The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at 6:27 AM EDT.
On Thursday morning, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Pisces forms a square with the Moon in Gemini. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 33 minutes of Gemini forming a square with the Sun at 23 degrees and 33 minutes of Pisces, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 22 to 26 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Pisces; Mercury is in Pisces; Venus is in Aquarius; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Pisces from February 18-March 20. With the Sun in Pisces, we are guided by altruistic feelings. We are less motivated to do than we are to feel, imagine, and dream. A “what will be, will be” attitude reigns, and we are guided by a sense of universal correlations. Pisces rules empathy, selfless love, devotion, and wisdom. Its shadow side rules self-pity, a feeling of being victimized by life, passivity, and elusiveness.
Mercury is in Pisces from February 10-April 17. When Mercury is in Pisces, our thinking processes are more visual, intuitive, and imaginative. We are especially attuned to the world of emotion, which colors both our thoughts and our communication style. We guess well, express ourselves with imagery, and make decisions intuitively. We are more attracted to consciousness-raising information.
Venus is in Aquarius from March 1-26. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on his own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now. Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
Mars is in Taurus from February 14-March 31. We are determined, stubborn, and resolute. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goals are longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus re-entered Taurus on March 6th, 2019. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aquarius from March 2-26, 2019. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships. With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing. Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena. With Venus in Aquarius, it’s best to go into dates with new people casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism simply won’t work. We may also find ourselves attracted to, or attracting, people who are not our “type.”
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we can miss the mark even if we try to communicate the correct message. Our hearts and heads are not in the same place now, and with Mercury retrograde, the chances of misunderstandings and hurt feelings run higher than usual. Thursday and Friday are not ideal for getting close to someone. Insecurities are triggered.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aquarius March 1-26. love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus semi-square Jupiter March 7. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus contra-parallel Mars March 9-10. Passions are stimulated and intense. A fine line between love and hate. Competitiveness. Questions are raised or ultimatums made.
Venus semi-square Mercury March 10-11. Communications between lovers may feel superficial or unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. We may be especially sensitive to what’s being communicated now.
Venus semi-square Chiron March 14-15. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus semi-sextile Saturn March 17. We may feel somewhat reserved, not quite able to let our hair down without remembering our responsibilities. However, we’re capable of great balance and understanding.
Venus semi-sextile Mercury March 18.
Venus square Mars March 20-21. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus sextile Jupiter March 20-21. This aspect generates a happy, friendly, and optimistic attitude. People are a little more outgoing and sociable. Favors travel, education, and culture. Romantic opportunities. Harmony and goodwill.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, March 9th, from 12:15 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Sunday, March 10th, at 3:11 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, March 12th, from 5:31 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:48 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, March 14th, from 8:31 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 5:49 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, March 16th, from 2:03 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:57 PM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars semi-square Chiron. We can be easily offended under the influence of this transit. Touchiness. Difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner.
Mars sextile Neptune. Inspiration might be found now, and our intuition is strong. This influence favors dancing, swimming, photography, arts, entertainment. There can be letting go of anger, or a softening of the disposition now.
Mercury semi-square Venus. Difficulties in social or romantic communication are possible today. On the other hand, we may make more efforts to be polite and to communicate. Hypersensitivity, and lack of mental discipline. Our minds wander.
Sun sextile Pluto. Research brings rewards. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being. Opportunities to find or renew something we had lost, and to gain some power are available now.
Sun square Jupiter. We may feel vague restlessness and discontent with life as it is. We want more, but perhaps too much. Overestimation and exaggeration. Elevated moods, but unstable ones, as they may not be based on reality. Channeled well, this energy can represent creative power.
Mars trine Saturn. Work takes on definite shape, and we can see results from our efforts. This gives us a sense of responsibility and a feeling of directedness and purposefulness. This is a good time to temper our energy and to exercise better judgment. A good time to get and feel organized. Seniority is favored now. Traditional methods work, and thoroughness brings rewards.
Mercury conjunct Sun. We are especially sharp, communicative, and open at this time, as our wants are aligned with our thoughts. It’s a favorable time for solving problems. What we say or write now has impact, for better or for worse!
Venus semi-square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy are possible now as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships with others. We might have a hard time learning from one another as a result.
Mercury square Jupiter. Information overload is possible today. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. This is an unfavorable transit for travel. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate.
Mercury sextile Pluto. We possess more insight and psychological understanding than usual. We are willing to look beyond the surface of things and investigate further. Perhaps more importantly, we are more patient and strategic in our decision-making.

MARCH 10
The Moon continues its transit of Aries until 3:11 AM EDT, after which the Moon moves through the sign of Taurus. We’re looking to settle in and enjoy ourselves. With Mars sextile Neptune and semi-square Chiron today, this is a psychically open time. We’re more sensitive than usual, and we might open up to unusual or alternative methods of healing or the use of compassion and forgiveness for healing purposes. However, standing up for what we believe in may not be comfortable just now, and following the crowd might seem a safer and easier choice. There can be difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner, which can lead to some challenges but possibly also some interesting detours. This is a great time for enjoying some gentle inspiration or a spiritual boost. We’re attracted to physical expressions of emotion, including dancing, swimming, or photography. There can be a letting go of anger or a softening of our disposition, or we may act on our intuition or pursue a dream.
The Moon is void until it enters Taurus at 3:11 AM EDT.
