Daily Trends
The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, August 25th, 2020, at 1:57 PM EDT.
On Tuesday, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Virgo forms a square to the Moon in Sagittarius.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.
Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This lunation occurs at 2 degrees and 59 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 1 to 5 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Virgo; Mercury is in Virgo; Venus is in Cancer; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Virgo from August 22-September 22. Our focus shifts to the pieces of the puzzle–the little details of our lives. It is now time to take care of practical concerns. Tending to the details of everyday life may not sound like loads of fun, but it can certainly free us from unnecessary stress that results from “collecting” odds and ends of unfinished business. This is an ideal time to get organized, to do detail work, and to improve communications on the job.
Mercury is in Virgo from August 19-September 5. We value precision in speech, thought, and process. This is a time when we analyze and discriminate between what we deem useful or impractical. Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules. Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in detail. We should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in an overly factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.
Venus is in Cancer from August 7-September 6. In Cancer, Venus is nurturing, protective and self-protective, cautious, and fertile. We experience many emotional ups and downs in love under this influence due to increased sensitivity and impressionability. We are tender, romantic, and attached. Cancer love is dedicated, warm, and devoted. We show our love through our devotion, care, and concern. We are affectionate and cuddly, and we’re at our best when we feel safe and secure.
Mars is in Aries from June 27, 2020, to January 6, 2021. [This is longer than usual due to the retrograde of Mars from September 9-November 13, 2020.] Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
Saturn has returned to the sign of Capricorn in retrograde motion (early July). In 2020, Saturn divides its time between the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July, 1, 2020, and then later, from December 17, 2020, to March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Cancer from August 7-September 6. We treat lovers with sympathy and tenderness, providing the emotional nurturing they need. We tend to “play it safe” when it comes to relationships. Love and devotion are most important to us, providing us with a sense of inner security. We seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are devoted and seek familiarity, but we might be possessive, manipulative, or stifling. Our fear of rejection is overdeveloped, and we offer our hearts cautiously as a result. We pay more attention to our lovers’ feelings than their words. We feel threatened if a lover acts in an impersonal, overly independent, or detached manner. Safe and solid relationships are more appealing. Romantic and emotional hurts are very hard to forget.
In Cancer, Venus is nurturing, protective and self-protective, cautious, and fertile. We experience many emotional ups and downs in love under this influence due to increased sensitivity and impressionability. We are tender, romantic, and attached. We show our love through our devotion, care, and concern. We are at our best when we feel safe and secure.
This week: On Tuesday, we’re ready to rise to a challenge or go out of our way for love. Passions run high, and we’re easily bored with anything mundane or normal. We’re inclined to dramatize our lives. We’re hungry for more, but possibly insatiable, in the love department. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone, or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.
On Thursday, we treat lovers with more tenderness or we see them in a more sensitive, obliging light. We’re particularly open to romance, and we can be quite sensitive to others’ needs and backstories. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions, taking the pressure off in personal relationships.
On Saturday, buried fears and resentments in our relationships can bubble up and demand attention. It’s a period of intense feelings, as well as possible emotional distress and tension caused by romantic troubles or social manipulation. Fears of betrayal may get the best of us. However, it’s a strong time for getting in touch with problem areas that may have been undermining us and our relationships. Although this can be purging, troubles can emerge in disruptive ways and mindfulness can help.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Cancer Mothering (or being mothered), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time – these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Venus sextile Uranus August 18. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus opposition Jupiter August 25. We are easily bored with the everyday responsibilities and routines of our love lives and are now inclined to dramatize our lives. As a result, our love natures are strong but insatiable. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone, or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.
Venus trine Neptune August 27. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.
Venus opposition Pluto August 29-30. This is a period of intense feelings, as well as possible emotional distress and tension caused by romantic troubles or social manipulation. An experience of being used or abused may cause us suffering or disappointment. Sexually driven emotions are likely now. Fears of betrayal may get the best of us.
Venus opposition Saturn September 1-2. We keep others at arm’s length, unsure of whether we are loved or not. This is a somewhat inhibiting influence when it appears that people value utility over true love. An element of seriousness permeates our love relationships. We may feel criticized and inhibited, unloved and unsatisfied, but our worst enemies may be ourselves and our own fears of getting close to others.
