they don’t even slow down. Retrograde-station-direct cycles are essentially illusions that result from our point of view from Earth, simply because the Earth is also orbiting the Sun at a different speed than the other planets.
Mercury turns retrograde more frequently than any other planet. It can never be more than 28 degrees from the Sun, and whenever it reaches its furthest distance from the Sun, it changes direction.
As the planet of communication, Mercury retrograde tends to breed a certain level of confusion. Mercury rules our “lower” mind—how we perceive and interpret information that we receive from our environment, and how we relay that information to others.
Mercury has rulership over such things as speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail and shipping, and so forth. All of these areas of life are affected when Mercury is functioning in a sluggish state. Decision-making is challenged during Mercury retrograde. Needless to say, it is not advised to sign contracts, engage in important decision-making, or launch a new business. Delays and challenges are more probable with Mercury retrograde. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting.
During these periods, it’s best to check and double-check your work, emails, and paperwork. Watch what you say, because it may not come out, or be received, the way you intended. Try to be understanding if you receive remarks that don’t go over well. Double-check that the person who uttered those words really meant it the way you thought they did! Asking “are you sure you meant to say that?” might help.
Get in touch with yourself during this period–it’s an excellent cycle for discovering new ways of looking at life and at yourself. It’s also an ideal cycle in which to discover new ways of communicating your ideas and thoughts.

Venus Retrograde in 2023
What is Venus Retrograde? Occasionally, Venus appears to be moving backward in the sky. Venus is Retrograde approximately 40-43 days every 18 months.
As the planet of love and values, Venus retrograde periods are times when we re-assess what–and who–we value. It is a period that most astrologers consider inopportune for getting married or starting a new relationship. Brand new financial undertakings are not advised during this period as well. There may be delays or confusion in relationships and financial affairs. Read more about Venus Retrograde cycles.
In 2023, Venus has a retrograde cycle, as follows:

Mars Retrograde in 2023
What is Mars Retrograde? Occasionally, Mars appears to be moving backward in the sky. Mars is Retrograde approximately 58-81 days every 2+ years.
When Mars is in its retrograde cycle, we are forced to re-assess our current projects, our approach to getting what we want, and our desire nature. Rather than directly asserting our desires, we tend towards introspection.
While Mars in direct motion is direct, straightforward, assertive, and aggressive, with Mars in retrograde motion, Mars energy is essentially turned inward–it’s internalized, intensified, personalized, and perhaps pressurized. We can be hesitant about taking action, second-guessing our instincts or our natural impulses rather than acting upon them. The way we react to situations under normal conditions doesn’t necessarily work for us now, or we don’t exactly trust it… Read more about Mars Retrograde cycles.
In 2023, we experience only the tail-end of a Mars retrograde cycle until January 12th 2023–a cycle that began in October 2022.

Outer Planet Highlights in 2023 – Time Line
Outer planet transits in the year 2023, excerpted from the Day Watch Report Package. In the Day Watch report package, the following transits are combined with personal transits.
22 January: Uranus Stationary Direct 05:58 pm EST Tran-Tran 14° Taurus 56′
Uranus Stationary Direct
07 March: Saturn conjunct Pisces 08:33 am EST Tran-Tran 00° Pisces 00′
The next couple of years will produce the end of many illusions and hard times for those who perpetrate them. Matters of unconfirmed belief are likely to be tested, and those who have relied on intuition alone to get by may have to take a more tangible and practical approach. Real and imagined spirituality are set side by side to see which passes the test.
23 March: Pluto conjunct Aquarius 08:12 am EDT Tran-Tran 00° Aquarius 00′
A generation-long period begins in which spreading equality of opportunity is a prime cultural force, a time to re-forge society and hand it to the common people. Independence of operation is the order of the day, as is great expansion. The resulting generation, however, will have a hard time holding together what results as a unity.
01 May: Pluto SRx (Stationary Retrograde) 1:08 pm EDT Tran-Tran 00° Aquarius 22’Rx
Pluto Stationary Retrograde
16 May: Jupiter conjunct Taurus 1:19 pm EDT Tran-Tran 00° Taurus 00′
A year of slow expansion is now ahead, during which the best-laid plans take a long time to lay down, but once they’re in place, there’s no stopping them. The future looks bright, but gradual, and the sure-footed approach is the accepted way to go. It’s all about doing it well, making it all come true at the right time. Read more about the Jupiter in Taurus transit.
17 May: Jupiter square Pluto 09:10 pm EDT Tran-Tran 00° Taurus 18′
In the enthusiasm for a new cause or idea, you can sometimes back it up with a little too much or ill-placed force and break the very thing that you want to sustain. Or, you can overestimate the effectiveness and reach of your powers and wind up going “a bridge too far.” There is a general climate right now for making that judgment error, and once you have made it, there usually is no going back. You may equally find yourself the recipient of this kind of pressure, and should you see it happening, don’t fight it and have it go to its logical hurtful conclusion, but don’t give in, either. Just make yourself scarce until the situation blows over. In the survival game, the fittest often know to flee. Read more about the Jupiter square Pluto transit.
11 June: Pluto conjunct Capricorn 05:47 pm EDT Tran-Tran 30° Capricorn 00’Rx
Note that Pluto only entered Aquarius in March, but it’s now retreating back into Capricorn for a short stay before it heads back into Aquarius in January 2024. This cycle prompts a culture value shift toward getting business done as if it were a mission. It can create vast wealth, as it will have little to hold it back morally – but the generation spawned by this period will have to redesign the great structures so made in a deconstruction of what went before. Like when cement skyscrapers were first built – they were touted to last longer than the pyramids, but a generation later they began to fall to the wrecking ball.
17 June: Saturn SRx (Stationary Retrograde) 1:27 pm EDT Tran-Tran 07° Pisces 13’Rx
Saturn Stationary Retrograde
19 June: Jupiter sextile Saturn 11:52 am EDT Tran-Tran 07° Taurus 12′
This year is what might be termed a time of profit taking and cashing in on positions taken morally and financially and of establishing newer and more solid structures on which to base both income and moral life. It is a time to dispense with prejudice but not abandon caution, to reach out to others but without selling out to them. This is the overall background on which your personal life is being played, so you will have to roll with it where necessary, though you may not now, or ever, be in the thick of it. If you are aware of the larger picture going on around you, however, you can only benefit from the trends you find yourself immersed in. Read more about the Jupiter sextile Saturn transit.
