The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 6:55 AM EDT.
On Thursday morning, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Cancer forms a square with the Moon in Libra. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 16 degrees and 58 minutes of Libra forming a square with the Sun at 16 degrees and 58 minutes of Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 15 to 19 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Cancer; Mercury is in Leo; Venus is in Cancer; Mars is in Leo.
The Sun is in Cancer from June 21-July 22. We are self-protective and insular under this influence. Our attention turns to our nest–our families, homes, and anything that makes us feel “at home,” safe, and secure. Nurturing and taking care of our loved ones and our pet projects come into focus. Emotions run deep. We are more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon while the Sun is in Cancer.
Mercury is in Leo from June 26-July 19 and then August 11-29. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Venus is in Cancer from July 3-27. In Cancer, Venus is nurturing, protective and self-protective, cautious, and fertile. We experience many emotional ups and downs in love under this influence due to increased sensitivity and impressionability. We are tender, romantic, and attached. Cancer love is dedicated, warm, and devoted. We show our love through our devotion, care, and concern. We are affectionate and cuddly, and we’re at our best when we feel safe and secure.
Mars is in Leo from July 1-August 18. In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have grand goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Cancer from July 3 to 27, 2019. We treat lovers with sympathy and tenderness, providing the emotional nurturing that they need. We tend to “play it safe” when it comes to relationships. Love and devotion are most important to us and provide us with a sense of inner security. We seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are quite devoted to our partners, and we seek such devotion in return. However, we could also become possessive, manipulative, and stifling. Familiarity is more important to us now. Our fear of rejection is perhaps overdeveloped, and we offer our hearts cautiously as a result. We pay more attention to our lovers’ feelings than their words. We feel threatened if a lover acts in an impersonal, overly independent, or detached manner. Safe and solid relationships are more appealing. Romantic and emotional hurts are very hard to forget.
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we are open to new experiences and ways of relating, but we can also be reticent about putting our hearts into something or someone.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Cancer July 3-27. Nurturing (or being nurtured), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time – these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Venus parallel the Sun June 29-30. A strong desire for harmony and comfort fill us now. We may be moved to express our affections.
Venus square Chiron July 7-8. Not a commitment-friendly transit. We are somewhat fearful of investing ourselves emotionally in a relationship.
Venus sextile Uranus July 7-8. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus quincunx Jupiter July 15-16. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, July 7th, from 12:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Monday, July 8th, at 2:07 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, July 9th, from 3:35 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio the next day, Wednesday, July 10th, at 5:29 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, July 11th, from 8:28 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Friday, July 12th, at 11:05 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, July 13th, from 9:30 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, July 14th, at 7:05 PM EDT.
July 2019:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
This week, the Moon is waxing, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week from Wednesday, July 10th, at approximately 4:25 PM, to Thursday, July 11th, at approximately 8:25 PM while the Moon is in Scorpio. Mercury is retrograde and we’re between eclipses, however, and this is not ideal for most new beginnings.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars sesquiquadrate Neptune. Disorganization, lack of drive, lack of forethought, impracticality, and carelessness are strong possible energies to deal with now. Energy and time are too easily wasted. It’s hard to know what we want and where we’re headed under this influence, and passive-aggressive behavior is likely, as we may not feel effective enough to take direct action or assert ourselves directly. There may be a desire to act upon an impractical fantasy, or an unusual impulse.
Venus square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy, learning from one another, and commitment can be experienced now. Insecurities on a social level can be magnified.
Venus sextile Uranus. This is a favorable influence for social meetings and events, and for situations that call for treating others with equality and respect. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements as well as financial undertakings. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. A good time for financial undertakings involving electronics, technology, the internet, metaphysics, and the arts, as well as group activities. A taste for the offbeat is in order.
Sun inconjunct (quincunx) Jupiter. The desire to experience something new or for more freedom to explore can amount to restlessness if we don’t know what it is we want. This is a time of adjustments, and perhaps of letting go of old habits, so that we can free ourselves up for different experiences.
Mercury conjunct Mars. This is a good energy for debate or energetic mental work. We may be called upon to make a decision, but it may be a hasty, ill-considered one. We may be argumentative and irritable under this influence, and particularly impatient with vagueness. Be careful to avoid cutting words and aggressive driving. Our minds may be especially clear and active, and this can be a good time to eliminate wasteful activities. This influence excites and over-stimulates the whole nervous system.
