A FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, May 25, 2015, at 1:19 PM EDT.

On Monday afternoon, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Gemini forms a square with the Virgo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 4 degrees and 11 minutes of Virgo squaring the Sun at 4 degrees and 11 minutes of Gemini, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 2 to 6 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)

The Sun is in Gemini; Mercury is in Gemini; Venus is in Cancer; Mars is in Gemini.

The Sun is in Gemini from May 21-June 21. Knowledge and diversity motivate us with the Sun in Gemini. We are more sociable, intellectual, and insatiably curious under this influence. We tend to scatter our energies as a result of this curiosity and awareness of all of our options. We are more communicative and versatile, but we can also be unreliable.

Mercury is in Gemini from April 30-July 8 (longer than usual due to Mercury's retrograde in Gemini from May 18-June 11). When Mercury is in Gemini, we are especially communicative, curious, and sociable. Mercury feels right at home in Gemini, one of the signs that it rules. We tend to take more pleasure in gaining a superficial knowledge of many subjects rather than dig deep into any one topic. We are especially astute when it comes to arguing or making a point. We are attracted to wordplays, puns, and negotiations. We are easily distracted.

Venus is in Cancer May 7-June 5. In Cancer, Venus is nurturing, protective and self-protective, cautious, and fertile. We experience many emotional ups and downs in love under this influence due to increased sensitivity and impressionability. We are tender, romantic, and attached. Cancer love is dedicated, warm, and devoted. We show our love through our devotion, care, and concern. We are affectionate and cuddly, and are at our best when we feel safe and secure.

Mars in Gemini May 16-June 24. In Gemini, Mars is considerably more versatile and flexible--and considerably less determined and focused! Our interests become more diversified, possibly to the point of going off on so many tangents that we are scattered and ineffective.

Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015 to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn's transit through Sagittarius here.

Jupiter entered Leo on July 16th, where it will transit until August 11th, 2015. Read about Jupiter's transit through Leo here. Jupiter will transit Virgo from August 11, 2015 to September 9, 2016.

Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.

Mercury is Retrograde in the sign of Gemini from May 18th to June 11th, 2015.

Times are Eastern

Mercury is retrograde from May 18-June 11, 2015. Mercury's shadow period begins May 4th and ends June 27th. Note that the shadow period begins before Mercury turns retrograde, when Mercury first passes over the degree that Mercury later returns to in retrograde motion. The shadow period ends when Mercury again passes over the degree at which it first turned retrograde. The shadow period is different than Mercury's storm period in astrology, which refers to the period when Mercury is moving especially slowly.

As the planet of communication, Mercury retrograde tends to breed a certain level of confusion. Mercury rules our "lower" mind--how we perceive and interpret information that we receive from our environment, and how we relay that information to others. Mercury has rulership over such things as speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail and shipping, and so forth. All of these areas of life are affected when Mercury is functioning in a sluggish state. Decision-making is challenged during Mercury retrograde. Needless to say, it is not advised to sign contracts, engage in important decision-making, or launch a new business. Delays and challenges are more probable with Mercury retrograde. It's a time when being careless with money, our personal information, or paperwork can be costly.

There is absolutely a positive side to Mercury Retrograde. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting. We look at the world a little differently--through different filters--and can come up with some very important inner revelations. It may be difficult to communicate them under this influence, but not everything needs to be rationalized. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, benefiting from keeping a journal, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication can actually re-connect us to other means of communication, such as when there is an unexpected power outage and we're forced off the computer and television, finding different and often satisfying ways to entertain ourselves.

It is important to note that there is absolutely no reason to suspend projects or anything of the sort during the Mercury Retrograde cycle. It's not an ideal time to start new ones or to sign contracts, simply because a change of mind is very possible once Mercury turns direct. However, it's a fabulous time to do some "outside of the box" thinking. Acting on our ideas, however, might be best left for a Mercury Direct period.

Pay close attention to what you say and communicate in general, particularly around the days of Mercury's stations (May 18th and June 11th), as well as around retrograde Mercury's conjunction to the Sun on May 30th (midway between the start and end of the retro period). If you are itching to make a point with someone, especially, or if you are planning on "signing on the dotted line", try to hold off. It is likely that you will have a change of mind once the station passes, and you can do some damage in the meantime. When a planet stations, its energies are very strong in our lives. When Mercury stations, communications have more impact, so that negative ones could have long-term implications at this time. However, if you are very clear within yourself and about what you are communicating, this can be a positive thing. Read more about Mercury retrograde.

