The NEW MOON occurs on Thursday, September 17th, 2020, at 7:00 AM EDT.
On Thursday morning, the New Moon occurs as the Moon aligns with the Sun in the sign of Virgo.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 25 degrees and 1 minute of Virgo. This New Moon harmonizes very tightly with Saturn and also with Pluto.
A time of new beginnings, this New Moon presents an excellent opportunity for us to formulate some goals regarding “all things Virgo.” We’d do well to concentrate on new ways to get our day-to-day life organized. We might think about the keywords for this particular and earthy sign — such things as analytical, intelligent, reserved, critical, helpful, conscientious — and consider ways to enhance, develop, or incorporate these traits into our personalities.
Please note that Virgo is found somewhere in every person’s chart, and these are the areas of our lives most affected now.
The New Moon in Virgo is an excellent time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Virgin. These include:
- building our powers of healthy, constructive discrimination;
- rolling up our sleeves and getting down to some serious work;
- beginning a new project that requires attention to details;
- making lists, actively ticking off completed activities, and taking pride in our “little” accomplishments;
- starting a health regime, researching nutrition and nourishment, and paying attention to our diet;
- setting up specific routines that will help us manage our lives in constructive and mindful ways;
- and handling the finer details of our day-to-day life in an organized, step-by-step fashion so that we can free our minds of clutter.
We’re determined to improve our work, routines, or tasks. It’s a powerful time for practical solutions in our jobs, health, self-care programs, and habits.
The above chart is excellent for seeing the fundamental influences and chart patterns of this New Moon.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 25 degrees and 1 minute of Virgo, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 21 to 29 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Virgo; Mercury is in Libra; Venus is in Leo; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Virgo from August 22-September 22. Our focus shifts to the pieces of the puzzle–the little details of our lives. It is now time to take care of practical concerns. Tending to the details of everyday life may not sound like loads of fun, but it can certainly free us from unnecessary stress that results from “collecting” odds and ends of unfinished business. This is an ideal time to get organized, to do detail work, and to improve communications on the job.
Mercury is in Libra from September 5-27. When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we are able to bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways of improving our negotiation skills. In an attempt to see both sides of any given situation, Mercury in Libra can be a vacillating energy. It can be more challenging than usual to make quick decisions, as we can sit “on the fence”. We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions in order to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves in such a way as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a good period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Leo from September 6-October 2. Love is magnificent and grand. We take pride in love, and we are generous with our money as well. This is a warmhearted, teasing, expressive, proud, and extravagant placement for Venus. Love is a bit of a game–a game that is perpetual, as Venus in Leo is forever stuck in the romance stage of a relationship. We feed on attention, acknowledgement, validation, and adoration. Venus in Leo loves to be adored, pampered, and admired. Pride and passion are hallmarks of this cycle. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
Mars is in Aries from June 27, 2020, to January 6, 2021. [This is longer than usual due to the retrograde of Mars from September 9-November 13, 2020.] Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
Saturn has returned to the sign of Capricorn in retrograde motion (early July). In 2020, Saturn divides its time between the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July, 1, 2020, and then later, from December 17, 2020, to March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Leo from September 6-October 2. We take pride in love, and we are generous with our money as well. This is a warmhearted, teasing, expressive, proud, and extravagant placement for Venus. Love is a bit of a game–a game that is perpetual, as Venus in Leo can seem forever stuck in the romance stage of a relationship. We feed on attention, acknowledgment, validation, and adoration.
Venus in Leo loves to be adored, pampered, and admired. Pride and passion are hallmarks of this cycle. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
This week: On Sunday the 13th (continuing from Saturday the 12th), we’re more fully connecting with our feelings and romantic needs. We’re ready to open up and be more vulnerable. On Monday and Tuesday, however, we’re commitment-shy and skittish if we feel confined. We can be dodging commitments, preferring to keep our options open.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Venus sextile Mercury September 4. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune September 9-10. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus trine Chiron September 12-13. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings.
Venus square Uranus September 14-15. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus quincunx Jupiter September 21. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
Venus quincunx Neptune September 23. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming blinded by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.
