Understanding eclipses – overview
New! Solar Eclipse – December 14, 2020
Lunar Eclipse – November 30, 2020
Or, skip to The meaning of eclipses in the houses
Lunation (or New Moon and Full Moon) charts have been used by Mundane Astrologers for many centuries. In later times, people began to compare them to their natal charts.
The New Moon, or Conjunction, is used when you want to start something new or try to break some old patterns. That is the time of the month when you would attempt to start or do these kinds of things. The New Moon is the time of internalizing and looking within yourself.
The Full Moon, or Opposition, is the time when you would try to accomplish the things that were started on a New Moon. The Full Moon is when you look to external events or things get beyond your control.
Things to look at when comparing the Lunation charts to your own:
- Houses that the Sun and Moon are transiting in your natal chart.
- What aspects do the Sun and Moon make to your natal planets? Are the majority of those aspects easy or hard?
- Astrologers also look at the transits to the Lunation charts, particularly to the Moon.
Eclipses
An eclipse is a far more potent lunation. Look to the house the eclipse falls in your natal chart. The affairs of that house will be activated. Does the eclipse fall on a planet in your natal chart? That planet will also be activated. The sign of the eclipse plays a role in the likely events that the eclipse will trigger.
Many people tend to fear eclipses, simply because they often bring about a crisis of sorts that leads to a significant event or change. However, this event or change can be very positive.
Eclipses are tied to changing circumstances. However, we are usually the ones to precipitate or to attract changes because our “inner guides” know that we need it. Human beings are progressive by nature, and although we might stay in situations that are making us miserable for longer than we should, deep down inside we know that change is necessary for growth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Several eclipses occur every single year. They occur in one particular sign and its opposite sign several times in a set spanning about two years approximately every nine years. For example, eclipses occurred along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis from 2001-2003, then 2010-2013, and now from 2020-2021. Although they are notable and important in astrology, the media recently has been making a big deal of these fairly regular occurrences, leaving some in a panic or expecting a lot more from the eclipses than they warrant. It’s important to note that eclipses alone are not responsible for dire events in people’s lives. They’re great for identifying current and upcoming themes in our lives.
Astrological Significance of the Eclipses

***A Solar Eclipse occurs in the sign of Sagittarius on December 14th, 2020.***
About the total Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14, 2020
A Total Solar Eclipse occurs on December 14, 2020, at 11:17 AM EST at 23 degrees and 8 minutes of the sign of Sagittarius. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Jupiter-ruled sign of Sagittarius, our personal belief system, sense of adventure, desire to explore and discover, religious beliefs and personal philosophy, higher education, long-distance travel, morals, foreign languages and cultures, personal truths, sharing ideas, and publishing issues will be a strong focus. This eclipse might challenge these matters and present opportunities for new beginnings.
This total Solar Eclipse New Moon occurs in the sign of Sagittarius. It’s the third eclipse to fall along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis this year, but the first Solar Eclipse in this sign set. This eclipse can be considered another cosmic nudge toward creating a better balance between the need for facts and figures and the need for faith and belief. The focus is on new beginnings related to our personal interests and philosophy, as well as our worldview.
Eclipses have the power to set up themes for the coming six months. We’ll be addressing matters related to faith, optimism, belief systems, philosophy, sharing ideas, and our sense of adventure. We may feel the need or desire to start fresh in these areas.
Occurring in Sagittarius, we are called upon to:
- increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us;
- muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking
- gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture”
- transcend the details of mundane existence
- work on positive thinking as a way of life
- take an exam, apply for or begin a new higher learning course, or travel
- nurture faith, hope, and vision being careful to moderate our expectations.
We can too easily get lost in the details of mundane existence. We might discover ways to transcend these details of day-to-day life and nurture our faith, hope, and vision. Because Sagittarius thinks in big terms, we may have a tendency to overdo our expectations or to assert ourselves too blindly, although its trine to Mars helps us assert ourselves with enthusiasm. It’s time to be a little more adventurous, and to set the stage for reaping the rewards from our braveries, as little or big as they may be.
We should try to avoid jumping to conclusions and asserting ourselves without considering others’ feelings and reactions. There is a big difference between asserting ourselves from a place of healthy confidence, and asserting ourselves brashly and blindly which can give us a false sense of confidence or bravery when doing so respectfully is best.
Since this is a Solar Eclipse, we may feel wiped out, ignored, or overruled before we are motivated to make a big change or new beginning. In the days surrounding the eclipse, it’s best to take in, observe, and let our intuition work for us. It’s not the time to push.
Eclipses can seem to wipe us out before we begin fresh, slowly but steadily rebuilding our energy and motivation.
With this potent Sagittarius energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Archer–optimistic, enthusiastic, adventurous, honest, outspoken, independent–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives.
Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown.
An eclipse occurs close to the nodal axis, and this eclipse is closer to the South Node of the Moon. Eclipses close to the South Node tend to feel a little more challenging than those conjunct or closer to the North Node, as we might concentrate too much on the idea that we might have to let something go. Those of us with planets and points strongly stimulated by this eclipse can feel especially drained and tired, both physically and emotionally. There is a need to let go, forgive, cleanse, and release. Once we do, we re-energize.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Sagittarius in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. This is the third eclipse in a series falling along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis. The first eclipses in the series falling along this axis occurred in November (a Lunar Eclipse in Gemini) and June (a Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius).
