The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, July 31st, 2021, at 9:16 AM EDT.
On Saturday, the Last Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Leo forms a square with the Moon in Taurus. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t. This is in preparation for next week’s New Moon when something new is born once again.
It’s not an ideal time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might consider recent revelations, what they mean to us, and what we might do about them.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 8 degrees and 33 minutes of Taurus, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 7 to 11 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Leo; Mercury is in Cancer until the 27th when Mercury enters Leo; Venus is in Virgo; Mars is in Leo to the 29th, after which Mars is in Virgo.
The Sun is in Leo from July 22 to August 22. In Leo, the Sun is proud, outgoing, and playful. The Leo Sun is intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. It’s time to shine, add a touch of color and drama to our lives, and perform. Like the flowers and fruit of the season–blossoming and ripened–this is a time when we want to enjoy ourselves and express ourselves. We are more generous and grand in our gestures and attitudes. On the shadow side, we can also be self-centered and vain.
Mercury is in Cancer from July 11-27. When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Mercury is in Leo from July 27-August 11. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the more grand a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Venus is in Virgo from July 21-August 16. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Mars is in Leo from June 11-July 29. In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have lofty goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.
Mars is in Virgo from July 29-September 14. In Virgo, Mars is somewhat of a workhorse. We have a passion for details, as well as a need to do the right thing at just the right time under this influence. The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now. We are more precise and concerned about performance.
Jupiter re-enters Aquarius this week. Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit. Jupiter is in Pisces from May 13th to July 28th, when it retreats into Aquarius. Jupiter returns to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. There will be another part to this 3-part act in 2022! Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from July 21 to August 16. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love.
Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues.
As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
This week: On Friday, we’re more aware of the flaws, even if we can’t pinpoint all of them. It’s a nitpicky time for relationships, but it’s likely temporary.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus opposition Jupiter July 21-22. We are easily bored with the everyday responsibilities and routines of our love lives, and are now inclined to dramatize our lives. As a result, our love natures are strong, but insatiable. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone; or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto July 30. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus quincunx Saturn July 30. A feeling that we may not be able to express our affections, or that our affections will not be received well, can undermine us in our relationships. Fear of rejection, emotional distancing, and over-sensitivity.
Venus quincunx Chiron August 1. There may be vague feelings of discontent in relationships; or a choice that needs to be made regarding personal relationships, money, or possessions. Insecurity involving others might make it awkward for us to express our affections naturally or flowingly.
Venus parallel Chiron August 2. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus trine Uranus August 2-3. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus opposition Neptune August 9. Not a good time to start a new relationship, which could be characterized by disappointments, and the tendency to feel emotionally (and sometimes financially) drained by the partner. Uncertainties about existing love.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, July 25th, from 7:14 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:30 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, July 27th, from 9:13 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Wednesday, July 28th, at 5:58 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, July 30th, from 3:38 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Taurus at 4:08 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week, which is usually considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week from Monday, July 26th, at approximately 10:10 AM EDT, until Tuesday, July 27th, at approximately 9:10 PM EDT while the Moon is in Pisces. Another window occurs on Friday, July 30th, from approximately 7:45 AM to 3:35 PM EDT while the Moon is in Aries. The next window will occur on August 4th.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury opposition Pluto. This energy produces either a compulsive need to talk or a desire to withhold information. Obsessive thinking, attempts to persuade others to think like we do, insisting on knowing the “truth” or on exposing falsehoods, making mountains out of molehills–these are all possibilities now. This aspect can also represent mental anxiety or concern. On the other hand, it can suggest the ability to engage in deep, penetrating communication.
Mars sesquiquadrature Chiron. We can be easily offended under the influence of this transit. Touchiness. Difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner.
Mercury quincunx (inconjunct) Jupiter. We may have big ideas under this influence, but we may also overestimate our abilities or underestimate the situation. Avoid jumping into something without planning ahead, as important details are too easy to overlook. Also, avoid making promises you may not be able to fulfill, and read the fine print!
Mars opposition Jupiter. Over-estimating what we are capable of doing characterizes this transit. What we want to do may conflict with what is actually possible. We may get fired up over opposing viewpoints, and we may need to adjust our plan of action. Errors in judgment made now are likely due to impulsiveness and the overlooking of crucial details.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto. This influence can point to some underlying tensions in social interactions (looking for an ulterior motive and suspiciousness) and relationships (possible jealousies). Passions run hot, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness can be brewing just under the surface of things, and they are in direct proportion to our fear of losing something or someone dear to us. Avoid power plays with friends and lovers.
