First Quarter Moon
The FULL MOON Lunar Eclipse occurs on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at 5:39 PM EDT.
A Lunar eclipse is an especially potent lunation — in this case a potent Full Moon. Lunar eclipses are relationship-oriented. The “crisis” that these eclipses tend to elicit is a crisis of lack–a time when we suddenly realize a great need or want. The impact of the crisis can act to sever a relationship–it’s possible. But it can also bring two people together with a sudden awareness of a great need for each other. Although Lunar eclipses are more relationship-oriented than Solar eclipses, they are not always about relationships between two people. They can trigger awareness of need in other areas of our lives, such as our relationship to work, to our health and bodies, and so forth. This is a time when matters come to light–things that have been brewing under the surface.
When a Full Moon occurs, we can suddenly burst forth with proclamations and outpours that seem fresh and new, simply because they are not yet rationalized. A Lunar eclipse is a more potent Full Moon, and its effects tend to last longer—approximately six months.
This eclipse occurs when the Moon is at approximately 24 degrees of Capricorn, opposing the Sun at 24 degrees Cancer, and is a Partial Lunar Eclipse.
Lunar Eclipses are about relationships and polarities. With the Cancer-Capricorn axis involved, this Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at our needs, lacks, and wants in our lives concerning the balance between our private lives, domesticity, our need for a home base, and nurturance (represented by Cancer) versus our public lives, careers, reputation, and accountability (represented by Capricorn). Attachments and love are ruled by Cancer, while achievements and rewards/punishments are ruled by Capricorn. In some ways, this polarity deals with the balance between unconditional love and conditional love. Cancer encourages us to value our home base and our roots, while Capricorn persuades us to consider our sense of duty and responsibility along public or professional lines. While Cancer may be content to be dependent, Capricorn urges us to be grown-up and responsible. Cancer represents the origin, and Capricorn represents the goal. Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what the Full Moon invites us to do.
This Full Moon is about balancing our commitment to our career and families. Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the coming months, we will discover what this means for us. For now, we can’t sit on our feelings. We need to express them. The Full Moon illuminates this conflict. Some sort of crisis (which can be a crisis of consciousness) or sudden awareness of a lack in our lives provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs within the context of the house polarity where the eclipse occurs in our natal charts. Relationships may be challenged, broken, or strengthened dramatically at this time. Our discovery is emotionally charged and dramatic. Epiphanies are likely at this time as we become acutely aware of our lack. This understanding can propel us into positive action.
This eclipse is one in a series of eclipses that fall along the Cancer/Capricorn axis. It can be viewed as one of many cosmic pushes regarding the themes it has been and will be stimulating.
Full Moons and Lunar Eclipses bring issues in our lives to fulfillment. Our emotions are heightened, and there is often some sort of drama involved with the house, sign, and any contacted planets activated by the Full Moon. Look to 24 degrees of Capricorn (and Cancer) in your own chart. This Lunar Eclipse gives us a cosmic push to make needed changes in our lives. The areas of life activated by the eclipse may see dramatic turns, after which the path is clear to move forward. Note that whatever “happens” at this time is nothing truly new. The issues have been brewing inside of us, and emotions have been building. Something comes to light at the time of the Full Moon, and if we get in touch with our emotions, we can get a better idea of what needs to change, or what needs to go.
This Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn is bound to thrust us into a state of heightened awareness of flaws in the structures of our lives, particularly in our career or outer structures and our home and family structures. Decisions made now are emotionally-driven.
This Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon is aligned with Pluto and opposite Mercury, and at the same time as a Venus-Saturn opposition. This configuration is powerful and complicated at once. The need to take action feels urgent.
Read more about the eclipses here. See The Astrology of 2019 and 2019 Eclipse charts.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 24 degrees and 4 minutes of Capricorn forming an opposition with the Sun at 24 degrees and 4 minutes of Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 19 to 29 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Cancer; Mercury is in Leo until the 19th, after which it retreats into Cancer; Venus is in Cancer; Mars is in Leo.
