The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Friday, May 29, 2020, at 11:30 PM EDT.
Friday night, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Gemini forms a square with the Virgo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 9 degrees and 12 minutes of Virgo, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 7 to 11 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Gemini; Mercury is in Gemini until the 28th, when Mercury transits Cancer; Venus is in Gemini; Mars is in Pisces.
The Sun is in Gemini from May 20-June 20. Knowledge and diversity motivate us with the Sun in Gemini. We are more sociable, intellectual, and insatiably curious under this influence. We tend to scatter our energies as a result of this curiosity and awareness of all of our options. We are more communicative and versatile, but we can also be unreliable.
Mercury is in Gemini from May 11-28. When Mercury is in Gemini, we are especially communicative, curious, and sociable. Mercury feels right at home in Gemini, one of the signs that it rules. We tend to take more pleasure in gaining a superficial knowledge of many subjects rather than dig deep into any one topic. We are especially astute when it comes to arguing or making a point. We are attracted to wordplays, puns, and negotiations. We are easily distracted.
Mercury is in Cancer from May 28-August 4. [This is longer than usual due to Mercury’s retrograde from June 18-July 12.] When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Venus is in Gemini from April 3-August 7. In Gemini, we have a finger in every pie. Curiosity motivates us on romantic and social levels. “Variety is the spice of life” is the attitude now. We are sociable, communicative, and interested. We can be animated and fun but may also keep our distance on an emotional level. Attractions now may begin with words, as we tend to bond more readily on a mental level with Venus in Gemini. The shadow side of Gemini is fickleness.
Mars is in Pisces from May 13-June 27. We tend to feel less motivated to go after traditional goals, and more motivated to pursue spiritual or emotional drives during this cycle. We dislike confrontation during this trend. Our output is variable rather than straightforward, and our energy is similarly up and down. We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. During this cycle, going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated!
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
In 2020, Saturn divides its time between the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July, 1, 2020, and then later, from December 17, 2020, to March 7, 2023.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Gemini from April 3-August 7. In Gemini, Venus is communicative, sociable but emotionally aloof, insatiably curious, and a little bit flighty. Fickleness with our affections is a strong possibility, but the desire for a meeting of minds is strong and the urge to socialize dominates. Some detachment from our emotions is likely, which may be a breath of fresh air for some. The lines of communication open, although we may only scratch the surface of things. Under this influence, love is playful and lighthearted. Fickleness is the shadow side of Venus in Gemini.
This week: Venus turned retrograde on May 13th, and things are changing. Venus-ruled endeavors, such as money, beauty, art, romance, and pleasure, become a little heavier, more prone to reassessment, review, and perhaps delay or a period of limbo. This Venus retrograde cycle lasts until June 25th, and is a period in which we reevaluate or review our love life as well as the manner in which we receive, reveal, and express our affections. Thoughts turn to the past so that we can lay to rest unhealthy habits in these areas of life. This week, while we’re ready to talk about or explore our feelings on Sunday, we may not be ready to understand a situation. On Thursday and Friday, we can be self-protective regarding our affections, and perhaps somewhat distant or unyielding in our relationships.
With Venus retrograde in Gemini, we may question how much daily involvement and both the quality and quantity of our communications in our relationships. Read more about Venus retrograde in Gemini from May 13-June 25, 2020.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes naturally now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. (The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular.) A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Venus square Neptune May 3 and then May 20. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit–a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The “highs” of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying “lows” are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment.
Venus conjunct Mercury May 21-22. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
Venus parallel Mercury May 23-24. A congenial time when we appreciate diplomacy and socialize more readily.
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn May 28-29. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus square Mars June 2. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus conjunct Sun June 2-3. Good relating is the focus, although some may find this energy superficial in that surface charm, diplomacy, and harmony is the goal. The pursuit of pleasure is emphasized.
Venus parallel Sun June 3-4. A strong desire for harmony and comfort fill us now. We may be moved to express our affections.
Venus contra-parallel Pluto June 5-6. Romantic intensity, a feeling of fatedness, possessiveness, fear of betrayal, and insecurity in relationships. Questions of trust can emerge in relationships. Looking for a commitment.
Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter June 6-7. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus contra-parallel Jupiter June 8-9. We’re optimistic and ready to take a chance or give someone or something the benefit of the doubt. We are able to make the best of a situation now. Watch for overextension. It’s best not to overstate or make big promises based only on the good mood of the moment.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto June 10. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus sextile Chiron June 10-11. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, May 24th, from 7:10 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 7:09 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, May 26th, from 9:06 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Leo the next day, Wednesday, May 27th, at 2:33 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, May 28th, from 9:30 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Friday, May 29th, at 7:40 AM EDT.
May 2020:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Wednesday, May 27th, at approximately 6:35 PM EDT, until Thursday, May 28th at approximately 9:25 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Leo. Another window occurs from Saturday, May 30th, at approximately 8:15 PM EDT, until Sunday, May 31st, at approximately 5:15 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Virgo. The next window will start on June 3rd. Caveats: Venus is retrograde during these windows (Venus is retrograde until June 25th). Also, a Lunar Eclipse will occur on June 5th, and it is generally considered challenging for new beginnings in the week before an eclipse.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury quincunx Pluto. Something we write or say could trigger power struggles or hostility from others. We may be plagued with self-doubt in our attempts to make decisions. Decisions made now are unlikely to be objective. Re-assessing decisions we have made already, or adjusting our plans, may be in order. Second-guessing.
Mars sextile Uranus. This is a period in which we are more willing than usual to take risks and to make necessary changes in our lives. We are naturally bold and assertive, willing to experiment, and conscious of a need to act independently. Our ideas may be ground-breaking, and at the very least progressive. A strong desire to make things happen is with us now.
Mercury quincunx (inconjunct) Jupiter. We may have big ideas under this influence, but we may also overestimate our abilities or underestimate the situation. Avoid jumping into something without planning ahead, as important details are too easy to overlook. Also, avoid making promises you may not be able to fulfill, and read the fine print!
Mars semi-square Pluto. Our desires are intense and difficult to satisfy under this influence. A tendency to bully and confront may dominate. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted, or power struggles emerge. The trick is to remain flexible and to develop strategies for achieving our goals.
Sun sextile Chiron. An opportunity to find a sense of purpose or a “mission” arises now, increasing our confidence. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong. Problem solving is favored.
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.
Mercury quincunx Saturn. Communication challenges today make it hard to get a point across. Delays, “red tape”, and vague feelings of forgetting important details.
Sun sesquiquadrate Pluto. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is strong during this influence. Meeting with obstacles in our paths, however, can force us into the position of using all of our resources to fight back, and we can discover resources we never knew we had in the process.
Mars semi-square Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly.

MAY 24
Mars aligns with Ceres and heads toward a sextile with Uranus, exact early tomorrow but influencing today. Today and tomorrow are strong for discovering new and possibly improved ways of relating, nurturing, and healing. Allowing our loved ones more freedom to be themselves can be in focus. We might enjoy a stronger sense of independence and encouragement, or these things serve as powerful motivators. Today, we want to experiment and make things happen, and we can be very creative about it. There’s a greater willingness to take risks and make necessary changes in our lives. We are naturally bold and assertive, willing to take a chance, and conscious of a need to act independently or spontaneously, answering to our instincts. It’s easy and natural to break through obstacles, to find alternative methods of going after what we want, and to take progressive action or to take the lead. More courage, confidence, and energy are available to us. We embrace change, progress, and new methods. This is also a time when we more readily support or defend others. The Moon continues its transit of Gemini until 7:09 PM EDT, aligning with Mercury this morning, drawing out the chatty side of our personalities. The Moon enters Cancer at 7:09 PM, and our instincts to nest strengthen.
The void Moon occurs from 7:10 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 7:09 PM EDT.
MAY 25
The Moon spends the day in nourishing, receptive Cancer. We seek out familiarity, safety, and quiet with the Cancer Moon. We can be quite nostalgic, rooted, and domestic. We readily turn tensions into winning situations now as the Moon harmonizes with Mars. It’s a good time for activities that engage our emotions. Mercury heads into alignment with Vesta, and we can enjoy dedicating ourselves to a special interest or project.
