The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Friday, November 22nd, 2024, at 8:28 PM EST. 

On Friday, the Last Quarter (or Third Quarter) Moon occurs when the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Virgo.

The Last Quarter Moon phase points a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.

This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might consider recent revelations, what they mean to us, and our next steps. As we advance, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary. We’re sorting out what does and doesn’t work for us.

The Last Quarter Moon Chart:

This phase of the Moon occurs at 1 degree and 15 minutes of Virgo square the Sun at the same degree of Sagittarius, affecting planets at approximately 29 to 30 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) and 0 to 3 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) the most.

This week: The Sun is in Scorpio until the 21st, when it enters Sagittarius; Mercury is in Sagittarius; Venus is in Capricorn; Mars is in Leo.

The Sun is in Scorpio from October 22-November 21. The guiding principle of Scorpio is “I desire.” Scorpio is the sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio–we want to get to the bottom of matters. Mediocrity does not satisfy either. All that is hidden, taboo, secret, or suppressed interests us. In Libra, we strived towards equality and fairness. Scorpio, however, instinctively believes that life simply isn’t fair.

Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way, as well as passionate, strong-willed, and intense. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Jealousy, vindictiveness, beating a dead horse, and manipulative are some of the more negative expressions of Scorpio.

We are more likely to prosper through strategy and knowing the value of keeping some things to ourselves at the right times. Efforts to repurpose, recycle, salvage, and transform can be successful. We’re especially successful at organizing, researching, investigating, and analyzing.

While we can be quite controlled with effort, there is some inclination to extremism. We can be drawn to challenges and crises, and we feel compelled to heal, fix, and direct or manage.

The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 21-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves.

While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking.

We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.

Mercury is in Sagittarius from November 2, 2024-January 8, 2025 [Lengthier than usual due to a Mercury retrograde cycle that occurs entirely in the sign of Sagittarius from November 25th to December 15th]. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. We seek ideals, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.

We’re more inclined to ask questions and seek answers during this forward-looking cycle. We might often wax philosophical, and we enjoy wrapping our minds around new concepts and ideas. Still, the details are not as interesting to us now, as we prefer to envision the big picture.

On the downside, we can be inconsistent and lack attention to details. While frank and open, we can also be tactless during this period. We’re generous with our communications and input, and we’re humorous and friendly at this time.

Venus is in Capricorn from November 11- December 7. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions increases.

We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships. We’re steadfast and seek genuine, perhaps old-fashioned connections. It’s not a time for PDA, and we can be somewhat guarded and reserved with expressing our feelings or revealing our relationships.

The underdog who works hard can have their time in the sun now. We value slow and steady effort and long-term prospects. Reliability in others is most attractive.

This cycle favors getting along well with higher-ups, conservative business goals and ventures, long-term investments, and matters related to pension.

Mars is in Leo from November 3, 2024, to January 6, 2025, and then April 18-June 17, 2025. [Why so long and in two steps? Mars transits Leo, but then turns retrograde on December 6th, 2024. While retrograde, Mars returns to Cancer (on January 6th, 2025). Mars turns direct on February 23rd and then enters Leo again on April 18th.] In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have grand goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.

Mars in Leo can awaken a competitive spirit or drive. We’re more willing to take risks to get what we want. We also tend to make a splash, and we want to be in the driver’s seat. This transit is passionate, ardent, and dramatic. We seek to appear strong and prefer to be in the lead or the center of attention. We can be particularly angry if we feel disrespected or in an undignified position.

Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces. Saturn will enter Aries on May 24th, 2025.

Uranus is in Taurus.

Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.

There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.

Pluto fully transitions from Capricorn to Aquarius this week. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Pluto retrograded back into Capricorn, and was in Capricorn until January 20th, 2024. Pluto was in Aquarius from January 20th to September 1st, when it retreated into Capricorn once again. Note: Pluto is slow-moving through the zodiac signs!

Note that Pluto finally completes its journey through Capricorn this week on November 19th, 2024, from which time Pluto stays in Aquarius for many years to come.

Romance & Relationships

Venus is in Capricorn from November 11-December 7. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships are paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others’ expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence.

There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced. However, this cycle offers us the opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us to feel more grounded and secure in the long run.

