First Quarter Moon
The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, March 2, 2020, at 2:57 PM EST.
On Monday, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Pisces forms a square with the Moon in Gemini. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 12 degrees and 42 minutes of Gemini forming a square with the Sun at 12 degrees and 42 minutes of Pisces, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 11 to 15 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Pisces; Mercury is in Pisces until the 4th, when it retreats into Aquarius; Venus is in Aries unti the 4th, after which Venus is in Taurus; Mars is in Capricorn.
The Sun is in Pisces from February 18-March 19/20. With the Sun in Pisces, we are guided by altruistic feelings. We are less motivated to do than we are to feel, imagine, and dream. A “what will be, will be” attitude reigns, and we are guided by a sense of universal correlations. Pisces rules empathy, selfless love, devotion, and wisdom. Its shadow side rules self-pity, a feeling of being victimized by life, passivity, and elusiveness.
Mercury is in Pisces from February 3-March 4 and then March 16-April 11. When Mercury is in Pisces, our thinking processes are more visual, intuitive, and imaginative. We are especially attuned to the world of emotion, which colors both our thoughts and our communication style. We guess well, express ourselves with imagery, and make decisions intuitively. We are more attracted to consciousness-raising information.
Mercury is in Aquarius from March 4-16. When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Aries from February 7-March 4. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now. Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to Aries. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
Venus is in Taurus from March 4-April 3. In Taurus, Venus is very sensual (naturally), content, and possessive. We seek security and value that which lasts. Our appetite for pleasure is strong. Taurus values the here and the now as well as the world of the five senses. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance are most important now. Holding on to someone we love is our tendency under Venus in Taurus. The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own. On the financial side, Venus in Taurus looks for high-quality, solid, practical, and long-lasting items. Holding on to our possessions is more likely now.
Mars is in Capricorn from February 16-March 30. Mars in Capricorn is deliberate, persistent energy. We consider the future and the consequences before taking action during this cycle. Our energy is reliable and faithful. We are slow to anger, but can be quite cold if we are frustrated. The shadow side of Mars in Capricorn is rigidity.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
In Taurus, Venus is usually quite content, but can be possessive. We seek security and value things that last.
This week: A Venus-Saturn square on Monday and Tuesday can be a checkpoint moment for our relationships. Temporarily, we may be fearing the worst and seeing the flaws. There can be some emotional distance or blockage, and ideally, it’s a time for reaching a new level of maturity and realism in your relationships. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Venus forms a sextile to retrograde Mercury and a semi-square to the Sun, and we may clarify feelings or discuss relationship matters, but we might feel somewhat uncomfortable as a result. Sweet talk, clarification of feelings, and making promises are themes.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aries Romance at the drop of a hat is part and parcel of the cycle you have just begun. Winning the hearts of others can be a challenge you’re eager to accept – and the thrill of the chase might be most of the fun. Is it the pursuit of happiness – or the happiness of pursuit?
Venus in Taurus A love of music, an appreciation for sensual pleasures and others of the finer things in life – such are the signs of the cycle which has begun for you. This is aesthetic and artistic to be sure, but it is also practical and materialistic: you develop a keen appreciation for the value of things, including the money it takes to buy them.
Venus square Pluto February 28. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.
Venus square Saturn March 2-3. Feeling unsatisfied, isolated, and unloved. Personal relationships are likely to be strained as we express our affections cautiously and sparingly. If we believe we are not getting what we want in love, we attract negative situations and challenges in our relationships. This is not a good time to begin a new relationship–new ones begun now are likely to be stamped with themes of duty and restriction.
Venus sextile Mercury March 3-4. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
Venus semi-square Sun March 4. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and avoid overindulging or procrastinating.
Venus semi-square Neptune March 7. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus conjunct Uranus March 7-8. We have a taste for the unusual and the avant garde. We are itching for a change. What makes a person unique is more attractive under this influence. Excitement and newness are valued over permanence in social relationships. Freedom is more important than intimacy just now. We lose our fears of taking risks in love and social situations. Romantic infatuations, gossip, unanticipated opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement.