- Penumbral LUNAR Eclipse June 5th, 2020 at 15:12:15 at 15° Sagittarius 34′
- Penumbral LUNAR Eclipse November 30th, 2020 at 4:29:32 at 8° Gemini 38′
- Total SOLAR Eclipse December 14th, 2020 at 11:16:26 at 23° Sagittarius 08′
- Total LUNAR Eclipse May 26th, 2021 at 7:13:43 at 5° Sagittarius 26′
- Annular SOLAR Eclipse June 10th, 2021 at 6:52:29 at 19° Gemini 47′
- Total SOLAR Eclipse December 4th, 2021 at 2:42:51 at 12° Sagittarius 22′
Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will most feel its effects on a personal level.
Solar eclipses occurred at approximately the same degree as this December 2020 eclipse on December 14, 1955, December 13, 1974, December 15, 1982, and December 14, 2001. It might help to think back to these periods and consider the themes that surrounded your life at those times (the period, not the precise date) in order to get a better understanding of what the current eclipse series might mean for you, if applicable. You might also think about issues that emerged in the previous half-year, which can now re-emerge or continue to need attention.
It’s useful to know that eclipses occur along a sign axis in sets every nine years.
The last time we had a set of Gemini-Sagittarius eclipses was December 2010 to May 2013, and this can also give clues as to life departments and themes may emerge through this set of Gemini-Sagittarius eclipses.
Gemini-Sagittarius Eclipse sets (upcoming, current, and some in recent history):
- June 2029 to June 2031
- June 2020 to December 2021
- December 2010 to May 2013
- December 2001 to November 2003
- December 1991 to May 1994
- June 1982 to November 1984
Aligned with Mercury and the South Node, trine Mars, square Neptune. We should watch for the tendency to fall back on distancing ourselves from problems and responsibilities.
We need to make changes in our thought patterns, particularly in terms of ridding ourselves of old habits.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 8 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 18 to 28 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.
It’s useful to note other aspects active at the time of the eclipse, even if they are not directly aspecting the eclipse point, as they have more staying power with their imprint. The same chart with additional points:
If this eclipse stimulates your 1st-7th house axis, you are called upon to strike a balance between relationship and self. Issues of personal courage, confidence, and independence come to the fore over the next year. You may, for example, receive a cosmic push towards expressing yourself more creatively (especially if 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the first house) and experience an increased drive to take charge of your life. Issues surrounding personal appearance, the body, and one’s image become especially important and, in some cases, critical. Basically, you will be learning to stand on your own two feet! This sequence of eclipses will alert you to the need to interact with others–either the public or through a close partnership (especially if 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the seventh house). For some, marriage or divorce will be an issue. For most, carving out a personal identity that includes a significant other who furthers their own personal growth will come into focus. This eclipse should give you a push towards a stronger identity or sense of purposefulness through a close partnership.
If this eclipse stimulates your 2nd-8th house axis, you will be called upon to strike a balance between your own needs for security and comfort and the same needs of other people, likely those of a significant other. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the second house, personal finances will come into strong focus. How well have you taken care of your finances? More importantly, have you taken charge of your personal sense of security? If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the eighth house, issues of sexuality and spirituality may be a stronger focus. In either case, issues of shared resources, sexuality, and possessions are featured. With this eclipse, it’s time to start fresh with regards to how you go about satisfying your needs for security and comfort.
If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the second house, take charge of your life by taking the necessary steps to make yourself feel good and secure. You are called upon to make a stand and to tend to your comfort levels. If you do so, the positive effects will ricochet back into your intimate life. If you continue to tend to your partner’s comfort levels while ignoring your own, feelings of resentment and neglect can infect your relationships. Get in touch with what feels most comfortable for you, and the intimacy level in your relationship will step up a notch. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the eighth house, you are learning about the comfort levels of others. Essentially, you are learning to share and to surrender yourself (in a balanced manner!) to intimacy.
If the 3rd-9th house axis is stimulated by this eclipse, issues surrounding learning and sharing knowledge will come to the fore. For some, issues surrounding attention to one’s immediate environment, and branching out and beyond it, are stimulated. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the third house, you are receiving a cosmic push to become more active in your immediate environment (neighborhood, with siblings/relatives, etc.), and/or to learn and communicate facts that fuel your opinions.
If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the ninth house, you will be learning to expand your horizons, either through contact with people from an entirely different background than yours, travel, or higher learning. Your personal philosophy will be changing, and this eclipse gives you a push towards adopting beliefs that truly work for you in the real world. Other possible issues stimulated include transportation and mobility (for example, some may be learning to depend on others for getting from point A to point B, and others may be learning to take charge of their own mobility), running errands and tending to one’s daily life effectively, and learning about one’s need for self-expression through adventure.

Solar Eclipse
If the 4th-10th house axis is stimulated by this eclipse, issues surrounding public and private lives, as well as attention to career and to family, are stimulated. The fourth house rules our instinctual needs, the domestic scene, our needs for security, and our focus on family and home life as well as relationships with family. The tenth house rules our needs for status, our career and reputation, our worldly ambitions, structure, and our drive for success. Striking a balance between these issues is the focus of this sequence of eclipses. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the fourth house, it’s time to take steps to improve your family and home life. This eclipse is the first cosmic push for you to take charge of your private life.