This week: On Sunday and Monday, we are more communicative and diplomatic. We’re inclined to talk about our feelings, connections, affections, and relationships.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we’re somewhat detached from our affections and attachments. Of course, this can help us gain some perspective or free us up to try new things, but we can also end up making decisions that don’t fully represent us.

However, Thursday and Friday, we’re in great shape for showing our love through our actions, commitment, and reliability or loyalty.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love ’em: that’s what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so – but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.

Venus square North Node November 15-16. Social niceties go by the wayside, and we may be working at cross-purposes with our relationships or relationship goals. There can be a lack of agreement, dissatisfaction stirred up, and a sense that our relationships are preventing our growth.

Venus parallel Mercury November 17-18. A friendly time when we appreciate diplomacy and we communicate, connect, and socialize more readily.

Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus November 19-20. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness. A desire to experiment in the romance department may be fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying or frustrating.

Venus sextile Saturn November 21-22. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.

Venus quincunx Jupiter November 26. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.

Venus parallel retrograde Mercury November 26. It’s a time when we review our affections, relationships, and past connections.

Venus square Chiron November 27. Not a commitment-friendly transit. We are somewhat fearful of investing ourselves emotionally in a relationship.

Venus semi-sextile Mercury November 29. It may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.

Venus trine Uranus December 1-2. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.

Venus parallel Pluto December 3. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.

Venus sextile Neptune December 3-4. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.

Venus semi-square Saturn December 5. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives

It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).

The Moon is waning this week, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, although with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).

Mars semi-square Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly.

Mercury opposition Jupiter. In an attempt to attach greater meaning to our thoughts and ideas, we may exaggerate, overstate, or overestimate. We strive to find both meaning and purpose to our lives. However, it is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can focus.

Mercury sesquiquadrate Mars. Impulsive communications and hasty decision-making. We can accomplish more if we are careful not to be too hasty and forget details. “Haste makes waste”.

Sun trine Neptune. We’re at the right place at the right time, probably because our hunches are more likely to be correct and we are “tuned in”. We are inspired, and charitable acts now will serve to lift our spirits like no drug can. A good time for self-improvement programs or efforts. Instinctual judgment is enhanced under this influence. We are able to see matters, and people, from a different perspective–one that allows for, and even finds beauty in, differences.

Mercury trine Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it’s not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.

Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus. Unusual attractions (to people and things) can have us acting on a whim. We may deal with freedom versus closeness issues in our relationships. Relationships or finances can be unpredictable. Changes now can create fresh opportunities, however, that can add to our sense of joy and freedom.

Sun sextile Pluto. Research brings rewards. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being. Opportunities to find or renew something we had lost, and to gain some power are available now.

Venus sextile Saturn. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. Small advances can be made in business and in partnerships. Support from older people or authority figures may come by way of solid advice or tangible help. Renewed ties to old friends are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing friendships.

NOVEMBER 17

Mars and Jupiter form a semi-square today, generating much enthusiasm and paving the way for potential success and achievement. However, this can also lead to misjudging, mainly about the time and energy necessary to fulfill a goal or venture. There can be some jumping ahead, impulsiveness, haughtiness, and competitiveness.

Mercury heads into opposition with Jupiter today–another influence stirring our desire to grow and think in big terms. As the day advances, we can be excited and enthusiastic about our ideas and anxious to share them. We need room to explore and create, visualize new solutions to problems, and express ourselves freely. However, we are inclined to exaggerate, and it’s best to watch for a strong tendency to overstate or overestimate in our quest for meaning. We might swing from blind faith to skepticism, making it difficult to make good, practical choices. We’re stretching our minds now, and while this is an excellent mental exercise, we should avoid making commitments until we’re more realistic. We should also watch for scattering our energies or taking on too many activities at once–we could be looking so far ahead that we forget the essential details or disclaimers. Positively, we might entertain possibilities that we wouldn’t normally consider.

NOVEMBER 18

Mercury opposes Jupiter early today, and it forms a sesquiquadrate with Mars midday. We should watch for rushing things, impatience in speech and movements, and abrupt or insensitive commentary in the first half of the day. However, mental tension can stir us into action, which can be constructive if channeled well. We can accomplish more if we’re careful to pace ourselves. It’s best to put in the effort to respect and validate others when expressing what we need and want. We should do our research before investing time and energy into something, but allow ourselves to expand our minds.

