Last Quarter Moon
The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, December 7th, 2020, at 7:36 PM EST.
Monday evening, the Last Quarter Moon is exact when the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Virgo.
The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.
This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might consider recent revelations, what they mean to us, and our next steps. Going forward, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary. We’re sorting out what does and doesn’t work for us.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 16 degrees and 22 minutes of Virgo square the Sun at 16 degrees and 22 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 14 to 18 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Sagittarius; Mercury is in Sagittarius; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 21-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves. While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking. We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.
Mercury is in Sagittarius from December 1-20. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.
Venus is in Scorpio from November 21-December 15. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is passionate, sensual, and intense energy. Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital.
Mars is in Aries from June 27, 2020, to January 6, 2021. [This is longer than usual due to the retrograde of Mars from September 9-November 13, 2020.] Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit. Jupiter will enter Aquarius on December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn has returned to the sign of Capricorn in retrograde motion (early July). In 2020, Saturn divides its time between the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and then later, from December 17, 2020, to March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience.
Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio. We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth,” reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
This week: On Sunday and early Monday, there can be some reluctance to commit or to show our affections. On Wednesday and Thursday, we seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are quite devoted to our partners, and we seek such devotion in return. A Venus-Pluto sextile supports intimacy, understanding, and depth in our connections.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus contra-parallel Uranus November 29-30. Questions of freedom, change, specialness, and experimentation are raised in our relationships.
Venus trine Neptune December 4-5. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.
Venus quincunx Mars December 5-6. When we attempt to be friendly, we seem to miss the mark. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires are at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result. This is a less-than-ideal transit under which to begin a new relationship.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron December 6-7. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus sextile Pluto December 9-10. Subtly powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions.
Venus sextile Jupiter December 13-14. This aspect generates a happy, friendly, and optimistic attitude. People are a little more outgoing and sociable. Favors travel, education, and culture. Romantic opportunities. Harmony and good will.
Venus sextile Saturn December 14-15. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus trine Chiron December 18-19. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, December 5th, from 5:29 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Sunday, December 6th, at 2:47 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, December 8th, from 5:36 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Libra at 7:02 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Thursday, December 10th, from 7:57 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 8:59 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Saturday, December 12th, from 8:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 9:39 PM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus quincunx Mars. When we try to be friendly, we seem to miss the mark. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires are at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result.
Mercury quincunx Uranus. It is difficult to get a point across without rubbing people the wrong way or misrepresenting ourselves. Uncertainty reigns today. Avoid making hasty decisions that you will later regret. Impulsiveness, disorganization, unreceptive to practical advice and/or your ideas are not well-received.
Mercury semi-square Pluto. “Suspicious minds” characterize this transit, although if we harness the energy, we can develop strategies to get to the bottom of any matter. Mistrust, investigations. Some level of mental stress, trouble, or pressure.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron. Blocks to intimacy are possible now as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships with others. We might have a hard time learning from one another as a result.
Sun square Neptune. Concentrating on artistic or spiritual pursuits is better than focusing on things that require straightforward, factual thinking today. It can be difficult knowing where or how to direct your willpower under this influence. It’s also a challenge knowing where you stand with others. Avoid such things as scheduling surgery, important appointments, job interviews, or launches of new projects at this time.
Mercury semi-square Jupiter. We experience information overload, and we neglect to consider details. People tend to exaggerate today. Monotonous mental tasks are harder to take under this influence. Our minds are restless.
Venus sextile Pluto. If we seize the opportunity, this is a good time for both finances and relationships. The feelings are impassioned, but not in an offensive or unpleasant way. We are focused and confident, and we appreciate depth of feeling and authenticity in our dealings with others.
Mercury semi-square Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks we thought we had finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hyper-sensitivity and criticism–these are all potentials now. The energy is best used for focusing on fixing errors rather than harping on how irritating they are!
Sun trine Mars. Energy and vitality are strong. Natural confidence that doesn’t come across as offensive. A good time to take the initiative. Favors physical activity. Effective decision-making is possible now.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

DECEMBER 6
The Moon continues its transit of Leo and its void Moon until 2:47 PM, after which it moves into Virgo. Mercury forms a quincunx with Uranus this morning and later heads toward a semi-square with Pluto, which can find us feeling a little unsettled mentally. It can be a challenge to gain others’ understanding temporarily. We should watch for poorly-considered decisions, impulsive communications, and disorganization leading to misunderstandings. We might obsess over an issue that we can’t control, and we can be mistrustful. However, if we harness the energy and use it for good, we can develop strategies to get to the bottom of a matter.
The void Moon continues until 2:47 PM EST today, when the Moon enters Virgo.