Venus sextile North Node March 8-9. There is a stronger desire to connect to and belong with others at this time. We are more obliging and sociable.
Venus contra-parallel Saturn March 21-22. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most. Some pulling back can occur in relationships now, as we are more self-conscious and cautious with our affections.
Venus sextile Neptune March 22. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus semi-square Chiron March 23-24. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, March 1st, from 10:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Gemini at 2:21 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, March 3rd, from 9:20 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Cancer at 11:26 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, March 6th, from 2:13 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Leo at 4:29 AM EST.
March 2020:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from approximately 2:35 AM EST on Friday, February 28th, until Sunday, March 1st, at approximately 10:50 AM EST, while the Moon is in Taurus. Caveat: Mercury is retrograde during this window. This window is better after Venus squares Pluto, from 6 PM forward on the 28th. Another window occurs on Tuesday, March 3rd, from approximately 2:30 AM to 9:15 PM EST, while the Moon is in Gemini. This window is better after Venus squares Saturn at 11:45 AM. Another caveat: Mercury is retrograde and about to switch signs during this window.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Sun semi-square Saturn. It’s hard to satisfy the ego today. We feel blocked by circumstances or others. It’s too easy to feel discouraged, but discouragement is a time waster. Gratitude isn’t forthcoming right now, so it’s best to wait it out rather than waste energy letting it get to you.
Venus semi-square Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.
Mercury sextile Venus. It’s easy to make social connections under this influence. This transit favors diplomacy, charm, social graces, negotiations, presentation of ideas, romantic overtures, teaching, business deals, publishing, commerce, public relations, and joint ventures or partnerships. It is often a time when promises and clarifications are made in love relationships.
Venus semi-square Sun. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Mercury semi-square Mars. We are quick-witted and ready to argue under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions, as we feel pressure to get things done quickly. We are inclined to be snappy and irritable, and we may too easily interrupt others rather than listen. Conflicts of interest are likely.
Venus semi-square Neptune. Happiness is addictive under this influence. We tend to see what we want to see. Glossing over the more realistic points, details, and flaws of circumstances and of people provides us with instant gratification. However, it’s wise to hold off on making important purchases, or natalizing a relationship until the veil lifts. Take care with legal, financial, and social involvements, contracts, or formal agreements under this dreamy influence.

MARCH 1
The Taurus Moon continues until 2:21 PM EST and encourages us to enjoy ourselves and appreciate what we have going. There can be a slowing down and stabilizing of our feelings. Earthy activities and sensual pleasures appeal now more than usual, and we find a sense of peace and contentment with that which is familiar and reliable. The Moon transits Gemini from 2:21 PM forward. Misunderstandings can occur in the hour surrounding the Moon’s square to retrograde Mercury, as our feelings and words are a mismatch. Otherwise, the Gemini Moon is curious and light, encouraging us to diversify, put our feelers out, and pick up new ideas or tips. We’re more interactive and versatile.
The void Moon occurs from 10:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Gemini at 2:21 PM EST.
MARCH 2
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Gemini, and we crave mental stimulation and a variety of interests and things to do or learn. We’re especially responsive and sensitive to what’s going on around us, and we’re more adaptive than usual. The First Quarter Moon occurs this afternoon when the Sun in Pisces forms a square with the Moon in Gemini. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative that we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. It can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth.
MARCH 3
The Sun forms a semi-square to Saturn and Venus squares Saturn today, and we can be on guard or defensive with our affections. Fears are at the root of this. We could face challenges to self-expression. We may feel a little discouraged on a social level if we don’t receive the feedback we crave. Gaining what we want is challenging under this influence, possibly due to negative expectations or a tendency to need more than what is possible. Difficulties socializing can occur if we are a little more sensitive to rejection than usual. There may be a lesson or reality check when it comes to matters of the heart, or with finances. Responsibilities can weigh heavily on our minds. It’s best not to make major decisions with these transits, particularly with Mercury and Venus about to change signs. The Moon continues its transit of curious Gemini most of the day–until 11:26 PM EST when it enters Cancer.