As the day advances, a Sun-Neptune trine encourages us to let go and let things flow. This transit brings a fluid, graceful energy to the second half of the day. We readily access our intuition, and we can be moved to help, support, or give of ourselves. This influence inspires us to give life to our dreams. We would do well to de-emphasize some of our material concerns or interests, at least temporarily. We see people and life itself from a different perspective — one that not only allows for but finds beauty in differences.

The Moon continues its void period until the Moon enters Cancer today at 3:50 AM EST.

NOVEMBER 19

The Moon spends the day in the sign of Cancer, drawing our strong attention to our personal lives, attachments, home, family, and familiar places and faces. Mercury forms a trine to Chiron this morning, opening our minds to learning from one another. This influence aids with communicating our feelings constructively. We’re relaying our messages in relatable, accessible ways. Good energy is with us for discussing or giving more thought to sensitive topics. We’re especially alert, observant, and willing to understand. It’s easier than usual to communicate our message now, although this is less about getting the exact wording right and more about conveying our intentions. We might discover new ways to approach problems.

Pluto enters Aquarius today, this time for the long haul. It entered Aquarius twice before but retrograded back into Capricorn. However, Pluto is now solidly in Aquarius, and it won’t be until 2043 when it will transition out of the sign.

While Pluto is in Aquarius, we take social structures and politics especially seriously and seek major reform in these areas. Unusual, intense, or dramatic happenings are possible with friends and networks. During this long-term cycle, we will likely confront issues of control and power related to individuality, equality, friendships, and group associations. We can be on a quest to distinguish ourselves for our progressiveness, scientific minds, ideals, humanitarianism, or unique qualities. It’s also a time when we seek to change and overhaul society through science, inventions, and the mind/ideas.

NOVEMBER 20

With a Venus-Uranus sesquiquadrate very early today, we can feel discontent with our current pleasures or pastimes. It’s best to tame restlessness or avoid abrupt moves but consider our needs for change and growth. The Moon continues its transit of Cancer until 8:51 AM EST, fueling our desire for comfort, familiarity, and emotional wellness. The Moon then enters Leo–a decidedly more outgoing and assertive influence. We’re ready to share our ideas, creations, and joy with others. We seek channels for expressing personal emotional drama or creative potential. The Moon’s opposition to Pluto can be confrontational and challenging, but it may also get us in touch with our needs, perhaps in a convoluted way. There can be some intensity in our personal relationships, or we’re dealing with inner turmoil. The Moon aligns with Mars this afternoon, awakening emotional desires.

The Sun enters Sagittarius today and quickly moves into a sextile aspect with Pluto. The Sun will transit Sagittarius until December 21st. Our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person, project, or ourselves to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves. While the Sun moves through the fiery, mutable sign of Sagittarius in the weeks ahead, we might take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking. We gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision during this cycle.

The Sun-Pluto sextile puts us in a renovating spirit–we seek more depth from our activities and connections. This transit subtly increases our determination, ambition, and dedication. Making improvements or working toward a personal goal can be successful now. We tend to direct our energy constructively and seek new insight into our lives. It’s a time to discover new ways of looking at problems or life. We feel more vital and enjoy the empowered feeling that results from making changes and improvements. Venus forms a sextile to Saturn this morning, encouraging a considered, practical approach, particularly in our social lives. It’s a grounding influence that helps stabilize our affections. We place a higher value on security, steadiness, and loyalty. This transit boosts the appeal of the ordinary and reliable–we appreciate longstanding alliances or tried-and-true pleasures. We are more responsible with others and with our own feelings and affections. Our judgment is sound, and we’re a little more conservative with money under this influence. We can enjoy planning and organizing.

With the Moon in Virgo all day, we’re in great shape to organize, help others, and manage our everyday affairs. The Virgo Moon, especially its opposition to Saturn this evening, reminds us of the practical details of our lives. Ideally, we slow down just enough to pace ourselves. The Moon’s trine to Venus in Capricorn tonight encourages taking practical steps towards resolving problems and enjoying the process.