If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the tenth house, you are called upon to pay more attention to your career and public life, and to take charge of this important part of your life. Either way, this can play out in a number of ways. Some may have to make some critical decisions due to situations in the life that force them to make choices between career and family goals. Some people are promoted or their career takes a new direction (especially if an eclipse occurs close to the Midheaven). The challenge is to find a healthy balance–to improve home life while at the same time tending to one’s career needs.
If this eclipse stimulates your 5th-11th house axis, social activity is the focus. The need to be appreciated by others, and the need for togetherness with others, comes into play. A love affair may begin or end under this influence. New contacts with others may also occur. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the fifth, you will learn to let go of a fear of taking risks, and to develop the courage to strike out on your own individual and creative path without fear. You are called upon to deal with others in a more personal, involved, and loving manner, rather than falling back on reason and intellect, which detaches you from your feelings. This series of eclipses is about learning to take personal risks, which requires a certain amount of self-confidence.
If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the eleventh, you will be learning about letting go of your attachment to the drama of romance and personal relationships, as well as your willfulness. You are called upon to learn about the value of the team. You may need to give freedom to your romantic partner instead of expecting him or her to follow a script of your own making. You learn the value of brotherly love and the benefits of a sense of belonging to a community. Events are such that you move towards a more objective approach to your life and you cultivate true friendships.
If this eclipse stimulates your 6th-12th house axis, issues of work and service, as well as health (both mental/spiritual, and physical), come into focus. If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the sixth house, you are called upon to deal with the details and practicalities of everyday life, to become more organized, and to take charge of your routines. It’s time to formulate some clear goals and plans. Circumstances are such that you need to develop some healthy habits, routines, and schedules. Believing in a grand plan is fine, but practical concerns need to be dealt with as well. Recognizing your personal limitations in terms of just how much you can give to others and just how much compassion and understanding you can show is essential now. It’s time to structure your life.
If 23 degrees Sagittarius is in the twelfth house, over the next year you are called upon to rid yourself of guilt about under-performing, and to develop faith and trust in a larger more spiritual plan. It’s time to let go of some of your fears that you are not doing enough, to develop more compassion and understanding of others, and to be humble, feeling safe in the knowledge that you (and others) are not perfect. It’s time to let go of some of your obsessions with rules, details, and fears of not doing things perfectly. When this axis is stimulated, issues of guilt, worry, and anxiety become paramount.

***A Lunar Eclipse occurs in the sign of Gemini on November 30th, 2020.***
The Moon is Full in Gemini on November 30, 2020, at 4:30 AM EST.
Astrological Significance of the Lunar Eclipse in Gemini
About the Lunar Eclipse on November 30th, 2020
As noted above, a Lunar eclipse is an especially potent lunation, in this case, a potent Full Moon. Lunar eclipses are relationship-oriented. The “crisis” that these eclipses tend to elicit is a crisis of lack–a time when we suddenly realize a great need or want. The impact of the crisis can act to sever a relationship–it’s possible. But it can also bring two people together with a sudden awareness of a great need for each other.
Although Lunar eclipses are more relationship-oriented than Solar eclipses, they are not always about relationships between two people. They can trigger awareness of need in other areas of our lives, such as our relationship to work, to our health and bodies, and so forth. This is a time when matters come to light–things that have been brewing under the surface.
When a Full Moon occurs, we can suddenly burst forth with proclamations and outpours that seem fresh and new, simply because they are not yet rationalized. A Lunar eclipse is a more potent Full Moon, and its effects tend to last longer. Many astrologers believe that the effects of a Lunar eclipse last approximately six months.
A Full Moon occurs on November 30, 2020, when the Sun in Sagittarius forms an opposition to the Moon in Gemini. The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time – a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships.
When a Full Moon is a Lunar Eclipse like this one, it’s a more potent, powerful lunation that stimulates turning points and epiphanies.
There is more to this unfolding story since this eclipse set occurring along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis runs from June 2020 to December 2021. This one is the second eclipse along this sign axis.
Full Moons and Lunar Eclipses bring issues in our lives to fulfillment. Our emotions are heightened, and there is often some sort of drama involved with the house, sign, and any contacted planets activated by the Full Moon.
Look to 8-9 degrees of Gemini/Sagittarius in your own chart (allow up to about a 5-degree orb when examining the planets and points the eclipse aspects). This Lunar Eclipse gives us a cosmic push to make needed changes in our lives. The areas of life activated by the eclipse may see dramatic turns, after which the path is clear to move forward. Note that whatever happens at this time is nothing truly new. The issues have been brewing inside of us, and emotions have been building. Something comes to light at the time of the Lunar Eclipse, and if we get in touch with our emotions, we can get a better idea of what needs to change, or what needs to go.
The final eclipse in this set of Gemini/Sagittarius eclipses will happen in December 2021.
This Lunar Eclipse in Gemini heightens our awareness of flaws in the structures of our lives, particularly in our communications and transportation systems. Decisions made now are emotionally-driven. Some of us will be irritable and won’t know precisely why. Some may see only what they want to see while their common sense or objectivity is temporarily “eclipsed.” Discoveries are exaggerated, so keep this in mind.
