Overview of 2019
The year ahead is an interesting one, filled with contradictory trends, but offering us the opportunity to find a satisfying balance. Mind you, we’re not to stick with the middle road; instead, we’re encouraged to “go hard” in different areas with very different approaches. The pairing of Jupiter in Sagittarius, which is faithful and bold, with Saturn in Capricorn, which is disciplined and conservative, is one example – they’re starkly different approaches, yet they can work side by side without too much in the way of disruption. Later in the year when Jupiter enters Capricorn, we get the chance to merge these energies in a winning combination, although these bodies don’t officially meet until 2020 and while in the next sign, Aquarius. The North Node traveling through the sign of Cancer in a year when its opposite sign (Capricorn) is dominating is another example! This does help us recognize the need to do a whole lot of work in our inner AND outer worlds. With these energies, nothing is canceled out. Instead, we’re compartmentalizing, and quite successfully at that, in certain life departments.
Until early December, Jupiter travels through its own sign, Sagittarius. With Saturn in Capricorn and Neptune in Pisces, there is a lot of this kind of thing going on in 2019! Last year, Jupiter expanded our awareness of our intimate relationships, personal power, and coping skills. Now, with Jupiter in Sagittarius, a new focus comes into play. We’re encouraged to increase our cultural and spiritual awareness, expand our higher minds, broaden our experiences, and put our faith in the universe this year.We trust in something higher than us, and this gives us a sense that we are doing the right thing and that we are spiritually protected–“things will work out” is the overall attitude now.
We should guard against over-confidence if it leads to recklessness, although we have some excellent support for this with Saturn in Capricorn concurrently. In 2019, we identify strongly with our opinions, beliefs, and perceptions, and we may take it quite personally if others disagree with us! While more planets in their own signs perform particularly well, there can be some myopia or stubbornness involved which should be a concern. Kept under watch, however, we’re likely to feel more natural, straightforward, and confident in 2019.
We have a stronger sense than usual that we’re creating our own opportunities. While embracing our bolder, fierier natures seems to be more conducive to growth and expansion this year with Jupiter in Sagittarius, we’re also tuning into our Saturn in Capricorn need to hunker down and attend to our practical needs.
This is a year to be more open-handed and generous, tolerant, and inspirational. It’s particularly important–more so than ever– to practice what we preach with both Jupiter in Sagittarius and Saturn in Capricorn! However, we should watch that we don’t always prioritize speaking the truth over exercising respect and sensitivity to others. We may find particular success in travel, education, teaching, sports, publishing, and foreign cultures until early December.
We can look to the Sagittarius part of our charts for where we may be finding our joy at this stage in our development in 2019. It’s where we are expanding or improving in some significant manner. There’s a need to refine our approach to these affairs in order to realize these benefits and gains, and with the fiery, mutable sign of Sagittarius, it’s about pursuing our objectives with more confidence and optimism without going overboard. Jupiter in adventurous, and virtuous Sagittarius urges us to seek knowledge, understanding, and truth. We learn and understand that we may be limiting ourselves if we stick to the same old, same old, and we instinctively want to venture out, do new things, meet new people, and learn new things. We’re encouraged to pull ourselves out of the mundane, at least from time to time, to nourish our spirits. The idea is that following tight or rigid schedules or planning ahead too carefully will slow down our growth.
Mind you, with Saturn in Capricorn at the same time, we should be finding a balance between expansion and contraction, aiming to recognize which areas of life require a more generous and bold approach (Sagittarius) and which areas require a more rule-conscious, conservative approach (Capricorn). Fortunately, we have our charts as guides!
Jupiter feels comfortable, authentic, and in charge as it transits Sagittarius. Even so, it’s not getting much help from the outer planets as it does.
We especially value honesty, uprightness, justice, optimism, enthusiasm, truth tellers, whistleblowers, explorers, open-mindedness, faithfulness, adventurousness, and courage.