The Sun is in Cancer from June 21-July 22. We are self-protective and insular under this influence. Our attention turns to our nest–our families, homes, and anything that makes us feel “at home,” safe, and secure. Nurturing and taking care of our loved ones and our pet projects come into focus. Emotions run deep. We are more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon while the Sun is in Cancer.
Mercury is in Leo from June 26-July 19 and then August 11-29. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Mercury is in Cancer from July 19-August 11. When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Venus is in Cancer from July 3-27. In Cancer, Venus is nurturing, protective and self-protective, cautious, and fertile. We experience many emotional ups and downs in love under this influence due to increased sensitivity and impressionability. We are tender, romantic, and attached. Cancer love is dedicated, warm, and devoted. We show our love through our devotion, care, and concern. We are affectionate and cuddly, and we’re at our best when we feel safe and secure.
Mars is in Leo from July 1-August 18. In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have grand goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Cancer from July 3 to 27, 2019. We treat lovers with sympathy and tenderness, providing the emotional nurturing that they need. We tend to “play it safe” when it comes to relationships. Love and devotion are most important to us and provide us with a sense of inner security. We seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are quite devoted to our partners, and we seek such devotion in return. However, we could also become possessive, manipulative, and stifling. Familiarity is more important to us now. Our fear of rejection is perhaps overdeveloped, and we offer our hearts cautiously as a result. We pay more attention to our lovers’ feelings than their words. We feel threatened if a lover acts in an impersonal, overly independent, or detached manner. Safe and solid relationships are more appealing. Romantic and emotional hurts are very hard to forget.
This week: From Tuesday to Thursday, Venus aligns with the North Node of the Moon, opposes Saturn, and forms a trine to Neptune. This configuration is complicated–we’re striving to break free from limitations or habits that keep us from connected more heartfully with our loved ones and deeper needs. While it’s likely to be a struggle, we have some help in the form of faith in our mission. More struggles with our attachments are in the works as Venus heads into an opposition to Pluto on Saturday, exact on Sunday, the 21st.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Cancer July 3-27. Nurturing (or being nurtured), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time – these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Venus quincunx Jupiter July 15-16. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is with us now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs. Troubles in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
Venus opposition Saturn July 16-17. We keep others at arm’s length, unsure of whether we are loved or not. This is a somewhat inhibiting influence when it appears that people value utility over true love. An element of seriousness permeates our love relationships. We may feel criticized and inhibited, unloved and unsatisfied, but our worst enemies may be ourselves and our own fears of getting close to others.
Venus conjunct North Node July 17. This is a time for reaching out to others and making connections that further our growth. Cooperation brings rewards. There could be a feeling that we’re lucky in love or in our social life now.
Venus trine Neptune July 17-18. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.
Venus opposition Pluto July 20-21. This is a period of intense feelings, as well as possible emotional distress and tension caused by romantic troubles or social manipulation. An experience of being used or abused physically, emotionally or sexually may cause us suffering or disappointment. Sexually driven emotions are likely now. Fears of betrayal may get the best of us.
Venus conjunct Mercury July 23-24. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, July 13th, from 9:30 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, July 14th, at 7:05 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, July 16th, from 5:39 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Wednesday, July 17th, at 5:19 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, July 18th, from 11:54 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Friday, July 19th, at 5:20 PM EDT.
July 2019:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
Until the Lunar Eclipse on July 16th, the Moon is waxing, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions, after which the Moon is waning, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, also with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, there are no windows of opportunity this week. The Lunar Eclipse and retrograde Mercury are also considered problematic for brand new beginnings. This is a difficult week astrologically.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Sun opposition Pluto. The Sun in dynamic aspect to Pluto suggests willfulness and dealing with issues of power and competition. We may feel on edge, volatile, or even threatened. In extreme cases, infantile rage is possible. There is an inner drama taking place now, and a feeling that external circumstances are undermining our own feeling of powerfulness. In the process, we may be able to get in touch with our internal motivations. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is strong during this influence. Meeting with obstacles in our paths, however, can force us into the position of using all of our resources to fight back, and we can discover resources we never knew we had in the process.
