The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Sunday, August 15th, 2021, at 11:19 AM EDT.
On Sunday, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Leo forms a square with the Scorpio Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

This week: The Sun is in Leo; Mercury is in Virgo; Venus is in Virgo until the 16th, after which Venus is in Libra; Mars is in Virgo.
The Sun is in Leo from July 22 to August 22. In Leo, the Sun is proud, outgoing, and playful. The Leo Sun is intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. It’s time to shine, add a touch of color and drama to our lives, and perform. Like the flowers and fruit of the season–blossoming and ripened–this is a time when we want to enjoy ourselves and express ourselves. We are more generous and grand in our gestures and attitudes. On the shadow side, we can also be self-centered and vain.
Mercury is in Virgo from August 11-30. When Mercury is in Virgo, we value precision in speech, thought, and process. This is a time when we analyze and discriminate between what we deem useful or impractical. Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules. Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in details. We should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in an overly factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.
Venus is in Virgo from July 21-August 16. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Venus is in Libra from August 16-September 10. We are more inclined to employ charm rather than aggressive behavior in order to get what we want during this cycle. Although Venus in Libra virtually lives for relationships, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We are very obliging with others–quite willing to negotiate and compromise. We can be especially idealistic about love. We prefer things be done the “right” way, and are turned off by aggressive or uncouth behavior. The shadow side of this position is dependency, inconsistency, and superficiality. In an attempt to avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to our partners but privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so! This is also a time when we are more artistically inclined. We tend to seek balance in our personal environment.
Mars is in Virgo from July 29-September 14. In Virgo, Mars is somewhat of a workhorse. We have a passion for details, as well as a need to do the right thing at just the right time under this influence. The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now. We are more precise and concerned about performance.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit. Jupiter is in Pisces from May 13th to July 28th, when it retreats into Aquarius. Jupiter returns to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. There will be another part to this 3-part act in 2022! Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from July 21 to August 16. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love.
Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues.
As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Venus is in Libra from August 16 to September 10. Venus rules Libra and thus is dignified in the sign. Venus feels right “at home” in Libra, where she seeks to balance and harmonize. With Venus in Libra, we can easily be in love with love. We are more comfortable with a close partner with whom we can seek to have a balanced relationship. We favor employing charm over aggressive pursuit to get what we want.
Although Venus in Libra is very relationship-focused, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy.
This week: On Sunday, we can be a bit flighty with one another, unsure whether we want to be close to someone or free from ties temporarily. On Saturday, we’re anxious to grow and improve, and we may draw in situations that help us do just that.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus in Libra As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty – these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.
Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn August 10-11. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus trine Pluto August 10-11. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships are intense and deep, but not draining.
Venus quincunx Jupiter August 13-14. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus August 15. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness. A desire to experiment in the romance department may be fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying or frustrating.
Venus trine True North Node August 21-22. We are more concerned about harmonizing and tend to be agreeable and cooperative. We could feel lucky in love, and we could meet someone who is good for us. Fortunate connections might be made now.
Venus trine Saturn August 22-23. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism and maturity in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor, and have much potential to last.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, August 15th, from 11:06 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 11:12 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, August 17th, from 9:43 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Wednesday, August 18th, at 1:58 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, August 19th, from 7:59 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Friday, August 20th, at 4:49 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Sun quincunx Neptune. It can be difficult to concentrate and to formulate clear goals just now. Misconceptions abound. Fear of being ineffective can undermine our confidence when it comes to making clear or definite decisions, and for doing new things.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus. Unusual attractions (to people and things) can have us acting on a whim. We may deal with freedom versus closeness issues in our relationships. Relationships or finances can be unpredictable. Changes now can create fresh opportunities, however, that can add to our sense of joy and freedom.
Mercury quincunx Saturn. Communication challenges today make it hard to get a point across. Delays, “red tape”, and vague feelings of forgetting important details.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Pluto. “Suspicious minds” characterize this transit, although if we harness the energy, we can develop strategies to get to the bottom of any matter. Mistrust, investigations. Some level of mental stress and pressure. A troubled mind.
Sun quincunx Pluto. Adjustments are necessary now in order for our lives to move forward. The need to make changes in our life that will further our psychological development arise now.
Jupiter semi-square Chiron. This can be a time when we are hungry for meaning and understanding, but it can be difficult to align ourselves with a personal philosophy or belief system that truly reflects our core. We might be led astray by beliefs and ideas now, or we might experience some form of crisis of faith. It is important to look within and come to a greater understanding of what we truly need or believe, rather than blindly following something that doesn’t truly serve our purpose. New business endeavors may require a closer look before pushing forward.
Mars quincunx Chiron. We might doubt the effectiveness of our efforts to go after what we want under this influence, which can lead to passive-aggressive behavior, defensiveness, or frustration.
