The NEW MOON/SOLAR ECLIPSE occurs on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at 2:41 AM EDT.
Early Sunday, a New Moon occurs early in the sign of Cancer (just after the solstice), and it is a Solar Eclipse.
This Solar Eclipse is the final eclipse in Cancer in a set of eclipses falling along the Cancer-Capricorn axis that started in July 2018. Still, there is one more eclipse forthcoming in this set–on July 5th, a Lunar Eclipse occurs in Capricorn.
This eclipse can be considered another cosmic nudge toward creating a better balance between responsibilities to the world and to our homes, or between our inner and outer worlds. The focus is on new beginnings related to our personal lives, need for nurture and to nurture, attention to family, living conditions and arrangments, and domestic experience.
In general, the New Moon in Cancer is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Crab. These include honoring our deepest, most irrational and intimate, feelings; recognizing the sense of security and safety we derive from whatever it is we call home; allowing ourselves to accept support and offering support to others; and starting a project aimed at improving our domestic lives or a major long-term venture. With this potent Cancer energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle.
Since this is a Solar Eclipse, we may feel wiped out, ignored, or overruled before we are motivated to make a big change or new beginning. Its tight quincunx to Saturn further emphasizes the theme of adjustments or discomfort that spurs us to want to improve our lives.
The effects of this lunation can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Moon-ruled sign of Cancer, domestic issues, family, personal popularity, the public, women’s interests, safety, security, food, support, our past/roots/heritage, and emotional issues are likely a strong focus. There can be the need for a new approach or new beginning with any of these matters.
We’re called upon to feed our foundation–all of that which we call “home,” including the foundation we have built inside of ourselves, needs to be tended to and honored. We are called upon to get in touch with our vulnerability and our needs for intimacy, as well as opening ourselves up to accepting support from others.
Some of Cancer’s lessons involve striving to feed our souls, to honor our innermost feelings, and to get in touch with our vulnerability and dependency on others. We are reminded of our support system and our need for a sense of safety and security. If we focus too much on achieving our career objectives at the expense of building a solid sense of personal satisfaction, we eventually become ineffective both personally and professionally. This is because our push for results on a professional level will not bring us long-term success if we don’t know what it is we need for ourselves on a personal level.
Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something so we can move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to surrender to the unknown rather than cling to things we no longer need.
An eclipse occurs close to the nodal axis, and this eclipse is closer to the North Node. Eclipses close to the North Node tend to feel easier than those in conjunction to or closer to the South Node, as there is a sense of moving forward instead of a focus on having to let go of something. Still, there is an element of the unknown involved that can worry some. Note that the last set of Cancer-Capricorn eclipses occurred from 2009-2011, and similar themes that occurred during that period, especially in 2011, may be in focus now.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Cancer in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse can feel its effects on a personal level. More about this Solar Eclipse.
It’s useful to know that eclipses occur along a sign axis in sets every nine years. Previous ones were 2009 to 2011, 2000 to 2002, and 1990 to 1992.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 0 degrees and 21 minutes of Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 25 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) and 0 to 5 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Cancer; Mercury is in Cancer; Venus is in Gemini; Mars is in Pisces until the 27th when it enters Aries.
The Sun is in Cancer from June 20-July 22. We are self-protective and insular under this influence. Our attention turns to our nest–our families, homes, and anything that makes us feel “at home”, safe, and secure. Nurturing and taking care of our loved ones and our pet projects comes into focus. Emotions run deep. We are more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon while the Sun is in Cancer.
Mercury is in Cancer from May 28-August 4. [This is longer than usual due to Mercury’s retrograde from June 18-July 12.] When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Venus is in Gemini from April 3-August 7. In Gemini, we have a finger in every pie. Curiosity motivates us on romantic and social levels. “Variety is the spice of life” is the attitude now. We are sociable, communicative, and interested. We can be animated and fun but may also keep our distance on an emotional level. Attractions now may begin with words, as we tend to bond more readily on a mental level with Venus in Gemini. The shadow side of Gemini is fickleness.
Mars is in Pisces from May 13-June 27. We tend to feel less motivated to go after traditional goals, and more motivated to pursue spiritual or emotional drives during this cycle. We dislike confrontation during this trend. Our output is variable rather than straightforward, and our energy is similarly up and down. We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. During this cycle, going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated!