The void Moon occurs from 9:20 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Cancer at 11:26 PM EST.
MARCH 4
Mercury, still retrograde, returns to the sign of Aquarius today. While Mercury will remain retrograde only until the 9th, it will transit Aquarius until the 16th. Retrograde Mercury periods tend to send us looking to the past for further or previously hidden information. This is a time for uniquely innovative ideas. Mercury forms a sextile to Venus today, just before Venus enters a new sign later today (Taurus). As it occurs in the last degrees of their respective signs, there may be too-quick judgments, statements, and decisions. Even so, it’s a good time to see an issue in a new light. Venus enters the sign of Taurus tonight, where it will transit until April 3rd. Venus in Taurus is a comfortable transit as Venus performs well in the sign. During this cycle, we seek security more than usual, and we place more value on those things that last. In fact, our judgment of value and worth is enhanced during this cycle. Our appetite for pleasure is robust. The Moon spends the day in protective Cancer.
MARCH 5
The Moon spends the day in Cancer. We seek out familiarity, safety, and quiet with the Cancer Moon. This transit encourages us to center ourselves and let go of overthinking. Home, family, and familiar settings or situations appeal more than usual now. We can feel some tension due to our drives to perform or the demands of our responsibilities. Events, people, and circumstances tend to pull us out of our comfort zone today with the Moon’s opposition to Jupiter and Pluto.
MARCH 6
The Moon continues its transit of Cancer only until 4:29 AM EST when it enters Leo. The Leo Moon is generous and trusting. We’re determined and confident, as well as direct and sincere under this influence. Mercury is heading toward a semi-square with Mars, and we can be quick to come up with ideas or retorts. We can be a little nervous and snappy under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions if we allow ourselves to succumb to the pressure to get things done quickly. We may too easily interrupt others rather than listen, and conflicts of interest are likely. Even so, this aspect can also supply us with the gumption to make changes.
The void Moon occurs from 2:13 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Leo at 4:29 AM EST.
MARCH 7
The Leo Moon is proud, decisive, and expressive. The Moon forms mostly quincunxes, however, suggesting some challenges integrating our emotional needs with our other drives or with people and circumstances around us today. We’re heading toward a Venus-Neptune semisquare, and this can reinforce a feeling of wanting something more than the ordinary. There is a tendency to gloss over problems or to see what we want to see, imagining the best or the worst when the truth is somewhere in between. We might have temporary doubts about our lovability and worth or about a relationship, pleasure, or comfort levels. Alternatively, we might go in the other direction and gloss over critical flaws and details.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Pisces The mystic, the martyr, the sinner, and the saint: these archetypes take on greater importance in your life at a time like this. Forgiveness, compassion, and understanding come naturally, when you look at life from an eternal perspective – and if anyone ever does know such things, you’ll probably come to understand them as this cycle unfolds. This can be a phase of sublime spiritual development, to be sure. But you should be aware of tendencies to believe too quickly, too deeply, or to become dependent on things or people that seem to offer quick and easy answers to life’s deepest yearnings.
Mercury in Pisces Knowing things without knowing how you know them is typical at a time like this. The mystical, the universal, the eternal: these are the things that stir your curiosity. Call it psychic, call it deja vu … it can be there when you call on it, whatever you call it. (Remembering the little things might become more difficult, however: it’s tough to remember if you paid the electric bill when you’re more interested in the eternal verities.)
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Capricorn With this new cycle taking hold in your life now, taking charge and being in control become more important issues for you. You want to get things organized, and you have the initiative to do it. This is a time of ambition and responsibility, a time to keep your cool and pace yourself. Working hard is smart, but working smart is better.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