Venus quincunx Saturn. We are extra sensitive, but it can be difficult to know why. Anxiety may overcome us when we wish to express our affections or social urges, and this hesitation can express itself through inhibitions and emotional distancing.
Sun sesquiquadrate Neptune. Our willpower is low as we stray from our goals and temporarily lose focus. It’s difficult to formulate — or stick to — clear goals during this transit. Concentrating on artistic or spiritual pursuits is better than focusing on matters that require straightforward, factual thinking today. It can be difficult knowing where or how to direct our willpower under this influence. It’s also a challenge knowing where we stand with others. Avoid such things as scheduling surgery, important appointments, job interviews, or launches of new projects at this time.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.

JULY 25
Mercury opposes Pluto today, and we can face some pressure to deal with problem areas. There can be mental tension, paranoid thoughts, or excessive suspicion. We might either feel a compulsive need to talk and question or withhold information. We can too quickly become embroiled in power struggles. However, if we aim to learn from our resentment, it can bring us closer to understanding what we truly want. Today’s Moon-Mars opposition excites our passions, although we may feel less in control of them than usual. It stirs up our need for action, activity, and challenges, but it can feel at odds with our emotional orientation. The Moon spends most of the day in Aquarius but enters Pisces and aligns with Jupiter tonight. We’re reaching for our joy, and we are seeking to grow, expand, and improve, especially through embracing our feelings, compassion, or downtime.
The void Moon occurs from 7:14 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:30 PM EDT.
JULY 26
A Mars-Chiron minor square this morning can point to touchiness or difficulties asserting ourselves confidently or naturally. A Mercury-Uranus quintile, on the other hand, inspires creative ways to approach technical matters. The Moon is in Pisces all day, and it’s a time for winding down or mellowing out and taking a break from the usual pace. The Pisces Moon understands that taking some downtime ultimately helps us be more productive. Emotional or mental refreshment gives us perspective. We may not have an easy time putting our ideas into action, however.
JULY 27
Mercury enters Leo today, and it will transit the sign until August 11th. With Mercury in Leo, our thinking is confident and grand, and clearly defined goals motivate us. We are expressive, convincing, decisive, and persuasive. We’re also firm about making decisions ourselves and letting our voices and input be heard. It’s not a time when we’re content with letting others make all the moves or decisions–we need to be involved. We take the lead, manage, direct, and create while Mercury is in Leo. We need to relate to information or create stories about it to absorb it. During this cycle, we should watch for being too inflexible or proud to change course. However, Mercury forms a quincunx to Jupiter shortly after it enters Leo today. We might waver, unable to reach a wholly satisfying decision or conclusion, making it better to reserve judgment. We may overestimate our abilities or underestimate the situation, or we might see-saw between alternatives. Whatever the case, it may be best to avoid jumping into something without planning, as necessary details are too easy to overlook at the moment. There can be some mental disorganization to manage temporarily. Today’s Pisces Moon encourages an intuitive approach to the day.
The void Moon occurs from 9:13 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries tomorrow, July 28th, at 5:58 AM EDT.
JULY 28
The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until 5:58 AM EDT, after which it moves into Aries. The Aries Moon is pioneering and direct, and it’s a better match for the Leo Sun. This afternoon, the Sun and Moon form a trine, promoting cooperation and clarity. Retrograde Jupiter returns to the sign of Aquarius, where it will transit for five months–until December 28th. Jupiter first entered Aquarius on December 19th, 2020, moved on to Pisces on May 13th, 2021, but then turned retrograde while still very early in the sign of Pisces. Now, Jupiter moves back into Aquarius. Jupiter in Aquarius expands our awareness of our place in the community and the needs of all. This transit encourages fairness, impartiality, individuality, and humanitarianism. We reap rewards through being more inclusive and just, and we’re opening our minds to progress. It’s in the world of ideas where we want to grow, improve, expand, and thrive, or it’s through our minds, beliefs, and ideas that we feel we can prosper. Generosity among friends and groups is a strong point of this Jupiter-in-Aquarius cycle.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Aries today at 5:58 AM EDT.
