The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, September 28th, 2021, at 9:57 PM EDT.
On Tuesday, the Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra squares the Moon in Cancer.
The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.
This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might now consider our revelations and their meaning.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 6 degrees and 9 minutes of Cancer square the Sun at 6 degrees and 9 minutes Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 4 to 8 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Libra; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Libra.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker.
However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Libra from August 30-November 5. [This is longer than usual due to Mercury’s retrograde, occuring entirely in the sign of Libra, from September 27-October 18.] When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.
Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Scorpio from September 10-October 7. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. It’s a highly emotional position for Venus, and it’s passionate energy.
Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises to feel alive and vital.
Similarly, during this Venus-in-Scorpio cycle, we seek or gravitate to absorbing, deeply engaging, dramatic pleasures, activities, projects, and art. Things that are profound, disturbing, mysterious, or unusual can be more appealing now.
This can be a good time for finances, especially when working with others’ talents or resources, whether as an agent, supporter, or partner.
Mars is in Libra from September 14-October 30. We tend to use our charm as a means to an end under the influence of this cycle. Because we can see many different sides to an issue, we can be vacillating and indecisive about how to act. We don’t want to be the “bad guy”, and rarely resort to force. Instead, we attempt to win arguments with style. We are indirect in approach and inclined towards engaging in mental debates, yet we also attempt to make the opposition comfortable! Passive-aggressiveness is the shadow side of this energy.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit. Jupiter is in Pisces from May 13th to July 28th, when it retreats into Aquarius. Jupiter returns to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. There will be another part to this 3-part act in 2022! Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Scorpio from September 10 to October 7. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is a passionate, sensual, and intense energy.
Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital. If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience. Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio.
We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed by and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we’re serious about our feelings, and we’re taking our relationships seriously, as well. Tuesday and Wednesday, we treat people we love with more tenderness or we see them in a more sensitive, obliging light. We’re particularly open to romance, and we can be quite sensitive to others’ needs and backstories. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions, taking the pressure off in personal relationships.
We may be going overboard on Thursday as we seek more meaning or new horizons. Watch for overcommitting or overstating. While there can be some missteps and minor communication issues on Friday, and Saturday,
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus opposition Uranus September 22-23. Not a good time to start relationships. Independence is the reigning need. Some fickleness. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness.
Venus parallel Saturn September 26-27. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most.
Venus trine Neptune September 28-29. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.
Venus square Jupiter September 30. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships. As well, take what your partner says with a grain of salt. There is no malicious intent involved, but feelings of elation can cloud our judgment, and we can promise more than we can deliver.
Venus semi-sextile Mercury October 1. It may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.
Venus sextile Pluto October 1-2. Subtly powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions.
Venus semi-square the Sun October 1-2. Irritations that seem to stem from others could be the reflection of our own inner uneasiness. Do your best to control yearnings for more and search for a creative solution for your inner dissatisfaction.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron October 2-3. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus semi-square Mars October 5-6. Tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging.
Venus parallel Pluto October 7. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.
Venus semi-square Mercury October 8-9. Communications between lovers are superficial and unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. Superficiality in romantic expression may exist now.
Venus opposition North Node October 9-10. This is a time for reviewing our attachments in terms of whether they are contributing to our growth.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Tuesday, September 28th, from 12:19 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 9:35 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, September 30th, from 10:49 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:54 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, October 2nd, from 7:43 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Sunday, October 3rd, at 4:38 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars sesquiquadrate Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly.
Venus trine Neptune. We are more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. Compassion, harmony, kindness, and openness characterize this transit. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. This can be a “magical” time on a romantic and social level. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. Romance is highly favored.
Sun trine Saturn. We feel grounded and stable. It’s easy to stick to a specific task and make headway. Productivity may be slow, but it’s steady. We have common sense at our disposal. We are willing to look reality in the eye and to take responsibility for our lives.
Sun sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We may feel vague restlessness and discontent with life as it is. We want more, but perhaps too much. Overestimation, wastefulness, and exaggeration. Elevated moods, but unstable ones, as they may not be based on reality.
Venus square Jupiter. Feelings of elation in love or with regards to the pleasures of life can lead us to overdo, overindulge, overspend, and overstate our feelings. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. We may also feel lazy and we are inclined to procrastinate.