Venus quincunx Jupiter. A strong desire for the pleasures of life is emphasized now, although our eyes are often bigger than our stomach. Challenges in relationships now are likely due to overblown expectations. It can be challenging to find a balance between responsibilities and the desire for self-gratification.
Venus opposition Saturn. Not a good influence for financial endeavors. Burdens are magnified.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We experience information overload, and we neglect to consider details. People tend to exaggerate today.
Venus trine Neptune. We are more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. Compassion, harmony, kindness, and openness characterize this transit. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. This can be a “magical” time on a romantic and social level. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. Romance is highly favored.

JULY 14
The Sun opposes Pluto today, and we can more clearly see areas of life where we’ve been holding onto something too tightly or giving away our personal power, likely through relationships or events. This can feel uncomfortable or can be disruptive, but it can also heighten self-awareness. Outside forces can remind us of our need to take charge of our lives, but shortcuts to gaining control will not work out for us. We might formulate strategies for managing our fears or worries. A Sun-Jupiter quintile helps us to see patterns more clearly. It also encourages us to view what’s happening in a positive light. We’re interested in making the best of our circumstances now. The Moon continues its transit of Sagittarius until 7:05 PM EDT, after which it moves through the sign of Capricorn. The Sagittarius Moon is enthusiastic and idealistic, and later, the Capricorn Moon inclines us to consider the practical side of life.
The void Moon period ends with the Moon enters Capricorn at 7:05 PM EDT.
JULY 15
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Capricorn, harmonizing with Uranus this morning. While we’re more aware of our practical responsibilities and drawn to the tried and true, we’re open to new ways of getting things done. In fact, we enjoy making small changes that benefit our projects. We have a broader sense of responsibility and naturally take an inventory of our priorities. With a Capricorn Moon, we strive for increased self-sufficiency. We’re especially goal-oriented and particularly aware of our responsibilities and performance. Our judgment is sound, and practical matters are a significant focus.
JULY 16
The Moon is in Capricorn all day, reaching full at 5:38 PM EDT. This Full Moon is a partial Lunar Eclipse. Full Moons and Lunar Eclipses bring issues in our lives to fulfillment. Our emotions are heightened, and there is often some drama involved with the house, sign, and any contacted planets activated by the eclipse. The areas of life activated by the eclipse may see dramatic turns, after which the path is clear to move forward. Something comes to light now, and if we get in touch with our emotions, we can get a better idea of what needs to change, or what needs to go. Epiphanies are likely and can propel us into affirmative action. However, today the atmosphere is highly charged, and it may be difficult to maintain objectivity. Venus forms a quincunx to Jupiter early today and heads into an opposition to Saturn, and we can wrestle with our desires. Negative feedback or blockage can slow us down–ideally only enough to pace ourselves or to adjust our expectations. Financial limitations may make themselves known, or burdens of our debts or obligations to others are magnified. We may need to pay the piper, or if we’ve been overdoing pleasures, a reminder of our responsibilities comes now. Burdens, responsibilities, lack, limitations, and problems can loom larger than usual under the Venus-Saturn influence, particularly with regards to love, pleasure, and finances.
The Moon is void from 5:39 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Wednesday, July 17th, at 5:19 AM EDT.
