The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at 2:08 PM EDT.
On Saturday afternoon, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Virgo forms a square to the Moon in Sagittarius.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.
Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 11 degrees and 14 minutes of Sagittarius, and affecting planets at approximately 9 to 13 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) the most.

This week: The Sun is in Virgo; Mercury is in Libra; Venus is in Leo; Mars is in Gemini.
The Sun is in Virgo from August 22-September 22. Our focus shifts to the puzzle pieces–the little details of our lives. It is now time to take care of practical concerns. Attending to the details of everyday life may not sound like loads of fun, but it can certainly free us from unnecessary stress that results from “collecting” odds and ends of unfinished business.
This is an ideal time to get organized, do detailed work, and improve communications on the job. We take more pride in our work, chores, and health efforts. We also want to be more organized and informed during the Sun-in-Virgo cycle.
We’re learning humility and the benefits of developing skills, some level of perfectionism, and the importance of attention to detail. It’s a time of down-to-earth practicality when we prefer to invest our time and energy in things with realistic potential. We’re not inclined to ambition or “going big.” Attracting prosperity involves honest, careful, and attentive work and dedication.
Mercury is in Libra from August 25-September 23. [Later, Mercury turns retrograde, returns to Virgo, turns direct, then transits Libra again from October 10-29.] When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.
Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Leo from August 11-September 5. Love is magnificent and grand while Venus is in Leo. We take pride in love, and we are generous with our money as well. This is a warmhearted, teasing, expressive, proud, and extravagant placement for Venus. Love is a bit of a game–a game that is perpetual, as Venus in Leo is forever stuck in the romance stage of a relationship. We feed on attention, acknowledgement, validation, and adoration.
Venus in Leo loves to be adored, pampered, and admired. Pride and passion are hallmarks of this cycle. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
The Venus-in-Leo cycle can be a strong or profitable time for contests, lotteries, parties, recreation, drama, adornment, jewelry, costumes, art dealing, and all things golden. Generosity and warmth contribute to our ability to draw in the right resources. We can have a compelling desire to stand out, be remarkable, and feel special during this period.
Mars is in Gemini from August 20, 2022-March 25, 2023. [This is much longer than usual due to a Mars retrograde cycle from October 30, 2022-January 12, 2023.]
In Gemini, Mars is versatile and flexible but not especially determined or focused. We should watch for becoming so scattered that we’re ineffective. However, it’s an excellent period for diversifying our interests and understanding the power of our communications.
It’s an excellent time for strategizing and devising useful tactics to achieve our desires and goals. We’re resourceful and clever, and we know how to use words effectively.
Perhaps most notable during this period is our tactical skills. We know how to maneuver things to get our way. We use words to charm and express anger. We’re very talkative, and animatedly so, when passionate and enthusiastic about a topic.
Jupiter is in Aries.
Jupiter is in Aries from May 10 to October 28, 2022. This is part one of two, with the second and final part occurring from December 20, 2022, to May 16, 2023. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Aries.
Jupiter will head back into Pisces from October 28 to December 20, 2022–the final part of three in the Jupiter-in-Pisces transit. Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Leo from August 11-September 5. Love is magnificent and grand!
This week: On Sunday, the 28th, there can be a need to be mature in love. We assess our relationships from a practical standpoint, and we can feel inhibited when it comes to expressing our feelings. This can be a time when May-December romances are prominent. We can also be especially sensitive to rejection.
On Wednesday to Friday, there can be some awkward energy in our interactions. We’re seeking special meaning through our connections, which makes us a little more vulnerable to influence. We might doubt someone in our lives, or happiness, in general! Issues of power and control can arise, but they can be hard to discern. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Venus square Uranus August 26-27. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus contra-parallel Saturn August 27. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most. Some pulling back can occur in relationships now, as we are more self-conscious and cautious with our affections.
Venus opposition Saturn August 27-28. We keep others at arm’s length, unsure of whether we are loved or not. This is a somewhat inhibiting influence when it appears that people value utility over true love. An element of seriousness permeates our love relationships. We may feel criticized and inhibited, unloved and unsatisfied, but our worst enemies may be ourselves and our own fears of getting close to others.
Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter August 29. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus quincunx Neptune August 31. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming blinded by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.
Venus quincunx Pluto September 1-2. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron September 5. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus quincunx Jupiter September 9. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, August 28th, from 11:08 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Monday, August 29th, at 5:46 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, August 31st, from 6:44 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 1:12 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, September 2nd, from 1:23 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 6:41 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, there are no windows of opportunity this week. The next window will occur on Sunday, September 4th, from approximately 1:30 PM to 9:50 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Sagittarius.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus opposition Saturn. Not a good influence for financial endeavors. Burdens are magnified.
Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. Problems in our personal life likely won’t get resolved under this influence. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Uranus. We can have flashes of insight, but tend to be scatterbrained. Our ideas and communications may not be well-received because they don’t seem to others to carry weight. Our minds are not peaceful or harmonious under this influence, and irritable tempers, sarcastic speech, and dogmatism are negative expressions of this energy. However, fresh and creative ideas may come to us now.
Sun inconjunct (quincunx) Jupiter. The desire to experience something new or for more freedom to explore can amount to restlessness if we don’t know what it is we want. This is a time of adjustments, and perhaps of letting go of old habits, so that we can free ourselves up for different experiences.
Venus quincunx Neptune. Under this influence, we are apt to see what we want to see, rather than what actually is, when it comes to both financial affairs and affairs of the heart. Still, we tend to doubt our perceptions of perfection. The end result is a feeling of insecurity on romantic and social levels. Avoid making large purchases and commitments at this time.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks you thought you finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hyper-sensitivity and criticism.
Mars sextile Jupiter. Decisive action comes naturally now. We possess willpower, verve, and energy that we can direct toward achieving our goals. Success in contracts, negotiations, and business deals comes easily. We want to branch out and take on more challenges. A good time for making new goals or to initiate new projects (all things equal). Optimism and enthusiasm; adventurous spirit. Positive attitudes create winning situations now. A spirit of friendly competition prevails, as well as the desire to take beneficial action.
Venus quincunx Pluto. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
Mercury opposition Jupiter. In an attempt to attach greater meaning to our thoughts and ideas, we may exaggerate, overstate, or overestimate. We strive to find both meaning and purpose to our lives. However, it is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can focus.
Sun sesquiquadrate Pluto. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is strong during this influence. Meeting with obstacles in our paths, however, can force us into the position of using all of our resources to fight back, and we can discover resources we never knew we had in the process.

AUGUST 28
The day’s energies are on the serious side. The Moon spends the day in work-oriented, thoughtful Virgo, and we readily find problems to fix. With Venus opposite Saturn today, there can be some coolness in our interactions or withdrawal. Negative feedback or blockage can slow us down–ideally, only enough to pace ourselves or adjust our expectations. Financial limitations may make themselves known, or burdens of our debts or obligations to others magnify. We may need to pay the piper, or if we’ve been overdoing pleasures, a reminder of our responsibilities comes now. Burdens, commitments, lack, limitations, and problems can loom larger than usual under the Venus-Saturn influence, particularly regarding love, tastes, pleasure, and finances.
The void Moon occurs from 11:08 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Monday, August 29th, at 5:46 AM EDT.
AUGUST 29
The Moon finishes its transit of Virgo at 5:46 AM EDT when it moves into Libra. The Libra Moon is gracious, balanced, and fair. Still, the Moon opposes, and Venus forms a sesquiquadrate with Jupiter today, and there’s some tendency to go overboard, particularly with pleasure, feelings, and affections. It’s “borrow from the future” energy, and we should be careful not to commit to something for which we don’t yet have the resources. We seek a little more from our pleasures, money, or relationships. Ideally, restlessness stirred now encourages us to improve our situation but otherwise might lead to over-indulgence, immoderation, or exaggeration. High expectations can leave us vulnerable to ups and downs. It can be tempting to overreach if we’re not in touch with our feelings or are discontented. It’s best to manage impulsiveness and hastiness.
The Moon ends its void period at 5:46 AM EDT, when it enters Libra.