Even so, this drama serves a purpose, and while we probably shouldn’t jump to act, we should pay attention to our feelings and discoveries.
As well, and perhaps ironically, we’re awakening to the need for facts to back up our ideas and beliefs, and in the wake of this eclipse, it’s important to connect with this purpose. Yes, emotions are heightened now, but a Gemini eclipse wants us to pay attention to facts and figures, not only instincts or beliefs that we’ve held dear.
With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our lives. However, these new feelings and revelations are emotional ones, as there is a sense of emotions bursting forth into our consciousness.
It’s time to express ourselves and to let things out of our systems. Of course, we might want to exercise some care while doing so, knowing that what is coming out of us is new and not particularly rational as yet.
This is a time to work on clearing up past patterns that have been holding us back from personal fulfillment, particularly those that are communication-centered or that revolve around our attitudes, expressions, gestures, studies, and mobility. There will be more work to come in these areas, but for now, we are experiencing a greater awareness of problems and especially lacks or flaws, and they’re significant.
Through events, circumstances, and epiphanies occurring around the time of this eclipse, we learn that we need to get in touch with our needs to handle facts and figures, back up our beliefs with facts, and communicate/listen more clearly and effectively with one another.
We become aware of where we have been overdoing our attachment to beliefs and opinions.
Full Moons are always good for magnifying pre-existing problems so that we can see where to bring back balance. Our larger work should be on reaching a fair balance. Enlightenment now provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs, which can ultimately lead to positive actions and decisions.
With the Gemini-Sagittarius axis involved, this Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at the needs, lacks, and wants in our lives concerning the balance between Gemini-ruled and Sagittarius ruled areas of life. The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity is a mental axis, where Gemini represents the “lower mind,” and Sagittarius represents the “higher mind.”
Sagittarius symbolizes the quest for meaning and ideas that expand upon the here and now. Gemini recognizes the need to improve and perfect its immediate environment or neighborhood, while Sagittarius stimulates us to venture beyond. Neglecting either end of the axis will backfire. Ideally, we find a balance between the energies, and this is what the Lunar Eclipse invites us to do.
This eclipse is about communication, attitude, and our sense of adventure. Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out.
A sudden awareness of a lack in our lives provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs within the context of the house polarity where the eclipse occurs in our natal charts. Relationships may be challenged, broken, or strengthened dramatically at this time. Our discovery is emotionally charged and dramatic. Epiphanies are likely to lead to propel us into affirmative action, although there can be some level of chaos initially.
On November 28, 2012, a Lunar Eclipse fell in Gemini at almost the same degree as the one occurring in 2020. It might be helpful to think back to issues in your life that were in effect around this time to get an idea of how this 2020 Lunar Eclipse affects you. Others at a similar degree occurred on November 29, 1993, and November 29, 1974.
You can also look back in a general sense to eclipse sets occurring along the same Gemini-Sagittarius axis as the current one in effect from June 2020 to December 2021. This can help give more information gleaned by looking to the past to understand themes in the present and future. The last time we had a set of Gemini-Sagittarius eclipses was from December 2010 to May 2013. Before that, a set occurred from December 2001 to November 2003, and another from December 1991 to May 1994. These are also periods of your past, if applicable, that may have had similar themes to this current eclipse set. Of course, even if they occurred at similar degrees, the other planets were represented differently, so the issues will not be identical, but specific themes can re-emerge.
Gemini-Sagittarius Eclipse sets (upcoming, current, and some in recent history):
- June 2029 to June 2031
- June 2020 to December 2021
- December 2010 to May 2013
- December 2001 to November 2003
- December 1991 to May 1994
- June 1982 to November 1984
The following lists the set of eclipses falling along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis in this set only (there were other eclipses between these since they overlap – the full chronological list of eclipses is at the end of this page):
This lunation occurs at 8 degrees and 38 minutes of Gemini, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 4 to 14 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.
The Lunar eclipse on November 30th, 2020 is an Annular Lunar Eclipse.
A crisis of sorts (which can be a crisis of consciousness) or sudden awareness of a lack in our lives provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs within the context of the house polarity where the eclipse occurs in our natal charts. Relationships may be challenged, broken, or strengthened dramatically at this time. Our discovery is emotionally charged and dramatic. Epiphanies are likely at this time as we become acutely aware of our lack. This understanding can propel us into affirmative action.
If this Lunar eclipse forms a conjunction (aligns with) a planet in your chart, you may feel its intensity more than others. If the Lunar Eclipse is conjunct your Sun, for example, it can act as a charge of energy. The desire –or necessity– to turn over a new leaf is strong. A significant other or the public can play a large role in the events of your life now. In major aspect to the Moon, a Lunar Eclipse can trigger major changes in your living situation and personal life, including personal relationships. Circumstances that significantly change your daily routine and domestic world can arise.
Possible issues for the eclipse’s transit to natal houses: A Lunar Eclipse in the first house, it may be time to change your image or redefine your personality in some manner. Finding a balance between autonomy and dependence is what this eclipse is about for you. Your emotions are on your sleeve right now. It is a good time to put your needs first, but doing so with respect for others will take you further. Whether you can succeed as a leader is “tested” right now. There may be some drama involving a significant other.
