The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 8:14 PM EDT.
On Sunday evening, the First Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Moon in Capricorn.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 9 degrees and 47 minutes of Capricorn square the Sun at the same degree of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 8 to 12 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly. This chart wheel includes extra points like Chiron, the four major asteroids, Eris, and Sedna.

This week: The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Virgo; Venus is in Libra; Mars is in Gemini.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker.
However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Virgo from September 23-October 10. [For part of this transit (from September 23rd to October 2nd), Mercury is retrograde]. When Mercury is in Virgo, precision in speech, thought, and process are more important to us. This is a time when we analyze and decide what is useful and what we deem to be impractical.
Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules (Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo). Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in details, however.
While Mercury is in Virgo, we should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in a too factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.
We gravitate to useful information, and we can enjoy helping others with our knowledge. It’s a time for analyzing and dissecting, but we need other influences to put the pieces together or to see the bigger picture as our confidence in so doing is not strong at this time. It’s a time of conservative thinking and a strong tendency to want facts and certainties.
Venus is in Libra from September 29-October 23. We favor charm over assertiveness to get what we want during this cycle. Usually quite willing to negotiate and compromise, we can be very obliging with others. We’re also very idealistic about love, and we seek intellectual peers. Although Venus in Libra is very relationship-focused, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We prefer things are done the “right” way, and aggressive or uncouth behavior turns us off.
The shadow expression of this position includes over-dependence and superficiality. To avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to partners while privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so.
While Venus is in Libra, we are more artistically inclined or seek balance in our personal environment. This cycle is excellent for promoting cooperation, harmony, mutually beneficial connections, and fairness. We are gentle but firm, and we’re skilled at mediation.
We’re more likely to prosper during this cycle in partnership, through one-to-one associations, such as counseling, or in fields related to harmony, relationships, beauty, design, and the law. We’re not fond of out-and-out competition or aggressive pursuit, preferring win-win situations, hands down. We attract things to us and appeal to others gently and kindly. Equality and politeness are important now, and we despise hurting others’ feelings.
Mars is in Gemini from August 20, 2022-March 25, 2023. [This is much longer than usual due to a Mars retrograde cycle from October 30, 2022-January 12, 2023.]
In Gemini, Mars is versatile and flexible but not especially determined or focused. We should watch for becoming so scattered that we’re ineffective. However, it’s an excellent period for diversifying our interests and understanding the power of our communications.
It’s an excellent time for strategizing and devising useful tactics to achieve our desires and goals. We’re resourceful and clever, and we know how to use words effectively.
Perhaps most notable during this period is our tactical skills. We know how to maneuver things to get our way. We use words to charm and express anger. We’re very talkative, and animatedly so, when passionate and enthusiastic about a topic.
Jupiter is in Aries.
Jupiter is in Aries from May 10 to October 28, 2022. This is part one of two, with the second and final part occurring from December 20, 2022, to May 16, 2023. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Aries.
Jupiter will head back into Pisces from October 28 to December 20, 2022–the final part of three in the Jupiter-in-Pisces transit. Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Libra from September 29-October 23. Venus rules Libra and thus is dignified in the sign. Venus feels right “at home” in Libra, where she seeks to balance and harmonize. With Venus in Libra, we can easily be in love with love. We are more comfortable with a close partner with whom we can seek to have a balanced relationship. We favor employing charm over aggressive pursuit to get what we want.
Although Venus in Libra is very relationship-focused, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We are very obliging with others–quite willing to negotiate and compromise. We can be especially idealistic about love. We prefer things be done the “right” way, and are turned off by aggressive or uncouth behavior.
The shadow side of this position is dependency, inconsistency, and superficiality. In an attempt to avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to our partners but privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so!
This week: On Sunday, we can find several little things wrong with our relationships, or there can be some awkward energy in our interactions.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Libra As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty – these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.
Venus opposition Jupiter September 30-October 1. We are easily bored with the everyday responsibilities and routines of our love lives, and are now inclined to dramatize our lives. As a result, our love natures are strong, but insatiable. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone; or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.
Venus contraparallel Jupiter September 30-October 1. We’re optimistic and ready to take a chance or give someone or something the benefit of the doubt. We are able to make the best of a situation now. Watch for overextension. It’s best not to overstate or make big promises based only on the good mood of the moment.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus October 1. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness. A desire to experiment in the romance department may be fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying or frustrating.
Venus parallel Jupiter October 1-2. We are charitable with others and have a stronger desire than usual to find meaning in our relationships. There may be some overstating or overindulgence now, however.
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn October 2. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus parallel Neptune October 8-9. Heightened sensitivity to, and awareness of, beauty and spirituality. We are easily influenced, seducible and seductive, and given to strong powers of imagination. We are more attuned to the world of beauty and romance. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence as well. Psychic openness and compassion.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, October 1st, from 5:47 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, October 2nd, at 3:39 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Monday, October 3rd, from 11:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Tuesday, October 4th, at 6:21 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, October 5th, from 6:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Thursday, October 6th, at 8:48 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, October 8th, from 7:11 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mercury), until the Moon enters Aries at 11:57 AM EDT.
October 2022:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waxing this week. The waxing Moon is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week from Sunday, October 2nd, at approximately 9:15 PM EDT, until Monday, October 3rd, at approximately 11:45 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Capricorn.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.
Mercury trine Pluto. Our mental faculties are attuned to otherworldly impressions, offering us increased insight, psychological understanding and awareness, and focused attention.