MAY 26
Mercury forms a quincunx to Jupiter today, and we might waver, unable to reach a wholly satisfying decision or conclusion. We may overestimate our abilities or underestimate the situation. It may be best to avoid jumping into something without planning, as necessary details are too easy to overlook at the moment. We can be see-sawing between alternatives. Still, with a Sun-Juno trine, we’re in good shape for strengthening and supporting one another, and for building trust in the process. We take greater pride in our relationships or projects, and we’re willing to put more effort into them. The Moon opposes Pluto and then Jupiter, and we can feel some tension due to our drives to perform or the demands of our responsibilities. Otherwise, the Moon is in Cancer all day, encouraging us to check in with our hearts, homes, or families.
The void Moon occurs from 9:06 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Leo tomorrow, Wednesday, May 27th, at 2:33 AM EDT.
MAY 27
The Moon continues its transit of Cancer only until 2:33 AM EDT, after which it transits creative, affectionate Leo. There can be tensions if we feel powerless or overshadowed as Mars and Pluto form a semi-square aspect this morning. We could find it challenging to express ourselves in healthy, direct ways. Our desires can be both intense and difficult to satisfy. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted, or power struggles emerge. This is not an ideal time for straightforward interactions. As the day advances, with a pending Mercury-Node alignment, learning, teaching, and communicating figure strongly. Valuable contacts can be made with people who share our intellectual interests or who introduce us to new ideas that help us to grow, improve, and expand.
The void Moon period continues until 2:33 AM EDT today when the Moon enters Leo.
MAY 28
Mercury enters Cancer today and will spend a longer time than usual in the sign–until August 4th. The extended stay is due to an upcoming retrograde cycle from June 18th to July 12th. When Mercury is in Cancer, we seek quality over quantity with information. We think, speak, and take in information on a deep, intuitive level now. Our emotions color our thoughts more than usual. We communicate with more sensitivity, meaning, and care, and our memory is retentive during this cycle. The Moon spends the day in Leo–a devoted, affectionate, and generous energy. The Moon’s sextile to Venus this morning suggests a spirit of cooperation and harmony.
The void Moon occurs from 9:30 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Virgo tomorrow, Friday, May 29th, at 7:40 AM EDT.
MAY 29
The Moon leaves Leo and enters particular, discriminating, and detail-oriented Virgo at 7:40 AM EDT. With both Mercury and Venus in minor challenging aspect to Saturn today, we may be keeping our emotional distance as we can be self-protective. The negative possibilities seem more prominent than usual, which does help us see the flaws that need fixing, but it can also skew our judgment. There can be feelings of blockage or restriction. The Sun’s sextile to Chiron, however, is more generous. It can help produce an opportunity to find a sense of purpose or a “mission,” increasing our confidence, possibly through our communications, business, or projects. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and people in our lives is strong and healthy now. Problem-solving is favored. We can feel a little more robust and empowered. Tonight, the First Quarter Moon occurs with the Gemini Sun’s square to the Virgo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative that we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
The void Moon continues today until 7:40 AM EDT when the Moon enters Virgo.
MAY 30
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Virgo, and we crave some semblance of order. The Sun is sesqui-square Pluto today, and this transit can stimulate or aggravate fears and any feelings we may have of being powerless or overlooked. Buried emotions and motives can surface now. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is persistent with this aspect. However, it’s best to rise above this. Also today, Mars forms a semi-square with Jupiter. Competitive feelings experienced can be stimulating and invigorating, but we may not get the timing or estimation of our capabilities right. It’s best to wait out sudden urges, since they may not hold weight over time.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Gemini The cycle which begins for you now will be marked by a more intense focus on mental and communicative activity than you may ever have experienced before. It’s a time of more involvement with other people, a time for gathering information, and a time when you’re apt to be more on the go than ever. There is likely to be an emphasis on reading, writing, studying, and all forms of exchanging information with others in the years ahead – and it will all serve as a path for self-discovery and personal development.
Mercury in Gemini A walking encyclopedia, a yen to know a little bit about everything (and everyone): these are the icons of the cycle you have just begun. Talking, writing, keeping a finger on the pulse of all that’s happening … this is a time of study and learning, a cycle of mental challenge, curiosity, and social/intellectual growth. Such things are an end in themselves rather than a means to any other end.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes naturally now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular. A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Mars in Pisces There’s a martyr complex in the air, now that this new phase has begun in your life. How can you (or anyone) save the world? It’s a question you’ll probably ask yourself as this cycle continues. Defending the weak, undoing injustice, and tilting at windmills can be a big temptation. You might even win a few hands – but you’ll blister a couple if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