Venus square Mars September 3-4. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus sextile Mercury September 4. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, August 23rd, from 12:20 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 6:16 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, August 25th, from 2:27 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 8:49 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, August 27th, from 8:00 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:37 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, August 29th, from 3:31 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 8:37 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, but with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from approximately 1:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 24th, to approximately 2:25 AM on Tuesday, August 25th, while the Moon is in Scorpio. The next window won’t be until September 3rd.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury sesquiquadrate Pluto. “Suspicious minds” characterize this transit, although if we harness the energy, we can develop strategies to get to the bottom of any matter. Mistrust, investigations. Some level of mental stress and pressure. A troubled mind.
Mercury quincunx Chiron. Decisions can be hard to come by under this influence, as we tend to doubt our perceptions or the effectiveness of our ability to solve problems. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now, which can lead to misunderstandings.
Mars square Saturn. Frustrations, smoldering anger, and a feeling of being blocked when we are attempting to go after what we want characterize this transit. Our desire to take action and to constructively express our aggressive urges feels thwarted or blocked. It can feel like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks.
Mercury trine Uranus. This is an opportune time to attend meetings and other organized group activities, to communicate online, and to take part in activities involving computers, scientific projects, and metaphysics. Unexpected gains may be realized through such mediums. The intuition is strong, and insights seem to come from “out of the blue”. Original, creative ideas are easy to come by.
Sun sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We may feel vague restlessness and discontent with life as it is. We want more, but perhaps too much. Overestimation, wastefulness, and exaggeration. Elevated moods, but unstable ones, as they may not be based on reality.
Venus opposition Jupiter. The love nature is strong, but given to extremes. Over-inflated expectations and the tendency to overstate our affections are things to watch out for. We may overvalue something (or someone), perhaps in order to add more drama to our lives, or to feel bigger than life. We are sociable, in the mood to party, dramatic, extravagant, and inclined to overindulge as a result of this inner discontent and desire for more from life than daily routines.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks you thought you finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hyper-sensitivity and criticism.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Mars. Impulsive communications and hasty decision-making. We can accomplish more if we are careful not to be too hasty and forget details. “Haste makes waste”.
Venus trine Neptune. We are more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. Compassion, harmony, kindness, and openness characterize this transit. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. This can be a “magical” time on a romantic and social level. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. Romance is highly favored.
Venus semi-square Sun. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Mercury trine Jupiter. Looking for meaning in mundane affairs, positive thinking, insights, cooperation–these are themes of this influence. Our ideas are big and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. We prefer to think about the big picture rather than becoming bogged down with details. This transit favors short trips, writing, teaching, studying, submitting applications and forms, accurate diagnoses and observations (all things equal).

AUGUST 23
The Moon continues its transit of Libra until it enters Scorpio at 6:16 AM EDT. The Scorpio Moon scopes out the hidden layers of matters and adds intensity to our feelings or approach. We can become wound up rather easily with Mercury in a minor challenging aspect to Pluto today. Mental tension is possible now, ideally motivating us to handle problem areas. We can have a slightly suspicious way of looking at the way things work. If others are not agreeing or adopting our ideas, we may take this as a personal affront. Instead of getting where we want to go directly, we could take a roundabout route and manipulate others. This combination can lead to creative and intense thinking, but also some impatience with shallow or slow thinking in others. There can be tension and pressure experienced now, as well as some irritability.
The void Moon occurs from 12:20 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 6:16 AM EDT.
AUGUST 24
With Mercury and Chiron at odds this morning, it’s not easy to read the intention behind the words used to communicate, which can lead to minor misunderstandings. This aspect is tricky and can suggest some doubts and sensitivity. A Mercury-Uranus trine tomorrow will help open our minds to out-of-the-ordinary possibilities. First, we must deal with this afternoon’s Mars-Saturn square. We may be feeling blocked from asserting ourselves or pursuing our desires. This is a time for slowing down and making adjustments and edits, as we may encounter resistance if we push ahead. It can seem like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks. We might deal with disapproval or a dip in confidence. It’s a time to draw on patience and develop our endurance, and it’s a better time for maintenance than it is for moving forward. We might recognize some of our limits and adjust our speed accordingly. The Moon spends the day in perceptive Scorpio.