Sun opposition Chiron. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong, but may be hampered by a lack of confidence or a fear of being different. We may not be seeing eye to eye with others, and lack of faith in our own decisions is likely as well. We might also be so concerned with keeping others happy that we are afraid to assert our own desires.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

OCTOBER 2
Mercury stations and turns direct today after retrograde motion since September 9th. We’ve been in a good position to reevaluate our routines and habits, and we’ve given more thought to the meaning of our work or services. Now, Mercury retraces its steps, completing its transit of Virgo on the 10th when it enters Libra once again. Information unclogs. Over the coming weeks, recent problems with communications and decision-making should improve. The answers we’ve been waiting for can arrive. And, plans or projects that have stalled might now resume. We can be flooded with energies that are hard to make sense of during the shift today, however, and it’s a better day to take in than to take action. It’s also a good idea not to rush conversations or share observations.
Venus forms a minor square with Saturn this morning, and there can be some anxiety or troubles with matters concerned with feelings and affections until we get in touch with our actual needs and wants.
The Moon heads into Capricorn early today, and the First Quarter Moon is exact tonight when the Capricorn Moon forms a square to the Sun in Libra. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Relationship and material goals tend to clash, causing some pressure or anxiety. It’s a time of stress, but it’s the kind of tension that motivates us to make changes.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Capricorn at 3:39 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 3
Today’s Capricorn Moon sensitizes us to our ambitions, goals, and sense of control. We enjoy making small changes that benefit our projects today. We’re goal-oriented, mindful, and careful. With this practical Moon position, we draw upon common sense when making decisions and pay more attention to structures, rules, and goals. The Moon harmonizes with Uranus, Neptune, and Mercury and aligns with Pluto, helping us find a balance between learning from tradition and seeing things progressively.
The void Moon occurs from 11:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Tuesday, October 4th, at 6:21 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 4
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn until 6:21 AM EDT, after which the Moon is in Aquarius. The Aquarius Moon harmonizes with Jupiter and Venus and heads toward a trine to the Sun, and we’re friendly and fair. We seek intellectual stimulation. Friends, community, groups, causes, and happiness goals are in stronger focus. We’re attracted to the unique, extraordinary, and uncommon. Just a splash of emotional detachment can be refreshing today. With a creative Mercury-Saturn aspect, we’re inclined to sort, categorize, and create order. We’re mentally disciplined.
The void Moon period continues today until the Moon enters Aquarius at 6:21 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 5
With today’s Sun-Uranus biquintile, we embrace our uniqueness, reinforced further by the Aquarius Moon. We more readily find channels for expressing our need for change and progress in creative and unique ways today. The Moon spends the day in Aquarius, and we’re able to express and embrace our independence while including others. We’re more intellectual and principled today, and we strive toward greater honesty and a broader viewpoint.
The void Moon occurs from 6:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Thursday, October 6th, at 8:48 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 6
The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius until 8:48 AM EDT when it moves into Pisces. Mercury forms a trine to Pluto tonight, and we’re likely to arrive at answers and solutions that eluded us in recent weeks. We might gain a mental advantage, increased insight, or psychological understanding and awareness. It’s natural to zero in on what matters most. We are drawn to looking for truths and to unexplored topics and ideas. Mercury formed this same aspect in August and then, while retrograde, in late September. We’ve been looking to the past for answers, and we might now arrive at valuable truths or insights. We gain a deeper understanding of a matter or finally “see” the reality of a matter we’ve been avoiding. It’s a good time to let go of something mentally that has kept us bound to negative elements of the past or to get to the bottom of a matter.
The void Moon continues today until the Moon enters Pisces at 8:48 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 7
The Sun opposes Chiron this morning, and we confront our insecurities and vulnerabilities through our relationships and interactions. Lack of faith in our own decisions is possible. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and others is strong but hampered by a lack of confidence or a fear of being different. We may not be seeing eye to eye with others. We might also be so concerned with keeping others happy that we are afraid to assert our desires. However, this is also a time to recognize something important about ourselves through our sensitivities and reactions. Today’s Pisces Moon is typically good energy for winding down. This Moon is compassionate and spiritual, encouraging an intuitive approach to the day. However, the Moon forms a square to Mars tonight, firing up our feelings and stirring us into action, although possibly also prompting some missteps. Rising ambitions, related primarily to learning, sharing, and connecting, can seem to interfere with the calm or zen we’re trying to achieve.
OCTOBER 8
The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until midday, when it enters Aries. We seek refreshment or an escape of sorts with the Pisces Moon. However, with the Aries Moon from 11:57 AM EDT forward, we’re ready for action. Pluto stations and turns direct today, and there can be inner rumblings as we sense something is coming. This happens after over five months of retrograde motion (Pluto turned retrograde on April 29th), and its station adds intensity to all we do and feel today and this week. Over the coming weeks, our power to make profound changes in our lives is more externalized, insistent, and direct. We are less likely to brood over changes that we feel have been thrust upon us and more likely to take things into our own hands and make necessary changes. For now, we can feel on the fence.
The void Moon occurs from 7:11 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mercury), until the Moon enters Aries at 11:57 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Virgo Mental discipline and patience are keynoted as you enter into a new cycle. Thinking things through, accounting for all the details, making careful measurements: these and similar experiences keep your mind active and involved. An interest in health and work may come to the fore.
Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You’re a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative … perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.
Jupiter in Aries Faith in yourself and your future is emphasized as you begin this new cycle. A feeling that anything is possible leads to new ventures, a clean break from the past. At its best, this is a very positive and optimistic new cycle in your life, but at times, overconfidence can border on foolhardy bravery. Don’t burn your bridges behind you!
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