A Lunar Eclipse in the second house, you may get a cosmic push to make necessary financial changes in your life. Sharing issues come into focus, as do issues of power–what’s yours and what’s mine. Your comfort zones matter, and now is the time to take care of your own needs without eclipsing the needs of others. A financial settlement, the beginning or end of a particular debt, and other such scenarios can be part of the picture now.
A Lunar Eclipse in the third house, there may be some sort of drama surrounding communication, modes of transportation, schooling, mobility, neighbors, or siblings. Daily routines can change dramatically. There may be a major event in the life of a sibling. There could be a publishing offer or you might be in a position to promote yourself. Travel or education plans may come to fruition. You might gain an entirely different perspective on a matter.
A Lunar Eclipse in the fourth house, domestic conditions are illuminated. House repairs, family dramas, and other such issues need serious attention. The demands of your personal life are now paramount. Striking a balance between energy spent on work and energy spent on domestic matters is essential now. Balanced attention to your public and personal lives is what you need to focus on. It’s time to prioritize. A major career project can come to fruition or completion.
A Lunar Eclipse in the fifth house, a romantic affair may be tested. If love is true, there’s nothing to fear. The demands of your larger goals in life may have been eclipsing your pleasure-seeking activities. Also possible, your children may be going through their own changes and “stages”, and need more attention now, or a child could be experiencing a major new beginning. Some might have a child. A new creative project might begin now.
A Lunar Eclipse in the sixth, there could be changes necessary in your job or health routines. You can use this surge of emotional energy to make positive changes to your routines. Do something to improve your work conditions if they are annoying you. Get going on your exercise or nutrition program that you know you have to do in order to feel more balanced. A work project or a job itself can begin or end now. A physical or mental health issue might come to light.
A Lunar Eclipse in the seventh house, partnerships may be tested, but there is nothing to fear if the relationship is strong. The seventh house represents an important one-to-one relationship–a marriage partner, significant other, business partner, or an adversary. It’s time to strike a balance between your own needs and those of another. It’s time to compromise and negotiate. You might suddenly find yourself with more social opportunities, or you might acquire many new clients.
A Lunar Eclipse in the eighth house, some drama with regards to a spouse’s income, or your taxes, debts, and investments, may occur on a mundane level. It may be time to settle some of your debts, financial or otherwise. What makes you feel comfortable and secure needs to be balanced with attention to other people’s needs and comfort levels. There can be new money coming into your life.
A Lunar Eclipse in the ninth house, your personal beliefs may be tested. Your hunger for adventure or learning may come into focus. All of the attention you’ve been giving to mundane affairs can have you wondering when you’re going to have some fun. You want to take a leap of faith now. There may be an important beginning or culmination in education. If you are in business, a writer, or the like, you might reach a wider audience.
A Lunar Eclipse in the tenth house, you may need to review and change your career goals. Career matters come to a head, but as the seventh house from the fourth, so might a personal, domestic, family, or house and home matter. You’re called to perform, possibly on a moment’s notice, and it’s best to keep your cool and do whatever you can to show your competence.
A Lunar Eclipse in the eleventh house, friendships may be tested, or your relationship to groups or organizations. You’re looking for validation from friends and group activities now. There can be a major event involving a child or a romantic partner, or a culmination of a creative project can occur at this time.
A Lunar Eclipse in the twelfth house, you may recognize an overwhelming need for rest and spiritual renewal. You’ve been busy with all sorts of everyday activities, deeply involved in your work and routines. It’s time to balance your life with some downtime–otherwise, you simply don’t feel whole. There can be exposure of a private or even clandestine matter in some cases. Secrets can emerge at this time, or there can be a desire to do something private, secret, or risky. A work project can come to fruition.

Astrological Significance of the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn
About the Lunar Eclipse on July 5th, 2020
The Lunar eclipse on July 5th, 2020, occurs when the Moon is at 13-14 degrees of Capricorn, opposing the Sun at 13-14 degrees Cancer, and is a Partial Lunar Eclipse. It’s the final one occurring in the signs of Cancer and Capricorn.
Lunar Eclipses are about relationships and polarities. With the Cancer-Capricorn axis involved, this Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at our needs, lacks, and wants. The Cancer-Capricorn polarity concerns the balance between the private life, domesticity, the need for a home base, and nurturance (represented by Cancer) versus the public life, career, reputation, and accountability (represented by Capricorn). Attachments and love are ruled by Cancer, while achievements and rewards/punishments are ruled by Capricorn. In some ways, this polarity deals with the balance between unconditional love and conditional love.
Cancer encourages us to value our home base and our roots, while Capricorn persuades us to consider our sense of duty and responsibility along public or professional lines. While Cancer may be content to be dependent, Capricorn urges us to be grown-up and responsible. Cancer represents the origin, and Capricorn represents the goal. The Full Moon illuminates these conflicts.
Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what this Full Moon invites us to do. This lunation is about balancing our commitment to our career (or responsibilities to the outside world) and families (or personal life).
Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the coming weeks and months, we will discover what this means for us. For now, we can’t sit on our feelings. We need to express them.