Venus parallel Uranus September 24. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron September 25-26. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus quincunx Pluto September 25-26. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, September 13th, from 8:05 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Leo at 11:32 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, September 15th, from 11:09 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 2:37 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, September 17th, from 7:42 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Libra at 2:56 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, September 19th, from 10:29 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 2:33 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waxing this week after the New Moon on the 17th, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, but with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Monday, September 14th, at approximately 6:35 AM EDT, until Tuesday, September 15th, at approximately 11:05 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Leo. Caveat: Mars is retrograde.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus trine Chiron. We have the chance to heal our personal relationships now, as we are more open to intimacy and commitment, as well as learning from one another. We more easily see beauty in human weaknesses, and are less inclined to see fault, or to concern ourselves with fault. It’s a strong time for building trust in relationships, and for seeing potential in one another.
Sun trine Pluto. We are able to get to the bottom of things now. We are more decisive than usual, and our abilities to concentrate and focus help us achieve what we set out to do. Endurance, the power to achieve, an opportunity to draw upon our past and to capitalize on resources, and strategy are all themes of this influence. This is a very positive aspect for starting a money-making endeavor (all things equal) or a new project. Leadership skills are in focus and strong. We are more able to connect with others in terms of shared goals and interests. The focus now is on eliminating negative or superficial elements in our lives.
Venus square Uranus. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness is probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. Hold off on decision-making with regards to finances.
Mercury square Jupiter. Information overload is possible today. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. This is an unfavorable transit for travel. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate.
Sun sesquiquadrate Uranus. During this transit, we feel the need for action, but if we don’t know where we’re headed, we might take the wrong turn. Unexpected changes in plans or events can test our patience, and we might feel a bit out of control. However, they could stimulate us to try new approaches and they certainly act to cut boredom. This transit could offer us the drive to do something new, but avoid making hasty major decisions for the time being.
Sun trine Saturn. We feel grounded and stable. It’s easy to stick to a specific task and make headway. Productivity may be slow, but it’s steady. We have common sense at our disposal. We are willing to look reality in the eye and to take responsibility for our lives.
Mercury quincunx Neptune. There can be uncertainty and indecision now, as it can be difficult to draw upon intuition or to combine logic and intuition in a cohesive manner. Alternatively, the tendency to daydream can be high, and often at the expense of productivity and clear communication.
Sun quincunx Mars. A tendency to fly off the handle easily characterizes this transit, due to inner tension between the will and performance. It’s hard to find satisfaction or a sense of peace at this time. We may feel decidedly “out of sorts”.

SEPTEMBER 13
With Venus trine Chiron today, we may get the chance to heal our relationships with an openness to learning from one another. We more easily see the beauty of human weaknesses. It’s a good time to build trust in relationships and to recognize potential in one another. We understand the value of the people, relationships, pleasures, and things in our lives. We can benefit from interacting with others in fresh ways, with more authenticity and sincerity. The Moon continues its transit of Cancer until it enters Leo at 11:32 AM EDT. While the Moon’s square to retrograde Mars this morning can rile us up with resentment or stir up buried frustrations, as the day advances, it’s easy to move on. The Leo Moon encourages our affectionate, expressive natures.
The void Moon occurs from 8:05 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Leo at 11:32 AM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 14
The Sun in Virgo trines Pluto today, and delving deeply into a matter can be satisfying and rewarding. We’re exceptionally resourceful and efficient under this influence. It’s a strong time for gravitating towards people and situations that help us succeed or advance our goals. Shared goals and interests connect us with others. The focus now is on eliminating harmful elements in our lives, particularly in the pursuit of work or health goals, so we can advance with more conviction. This transit encourages cooperation, focus, and practical ability. The Moon spends the day in Leo, and we are honorable, creative, and loving.
SEPTEMBER 15
The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 2:37 PM EDT when it enters Virgo. The Leo Moon is devoted, affectionate, and generous. We might seek out channels for expressing personal emotional drama or creative potential. With the Virgo Moon, we’re inclined to pull up our sleeves and get down to work. We crave organization and want to get things accomplished. This Moon transit encourages our desire to excel at our work, pay particular attention to health, and help others. Venus forms a square to Uranus late morning, presenting a potential challenge or struggle. Values and tastes may clash, and social activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness are possible in our relationships. It may be best to hold off on decision-making regarding finances, as there is a tendency to act on a whim rather than reason. We may only need a change of pace.