DECEMBER 7
The Moon spends the day in Virgo, encouraging our desire to help, sort, analyze, and organize. With this morning’s Venus-Chiron aspect, we can feel a little out of sync on a social level. There is some tendency to keep our emotional distance, and we might watch for a tendency to focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships. The Last Quarter Moon is exact as the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Virgo Moon this evening, signaling a time to review and sort rather than push something new. Until after the New Moon/Solar Eclipse next week, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary. We might consider our recent revelations, what they mean to us, and what’s our possible next step. The Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune tonight, and we can be distractable, perhaps feeling a little exasperated. Taking a break from overthinking can help.
DECEMBER 8
The Moon continues in analytical, conscientious Virgo until 7:02 PM EST, harmonizing with Venus, Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn. These influences encourage our desire to learn, acquire skills, excel at our work, pay special attention to health, and assist others. We’re more goal-oriented and disciplined than usual. We can be feeling good about our work, obligations, commitments, and other purposeful activities. The Moon enters balanced and conciliatory Libra at 7:02 PM. With this Moon transit, we tend to look at things from a different perspective and give our relationships their due attention.
The void Moon occurs from 5:36 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Libra at 7:02 PM EST.
DECEMBER 9
The Sun forms a square to Neptune today, and we may feel that the route to our desires is a roundabout one. There can be some disorganization, impracticality, or a temporary drain of energy. We are challenged to consider our spiritual needs, which might seem to conflict with our plans and goals, or we may need to confront the areas of our lives where reality isn’t measuring up to our ideals. Until we find ways to incorporate imagination and spirit in fulfilling ways into our lives, there can be problems feeling inspired or motivated. It can be a time of increased spiritual awareness, vision, and inspiration, although we might first struggle with this. There may be detours or distractions to deal with now. This influence takes away our sense of certainty, and we can either go with that flow or resist it and feel a little lost and without direction temporarily. We might resolve to attend to overlooked spiritual needs before pushing forward. Mercury’s semi-square to Jupiter tonight also impacts our perceptions and decision-making as we try to make sense of the information before us and attempt to find meaning in it. We should watch for inflating the good of a situation if making important decisions.
DECEMBER 10
Venus is sextile Pluto today, and the Sun in Sagittarius is heading toward a trine with Mars in Aries. This can be a good time to do what we love, follow our passions, or pursue a pleasure more heartily than usual. We seek authenticity in our dealings. If we seize the opportunity, we can advance our interests with finances and relationships or arrive at a comfortably strategic approach to these affairs. We’re motivated, enterprising, resourceful, and confident that we can accomplish much. Stress eases as we feel confident about our abilities and our judgment. There is a stronger than usual desire to put plans into motion, to take the lead, and to keep busy. Effective decision-making is possible now. Even so, a minor aspect between Mercury and Saturn this evening points to potential delays or miscommunications. As well the Moon in Libra until 8:59 PM EST picks up some tense aspects, suggesting that it’s easier than usual to feel emotionally disconnected or sensitive. The Moon transits Scorpio from 8:59 PM forward, drawing us to transformative and emotionally exciting experiences.
The void Moon occurs from 7:57 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 8:59 PM EST.
DECEMBER 11
With the Sun’s alignment to the true South Node of the Moon, we should watch for holding onto something that no longer supports our growth only because it’s comfortable or familiar. If we’re looking for clarity, we get a window into areas of our lives to which we cling too tightly, perhaps to our detriment. This may relate to fears of facing facts or losing inspiration or faith in our current beliefs. Mars in harmony with the Nodes can help us find ways to work through these things. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Scorpio, and we seek a stronger emotional connection to the world around us or a particular project or person. Conversations and thoughts are a little more probing.
DECEMBER 12
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio for most of the day–until 9:39 PM EST. It aligns with Venus and harmonizes with Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn. It’s a good time for observation and strategy. From 9:39 PM EST forward, the Sagittarius Moon is exploratory, philosophical, and spontaneous. Our focus turns outward, and we set our sights high. Optimism is one of the positive traits of this position; neglecting to see the essential details of a plan is a weakness. The latter is a little more likely tonight as we head toward a Mercury-Neptune square. Wishful thinking might factor into our decisions. We could find ourselves without clear instructions or details, or it can be challenging to follow and clearly communicate facts with this influence in play.
The void Moon occurs from 8:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 9:39 PM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Sagittarius You’re now embarking on a trek into a land of dreams – not passive daydreams, but vibrant visions of what may be. The time has come to stop looking at the world as it is and asking why. Now’s the time to imagine the world as it could be, and the question has become: “Why not?” You also cannot do everything you imagine now, but you cannot do anything you don’t KNOW you can do – so believe, and dare to make it happen! This means expanding your mind, your belief system, your whole base of knowledge and experience. Time’s a wastin’ – let no grass grow between your toes!
Mercury in Sagittarius A time of expanding your mental horizons is at hand. Religion, philosophy, law, and education are some of the things that may have special importance for you now. Being in touch with faraway people and places satisfies an intellectual yearning – curiosity will take you anywhere and maybe everywhere.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first, or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