AUGUST 30
The Sun forms a quincunx with Jupiter this morning, and we can feel torn between two ideas or drives, perhaps see-sawing between alternatives. It can be difficult to arrive at satisfying conclusions. It’s a time of adjustments and possibly of letting go of old habits so that we can free ourselves up for different experiences. The Moon spends the day in Libra, and we aim to find the middle ground, compromise, and make peace. We should find it easier to moderate ourselves and adopt a balanced approach as the day advances and the Libra Moon forms a trine to Saturn–a steadying and clear-headed transit.
AUGUST 31
With a quincunx between Venus and Neptune today, we might want to see things realistically on the one hand and prefer to nurture a fantasy or look the other way on the other. Under this influence, there can be insecurity or doubts about others or our own feelings and perceptions. Later today, our timing is sharper, and confidence builds. There is a good balance between learning from tradition and seeing things progressively. Our thinking about work or long-term projects is robust. We head towards a Mars-Jupiter sextile, exact tomorrow morning, that’s opportunistic, energetic, and optimistic. We also move from a Libra Moon, active until 1:12 PM EDT, and very gracious and perhaps indecisive, to a Scorpio Moon–a determined, passionate influence.
The void Moon occurs from 6:44 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 1:12 PM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 1
Mars forms a sextile to Jupiter this morning, and we are enthusiastic about making changes and improvements. We are more courageous and energetic than usual. It can benefit us greatly if we direct this energy into worthwhile projects or causes, especially related to communicating, teaching, learning, and connecting. A spirit of gentle competition prevails as we seek to branch out and take on more challenges. This influence inspires enterprise and confidence in acting on our beliefs and convictions. We may be going to bat for the underdog. Later today, some uncertainty is possible as we head toward a Venus-Pluto quincunx. There can be re-assessments with close personal relationships, spending, entertainment, or social life issues. Fears can disrupt the flow, but they can help us see what may have been our personal blind spots.
SEPTEMBER 2
The Moon continues to transit perceptive, profound Scorpio until 6:41 PM EDT, after which the Sagittarius Moon encourages us to expand our minds and experiences. Mercury opposes Jupiter today–another influence stirring our desire to grow and think in big terms. We can be excited and enthusiastic about our ideas and anxious to share them. We need room to explore and create, visualize new solutions to problems, and express ourselves freely. However, we are inclined to exaggerate, and it’s best to watch for a strong tendency to overstate or overestimate in our quest for meaning. We might swing from blind faith to skepticism, making it difficult to make good, practical choices. We’re stretching our minds now, and while this is an excellent mental exercise, we should avoid making commitments until we’re more realistic. We should also watch for scattering our energies or taking on too many activities at once–we could be looking so far ahead that we forget the essential details or disclaimers. Positively, we might entertain possibilities that we wouldn’t normally consider.
The void Moon occurs from 1:23 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Venus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 6:41 PM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 3
The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, and this afternoon, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sagittarius Moon forms a square to the Virgo Sun. Our initiative is strong, although it tends to come from conflict or tension. It can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also great energy, motivation, and growth. We may be feeling especially ambitious and competitive. However, we may not know where to go with these feelings. Today’s Moon-Mars opposition is combative, and the Sun-Pluto sesquiquadrate is defensive. This minor Sun transit can aggravate fears and feelings of being powerless or overlooked. Buried emotions and motives can surface now. We might crave a sense of control over events, relationships, and circumstances, becoming frustrated at any sign that we don’t have it. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is persistent with this aspect. However, it’s best to rise above this pressure.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Virgo You’re coming into a new cycle centered on taking what you know and what you’ve got and then making the most of it in the real world. Assimilating information and experience, learning lessons and putting them into practice – that’s the focus as this cycle unfolds. It’s a time for prudence and stewardship, a time to tend to the details. You probably already have the grand ideals and visions: now you must get your hands dirty with the bricks and mortar and your mind busy with putting it all together.
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You’re a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative … perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.
Jupiter in Aries Faith in yourself and your future is emphasized as you begin this new cycle. A feeling that anything is possible leads to new ventures, a clean break from the past. At its best, this is a very positive and optimistic new cycle in your life, but at times, overconfidence can border on foolhardy bravery. Don’t burn your bridges behind you!
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