Sun opposition Saturn. Our confidence is undermined by feelings of doubt, pessimism, or feelings of guilt. Feeling blocked, encountering obstacles to progress, and inhibitions are prominent under this influence. A heavy dose of realism seems forced upon us under this influence, but our efforts to measure up to expectations can ultimately increase our confidence in our ability to be responsible for ourselves. This influence is a somber one.
Sun trine Neptune. We’re at the right place at the right time, probably because our hunches are more likely to be correct and we are “tuned in”. We are inspired, and charitable acts now will serve to lift our spirits like no drug can. A good time for self-improvement programs or efforts. Instinctual judgment is enhanced under this influence. We are able to see matters, and people, from a different perspective–one that allows for, and even finds beauty in, differences.
Mars trine Chiron. We may have the opportunity to take the lead, or to take action, regarding matters that lead to healing, cleansing, or teaching now. We can feel a sense of mission now. There is likely to be a feeling of fearlessness when it comes to addressing problem areas, and self-confidence as well. There is a drive to take positive action, usually to defend or help others (or ourselves). It’s a strong period for cooperation and purposeful activity.
Mars square Uranus. We have a tendency to take risks, to feel restless, and to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences. We assert our wills and individuality powerfully, and we are willing to fight for freedom. We might feel rebellious in the face of rules and regulations, particularly those we might feel are outdated, or anything that requires us to conform. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to change our goals or actions. Energy is stop-and-go, and it can be hard to focus on only one activity.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.

JULY 7
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Virgo, and we’re more particular than usual, noticing the details of our lives more than usual. Mercury, Virgo’s ruler, stations and turns retrograde today. Mercury’s retrograde lasts until July 31st, beginning in the sign of Leo and ending in the sign of Cancer. During this cycle, our thinking is turned inward as we review and reassess matters. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness–times when meditation, journaling, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored more than usual. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication and transportation can reconnect us to other, possibly more meaningful, means of connecting. The more difficult times are the periods of the shifts themselves (the days surrounding the stations — today and July 31st), after which we grow more and more accustomed to the motion. We should be observing and reviewing rather than making critical decisions with this shift since we’re also between two eclipses.
The Moon is void from 12:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Monday, July 8th, at 2:07 AM EDT.
JULY 8
While a square between Venus and Chiron can point to blocks to intimacy and insecurities, a sextile between Venus and Uranus also forms today and brings us (gently) out of our shells, encouraging our bolder, more innovative natures, socially speaking. We are most interested in all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements, entertainment or pleasures, and financial undertakings. We may be experimenting, improvising, and trying on new ways of relating to others and expressing ourselves. We may be discovering alternative ways to make (or spend) money. We’re freer with our feelings, although a little detached, and we find beauty in the unfamiliar or uncommon. Also today, retrograde Mercury aligns with Mars. A problem from the past can re-emerge now, and we feel driven to take care of it, although it can be challenging to stay centered. We should watch for impatience, snappiness, and impulsive moves and words. This conjunction is suitable for motivated, energetic work, particularly related to communications and the mind. We may want to get right to the point, so that communications may be on the insensitive side. With Mercury retrograde, we might renew interest in handling an old problem or reviving an old project. This can be a time of racing minds and excited thoughts. Also today, Chiron stations as it turns retrograde. Chiron’s retrograde cycle lasts until December 12th and is a good time for introspection. We might reassess mental and physical health programs in our lives during this period. The Moon ends its transit of Virgo and enters Libra at 2:07 AM EDT.
The void Moon ends when the Moon enters Libra today at 2:07 AM EDT.
JULY 9
The First Quarter Moon occurs today, and so does the Sun’s annual opposition to Saturn, and we can feel compelled to make changes. The Sun in Cancer forms a square to the Moon in Libra, and we may become aware of obstacles related to a recent plan or project. With the Sun-Saturn opposition, we can experience a reality check as well, likely related to our work, responsibilities, or the rules, in general. Feelings of doubt, pessimism, or guilt may undermine our confidence until we make corrections. Feeling blocked, encountering obstacles to progress, and inhibitions are all possible under this influence. While there can be a letdown, our efforts to measure up to expectations can ultimately increase confidence in our ability to be responsible for ourselves. Focusing too much on our feelings may not be very productive right now. This is a time for reevaluating goals, taking into better account the limits of time and energy. It can be a good time for developing real solutions to long-term problems and for recognizing the meaning behind recent restrictions or limitations. We might acknowledge the need to adopt a humbler, more mature, and possibly more conservative approach. We might also need to catch up on neglected duties or responsibilities. The Sun aligns with the True North Node of the Moon today, and this encourages and perhaps challenges us to grow, improve, and aspire to our goals.