Full Moons and Lunar Eclipses bring issues in our lives to fulfillment. Our emotions are heightened, and there is often some sort of drama involved with the house, sign, and any contacted planets activated by the Full Moon.
Look to 13 to 14 degrees of Capricorn/Cancer in your own chart (allow up to about a 5-degree orb when examining the planets and points the eclipse aspects).
This Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn is bound to thrust us into a state of heightened awareness of flaws in the structures of our lives, in our careers, with authority figures, and with our reputations. Decisions made now are emotionally-driven. Some of us will be irritable and won’t know exactly why. Others might be in a kind of daze, seeing only what they want to see while their common sense or objectivity is temporarily “eclipsed.” Discoveries are exaggerated, so keep this in mind. Even so, this drama serves a purpose, and while we probably shouldn’t jump to act, we should pay attention to our feelings and discoveries.
With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our own lives.
Retrograde Mercury is in strong focus in the eclipse chart, and there can be a new understanding of an old problem. Pressure to do or say something is on us now but is unlikely to serve us well.
Full Moons are always good for magnifying pre-existing problems so that we can see where to bring back balance. Our larger work should be on reaching a good balance between focus on personal and private lives and our professional or public duties, responsibilities, and goals. Enlightenment now provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs, which can ultimately lead to positive actions and decisions. There can be a heightened awareness of flaws in our current systems and structures. There can also be an urgent or sudden need/desire to express ourselves, and a strong compulsion to come to a resolution of a problem.
This eclipse is the last one in a series of eclipses that fall along the Cancer-Capricorn axis. It can be viewed as the final cosmic push regarding the themes it is stimulating. This is a time to clear up past patterns that have been holding us back from personal fulfillment. The greater awareness of problems and especially lacks or flaws in our relationships that have been stimulated with recent eclipses can motivate us to take action.
On July 7, 2009, and on July 5, 2001, Lunar Eclipses fell in Capricorn at around the same degree as the one occurring this year. It might be helpful to think back to issues in your life that were in effect around this time in order to get an idea of how this 2020 Lunar Eclipse affects you. Others at a similar degree occurred on July 6, 1982, July 6, 1963, and July 6, 1944.
You can also look back in a general sense to eclipse sets occurring along the Cancer-Capricorn axis as the current one in effect from July 2018 to July 2020 for more information gleaned by looking to the past to understand themes in the present and future. The last time we had a set of Cancer-Capricorn eclipses was from July 2009 to July 2011.

General: The Meaning of the New Moon in the Houses
The following interpretations come from the Day Watch report. See our interpretations of the New Moon in houses here.
New Moon in 1st House This New Moon marks a time of personal beginnings, when you find yourself shot into the limelight and all eyes turn toward you to see what you’re going to do next. This may be somewhat startling, as it’s rather different than what last month brought, and you will need to step up and display your self-confidence in a way that wasn’t called on before. In a volatile situation, you will need to have your wits about you as you will have a particularly high profile. The trick is to handle it with grace and not let it go to your head, as this too shall pass and you’ll want to look back on a performance that maximized the opportunities dropped into your lap.
New Moon in 2nd House For a day or so you may be under pressure to underwrite new projects or finance situations that require sinking money into them. It may seem quite urgent, but it’s a time when everything seems a bit more intense, so you may do well to stand back and take a second look before jumping in with both feet. Wise investments made at this time can bring good returns in the next couple of weeks, but ill-conceived spending could drain you in the same time period. Know you’re right, then go ahead one way or the other, as the one option you probably won’t have is sitting on the fence or putting it all off until later. Strike when the iron is hot or pass the opportunity on to another.
New Moon in 3rd House A flurry of activity for several days can have the phone ringing off the hook as new ideas and propositions that require either your opinion or your decision come your way. Your challenge will be sorting the wheat from the chaff on the fly, and sorting out the confusion that always abounds at New Moon, especially this one. The day is won by multiple, smaller choices made wisely, rather than hanging on a single issue, so don’t obsess but decide quickly and move right along to the next. This is a great time for currying new acquaintances as the air of intensity makes for strong personal connections and breaks through the barriers of unfamiliarity.
New Moon in 4th House This may mark a day or so of raised tensions at home as biological tides run high and elbow room seems harder to come by. However, used creatively, this can lead to new ways of organizing and arranging your personal space so it doesn’t overlap that of others. It’s a good time to start new home-related projects as a way to utilize the extra energy in a constructive manner. Letting out your deeper expressions of feeling to another can make things especially intimate right now, but make sure you express yourself clearly and are not misunderstood. The perfect time to feel “at home” with someone, either literally or figuratively. The only thing you’ll not want to be is idle—the vibes are too intense to just sit on your hands.
New Moon in 5th House Find a party to go to, give one, or just party down where you stand—the astral weather is perfect for it. In fact, anything you do for enjoyment will seem twice as good right now. Play with your children, or just break out the inner child, as you can more easily part with self-consciousness and spontaneity breaks out, well, spontaneously! If you call on the muse for a creative project, she will definitely show up (muses love parties, and children), and you’ll find that your juices flow faster and easier than usual. There can be a fine line between joyous adventure and risky behavior, however, so try to stay on the safe side of the line. A good time to engage, but not be, a designated driver both literally and figuratively, so that you can be safely irresponsible for a while.