Mercury quincunx Chiron. Decisions can be hard to come by under this influence, as we tend to doubt our perceptions or the effectiveness of our ability to solve problems. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now, which can lead to misunderstandings.
Mercury conjunct Mars. This is a good energy for debate or energetic mental work. We may be called upon to make a decision, but it may be a hasty, ill-considered one. We may be argumentative and irritable under this influence, and particularly impatient with vagueness. Be careful to avoid cutting words and aggressive driving. Our minds may be especially clear and active, and this can be a good time to eliminate wasteful activities. This influence excites and over-stimulates the whole nervous system.
Sun opposition Jupiter. Conflicting urges with regards to what we think we should do and what we want to do can be frustrating now. There can be a tendency to go overboard and to indulge in extravagances. Watch for overestimating your capabilities now. Culminations or surprising changes in a project or ambition might occur now. The urge to grow and expand is strong, but we might overreach.
Sun sesquiquadrate Chiron. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong, but may be hampered by a lack of confidence or a fear of being different.
Mercury trine Uranus. This is an opportune time to attend meetings and other organized group activities, to communicate online, and to take part in activities involving computers, scientific projects, and metaphysics. Unexpected gains may be realized through such mediums. The intuition is strong, and insights seem to come from “out of the blue”. Original, creative ideas are easy to come by.

AUGUST 15
The Moon spends much of the day in Scorpio, and the First Quarter Moon occurs later morning. We’re inclined to scope out the hidden layers of any given situation with this transit. We can feel some pressure to reach our goals, and obstacles encountered now can motivate us into action. Venus is about to change signs and will do so very early in the day tomorrow. Before Venus leaves Virgo, it forms a sesquiquadrate with Uranus, pointing to potentially impulsive moves with people or money. We might experience discontent with our current pleasures or pastimes, and a slight change may be satisfying at this time. It may be best to tame restlessness or abrupt moves but consider our needs for change and growth. The Moon heads into Sagittarius late today–at 11:12 PM EDT–stirring our spirit for adventure.
The void Moon occurs from 11:06 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 11:12 PM EDT.
AUGUST 16
Early today, Venus enters its own sign, Libra, where it performs very well and transits until September 10th. We’re not fond of out-and-out competition or aggressive pursuit, preferring win-win situations during this cycle. Usually quite willing to negotiate and compromise, we can be very obliging with others. We’re also idealistic about love, and we seek intellectual peers. We prefer things are done a particular way, and aggressive or uncouth behavior turns us off. The shadow expression of this position includes over-dependence and superficiality. To avoid unpleasant situations, we could quickly gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to partners while privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so. While Venus is in Libra, we are more artistically inclined or seek balance in our personal environment. This cycle is excellent for promoting cooperation, harmony, mutually beneficial connections, and fairness. We’re more likely to prosper during this cycle in partnership, through one-to-one associations, such as counseling, or in fields related to harmony, relationships, beauty, design, and the law. We attract things to us and appeal to others gently and kindly. The Moon spends the day in brave, truth-seeking, spirited Sagittarius. Still, today’s Mercury-Saturn quincunx can point to communication challenges that make it hard to get a point across or to navigate from one place to the next without hassle. It can also lead to mental blocks or difficult decisions as we tend to doubt ourselves (and others) and whether we have all the details we need to make good, practical choices. Sensitivity to what’s said or not communicated can run high today.
AUGUST 17
This morning, Mercury and the Sun form minor challenging aspects with Pluto, and we can become wound up relatively easily. Mental tension is possible, and decision-making perhaps stunted, ideally motivating us to handle problem areas. We can have a slightly suspicious way of looking at the way things work. If others are not agreeing or adopting our ideas, we may take this as a personal affront. Instead of getting where we want to go directly, we could take a roundabout route and manipulate others. We can feel impatient with shallow or slow thinking, and we can be irritable. An adjustment may be necessary before we can feel that we’re moving forward. There may be a minor power shift or a setback that has us feeling temporarily out of sorts or powerless, prompting us to make changes. We might need to let something go to further our psychological growth. The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius. While it’s an adventurous, freedom-loving sign, Sagittarian ruler, Jupiter, is heading toward a semi-square to Chiron, clipping our wings just a little. It’s the second in a set of three (previously in April and upcoming in November), and it can be a time when we are hungry for meaning and understanding. Still, it can be difficult to align ourselves with a personal philosophy or belief system that truly reflects our core. We might be led astray by beliefs and ideas now, or we might experience some form of crisis of faith. It is essential to look within and come to a greater understanding of what we truly need or believe, rather than blindly following something that doesn’t truly serve our purpose. New business endeavors may require a closer look before pushing forward.
The void Moon occurs from 9:43 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn tomorrow, Wednesday, August 18th, at 1:58 AM EDT.