The Moon is void from 3:35 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio tomorrow, Wednesday, July 10th, at 5:29 AM EDT.
JULY 10
The Moon continues its transit of Libra until 5:29 AM when it enters Scorpio. With the Scorpio Moon, we take our emotions more seriously than usual, and we’re unafraid of doing our own thing. The Sun forms a quintile to Uranus and heads toward a trine to Neptune, making for a potentially very creative day. We can feel inspired, and charitable acts now lift our spirits. We see matters, and people, from a different perspective–one that not only allows for but finds beauty in differences. This is a fluid, graceful influence. We’re tuned into our intuition or access it more naturally now. It’s easier than usual to find inspiration, and we may be moved to help, support, or give of ourselves. Discovering creative and innovative methods or solutions to problems can figure strongly today.
The void Moon ends when the Moon enters Scorpio today at 5:29 AM EDT.
JULY 11
Early today, we may have the opportunity to take the lead, or to take action, regarding matters that lead to healing, cleansing, or teaching now. We’re fearlessly addressing problem areas. While the Mars-Chiron trine opens us up to healing and repair, a Mars-Uranus square early afternoon can tempt us to take risks or to act on impulses without considering consequences. We have little patience with feelings of being restricted or limited under this influence. We might feel rebellious in the face of rules and regulations, particularly those we think are outdated, or frustrated with anything that requires us to conform. We’re inclined to assert our independence abruptly or to attempt to enforce changes. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to redirect our energy or enthusiasm or alter our goals. Energy is stop-and-go, and it can be hard to focus on only one activity at a time. Inner tension begs for release now, but we should watch for impulsive or rash decisions. The Moon spends the day in the sign of perceptive Scorpio, harmonizing with the Cancer Sun and Neptune in Pisces this afternoon shortly after the square between Mars and Uranus separate, encouraging us to relax and flow along rather than fight the waves.
The Moon is void from 8:28 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Friday, July 12th, at 11:05 AM EDT.
JULY 12
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 11:05 AM EDT, after which it moves through Sagittarius. While the Scorpio Moon encourages us to go within or go deep, the Sagittarius Moon encourages a direct, spontaneous approach to the world, at least on an emotional level. Retrograde Mercury and Neptune form a sesquiquadrate, and this can serve to diffuse our concentration or focus in the first half of the day. As the day progresses, we find it easier to connect and communicate a little more clearly. This Moon-Mercury connection helps us find common ground and helps open up the lines of communication. We’re enjoying more honesty now.
The void Moon ends when the Moon enters Sagittarius today at 11:05 AM EDT.
JULY 13
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Sagittarius, stimulating our need for some spontaneity. The Sagittarius Moon aligns with Jupiter today, and we’re reaching for our joy, trusting in a mission or something higher than us. We’re embracing our brave, adventurous, and confident side, and we are seeking to grow, expand, and improve. However, as the day advances, we approach a Sun-Pluto opposition that occurs late morning tomorrow, and there can be some pressure to perform or to deal with problem areas. This influence can bring a tricky or buried issue to a head. Matters of power and competition can emerge for handling.
The Moon is void from 9:30 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, July 14th, at 7:05 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Cancer Being more in touch with your emotional roots is a keynote of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. This has to do with feelings, but it’s more than that: it’s about making the things you feel and care about a reality. At some levels, this means a greater focus on family life – parents, children, relatives, the whole domestic scene. On a somewhat broader scale, you’re likely to find that houses and other real property take on greater significance for you. Nurturing is where it’s at in your life now: making things grow and taking care of them, planting seeds that will develop and survive far into the future – that’s what it’s all about.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Venus in Cancer Nurturing (or being nurtured), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time – these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Mars in Leo The thrill of the chase, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd: that’s what gets your juices flowing now that you’ve entered a new cycle. To be appreciated, to be admired (adored, even) – that’s what you crave. It’s a time of creativity, drama, and passion; a time when grabbing the spotlight and stealing the scene gives you a thrill. Is winning everything? No – but it’s way ahead of whatever comes in second!
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
