The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021, at 11:25 PM EDT.
On Tuesday night, the First Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Moon in Capricorn.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 20 degrees and 1 minute of Capricorn square the Sun at 20 degrees and 1 minute of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 18 to 22 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly. This chart wheel includes extra points like Chiron, the four major asteroids, Eris, and Sedna.

This week: The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Libra; Venus is in Sagittarius; Mars is in Libra.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker.
However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Libra from August 30-November 5. [This is longer than usual due to Mercury’s retrograde, occuring entirely in the sign of Libra, from September 27-October 18.] When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.
Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Sagittarius from October 7-November 5. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind.
Romantic adventures and a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are the priorities with Venus in Sagittarius.
We’re idealistic in our relationships during this cycle. It’s more critical than usual that our partners and companions support our dreams, goals, freedom needs, beliefs, and vision. We value intellectual rapport more than usual during this period.
Openness with our feelings can sometimes backfire, but for the most part, it can be refreshing. We tend to more spontaneously enjoy ourselves or throw ourselves into pleasure, art, cultural interests, and special interest topics at this time. We can especially enjoy travel, learning, the outdoors, or animals.
With money, we can be a little reckless or careless, but also faithful and optimistic. Some element of luck or good karma can be involved with our finances. Benefits, whether material or spiritual, can come through publishing, foreign or religious connections, travel, education, or legal matters.
Mars is in Libra from September 14-October 30. We tend to use our charm as a means to an end under the influence of this cycle. Because we can see many different sides to an issue, we can be vacillating and indecisive about how to act. We don’t want to be the “bad guy”, and rarely resort to force. Instead, we attempt to win arguments with style. We are indirect in approach and inclined towards engaging in mental debates, yet we also attempt to make the opposition comfortable! Passive-aggressiveness is the shadow side of this energy.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit. Jupiter is in Pisces from May 13th to July 28th, when it retreats into Aquarius. Jupiter returns to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. There will be another part to this 3-part act in 2022! Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Sagittarius from October 7 to November 5. As Venus moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of the Venus-in-Scorpio phase. Truth and higher meaning are focal points for Sagittarius.
Venus in Sagittarius is forward-looking, not very specific, outgoing, and energetic. Freedom is most important in our love relationships now. We take a happy and enthusiastic approach to love, and we might find too much intensity or seriousness depressing. We have a taste for the exotic as well as for adventure with Venus in Sagittarius.
This position’s shadow side is restlessness, the inability to “settle down,” and endless searching for something bigger and “better.”
This week: On Sunday, Venus aligns with the South Node, and we may be questioning whether some relationships (or elements of our relationships) are good for us. We may be a little indulgent with one another now.
On Wednesday, relationships stabilize and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. Realism and reasonable expectations boost our confidence. We are more obliging, respectful, and sociable.
Fears and insecurities are closer to the surface on Friday, which can be disruptive in our relationships, but with self-awareness, can be revealing. We can be suspicious or fearful of betrayal.
Saturday’s energies are for more free-flowing. We’re inclined to talk things through and compromise. We believe that clarifications are the key to better compatibility. It’s easy to connect with and embrace our feelings and romantic needs–we’re ready to open up and be more vulnerable.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Venus parallel Pluto October 7. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.
Venus semi-square Mercury October 8-9. Communications between lovers are superficial and unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. Superficiality in romantic expression may exist now.
Venus opposition North Node October 9-10. This is a time for reviewing our attachments in terms of whether they are contributing to our growth.
Venus sextile Saturn October 13. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus semi-square Pluto October 15. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus sextile Mercury October 16. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
Venus trine Chiron October 16. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings.
Venus quincunx (inconjunct) Uranus October 19. Impulsive spending, peculiar attractions, fear of commitment, freedom vs. intimacy issues. We might question whether we need more excitement in our relationships, or whether we need freedom from them; yet we don’t feel confident enough to rock the boat.
Venus square Neptune October 26. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit–a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The “highs” of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying “lows” are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, October 11th, from 12:30 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:15 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, October 13th, from 6:53 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 4:48 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, October 15th, from 8:33 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 10:22 PM EDT.
October 2021:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider besides the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying).
The Moon is waxing this week, which is usually considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a short window of opportunity occurs this week from Sunday, October 10th, at approximately 11:20 PM EDT to Monday, October 11th, at approximately 12:25 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Sagittarius. Another window occurs on Wednesday, October 13th, from approximately 12:30 AM to 6:50 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Capricorn.