Mars is in Aries from June 27, 2020, January 6, 2021. [This is longer than usual due to the retrograde of Mars from September 9-November 13, 2020.] Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
In 2020, Saturn divides its time between the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July, 1, 2020, and then later, from December 17, 2020, to March 7, 2023.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Gemini from April 3-August 7. In Gemini, Venus is communicative, sociable but emotionally aloof, insatiably curious, and a little bit flighty. Fickleness with our affections is a strong possibility, but the desire for a meeting of minds is strong and the urge to socialize dominates. Some detachment from our emotions is likely, which may be a breath of fresh air for some. The lines of communication open, although we may only scratch the surface of things. Under this influence, love is playful and lighthearted. Fickleness is the shadow side of Venus in Gemini.
This week: Venus is retrograde until the 25th when it turns direct. Venus doesn’t form any major aspects with the major bodies this week.
Venus turned retrograde on May 13th and continues in retrograde motion until June 25th,. Venus-ruled endeavors, such as money, beauty, art, romance, and pleasure, become a little heavier, more prone to reassessment, review, and perhaps delay or a period of limbo. This Venus retrograde cycle is a period in which we reevaluate or review our love life as well as the manner in which we receive, reveal, and express our affections. Thoughts turn to the past so that we can lay to rest unhealthy habits in these areas of life.
With Venus retrograde in Gemini, we may question how much daily involvement and both the quality and quantity of our communications in our relationships. Read more about Venus retrograde in Gemini from May 13-June 25, 2020.
This week, we come to the end of the Venus retrograde cycle. With the direct turn of Venus on the 25th, we begin to see some forward movement in projects or relationships that seem to have stalled. This doesn’t happen all at once–it’s more of a slow roll.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes naturally now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. (The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular.) A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Venus sextile Chiron June 10-11. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
Venus semi-sextile Mercury July 4-5. It may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.
Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter July 7. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, June 20th, from 5:48 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Cancer the next day, Sunday, June 21st, at 2:02 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 3:21 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:34 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, June 24th, from 1:35 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Thursday, June 25th, at 1:06 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, June 27th, from 4:02 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Libra at 4:17 PM EDT (a very short void period!).
June 2020:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon on the 21st, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details). The Moon is waxing this week after the New Moon on the 21st, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, also with exceptions.
According to principles of timing with the Moon, there are no clear windows of opportunity occurring this week. In addition, Venus is retrograde June 25th and Mercury is retrograde all week. The Solar Eclipse occurring on the 21st is another reason we may not be seeing things clearly. [The next window will occur next week from Tuesday, June 30th, at approximately 11:30 AM EDT, to Wednesday, July 1st, at approximately 9:20 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Scorpio.]

JUNE 21
Today’s New Moon occurs in the sign of Cancer and is a Solar Eclipse, bringing the chance for a fresh start. While it’s occurring close to the solstice and has “new beginning” energy, it’s the last New Moon in the series of eclipses that have been falling along the Cancer-Capricorn sign axis since 2018. Still, one more eclipse in that set is outstanding, happening on July 5th in the sign of Capricorn. With today’s eclipse, we’re called upon to pay attention to our instincts, our deepest needs, and our feelings. We need to recognize the importance of our family and/or personal circle and the security, sense of belonging, and safety that we derive from them. It’s a time for getting in touch with our vulnerabilities and our needs for intimacy. Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed, prompting us to redo or start afresh. Something ends for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something so that we can move forward into a new chapter. This eclipse can be considered another cosmic nudge toward creating a better balance between responsibilities to the world and our homes, or between our inner and outer worlds. The focus is on new beginnings related to our personal lives, need for nurture and to nurture, attention to family, living conditions and arrangments, and domestic experience. A Sun-Saturn quincunx today can point to a clash between a desire to enjoy ourselves and our responsibilities. Doubts or lack of faith can slow us down and hinder our movements and initiatives. Even so, this can be a helpful process as we take a break from pushing ahead. We might now see the need to adjust our plans based on new responsibilities or a reality check.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Cancer at 2:02 AM EDT.
JUNE 22
Neptune is reaching its yearly station as it turns retrograde and will remain retrograde for over five months (until November 28th). This station can seem to cast a veil over our affairs, and it can be challenging to see things clearly this week. Still, the retrograde cycle itself is a period of increased receptiveness, even if we’re putting some of our dreams on hold. It can be a time of indecision or feeling in limbo, but it can also be a period of personal discovery. We may feel let down by a matter now with the shift happening, but this can lead us along a new and improved path. We’re also interested in long-term security with the Moon spending the day in the sign of Cancer. The Cancer Moon encourages us to center ourselves and let go of overthinking. Home, family, and familiar settings or situations appeal more than usual now. We can feel some tension with drives to perform or the demands of our responsibilities later today as the Moon opposes Jupiter and Pluto.