Mercury Retrograde

With Mercury retrograde in Gemini: We might look at past decisions and ideas from a new, possibly enlightened perspective. Retrograde Mercury aligns with the Sun on the 30th in the sign of Gemini, bringing illumination to our thoughts. It's a favorable time for processing recent events and ideas, and for beginning to look at problems or issues from a new perspective and with a new understanding. Significant new ideas can be birthed at this time.

Romance & Relationships

Venus is in Cancer from May 7-June 5. We treat lovers with sympathy and tenderness, providing the emotional nurturing that they need. We tend to "play it safe" when it comes to relationships. Love and devotion is most important to us, and provides us with a sense of inner security. We seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are quite devoted to our partners, and we seek such devotion in return. However, we could also become possessive, manipulative, and stifling. Familiarity is more important to us now. Our fear of rejection is overdeveloped, and we offer our hearts cautiously as a result. We pay more attention to our lovers' feelings than their words. We feel threatened if a lover acts in an impersonal, overly independent, or detached manner. Safe and solid relationships are more appealing. Romantic and emotional hurts are very hard to forget.

This week: Some more ups and downs are likely in relationships again this week, although healing opportunities are with us as well. Monday brings out the need to make changes and stimulates a need for newness, but desires can be fleeting. We can be a little rebellious, and our judgment is also clouded by a Mars-Neptune square. Wednesday's Venus-Chiron trine brings beautiful energy for connecting, reconnecting, and repairing problem areas. This is a time for expressing feelings.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Cancer May 7-June 5. Mothering (or being mothered), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time - these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn May 22-23. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus square Uranus May 25. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last--but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus trine Chiron May 27. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings.
Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune May 30-31. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus parallel Mars June 1-3. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here, and is indicative of the "outcome" of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period, or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.

The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:

Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, May 24th, from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Monday, May 25th, at 4:52 AM EDT.

VOC Moon on Tuesday, May 26th, from 10:22 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Wednesday, May 27th, at 5:43 PM EDT.

VOC Moon on Friday, May 29th, from 4:21 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Scorpio the next day, Saturday, May 30th, at 5:34 AM EDT.

This Week's Calendar

This Week's Aspects

semi-squareUranus Sun semi-square Uranus. During this transit, we feel the need for action, but if we don't know where we're headed, we might take the wrong turn. Unexpected changes in plans or events can test our patience, and we might feel a bit out of control. However, they could stimulate us to try new approaches and they certainly act to cut boredom. This transit could offer us the drive to do something new, but avoid making hasty major decisions for the time being.

VenussquareUranus Venus square Uranus. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness is probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. Hold off on decision-making with regards to finances.

MarssquareNeptune Mars square Neptune. Inspiration comes from unusual sources, but you have a hard time staying focused and organized. Energy may be variable. Intuition is strong, but may be faulty. Not a good time to begin a new project or affair.

MercuryconjunctMars Mercury conjunct Mars. This is a good energy for debate or energetic mental work. We may be called upon to make a decision, but it may be a hasty, ill-considered one. We may be argumentative and irritable under this influence, and particularly impatient with vagueness. Be careful to avoid cutting words and aggressive driving. Our minds may be especially clear and active, and this can be a good time to eliminate wasteful activities. This influence excites and over-stimulates the whole nervous system.

Venussemi-squareSun Venus semi-square Sun. Irritations that seem to stem from others could be the reflection of our own inner uneasiness. Do your best to control yearnings for more and search for a creative solution for your inner dissatisfaction.

Venustrine Venus trine Chiron. We have the chance to heal our personal relationships now, as we are more open to intimacy and commitment, as well as learning from one another. We more easily see beauty in human weaknesses, and are less inclined to see fault, or to concern ourselves with fault. It's a strong time for building trust in relationships, and for seeing potential in one another.

MercurysquareNeptune Mercury square Neptune. We find it hard to follow facts, directions, and instructions. Difficulties concentrating on hard, cold facts are likely; and we may question facts altogether or avoid being pinned down for answers. This is a bad time for signing on the dotted line. Perceptions are confused, unrealistic, or too idealistic to carry weight in the real world. Conversations may be vague.

Mercury Mercury semi-square Venus. Difficulties in social or romantic communication are possible today. On the other hand, we may make more efforts to be polite and to communicate. Hypersensitivity, and lack of mental discipline. Our minds wander.

MercuryconjunctSun Mercury conjunct Sun. We are especially sharp, communicative, and open at this time, as our wants are aligned with our thoughts. It's a favorable time for solving problems. What we say or write now has impact, for better or for worse!