This sign can be nomadic or restless at times. We’re in search of new and inspiring ideas and adventures or experiences, preferring to learn as we do, firsthand. We may find that trips or new experiences are especially refreshing during this cycle — more so than usual. Rewards seem to emerge as we move outside of our usual routines and bounds. There can be a stronger desire to find the truth, the word, or something that helps us find more meaning. We may see more of these themes and topics in the media as we become more and more fascinated with Sagittarian energies. We should be especially mindful of becoming too self-righteous.
It helps that Jupiter is in its own sign, although it’s often acting on its own or fighting Neptune this year! We may be wrestling with our expectations, faith, and dreams from January to October, and we may need to deal with the consequences of disorganization, extravagance, neglect, or exaggeration. We need to watch carefully for a tendency to evade and avoid things, as well as for writing ourselves new beliefs or philosophies that justify this avoidance. There can be a lot of wandering, meandering, and lack of groundedness happening with this influence. We might have troubles setting boundaries for ourselves. There is a need to come down to earth from time to time. Some routines, discipline, regularity, and rhythms should be enforced to counteract this tendency. Spiritual inspiration is a potential, however, as we shed false beliefs, expectations, and paths.
Along the same timeline, Jupiter forms a minor challenging aspect to Uranus (Uranus and Neptune are semi-square), reinforcing feelings of restlessness if our dreams are no longer fulfilling or inspiring us. Watch for impractical ventures and unusual tangents with weak staying power.
Fortunately, Saturn’s concurrent transit of Capricorn this year will help us simplify, although it can also temper our enthusiasm.
Saturn transits its own sign, Capricorn, throughout the year 2019. Saturn entered Capricorn on December 19th, 2017, and will continue moving through its own sign until the year 2020. Saturn does very well in Capricorn, as its ruler, although it can be a somewhat insular, narrowly focused, and perhaps strict or stern influence. This is a time for checking in with ourselves and the structures of our lives to see if we’re following the rules and meeting our responsibilities. Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, and Pisces receive stabilizing energy. Aries, Cancer, and Libra may initially balk at what feels too restrictive. Capricorn gets a bit of both. Gemini, Leo, and Sagittarius don’t understand this energy as well as most others, and will need to adjust accordingly. Leo and Sagittarius, however, are completely in tune with Jupiter’s transit of Sagittarius until December.
Saturn will eventually meet up with Pluto in the sign, but not until 2020! In fact, Saturn doesn’t form very many major aspects to the outer planets during its transit through Capricorn.
Health issues in 2019 can be more frequently connected to the hips, thighs, arthritis, rheumatism, the spine and sciatic nerve, teeth, bones, fevers, and breathing abnormalities.
Uranus more officially moves from Aries to Taurus in 2019 after a back-and-forth transition period last year. It completes its journey of Aries on March 6, 2019, when it enters Taurus for the long haul. Uranus in Taurus is bound to shake up our attitude towards money and personal possessions, and it’s a time for bold innovations in these areas. We can expect changes to what we value on non-material levels as well, and we’re inclined to value ourselves in new ways through the course of this transit that lasts until April 2026.
For most of 2019, eclipses fall along the Cancer-Capricorn axis, and this is particularly interesting with the continued strong emphasis on Capricorn this year. This set of eclipses calls on us to seek a better balance between our attention to the outside world or our professional/public lives and our focus on developing our personal lives, family, or domestic/inner world. The final eclipse in the Leo-Aquarius set occurs in January with a Lunar Eclipse in Leo, which serves as a final thrust towards balancing romance and friendship, individual and group efforts, as well as personal and impersonal expression. With the North Node in Cancer all of 2019 (until May 2020), we are called upon to feed our foundation–all of that which we call “home,” including the foundation we have built inside of ourselves, needs to be tended to and honored. We need to pay more attention to our instincts, our deepest needs, and our feelings; and to recognize the importance of our family and our personal circle of friends and the security, sense of belonging, and safety we derive from them. We’re challenged to answer to our hearts and call upon our empathy as we step away from time to time from our practical affairs and viewpoint to consider what’s in our hearts and what’s for the best on emotional levels for ourselves and our loved ones.