Mars opposition Chiron. We are unlikely to be clear about how to go about getting what we want directly under this influence. We might feel rebellious when faced with others’ plans, but also unclear about our own direction. We may be defensive and touchy, and resentments or frustrations can surface now. Watch for self-righteous, superior, or rebellious attitudes when a gentler approach would work best.
Mercury square Pluto. The tendency to read between the lines with a negative slant is strong during this transit, and can easily stir up trouble. Suspiciousness, making mountains out of molehills, telling others only what we want them to know are possible themes. Mental anxiety or troubles could manifest now. We should try to avoid forcing our ideas on others and strive to maintain an open mind. Compulsive thinking is possible. On the other hand, this influence can suggest the ability to engage in deep, penetrating communication.
Venus sextile Pluto. If we seize the opportunity, this is a good time for both finances and relationships. The feelings are impassioned, but not in an offensive or unpleasant way. We are focused and confident, and we appreciate depth of feeling and authenticity in our dealings with others.
Sun semi-square Venus. Irritations that seem to stem from others could be the reflection of our own inner uneasiness. Do your best to control yearnings for more and search for a creative solution for your inner dissatisfaction.

SEPTEMBER 26
Early today, the Sun forms a trine to the True North Node of the Moon, encouraging us to aspire to our goals, rise to a challenge, and grow and improve. We’re making progress at emotional levels, and cooperation can bring rewards today. The Moon spends the day in communicative, curious Gemini. While the Gemini Moon can sometimes be a little scattered, the Moon’s harmony with Mars and Saturn helps us channel this energy, and we can be productive, perhaps putting an idea into motion. However, it’s best to consider that Mercury is coming to a station as it turns retrograde early tomorrow, and it’s a good idea to wait and see. What we say or plan now could require a revisit later.
SEPTEMBER 27
Mercury stations and turns retrograde early today. Mercury will be retrograde until October 18th and will spend the entire retrograde cycle in the sign of Libra. We should be aware that cloudy thinking or confusion can figure strongly during this shift. Communication can be tricky. However, we grow more accustomed to this energy as Mercury’s retrograde progresses in the three weeks ahead. During this period, we look back, tending to review and re-assess matters. Mercury rules our “lower” mind – how we perceive and interpret information from our environment and how we relay that information to others. Speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail, shipping, and so forth come under its rule. We approach these things differently, and we can be somewhat inattentive to the details we usually prioritize while focusing on those we don’t typically see. This period is best for reorganizing and reflecting. We look at the world a little differently–through different filters–and can come up with significant inner revelations. It may not be easy to communicate them under this influence, but we don’t need to rationalize everything. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, journal keeping, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication can reconnect us to other, possibly more meaningful means of communication. It’s a good time to get in touch with what nurtures us and feeds our spirits. This morning, a Mars-Jupiter minor square can excite our desire to do something new. It can produce some agitation and competitive feelings that can either distract us or spur us to improve. Enthusiasm and motivation can be incredible now if we know where to channel excess energy. Still, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do may lead to poor decisions or regrettable actions. We can also be rather argumentative and reactive with this combination. Possible misunderstandings and impulsiveness aside, we might find channels for expressing our need for change and progress in creative and unique ways. It’s easier than usual to solve problems or find our way around them as the day advances. The Moon spends the day in intelligent Gemini.
SEPTEMBER 28
The Moon continues its transit of Gemini until 9:35 AM EDT, after which it moves through the sign of Cancer, and we begin to favor comfort over satisfying our curiosity. While we start the day craving more interconnectivity, as the day advances, we seek familiarity. The Last Quarter Moon occurs tonight, prompting a turning point as we gain some perspective. We come to a place where we need to sort out what works for us and what doesn’t. It’s not the best time in the lunar cycle to start a significant project. During this Moon phase, suitable activities include paying debts, asking for money owed, giving or receiving rewards, making evaluations, taking inventory, and dealing with people and matters from the past.
