Back to About Aries
Aries Dates: In the Tropical Zodiac, the Sun is in Aries from approximately March 21 to April 20. Note that the date and time of day that Aries begins and ends vary from year to year. If you were born on or near either of these dates, you would need to use a Sun Sign Calculator to determine your true Sun sign.
The ruling planet of the sign of Aries is Mars, depicted in box 1 above.
Mars is the planet of energy, action, and desire. It is the survival instinct and can be thought of as the “leftover” animal nature of humans. Aries has the impulsiveness and courage of its planetary ruler, Mars. Aries can have a love of conquest and is ready to take on a challenge.
The flowers associated with Aries are the honeysuckle and the tiger lily (depicted).
Aries’ element is Fire. There are three Fire signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire signs are spontaneous, reactive, and assertive.
With Fire, there is little in the way of reflection – fire is impulsive. Aries is an innovator, concerned more about the present and the future than the past, and is brave and enthusiastic.
The symbol of Aries is the Ram. Rams rush ahead, much like Aries-born people do!
Rams butt their heads into their enemies, and Aries natives are thought to approach life “head-on.” In history, rams were often symbols of leadership. Aries natives are said to be leaders and pioneers.
Aries’ mode is Cardinal. There are four Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.
Cardinal signs want action! They correspond to the beginning of each of the four seasons.
The planetary ruler of Aries is Mars, and this is the symbol or glyph for Mars. Mars symbolizes energy, spontaneity, and enterprise.
Box eight above is a depiction of the constellation of Aries.
The metal associated with Aries is iron.
Iron is connected to power, courage, and protection.
The house related to Aries is the first house. The first house is the house of initiation and personality. The first house is shaded in the chart wheel depicted here.
The first house is associated with self-image, the image we project to others, the first impression we make, how we start things, our defense mechanisms, our relationship with our immediate environment, our general outlook on life, physical appearance, first attitude towards the outside world, starting something new, how we come across, the “vibes” we give off, early conditioning, adaptability, outlook, physical characteristics, natural disposition, and self-interest.
Aries is related to the color red and its various shades, including scarlet. The color red has similar associations to Aries: assertive, bold, and confident.
The gemstones related to the sign of Aries are the diamond (intensity and focus), the bloodstone (courage, self-confidence, mental balance), the ruby (passion, courage, athletic ability, letting go of resentment), and the aquamarine (depicted in box 12 above).
Bloodstone was frequently worn to enhance constancy or endurance. The diamond is strong, brilliant, and beautiful. Its association with purity is apt for the Aries sign.
Aries is connected to the head–cranium, and face. It rules the circulation of blood in the head. Health issues associated with Aries include headaches, hair loss, and skin eruptions. If Aries is strong in the chart, the person may benefit from scalp massage and efforts to bring more circulation to the head. The American Book of Nutrition and Medical Astrology by Eileen Nauman also suggests acidosis is associated with Sun in Aries.
The opposite sign of Aries is Libra. Signs that share the same element as Aries (Fire) are Leo and Sagittarius. Signs that share the same mode (Cardinal) are Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The particular combination of element and mode (Cardinal Fire) is unique to Aries.
Aries is a positive, masculine, or yang sign as are Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Wherever you find Aries in a chart–whether it’s a natal chart, Solar Return, or progressed chart–is where you seek to be first, where you are ready to initiate and take action, and where you may be impatient or impulsive. This is where you are a pioneer–you take the lead or come first here.