AUGUST 18
The Moon moves into Capricorn at 1:58 AM EDT, sensitizing us to our ambitions, goals, and sense of control. Mercury aligns with Mars in the sign of Virgo tonight, and it’s a time of motivated, energetic work, particularly related to communications and the mind. Work and health can be a strong focus, interest, or topic. We want to get right to the point so that communications can be on the insensitive side but also direct and clear. Taking care of business is a central theme now. Keeping busy and making headway satisfies us more than usual, and it will be vital to channel excess mental energy constructively. Otherwise, we feel nervous, impatient, and irritable. There can be aggressive or excited thinking or communications. Both Mercury and Mars form a quincunx to Chiron today, complicating matters and increasing the chances that misunderstandings or frustrations can result from our discussions. With these aspects in play, doubts and sensitivity can figure strongly. We can find it challenging to be both assertive and sensitive and possibly see-saw between one and the other. It’s not easy to assert ourselves effectively without provoking others. The trick may be to combine sensitivity and directness instead of narrowing our choices to either/or.
The void Moon continues today until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:58 AM EDT.
AUGUST 19
The Moon spends the day in the sign of traditional Capricorn. However, today’s Uranus station and Sun-Jupiter opposition stir some unrest with the status quo. Uranus stations, turning retrograde today and will remain retrograde until January 18th, 2022. During this cycle, our desire to make changes in our lives can turn inward as we get in touch with what may be holding us back from living more spontaneously and authentically. We may be less overtly rebellious and more inclined to follow the rules. As the shift occurs this week, however, Uranian energy can feel challenging, and we can experience some tension until we acclimatize to the energy. The Sun opposes Jupiter today, and recent excesses can come to light, demanding a change or shuffling of priorities. At issue now are conflicting urges regarding what we think we should do and what we want to do. There are two areas of life where we have a particular need to shine, grow, and improve, represented by the Sun in Leo and Jupiter in Aquarius, but these may seem to be in direct conflict with one another at this time. Culminations or unexpected changes in a project or goal might occur, and this can be a time for reaping the rewards. The urge to grow and expand is strong. If we’ve been overreaching, however, it may be time to adjust our expectations.
The void Moon occurs from 7:59 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius tomorrow, Friday, August 20th, at 4:49 AM EDT.
AUGUST 20
Mercury forms a trine to Uranus this morning, encouraging inventiveness. With this mind-opening aspect, we seek answers that are not the most obvious ones, and we can get to some exciting places on a mental level now. We’re expressing ourselves in different or unique ways rather than falling back on old habits of thinking and communicating, and it’s successful. Conversations can be gently provocative, leading to new ideas and perspectives. Insights or creative ideas come suddenly, unexpectedly, and brilliantly. The Moon continues its transit of responsible Capricorn until 4:49 AM EDT, at which time it moves into humanitarian, unconventional Aquarius.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Aquarius today at 4:49 AM EDT.
AUGUST 21
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Aquarius, and we seek to be impartial. We’re fair and honest, and we’re drawn to new and unique ways of approaching the world around us. Venus is approaching a trine to the True North Node, and Mars approaches a trine to Uranus, furthering themes of improvement and progress. With the Venus-Node trine, we are more dedicated than usual to creating harmony. We make an extra effort to be agreeable and cooperative–an attitude that helps us reach our goals. We could feel lucky in love or business, and we might make a fortunate connection. Under this influence, we’re looking to branch out a little and explore our more independent or adventurous side. It’s far easier to let go of grudges or baggage in the name of progress. The Mars-Uranus trine encourages an open, bold, and progressive approach. This transit motivates us to get out of a rut, innovate, or entertain new methods, nudging us out of our comfort zones. We are in tune with our desire to make positive changes and improvements in our lives. Working toward our dreams and inspired goals comes naturally today. At the same time, we hold the power of detachment that helps us choose paths that make the most sense.

Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".

Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Leo “This I do for me” is your motto at a time like this. This is your time to shine, like a swirl of starstuff that has finally reached critical mass and suddenly starts to give off more light than it receives. Issues of pride, mastery, and appreciation become more and more central to your lifestream as this cycle progresses, as does a very important lesson: it’s not what you do so much as how you do it, not who you are so much as how you make others feel about themselves. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it shouldn’t matter now.
Mercury in Virgo Mental discipline and patience are keynoted as you enter into a new cycle. Thinking things through, accounting for all the details, making careful measurements: these and similar experiences keep your mind active and involved. An interest in health and work may come to the fore.
Mars in Virgo As a new cycle dawns in your life, there arises a passion for details, a need to do just the right thing at just the right time, and a burning desire to have a place for everything and everything in its place. This can be hard on the digestion if taken to extremes! The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s much more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