The void Moon occurs from 12:19 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 9:35 AM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 29
The Moon spends the day in protective, traditional Cancer. Venus forms a trine to Neptune, and we tend to trust others first before judging, preferring to cooperate, not compete. We see the very best in people now, which takes the pressure off in personal relationships. We’re also inclined to glamorize objects, situations, and pleasures. It’s easier to tap into our inner spiritual wisdom and draw on compassion. We’re also more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. While we tend to prioritize spiritual and emotional concerns over material ones with this aspect, today’s Sun-Saturn trine has an opposite effect. Ideally, we enjoy the best of both worlds. Especially as the day advances, we more easily draw upon self-discipline. We can enjoy a real sense of strength and pride in our ability to meet our responsibilities. This transit supports moderation, and it helps us feel more grounded and stable. We are more aware of our limitations–and willing to accept them. Enjoyment of our duties, work, or obligations can be in focus. This trine occurs in Air signs, and we can feel particularly empowered communicating in practical, helpful ways.
SEPTEMBER 30
The Moon spends more time in Cancer today–until 8:54 PM EDT. The Cancer Moon is warm, encompassing, and protective. The Sun and Venus form challenging aspects to Jupiter, suggesting we want to grow and expand, but we could be shooting too high or far. The Sun’s minor square to Jupiter indicates a tendency to want more from our lives. Channeled well, this encourages us to make improvements, but otherwise can stir up restlessness and lead to over-indulgence, immoderation, or exaggeration. We should watch for overestimating our capabilities now since we may feel we can take on more than is reasonable. This evening’s Venus-Jupiter square can point to much enthusiasm and some extravagance. This transit can have the effect of exaggerating or expanding our affections, and this state of mind can lead to overdoing and overstating our feelings. However, if we keep this in check, it can be helpful for entertaining new ideas and approaches related to pleasure, money, and love. From 8:54 PM EDT forward, the Moon is in Leo. Creativity blossoms, and we take pride in our accomplishments. Satisfaction comes from positive feedback from others. The Leo Moon is devoted, affectionate, and generous.
The void Moon occurs from 10:49 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:54 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 1
Mars opposes Chiron this morning. This transit can complicate our lives if we can’t see how to pursue our interests and desires directly, straightforwardly. We can be defensive and touchy, and resentments or frustrations can surface now. Watch for self-righteous, superior, or rebellious attitudes when a gentler approach is preferable. Mercury, currently retrograde, forms a square to Pluto, and we can be telling others only what we want them to know. There is a tendency to worry and obsess, and there’s a backward focus to today’s thoughts and conversations. We should try to avoid forcing our ideas on others and strive to maintain an open mind. We can become obsessed with getting our message across and for others to agree with our thoughts. This aspect may play to our insecurities and fears that we’re not getting all the information we need. Mental anxiety or troubles could manifest now. Compulsive thinking is possible, but with mindfulness, we might engage in in-depth, penetrating communication or think more deeply about a matter. As the day advances, we head towards a Venus-Pluto sextile that helps us gain new insight into our relationships, money matters, and comfort or pleasure needs. Or, we take a comfortably strategic approach to these affairs. Our feelings are more focused and intensified in a generally pleasant and positive way. In fact, we seek depth of emotion and authenticity in our dealings. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Leo.
OCTOBER 2
A Venus-Pluto sextile early today gently breaks down barriers, helping us with new insight into our needs for love or pleasure and our money situation. This morning’s Sun-Venus semi-square, however, can pull up irritations. While they can seem to stem from others, they may very well reflect inner uneasiness. We can be especially hungry for others’ appreciation. What we want to do and think we should do can be at odds now, and we may not be very productive with this kind of discontent. Ideally, we look for creative solutions for dissatisfaction. With the Moon in Leo opposite Jupiter and square Venus, the tendency may be to go over the top. However, we’re in good shape for connecting with our affections and creative nature.
The void Moon occurs from 7:43 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Virgo tomorrow, Sunday, October 3rd, at 4:38 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Mars in Libra “I’m giving you a definite maybe” – that’s the motto of the cycle you’re now entering. It’s a time of refinement and tact, of an urge to please others that is so strong as to make it hard to decide or act for fear of offending someone. You’ll quickly learn to balance this out, or you’ll discover that there is no peace in compromise – and this can be tough on close relationships. The trick is to find the win-win solution to the no-win situation – and if anyone’s ever up to it, you are now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s much more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