The void Moon occurs from 11:09 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 2:37 PM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 16
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Virgo, and we crave a sense of order and organization. The Moon is Balsamic with a New Moon occurring tomorrow in the sign. It’s best not to begin a new project, relationship, or other important initiative during the Balsamic phase of the Moon, as it is a time of endings and symbolic descent into unconsciousness. Reflection is favored over innovation now. Mercury is moving toward a square to Jupiter, suggesting potentially impatient speech and decision-making. We can very well waste our time on inconsequential matters, but this can also be a good time to stretch our minds to entertain bigger possibilities. There is a tendency to overstate, say too much, exaggerate, or latch onto wild ideas. We may be somewhat blind to immediate realities.
SEPTEMBER 17
Mercury forms a square to Jupiter this morning, and we can feel rushed to make a decision when it’s better to wait. Our ideas are grand, but we may jump to conclusions or speak on a matter too soon. At 7:00 AM EDT today, the New Moon occurs as the Moon aligns with the Sun in the sign of Virgo. A time of new beginnings, this New Moon presents an excellent opportunity for us to formulate some goals regarding “all things Virgo.” We’d do well to concentrate on new ways to get our day-to-day life organized. The New Moon in Virgo is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Virgin, such as building our powers of healthy, constructive discrimination, beginning a new project that requires attention to details, starting a health regime, setting up specific routines that will help us manage our lives in constructive and mindful ways, and handling the finer details of our day-to-day life in an organized, step-by-step fashion so that we can free our minds of clutter. Striving for perfection can be a wonderful challenge, as long as we don’t allow ourselves to become overly focused on flaws and feel guilty or stressed about them. The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until 2:56 PM EDT when it enters relationship-focused, gracious Libra. The Sun forms a trine to Saturn this afternoon, helping to stabilize and ground us, while also boosting self-discipline and moderation. We can enjoy a real sense of strength and pride in our ability to meet our responsibilities. We are more aware of our limitations–and willing to accept them. Enjoyment of our duties, work, or obligations can be in focus now. While this is a practical influence, it’s not the time to make big decisions since a New Moon occurs today, and we’re symbolically in the dark.
The void Moon occurs from 7:42 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Libra at 2:56 PM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 18
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Libra, aligning with Mercury in Libra tonight. With the Moon in Libra, coming to a sense of balance and harmony is important to us. The Moon-Mercury conjunction helps us find common ground and open up the lines of communication. However, Mercury and Neptune form a quincunx, which can diffuse our concentration or focus. We may be wavering due to uncertainty as it can be challenging to combine logic and intuition cohesively. Or, the tendency to daydream comes at the expense of productivity and clear communication. There can be some mental disorganization to manage.
SEPTEMBER 19
With the Sun forming a quincunx to retrograde Mars today, there can be some inner tension between the will and performance/energy levels, and a tendency to fly off the handle can be with us now. It’s hard to find satisfaction or a sense of peace under this influence. We may feel decidedly “out of sorts” and on the fence about key issues. There can be tension revolving around going after what we want since what we think we should do seems at odds with our desires or motivation. This transit can present some mild challenges and disrupt the flow. We may feel off, which can ultimately prompt us to make some useful edits. The Moon heads into the sign of Scorpio at 2:33 PM EDT, drawing us to transformative and emotionally exciting experiences. We’re interested in discovering deeper truths and motives.
The void Moon occurs from 10:29 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 2:33 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Virgo You’re coming into a new cycle centered on taking what you know and what you’ve got and then making the most of it in the real world. Assimilating information and experience, learning lessons and putting them into practice – that’s the focus as this cycle unfolds. It’s a time for prudence and stewardship, a time to tend to the details. You probably already have the grand ideals and visions: now you must get your hands dirty with the bricks and mortar and your mind busy with putting it all together.
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