A better window occurs from Thursday, October 14th, at approximately 5:55 PM EDT, to Friday, October 15th, at approximately 8:30 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Aquarius. This one is better before the Sun and Jupiter perfect their trine–in other words, until 7:45 AM on October 15th.
Another window occurs from Saturday, October 16th, from approximately 6:00 PM EDT, until Sunday, October 17th, at approximately 7:20 PM, while the Moon is in Pisces.
Caveats: note that Mercury is retrograde during these windows. Mercury’s direct station occurs on October 18th.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury quincunx Uranus. It is difficult to get a point across without rubbing people the wrong way or misrepresenting ourselves. Uncertainty reigns today. Avoid making hasty decisions that you will later regret. Impulsiveness, disorganization, unreceptive to practical advice and/or your ideas are not well-received.
Venus sextile Saturn. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. Small advances can be made in business and in partnerships. Support from older people or authority figures may come by way of solid advice or tangible help. Renewed ties to old friends are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing friendships.
Sun quincunx Neptune. It can be difficult to concentrate and to formulate clear goals just now. Misconceptions abound. Fear of being ineffective can undermine our confidence when it comes to making clear or definite decisions, and for doing new things.
Sun trine Jupiter. This influence is about growth and expansiveness. We are more aware of moral issues, and have a desire to improve and learn. Optimism and confidence are basic elements in the energy of this transit. We are more willing to take a risk or two, and we are motivated by a desire to impress others. Enthusiasm runs high, and cooperation comes easy. This is generally a good time to schedule new beginnings in business, education, personal relationships, marriage, creative projects, and so forth, all things equal.
Venus semi-square Pluto. This influence can point to some underlying tensions in social interactions (looking for an ulterior motive or an agenda, suspiciousness) and relationships (possible jealousies). Passions run high and hot, but there’s a hidden agenda. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies. Sometimes, this transit correlates with unreciprocated feelings in love or romantic disappointment. Often, financial matters come to the fore. Manipulation can color relationships now. Avoid power plays with friends and lovers.
Venus trine Chiron. We have the chance to heal our personal relationships now, as we are more open to intimacy and commitment, as well as learning from one another. We more easily see beauty in human weaknesses, and are less inclined to see fault, or to concern ourselves with fault. It’s a strong time for building trust in relationships, and for seeing potential in one another.
Mars quincunx Neptune. We can feel vaguely discontented and without direction under this influence. The tendency to be careless is also strong now. Poor judgment or laziness can prevent us from realizing our plans.
Mercury sextile Venus. It’s easy to make social connections under this influence. This transit favors diplomacy, charm, social graces, negotiations, presentation of ideas, romantic overtures, teaching, business deals, publishing, commerce, public relations, and joint ventures or partnerships. It is often a time when promises and clarifications are made in love relationships.

OCTOBER 10
The Moon spends the day in forward-looking Sagittarius. It harmonizes with Mercury, Mars, and the Sun, all still close to one another in the sign of Libra. We’re more idealistic than usual, perhaps expecting a lot from our lives. We’re especially interested in what’s true, just, and fair today. Saturn’s station and direct turn, however, occurs now after its retrograde motion since May 23rd. This change in direction reminds us to take care of our obligations and bring our goals down to earth. With Saturn’s direct turn, our responsibilities, and perhaps our limitations, tend to magnify. Gradually, our long-term goals and plans become clearer. We become more aware of rules, limits, and boundaries in our lives.
OCTOBER 11
The Moon continues its transit of spirited Sagittarius until 1:15 PM, after which it’s in Capricorn. The Capricorn Moon inspires a more orderly, practical approach to our day. However, Mercury is heading into a quincunx with Uranus. This transit can complicate our interactions as the day advances. It can be challenging to get a point across clearly or even kindly. We should watch for poorly-considered decisions, impulsive communications, and disorganization leading to misunderstandings.
The void Moon occurs from 12:30 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:15 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 12
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn all day, and the First Quarter Moon is exact tonight when the Capricorn Moon forms a square to the Sun in Libra. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. It’s a time of stress, but it’s the kind of tension that motivates us to make changes. Relationship and material goals tend to clash, causing some pressure or anxiety. Even so, transits today help us find a balance between learning from tradition and seeing things progressively.