New Moon in 6th House A good time to take your blood pressure—if it’s not elevated now, you’re in really good shape. It can be easy to get worried about health matters now, but moderation is the right response. The temptation to throw yourself into a new regimen may run high, but choose your new path well before you embark or it will be a flash in the pan. The same goes for cleaning house in the workplace and starting off on a fresh footing. Make sure you’re not demanding too much of yourself in the long run—you will not always have this much drive, and you don’t want to peter out because you can’t keep up with yourself. A good program is determined by whether you can keep it going on an off day.
New Moon in 7th House: This is a particularly ripe couple of days for finding a new partner or turning over a new leaf with an old partner. You may find a flood of emotional intensity coming your way and how you utilize it could largely shape the direction of the relationship. That means be particularly understanding and realize that though feelings may be overstated at this time and emotions run hot, the message underneath is sincere and needs to be taken seriously. Breakthroughs can occur now that you both might have kept a lid on otherwise, and you’ll be glad you achieved the new closeness, even though you may not be able to keep it going at that level of intensity all month.
New Moon in 8th House You may find turning over a new leaf this month entails tossing out the old and ringing in the new, but you should take a second look before doing that. What you may find much more satisfactory is to simply rework and refurbish what is already there. Sometimes a new paint job makes everything new again, so you don’t have to start over from scratch. They don’t make things like they used to, so preserve what you can. It’s also a good time to initiate that new credit card, but avoid impulse buying, as it’s easy to go overboard right about now. Ditto for mortgage or other loans — a good starting time, but just take what you need and no more.
New Moon in 9th House It’s a great time for planning, cooking up new schemes, or rearranging the way you look at things. Patterns you establish now do not need detailed follow-up until later, so you can stick to generalities until you’ve got it all properly roughed-out. Put on the finishing touches later. New publishing efforts, or any project that generally disseminates what you have to say, are well begun now, and you may find the pressure is on to produce. Avoid hasty commitments, however, as you don’t want to be held to something ill-considered or not fully thought out. Well begun is half done, so be thoughtful, deliberate, and measured in your efforts, even though tempted or even encouraged not to be.
New Moon in 10th House New developments in career matters may have you quite wound up for a couple of days and the pressure to produce can be intense. Too many things happening at once make it hard to keep track of things, but you can’t afford to leave anything out. It is as important to listen at this time as to act. What people are saying to you and about you very much reflects your personal and professional status and you will want to make sure that you are being represented honestly. If you give your résumé a second look, you’ll find there are new things to say about yourself that need to be included. Taking a fresh stance can put you into new places, move you up a notch.
New Moon in 11th House Feelings run high among close friends and an intensity is available right now that can renew the love and passion that first fueled your relationships. It can be worth risking upset to get at what you are really feeling and share it with those that matter the most. Because there’s a crazy atmosphere surrounding it all, you can say things you might have hesitated to bring up and wear your heart on your sleeve without worrying about the outcome. The same ability to burst out of your shell will also aid in getting yourself into new company you might have thought didn’t care about you before. An approach of disarming honesty can make you welcome in unexpected places and bring you valuable allies.
New Moon in the 12th House Eruptions of the unconscious could bring both troubles and personal revelations to the surface right now, so you may want to be careful not to betray secrets or let the cat out of the bag prematurely. Don’t say the first thing that comes to mind, or you may give away more than you intend to. New deals are being struck behind the scenes with a strong sense of urgency, but they are not necessarily justified, so watch that you don’t climb aboard the wrong bandwagon right now. Wait until things come out into the open to make decisions, take sides, even though there appears to be advantage in secrecy. Open covenants, openly arrived at, are the better part of honor.
General: The Meaning of the Full Moon in the Houses
The following interpretations come from the Day Watch report. See our interpretations of the Full Moon in the houses here.
Full Moon in 1st House For a day or so you may find things get fairly wacky in your surroundings, and one of the causes may be you. The time is right (and the pressure is on) to bring critical projects to a conclusion, put on finishing touches, and show the world just what you’re all about. The emphasis is not so much on what you’ve done, but rather who you are, and it’s the right time to let your personality out of the box and shine, shine, shine. The whole set of circumstances may have you a little giddy, but that’s part of the surrounding picture at Full Moon, and this is your time to take a ride on that energy and put your personal mark on what comes of it.
Full Moon in 2nd House Under a little more intensity than usual, it’s time to wrap things up financially, collect on projects that have come to fruition, and generally tie up loose ends. That should mean ending extra spending for a time, as it will be less necessary, but that’s hard to do on a Full Moon, when things are a little crazy and judgment isn’t always on the mark. Still, put your focus on that last payment, that final accessory, as the appropriate approach is to round out what you have done, put on the final touches, and then showcase it. It’s a time to show off what you’ve got and make the most of it, not keep piling it on. You should concentrate on reaping its rewards.