JUNE 23
The Moon continues its transit of warm, caring Cancer until 8:34 AM EDT, after which the Moon enters Leo. The Leo Moon is generous and trusting. We’re determined and confident, as well as direct and sincere under this influence. Our emotional needs and personal life seem pitted against our responsibilities this morning with the Moon’s opposition to Saturn. We’re inclined to want to find a personal pursuit and give it special attention, but we can be frustrated by little things that go wrong or that pull us away from our interests. We might feel some tension as our drives to perform or the demands of our responsibilities serve as contrasts. As the day advances, the Leo Moon tends to bring us out of our shells. We seek more interactivity and feedback.
The void Moon occurs from 3:21 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:34 AM EDT.
JUNE 24
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Leo, and we’re especially inclined to play, share, act, express, and create. We’re seeking some feedback and interaction. We’re generally confident and prepared to take on whatever comes our way. Our feelings are strong, and we’re ready and willing to share ourselves with others. Early tomorrow, Venus turns direct after a retrograde period since May 13th, and with the shift occurring now, it’s better to take more care with critical decision-making. Our feelings can be in a state of flux. As well, the Moon is void most of the day, and is another indication that we should probably avoid beginning all-new projects.
The void Moon occurs from 1:35 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Thursday, June 25th, at 1:06 PM EDT.
JUNE 25
Venus turns direct early today after a retrograde phase since May 13th. Gradually over the next few weeks, matters ruled by Venus (including love and money) should move forward more straightforwardly. Our confidence in ourselves and the universe builds, and we express warmth and affection more comfortably, openly, and directly. Tact and diplomacy re-emerge, and more clarity is likely to come to our love and social relationships. While the shift occurs today, we can be confused or disoriented, however. It’s best to be patient and take our time processing our feelings. The Moon spends part of the day in affectionate Leo, and from 1:06 PM EDT forward, in thoughtful Virgo. As the day advances, it’s a good time to put in effort towards progressive causes and projects, and to bring new, unique, and exciting elements to our work. New techniques or options can emerge.
The Moon continues its void period until 1:06 PM EDT when the Moon enters Virgo.
JUNE 26
With the Sun semi-sextile Venus today, we may feel that our quest for pleasure, affection, love, or comfort is at odds with what we think we should be doing, which can lead to mild tension or feelings of guilt, and perhaps some indecision. Seeking to fulfill both of these needs without doing so at the expense of the other makes sense. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Virgo. While it’s heading toward a somewhat destabilizing opposition to Neptune, the Virgo Moon encourages us to take care of business, focus on details, and make improvements.
JUNE 27
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until 4:17 PM EDT, after which the Moon transits Libra. The Moon in Virgo is adaptable, helpful, and intelligent. Its opposition to Mars shortly before both the Moon and Mars change signs suggests some potentially too-hasty moves or decisions this afternoon, however. The Moon in Libra seeks balance and harmony. Mars enters Aries tonight and will stay in the sign for much longer than usual–until January 6, 2021–due to an upcoming retrograde phase (the retrograde will happen from September 9-November 13). Mars feels exceptionally comfortable in Aries, as it rules the sign. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. We instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is that it can sometimes be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered. However, Mars in Aries is authentic, trail-blazing, enthusiastic, and straightforward. Mars is heading toward a sextile to Saturn, exact early tomorrow, which helps us pace ourselves responsibly. It’s a practical influence that encourages us to get organized, orderly, and tidy. While this influence is a litlte dry, it’s also helpful for slowing us down enough to see our priorities.
The void Moon occurs from 4:02 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Libra at 4:17 PM EDT (a very short void period!).

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Cancer Being more in touch with your emotional roots is a keynote of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. This has to do with feelings, but it’s more than that: it’s about making the things you feel and care about a reality. At some levels, this means a greater focus on family life – parents, children, relatives, the whole domestic scene. On a somewhat broader scale, you’re likely to find that houses and other real property take on greater significance for you. Nurturing is where it’s at in your life now: making things grow and taking care of them, planting seeds that will develop and survive far into the future – that’s what it’s all about.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes naturally now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular. A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Mars in Pisces There’s a martyr complex in the air, now that this new phase has begun in your life. How can you (or anyone) save the world? It’s a question you’ll probably ask yourself as this cycle continues. Defending the weak, undoing injustice, and tilting at windmills can be a big temptation. You might even win a few hands – but you’ll blister a couple if you’re not careful.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