While in 2018 both Venus and Mars were retrograde, 2019 is free of these apparent backward-moving cycles for these planets. Of course, it has its usual Mercury retrograde cycles and the retrogrades of the outer planets, as well, but the absence of retro Venus and Mars cycles tends to leave us feeling a little freer and less blocked. Love and desire seems a little more straightforward than it did last year.
The areas of our charts where we find Taurus can involve some shake-ups, new thinking and approaches, and radical changes in some cases. The areas of our charts where we find Capricorn involve some lessons and strengthening exercises, and they require simplifying and hard (or smarter) work. The Sagittarius areas receive boosts and blessings. In the last few weeks of 2019, Capricorn areas of our charts also thrive, and this feels particularly good since they have had in the past few years (and to continue to have) heavy energy with them. This doesn’t cancel things out; instead, it boosts the pleasure we derive from our firming up and strengthening actions.
In business in 2019, as with all other areas, there are very different themes working concurrently. Jupiter encourages a spontaneous, courageous approach to business, while Saturn wants us to be conservative. While Jupiter asks us to grow, expand, and believe, Saturn asks us to simplify, test, and question. We may need to use our better judgment on when to do what, although Jupiter would prefer we don’t plan too much ahead and instead leave some room for spontaneity, inspiration, and discovery! They’re both quite stubbornly and comfortably in their own signs, so they won’t want to compromise. However, there is one thing that Jupiter in Sagittarius and Saturn in Capricorn DO agree upon, and it’s that we need to be principled to succeed in business and career during current transits. It’s an important time for doing the right moral thing! We should also be approaching money in an entirely new way as Uranus transits Taurus most of the year. We need to deal with money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge and can be an important business focus or trend. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Concerning love and relationships, Sagittarius is not especially committed or content, and as such, relationships that leave us feeling wanting or that seem to suppress our desire to grow and improve can become hard to take during Jupiter’s transit of Sagittarius. Even so, we give others the benefit of the doubt during this transit, believing in one another more than usual. Truth and justice are most important to us while Jupiter is in Sagittarius and this, combined with strict Saturn in Capricorn, suggests that we may be less tolerant of lies and deception in our relationships than usual during this cycle. We might consider exploring, traveling, and learning together to improve our connections. We’re attracted to people who are spontaneous, bold, honest, brave, and enthusiastic. There’s a revolution happening with Uranus in Taurus, too, and it’s about approaching sexuality and gratification differently. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued and we are embracing a new-age view of the feminine. Women’s “roles” in relationships are revolutionizing this year and in coming years.
Jupiter heads into the sign of Capricorn on December 2, 2019, where it finds headliners, Saturn and Pluto, already settled in! While Jupiter is in Capricorn, we attract the most good fortune when we organize and direct, conduct ourselves with integrity, are ethical and mature. We need to take a disciplined, committed, step-by-step approach to the realization of our goals, and we enjoy getting organized and in control of our lives!
We have a strong need for concrete results as we close out 2019. Our attitude towards work and practical, realistic action is positive. Our judgment is prudent and mature, but we may lack the imagination or risk-taking attitude that allows us to innovate. We need to learn to be more flexible and tolerant of weaknesses. Jupiter is in its fall in the sign of Capricorn–in other words, it is not at its happiest, most expansive position in this Saturn-ruled sign. This transit increases our commitment as we find more joy in taking charge of our lives. We’re ambitious and resourceful now.
The New Year chart’s exact timing depends on where you are in the world, of course, so the above is a 0-degree Aries chart.
Where we find Capricorn in our charts, we’re firming up, refining, and perfecting in 2019; and where we find Sagittarius in our charts, we’re discovering more joy and opportunity this year until December. Saturn fixes, balances, and gives us lessons whichever sign, house, or point it visits. Jupiter teaches too, but uses a far different approach, aiming to open us up and fill us with faith and courage to explore and discover. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto play their parts, too, of course, as do the inner planets and luminaries on a smaller scale, and my yearly horoscopes (overviews of which are below), monthly horoscopes, and daily horoscopes interpret their roles in the solar charts of each sign.