JULY 17
The Venus-Saturn opposition early today reminds us of our responsibilities, which can temporarily feel more burdensome than usual. As the day advances, we’re likely to embrace our needs to disconnect from work and obligation so that we can more fully enjoy ourselves or engage with family and comfortable activities. This can be a good time for connecting with others who help move us closer to our objectives, particularly goals related to emotional wholeness, family, and domestic matters. We are more concerned with harmonizing than usual and tend to be agreeable and cooperative. We might make fortunate connections. The Moon finishes its transit of Capricorn at 5:19 AM EDT, after which the Moon transits Aquarius. With an Aquarius Moon, we seek intellectual stimulation and unusual or unconventional experiences.
The void Moon ends when the Moon enters Aquarius today at 5:19 AM EDT.
JULY 18
Retrograde Mercury forms a minor challenging aspect with Jupiter today, pointing to potentially impulsive decisions. Watch for exaggerated communications or news now. However, Venus forms a quintile to Uranus and trine to Neptune today, and we’re especially sensitive to others’ needs and wants, and desirous of harmony, love, beauty, and balance. We are generous, compassionate, open, and vulnerable. We prioritize spiritual and emotional concerns over material ones, but we’re also capable of producing something tangible from our creative efforts. These influences open up our senses and stimulate our compassion. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. A Mercury-Ceres trine is also in effect, and we’re ready to help and emotionally support our loved ones. This is a good time for both teaching and learning.
The Moon is void from 11:54 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Friday, July 19th, at 5:20 PM EDT.
JULY 19
Retrograde Mercury moves back into the sign of Cancer early today. Mercury will continue to retrograde until July 31st and then will re-enter Leo on August 11th. When Mercury is in Cancer, we rely more on our intuition to assess situations than usual. We may be reviewing or reassessing matters related to home, family, our personal lives, domestic issues, and our feelings now. This is an excellent period for getting in touch with our motivations, emotional needs, as well as what nurtures us and feeds our spirits. Our society doesn’t usually value emotional communication as much as rational approaches. However, now is the time to consider our more intimate or sympathetic natures and how these affect our decision-making processes. It’s a time of increased sensitivity and fine-tuned emotional radar. Retrograde Mercury periods tend to send us to the past for further or previously hidden information, and while in Cancer, this is especially the case. We might think of past events in new ways. The Moon continues to transit Aquarius and then enters Pisces at 5:20 PM EDT.
The void Moon ends when the Moon enters Pisces today at 5:20 PM EDT.
JULY 20
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces. The Pisces Moon is compassionate, sensitive, giving, and perceptive at its best and noncommittal or avoidant when challenged. We approach others with more compassion than usual. This is a strong time to forgive and release, particularly with a creative aspect between Venus and Jupiter also influencing the day. It can feel especially good to put our faith in someone or something now. However, Venus heads towards an opposition to Pluto, exact early tomorrow, and there can be intense emotions and attractions as the day advances. We may experience confrontations or events that bring complicated feelings and fears to a head. We may be making uncomfortable discoveries, and while some of these can be ultimately helpful, we may be pushing too far for answers right now. We should watch for manipulative behavior that can arise from insecurities or fear of betrayal.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Cancer Being more in touch with your emotional roots is a keynote of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. This has to do with feelings, but it’s more than that: it’s about making the things you feel and care about a reality. At some levels, this means a greater focus on family life – parents, children, relatives, the whole domestic scene. On a somewhat broader scale, you’re likely to find that houses and other real property take on greater significance for you. Nurturing is where it’s at in your life now: making things grow and taking care of them, planting seeds that will develop and survive far into the future – that’s what it’s all about.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Venus in Cancer Nurturing (or being nurtured), sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time – these are some of the hallmarks of the phase that now begins in your life. Romantic and social experiences, as well as artistic tastes, will show evidence of these factors.
Mars in Leo The thrill of the chase, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd: that’s what gets your juices flowing now that you’ve entered a new cycle. To be appreciated, to be admired (adored, even) – that’s what you crave. It’s a time of creativity, drama, and passion; a time when grabbing the spotlight and stealing the scene gives you a thrill. Is winning everything? No – but it’s way ahead of whatever comes in second!
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle.