Full Moon in 3rd House Don’t everybody talk at once! That’s what you’re likely to be saying as the volume level around you peaks and everybody is trying to get a message through, including yourself. Full Moon is like that in general, but this time it can be especially wordy as you try to finish up a lot of correspondence and tie up loose ends as the links you have established begin to really amount to something. That means crowding a lot of important last-minute things into the space of a few days, so don’t over schedule yourself in advance. Leave plenty of room open for last-minute situations that come rushing in and demand equal attention. Concentrate on matters that require conclusion and closure right now; save your new ideas for later when they can get proper attention.
Full Moon in 4th House You may find you could use a little more space at home as everyone there, including yourself, is taking up a lot more psychic space than usual right now. That can be claustrophobic and you can get on each other’s nerves—or you can use it as the opportunity to connect more by opening that personal space and letting people in. Or, you can just get out of the house and take a break from it all. Whatever you choose, you will find yourself with matters coming to a head and you’ll be making conclusions about just how well your internal game plan is working out. Literally and figuratively, good fences make good neighbors, but only when located strategically. Time to finish yours, and test it.
Full Moon in 5th House Spontaneity is the watchword right now, and it’s time to kick back and have some fun, especially with close friends and children. If you’re at a party and go just a little bit over the top, you will likely be in good company, as this is a general time of celebration for all. Passion and intensity, on any topic you choose, can run rampant and enthusiasm overflows. If you’re trying to get business done, you’ll be swimming against the tide, so if you have the option, just go with the flow. If you’re working on a creative project, make sure you get the product preserved for posterity—on paper, on film, on tape, on CD. If you’re just going to be pleasantly out to lunch, don’t bother, just enjoy.
Full Moon in 6th House If you aren’t finally achieving something from your diet or exercise regimen, ask yourself why not. This is the time you should be really getting things together and it should be starting to pay off. However, avoid excess and going over the top right now, as you may feel you can do more — and maybe eat more—than you really should. At work, you may feel a little overbooked as tasks multiply and time is short to complete them. Once you’ve put on the finishing touches, you’ll be able to stand back and take pride in your accomplishments. A good time for an office party, if you can concoct a good excuse for one. In general right now, celebrate finished tasks.
Full Moon in 7th House This is a wonderful time to let your partner shine and just lay back and appreciate it all. That can mean enjoying the fruits of your mutual labors wrought by the relationship, or it can mean finally fully connecting with someone you’ve been developing something special with for a while. In either case, the rewards of connecting closely will take center stage, and you can lean on the familiarity you already have to support what comes next. This can apply equally well in business as in romance, as long as you’re dealing with an equal on equal ground. The essence is that you bring things to full bloom right now, so you can begin harvesting what you have sown.
Full Moon in 8th House If you’ve been chasing down that extra credit line, looking for a better deal on a mortgage or equity loan, this is a likely time to pull it all together, as long as you’ve got all your ducks in a row. That may mean scrambling for some last minute details or information to make it under a deadline, but there’s real potential here. It’s also good psychic weather for putting the finishing touches on restoration projects, picking up that antique you’ve been chasing down, and clearing out the cobwebs that may have been settling on lesser-used items. You’ll have the courage to toss out those useless things you’ve been hoarding, and the burst of freedom will do you good. The theme: finish clearing the decks for action.
Full Moon in 9th House Think big, stretch the imagination, push the envelope of your beliefs and feelings—this Full Moon has the potential to be an eye-opener. The energy is in the air to expand your window on the world, especially where it has been an ongoing operation already in the works. The heady feeling of suddenly having put it all together can have you wondering now what to do with it all, but that will take care of itself down the line. Look for good news on the legal front, as things wrap themselves up and come to a conclusion, but don’t count your chickens yet, as it’s easy to overestimate right now. Main issues can get resolved now, as all parties are willing to go an extra mile to agree in principle, if not on the details.
Full Moon in 10th House This may be the perfect time to button down career matters that have been under development for a while. Although the pace may be accelerated and last-minute additions come crowding in, you can have a fuller, rosier picture of just where you stand in your profession and what people think of you. Choose this spot for releasing a shotgun blast of self-promotion, whatever it is you do, as public relations has extra carrying power from this Full Moon. The buzz about you comes in a rising crescendo that peaks now, so start figuring out ways to take it to the bank. Although you may be tempted to squirrel yourself away at home, take time out during these few days to wave your own flag.
Full Moon in 11th House Relaxation, comfort with your surroundings, and the warmth and glow of friendship can be the watchwords of this Full Moon, if you’re willing to disconnect from the daily grind and tap into your personal happy side for a while. Fine food, pleasant company, tales of shared lives and mutual adventures bring a fullness that makes you realize that the good life is about feelings, not money; friendship, not possessions. Satisfaction comes from just letting things happen for a moment and inviting in the blessings that surround you, despite the rigors of existence. If you want a peak experience, it’s in the wings right now, roll it out. Take the time to put the seal on relationships that elevate and support you.
Full Moon in 12th House Although this Full Moon may at times seem to place you between dream and hallucination, it emphasizes the ability to perceive and commune with your inner self in ways you might have been cut off from it. The intensity in the air breaks internal barriers and allows you to heal wounds, now that they have come to light. In more mundane affairs, things being cooked up behind the scenes come to fruition, although you may have to take extra precautions that they don’t come into the light, unless you are fully ready to go public with them. Avoid confrontations right now, which will put you at a disadvantage, use more subtle means to gain your ends when emotions run high.