AUGUST 25
Today’s astrology is busy. The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 8:49 AM EDT when it enters Sagittarius. The First Quarter Moon occurs this afternoon when the Sun in Virgo forms a square to the Moon in Sagittarius. Our initiative is strong, although it tends to come as a result of conflict or tension. A Mercury-Uranus trine opens us to creative ideas. Communications may be a little compromised or strained due to perceiving things emotionally or through our insecurities or fears as Mercury gets between the Mars-Saturn square later today. Ideally, we’re finding answers that are not the most obvious ones, and we can get to some exciting places on a mental level. The Sun forms a sesquiquadrate to Jupiter, and Venus opposes Jupiter today, adding a layer of restlessness to the day’s astrology. We seek a little more from our lives, pleasures, money, or relationships. Channeled well, these aspects encourage us to improve but otherwise might lead to over-indulgence, immoderation, or exaggeration. We should watch for overestimating our capabilities now since we may feel we can take on more than is reasonable. High expectations can leave us vulnerable to ups and downs. If we’re not in touch with our feelings or are discontented, it can be tempting to overreach. Routines in our lives become glaringly unsatisfying now. We might have trouble setting or recognizing boundaries temporarily. We might also feel torn between two equally appealing desires, situations, or viewpoints. The Venus-Jupiter opposition is a feel-good aspect but inclines to excess. The desire to experience it all is active today.
The void Moon occurs from 2:27 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 8:49 AM EDT.
AUGUST 26
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Sagittarius, encouraging us to explore, learn, and discover. It’s an optimistic and enthusiastic transit that brings natural energy to the day. Bored with the mundane, breaking the routine is appealing now. However, if we’ve attached ourselves to unrealizable dreams, we may feel a little deflated this evening as the Moon squares Neptune. A Mercury-Pallas connection can stimulate interesting thoughts, ideas, and conversations. We’re expressing ourselves clearly, and we’re better able to order our thoughts and identify meaningful patterns. We can enjoy making plans, lists, and connections today.
AUGUST 27
The Moon continues its transit of Sagittarius until it enters Capricorn at 1:37 PM EDT. The Sagittarius Moon values experience, learning, and truth, while the Moon in Capricorn transit encourages our responsibility and practicality. Today’s Venus-Neptune trine colors the day with compassion and acceptance. We see the very best in people now, which eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. We’re also inclined to glamorize objects, situations, and pleasures. We prioritize spiritual and emotional concerns over material ones at this time. We are more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. The Moon forms a trine to Mars and then the Sun, stimulating optimism, cooperation, and positivity.
The void Moon occurs from 8:00 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:37 PM EDT.
AUGUST 28
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Capricorn, encouraging us to consider our practical priorities. However, a semi-square between the Sun and Venus can stir up some discontent. We can be especially hungry for appreciation. What we want to do and think we should do can be at odds now, and we may be indecisive and less than productive. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and avoid watch for overindulging or procrastinating. We can be especially sensitive to imbalances in our environment and relationships. We might also aim to worry less about what others may be thinking of us. We’re reaching for our joy or seeking to grow, expand, and improve as the Moon aligns with Jupiter.
AUGUST 29
Mercury forms a trine to Jupiter this morning, boosting our optimism and faith. We might gain a positive outlook through conversations and a sense of hope or trust in the future. We might benefit from big-picture thinking. We are seeking out a little extra meaning to our projects and experiences. Our ideas are big, and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. Curiosity is stimulated. As the day advances, however, we’re also seeking truths but in a much different way. Venus approaches an opposition to Pluto, and suspiciousness can set in. This aspect may play to our insecurities and fears. The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn until 8:37 PM, forming a square to Mars this afternoon and pitting our sense of independence against duty. The Moon transits Aquarius from 8:37 PM forward, and we thrive on intellectual stimulation, progress, and unusual or unconventional experiences.
The void Moon occurs from 3:31 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 8:37 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Virgo You’re coming into a new cycle centered on taking what you know and what you’ve got and then making the most of it in the real world. Assimilating information and experience, learning lessons and putting them into practice – that’s the focus as this cycle unfolds. It’s a time for prudence and stewardship, a time to tend to the details. You probably already have the grand ideals and visions: now you must get your hands dirty with the bricks and mortar and your mind busy with putting it all together.
Mercury in Virgo Mental discipline and patience are keynoted as you enter into a new cycle. Thinking things through, accounting for all the details, making careful measurements: these and similar experiences keep your mind active and involved. An interest in health and work may come to the fore.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