JULY 29
The Moon spends the day in forthright, action-oriented Aries. Mars leaves Leo and enters Virgo today, but before it goes, it opposes Jupiter. Both Mars and Jupiter are positioned very late in their respective signs, emphasizing a feeling of urgency and adding even more impulsiveness to the already extravagant nature of the aspect. We should watch for rushed decisions and actions now. With Mars-Jupiter, we have a strong desire to expand, to grow, and to do and know more. If we feel limited or restricted, or if we don’t know where to begin, this can serve to frustrate us. There can be impatience. What we want to do may conflict with what is possible. We may get fired up over opposing viewpoints, and we may need to adjust our action plan. The desire to go big is with us, but so is the tendency to overestimate. Competitive feelings, however, can motivate us to push ourselves a little harder–the trick will be to do so with moderation. Errors in judgment made now are likely due to impulsiveness and the overlooking of crucial details. Mars-Jupiter can bring a turning point to a project or even an attitude. We can feel passionately about our goals and beliefs, but we should watch that this doesn’t become self-righteousness. Instead, we might work hard at improving our ideas and uncovering information. There is a lot of creative energy generated now, but perhaps a little too much, so that tempers can flare. It’s best to watch for arrogance. Ideally, we harness this power to make changes and improvements. Mars transits Virgo from today until September 14th, and we have a passion for details and a need to do the right thing at just the right time. The satisfaction of a job well done is one of our greatest incentives now. We are more precise and concerned about our performance during this cycle.
JULY 30
Venus forms minor challenging aspects to Pluto and Saturn today, producing some tension from fear-based suspicions. These transits can stir problem areas in social interactions and relationships. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness result from a fear of losing something. We might not be able to imagine a direct route to our desires right now, possibly leading to a tendency to manipulate. Financial tensions can surface, and issues of trust can emerge in relationships. We could feel torn between two equally appealing desires, situations, or viewpoints. Or, the dilemma could be between pleasure and responsibility, and perhaps we’re not able to fully appreciate or manage either. Outside commitments can disrupt the flow or cause problems in our relationships. Still, it can also be a time for recognizing the needs and desires that we’ve suppressed. Getting into a healthier relationship with these buried needs can help. The Sun-Neptune challenge this afternoon suggests difficulties focusing on or even defining our goals. We may struggle with waning willpower or some lack of direction. It makes sense to consider ways to come to a better balance between our material and spiritual pursuits. The Moon continues its transit of assertive Aries until 4:08 PM EDT, after which it moves through deliberate Taurus.
The void Moon occurs from 3:38 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Taurus at 4:08 PM EDT.
JULY 31
The Moon spends the day in sensual, practical Taurus. However, Mercury’s minor square with Neptune can be somewhat disorienting. We tend to avoid confrontation with this transit, attempting to move around issues or otherwise taking an indirect approach. We’re more likely to perceive situations in an impractical or overly optimistic way under this influence, making it less than ideal for clear thinking and handling details. Still, with the Sun and Mercury in harmony with Juno and the True North Node, we’re in good shape for strengthening and supporting one another and, in the process, building trust. We take more pride in our relationships or projects, and we’re willing to put more effort into them. We want to learn, reason things out, and gain knowledge as a means to empower ourselves. These transits encourage us to grow, improve, and rise to a challenge.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Leo “This I do for me” is your motto at a time like this. This is your time to shine, like a swirl of starstuff that has finally reached critical mass and suddenly starts to give off more light than it receives. Issues of pride, mastery, and appreciation become more and more central to your lifestream as this cycle progresses, as does a very important lesson: it’s not what you do so much as how you do it, not who you are so much as how you make others feel about themselves. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it shouldn’t matter now.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Mars in Leo The thrill of the chase, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd: that’s what gets your juices flowing now that you’ve entered a new cycle. To be appreciated, to be admired (adored, even) – that’s what you crave. It’s a time of creativity, drama, and passion; a time when grabbing the spotlight and stealing the scene gives you a thrill. Is winning everything? No – but it’s way ahead of whatever comes in second!
Mars in Virgo As a new cycle dawns in your life, there arises a passion for details, a need to do just the right thing at just the right time, and a burning desire to have a place for everything and everything in its place. This can be hard on the digestion if taken to extremes! The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now.
Jupiter in Pisces Mysticism, sensitivity to the needs of others, and an awareness of karma (the link between the present and the past): these are your paths to spiritual growth now. Addressing these issues brings you gain and satisfaction at many levels. A tolerance for differences, an understanding of human frailties and shortcomings.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s much more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance.