What's In Store By the Stars - Daily Astrology Trends

(as featured on our site's main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)

MAY 24
The Moon is in creative Leo today, stimulating our desire to share and create, and aligning with Jupiter minutes into the day, boosting our confidence in ourselves and in life itself. We tend to be more romantic and generous with our feelings, and we take pride in our accomplishments or creations. Today is strong for camaraderie, cooperative action, domestic activities, and strengthening relationships with people we love. We can feel especially confident in our ability to take on challenges and solve problems.

A void of course Moon occurs from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Monday, May 25th, at 4:52 AM EDT.

MAY 25
The energies of the day are complicated. The Sun semi-squares Uranus and Venus squares Uranus, so that we are especially sensitive to situations that feel too confining or limiting. There can be interruptions in schedules and unreliability, but these can prompt us to take interesting detours from our usual routines. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods might lead us astray, however. And desires can be unusual or misleading, particularly with Mars square Neptune also in play. We may have a hard time staying focused and organized, and both energy and motivation levels can be variable. We may be seeing what we want to see rather than what is, or could be entertaining far-out possibilities now. This is not an ideal time for new beginnings or major decisions. The day's energies encourage us to let go of rigidity.

The Moon ends its void period at 4:52 AM, when it enters Virgo.

MAY 26
We can be very interested in producing, analyzing, fixing problems, and sorting things out today with a Virgo Moon all day and Mercury and Mars approaching a conjunction. Taking care of business is a major theme now. We crave organization and practicality, and we want to get things accomplished. Keeping busy and making headway satisfies us more than usual, and it will be especially important to channel excess mental energy constructively, or we may feel nervous, impatient, and irritable without a good channel for expressing this energy.

A void of course Moon occurs from 10:22 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Wednesday, May 27th, at 5:43 PM EDT.

MAY 27
Mercury's alignment with Mars this morning is a good influence for motivated, energetic work, particularly related to communications and the mind. We may want to get right to the point, so that communications may be on the insensitive side, but also direct and clear. With Mercury retrograde, we might renew an interest in handling an old problem or reviving an old project. The Sun semi-square Venus can stimulate feelings of discontent or a sense that we're missing something, and can really wind us down after the intense energy of the morning. However, a trine between Venus and Chiron this afternoon provides us with nice opportunities to open ourselves up to learning and growing through our relationships. We are inclined to see less fault in others, we're open to new ways of interacting, and we might be seeing more potential in one another.

The Moon ends its void period at 5:43 PM EDT, when it enters Libra.

MAY 28
The Moon is in Libra all day. There are nice exchanges between the Moon and the Sun, Mercury, and Mars, all in Gemini. This can be a strong idea day. We are flexible, optimistic, and flirtatious. Our minds are working overtime, and we can be quite focused on finding answers and enjoying ourselves in the process. Retrograde Mercury is returning towards a square to Neptune, which first happened while Mercury was direct on the 8-9. There can be some tendency to overlook or misinterpret facts and instructions under this influence.

MAY 29

A void of course Moon occurs from 4:21 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Scorpio the next day, Saturday, May 30th, at 5:34 AM EDT.

MAY 30

The Moon ends its void period at 5:34 AM EDT, when it enters Scorpio.

Moon Signs This Week:

When the Moon is in Leo

MoonLeoThe Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.

The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.

When the Moon is in Virgo

MoonVirgoWe instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.

The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.

When the Moon is in Libra

MoonLibraCreating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.

The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.

When the Moon is in Scorpio

MoonScorpioIntensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.

The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.

When the Moon is in...Transits of the Moon through the Signs.

This Week's Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends):

Sun in Gemini The cycle which begins for you now will be marked by a more intense focus on mental and communicative activity than you may ever have experienced before. It's a time of more involvement with other people, a time for gathering information, and a time when you're apt to be more on the go than ever. There is likely to be an emphasis on reading, writing, studying, and all forms of exchanging information with others in the years ahead - and it will all serve as a path for self-discovery and personal development.

Mercury in Gemini A walking encyclopedia, a yen to know a little bit about everything (and everyone): these are the icons of the cycle you have just begun. Talking, writing, keeping a finger on the pulse of all that's happening ... this is a time of study and learning, a cycle of mental challenge, curiosity, and social/intellectual growth. Such things are an end in themselves rather than a means to any other end.

Venus in Cancer Mothering (or being mothered), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time - these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.

Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You're a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative ... perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.

Jupiter in Leo High drama, big romance, a creative bonanza: this is the stuff dreams are made of now. The world is your stage, the spotlight is your goal, and the love and appreciation of others is the air you breathe. Children, lovers, admirers: these are the people who figure large in your life as this cycle progresses. A willingness to gamble on the future.

Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.

Uranus in Aries
A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.

Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver's seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?

Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable - and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you'd think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place...