MARCH 11
The Moon is in steady Taurus all day, and its alignment with Mars can stimulate our desires. A Taurus Moon can bring us down to earth to some degree, although retrograde Mercury and Venus forming a semi-square can point to some unrest or a tendency to take disconnects a little too seriously. There can be some difficulty concentrating, lack of mental discipline, and perhaps hypersensitivity. There may be a tendency to voice complaints rather than engage in productive conversations. We are likely to be feeling sociable and a little indulgent, perhaps lacking concentration when it comes to work or mundane tasks today. Even so, action-oriented Mars is heading towards harmony with Saturn and next week, with Pluto, and the Moon taps into these energies today. It’s a great time to connect with our ambitions and to gain a stronger understanding of what we’re capable of achieving.
MARCH 12
The Moon continues its transit of Taurus until almost midday (EDT) when it enters Gemini. With the Gemini Moon, we crave mental stimulation and a variety of interests and things to do or learn. We’re especially responsive and sensitive to what’s going on around us, and we’re more adaptive than usual. While this is lighthearted energy, as the day advances, a Sun-Pluto sextile comes into play, and we’re seeking a little more depth from our activities and connections. This influence subtly increases our ambition, determination, and dedication. Making improvements or working toward a personal goal can be successful now. We tend to direct our energy constructively and seek out new insight into our lives, although with a Sun-Jupiter square also approaching, we should watch for going overboard.
The Moon is void from 5:31 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:48 AM EDT.
MARCH 13
We’re challenged to work with contrasting energies today with the Sun sextile Pluto and square Jupiter. As well, we’re heading towards a very practical and deliberate Mars-Saturn trine that is decidedly different energy than the extravagant square between the Sun and Jupiter. We can find ourselves quite ambitious and eager to expand, and while our ideas are big, we’re reminded of the limits of our capabilities and must adjust accordingly. While the Sun’s square to Jupiter can stimulate much optimism and elevated moods, our state of mind is fragile as things are overblown or unrealistic. We can feel some discontent, and we may be seeking more meaning, growth, or change. Helping us to understand that bigger isn’t always better is the Mars-Saturn influence, exact tomorrow morning, which favors discipline, moderation, tradition, and realism. While energies are big and on the heavy side, the Moon transits Gemini, reminding us to detach just enough to enjoy ourselves.
MARCH 14
The Mars-Saturn trine perfects this morning and is useful for focusing our energies on practical priorities. Traditional methods work, and thoroughness brings rewards. Mercury in retrograde motion aligns with the Sun and forms a trine to the true North Node, bringing illumination to our thoughts. It’s a favorable time for processing recent events and ideas, connecting with others and information, and for beginning to look at problems or issues from a new perspective and with a new understanding. What we say or write now has an impact–for better or for worse! Significant new ideas can be birthed at this time, and these are likely to have real staying power or importance in our lives. Past matters can come up for further inspection today, and our inner worlds can be very animated as a result. It’s a good idea to take notes, as we may not yet see the significance of what we’re discovering and what new ideas might result from these discoveries. While insights are likely now, it’s important to watch for going over the top with our communications and conclusions with Sun/Mercury square Jupiter.
The Moon is void from 8:31 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Cancer at 5:49 PM EDT.
MARCH 15
Venus semi-square Chiron this morning can point to some blocks to intimacy as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships. However, with our vulnerabilities triggered and revealed, we are in a better position to see what needs our attention, which is one step towards healing. Retrograde Mercury forms a square with Jupiter today, and we can be eager to figure something out, but it can be all too easy to miss or neglect essential details or to harp on those that don’t matter as much. Decisions made now are unlikely to be objective. Re-assessing decisions we’ve already made, or adjusting our plans, may be in order. It’s a good time for thinking big, but refinements will likely be necessary later. Watch for exaggeration and overstatements. The Moon spends the day in protective Cancer.
MARCH 16
Mercury forms a sextile to Pluto today, encouraging us to develop strategies and goals or giving us a sense of mental direction. This influence stimulates goal-oriented thinking. We benefit from focus, concentration, research, analysis, and strategy. We’re willing to look beyond the surface of things and investigate topics more deeply. This influence motivates us to get to the root of a problem. Deep insights gained now help us to make better choices. Conversations are probing, investigative, and meaningful. The Moon spends much of the day in the sign of Cancer, leaving the sign and entering Leo at 8:57 PM EDT and stimulating our desire to reach out and share ourselves with others in heartfelt ways.
The Moon is void from 2:03 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Leo at 8:57 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Pisces The mystic, the martyr, the sinner, and the saint: these archetypes take on greater importance in your life at a time like this. Forgiveness, compassion, and understanding come naturally, when you look at life from an eternal perspective – and if anyone ever does know such things, you’ll probably come to understand them as this cycle unfolds. This can be a phase of sublime spiritual development, to be sure. But you should be aware of tendencies to believe too quickly, too deeply, or to become dependent on things or people that seem to offer quick and easy answers to life’s deepest yearnings.
Mercury in Pisces Knowing things without knowing how you know them is typical at a time like this. The mystical, the universal, the eternal: these are the things that stir your curiosity. Call it psychic, call it deja vu … it can be there when you call on it, whatever you call it. (Remembering the little things might become more difficult, however: it’s tough to remember if you paid the electric bill when you’re more interested in the eternal verities.)
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