OCTOBER 13
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn until 4:48 PM EDT, aligning with Pluto this morning and increasing our ambition. The Capricorn Moon is goal-oriented, mindful, and careful. A Venus-Saturn sextile this afternoon reinforces a considered, practical approach, particularly in our social lives. It’s a grounding influence that helps stabilize our affections. We place a higher value on security, steadiness, and loyalty. This transit boosts the appeal of the ordinary and reliable–we appreciate longstanding alliances or tried-and-true pleasures. We are more responsible with others and with our own feelings and affections. Our judgment is sound, and we’re a little more conservative with money under this influence. We can enjoy planning and organizing. From 4:48 PM, the Aquarius Moon is friendly and fair. We tend to seek intellectual stimulation and unusual or unconventional experiences. We’re attracted to the unique, extraordinary, and uncommon. A bit of emotional detachment can be refreshing now. Tonight’s Sun-Neptune quincunx adds a layer of uncertainty to our day. We might feel that people are draining our energy, especially if what they want from us is unclear. We can be feeling slightly off or out of sorts, and there can be difficulties concentrating or figuring out our next step. These things are more likely if we’ve neglected our spiritual needs, and it makes sense to slow down and adjust. Incorporating and recognizing the need for more imagination in our lives seems necessary now.
The void Moon occurs from 6:53 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 4:48 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 14
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Aquarius. Independence, equality, and freedom are vital to feeling emotionally satisfied with this Moon transit. We take more interest in our social life and novel ideas, particularly with the Moon’s harmony with Venus and Mercury. Conversations stand out, and shared interests are a likely topic. The Aquarius Moon is earnest and principled. With Mercury and Neptune parallel, subjective impressions can be strong. Fortunately, we more easily access imagination and intuition. The Sun and Jupiter are heading to a trine, exact tomorrow morning, and we’re gracious — quick to give one another the benefit of the doubt. Enthusiasm runs high, and cooperation comes easily.
OCTOBER 15
The Sun forms a trine to Jupiter this morning, and the Aquarius Moon hooks into this energy through its alignment to Jupiter and trine to the Sun. These transits feel buoyant, stimulating hope and a desire to improve, impress, and do good. We’re inclusive and concerned with what’s best for all. It’s a great time to gain allies. We seek to grow and expand a venture, a relationship, our knowledge, personal philosophy, or a self-improvement program. We might make grand gestures now, and we more readily rise above petty problems and differences. Optimism and confidence are core elements in the energy of the Sun-Jupiter transit. The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius much of the day: until 10:22 PM EDT when it enters Pisces. While the Pisces Moon tonight encourages letting go, a Venus-Pluto semi-square can temporarily wind us up. Matters concerned with our affections tend to trouble us. It can be all too tempting to manipulate or control others and situations, leading to unnecessary troubles. Jealousy or possessiveness can emerge.
The void Moon occurs from 8:33 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 10:22 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 16
Venus harmonizes with Chiron and retrograde Mercury today. There are two days left in the Mercury retrograde cycle, and the Mercury-Venus sextile helps ease this sometimes rocky transition. Today, we may get an opportunity to heal our relationships through openness to learning from one another. We more readily see the beauty in human imperfection. It’s a vital time for building trust in relationships and seeing potential in one another. We recognize the value of the people, relationships, and pleasures in our lives more clearly. We can benefit from interacting with others in fresh ways, with more authenticity and sincerity. Retrograde Mercury periods tend to send us looking to the past for further or previously hidden information. It’s a good time to see an issue in a new light. We feel the most challenging side of Mercury retrograde around the time it changes direction, which happens on the 18th, so we might want to avoid complicated decision-making for the time being. There may be too much happening now to think clearly. However, today’s Mercury-Venus sextile stimulates a desire to cooperate, compliment, encourage, and express our affections. We’re also inclined to analyze our relationships, particularly past ones, as well as our preferences and feelings. Connecting with people from our past is also possible. A Mars-Neptune quincunx transit is also active now, and we can feel a little stuck — uncertain what we truly want and where to head — until we get in touch with the spiritual or emotional needs we may have been overlooking. The Moon spends the day in Pisces.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Mars in Libra “I’m giving you a definite maybe” – that’s the motto of the cycle you’re now entering. It’s a time of refinement and tact, of an urge to please others that is so strong as to make it hard to decide or act for fear of offending someone. You’ll quickly learn to balance this out, or you’ll discover that there is no peace in compromise – and this can be tough on close relationships. The trick is to find the win-win solution to the no-win situation – and if anyone’s ever up to it, you are now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s much more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
