The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, April 3, 2017, at 2:39 PM EDT.
The First Quarter Moon occurs on Friday when the Sun in Aries forms a square with the Cancer Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon on March 27th is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 14 degrees and 12 minutes of Cancer square the Sun at 14 degrees and 12 minutes of Aries, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 12 to 16 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
The NEW MOON occurred on Monday, March 27, 2017, at 10:57 PM EDT.
On Monday night, a New Moon occurred in the sign of Aries. The New Moon in Aries is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Ram. It’s time to take action – try something new and innovative, and go at it with gusto and confidence; be assertive without being abrasive; take charge of our lives; start a brand new project; and discover our own personal courage.
This is a strong cycle under which to re-evaluate our relationship to ourselves. With this potent Aries energy, we have the chance to make significant changes in our lives. It’s time to make some solid yet realistic plans and to set the stage for reaping the rewards from our new beginnings, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and thus a New Moon in Aries is especially ripe with opportunity for new beginnings. We might consider acting on a constructive impulse and following a hunch or taking a risk. Aries learns through experience and action so that we might treat ourselves to a little adventure now. It’s also a good cycle from which to discover the benefits of expressing ourselves with authenticity – expressing ourselves as we are, without putting on airs. We might also find ways to learn how to rely on ourselves and to be happy about doing so – it will go a long way towards finding inner happiness when we know that we can be self-sufficient without blaming others for not helping us out. It’s a time to revitalize ourselves through experiences that break the routine and that involve doing something new and fresh.
This year, the New Moon occurs at a rather challenged time with its conjunction to retrograde Venus, a Saturn-Chiron square, and a Jupiter-Pluto square. The challenge is to break free from past conditioning, guilty feelings, and inflated expectations in either direction (positive and negative).

New Moon in Aries – March 27, 2017
This phase of the Moon occurred at 7 degrees and 37 minutes of Aries, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 4 to 12 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Aries; Mercury is in Taurus; Venus is in Aries until April 2nd, when it retrogrades into Pisces; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Aries from March 20-April 19. In Aries, the Sun is enthusiastic and spontaneous. We are motivated by the desire to conquer. We are more impulsive and have the urge to initiate. Aries is a sign that bounces back quickly–there is little shame with Aries. It is brave and pioneering, and somewhat innocent. We are direct and rather uncomplicated in our needs, but we can also be short-sighted and lack the desire to plan ahead.
Mercury is in Taurus from March 31-April 20 and then May 16-June 6. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, solid, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately under this influence, and our minds are oriented to the world of the five senses. We prefer the tried and true rather than new ways of thinking. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives, but we may be in danger of narrow, overly conservative, or rigid thinking.
Venus is in Aries from February 3-April 2 and then April 28-June 6. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now. Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to Aries. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
Venus is in Pisces from April 2-28. Pisces never sees the world in black-and-white terms. Rather, Pisces sees all the colors of the rainbow. With the goddess of love in Pisces, our love is all-embracing, we are able to forgive and understand, we are seducible and seductive, and we show compassion to our partners. Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach nevertheless, as there is a longing for something that is hard to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is allowing ourselves to be victimized or deluded, as well as evasiveness.
Mars is in Taurus from March 9-April 21. With this position, we are determined, stubborn, and resolute. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goal is longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Libra on September 9th, 2016, and will transit Libra until October 10, 2017. Read about Jupiter in Libra here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aries from February 3-April 2 and then April 28-June 6. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
Venus is in Pisces from April 2 -28. Like Aquarius, Pisces love is universal. However, Pisces draws no bounds in love. With Venus in Pisces, we have compassion (and perhaps attraction) for those who are left out, overlooked, or victimized. We are self-sacrificing, and we have a hard time setting up borders. The walls go down, we have a hard time saying no (especially if our compassion is engaged), but we are also prone to avoiding all that makes us feel uncomfortable. Wishful thinking is one expression of Venus in Pisces. We can too easily believe what we want to believe. People can be hard to pin down, and love is hard to define under this influence.
This week: Venus is retrograde again this week (until April 15th – in Aries until April 2nd and then in Pisces). This week, Venus parallel the Sun and contraparallel Jupiter on Monday and Tuesday brings a spirit of cooperation, pride, and forgiveness to our interactions. Retrograde Venus forms a square to Saturn on Saturday (both bodies are rather close to their stations), and we should be particularly cautious with our actions in relationships. This can be a strained or otherwise challenging time for affairs of the heart. This aspect forms again while Venus is direct on April 21st, and decisions made now may be revisited then.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aries Romance at the drop of a hat is part and parcel of the cycle you have just begun. Winning the hearts of others can be a challenge you’re eager to accept – and the thrill of the chase might be most of the fun. Is it the pursuit of happiness – or the happiness of pursuit?
Venus in Pisces A martyr complex, a love for the underdog, a search for your soul mate: such are the experiences associated with the new cycle you’re now just beginning. A yen for soul-stirring romance, a weakness for the weak, and a tendency to idealize people and relationships … very aesthetic, very other-worldly.
Venus semi-square Mars March 31-April 1. Tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging.
Venus parallel the Sun April 3-4. April 3-4. A strong desire for harmony and comfort fill us now. We may be moved to express our affections.
Venus contraparallel Jupiter April 4. We are able to make the best of a situation now. Watch for overextension.
Venus square Saturn April 7-8. Feeling unsatisfied, isolated, and unloved. Personal relationships may be strained as we express our affections cautiously and sparingly. If we believe we are not getting what we want in love, we attract negative situations and challenges in our relationships. This is not a good time to begin a new relationship–new ones begun now are likely to be stamped with themes of duty and restriction.
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, April 2nd, from 10:44 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Cancer at 2:28 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, April 4th, from 4:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Venus), until the Moon enters Leo at 6:14 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, April 6th, from 8:17 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Friday, April 7th, at 12:20 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar

This Week in Astrology Calendar – April 2 to 8, 2017
This Week’s Aspects
Mars quincunx Jupiter. We tend to take on too much—either expend too much energy or overestimate our capabilities—during this transit. Poor timing is possible now, as we may be out of synch with our instincts and natural rhythm.
Mars trine Pluto. This is a powerful aspect that helps us to focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want without stepping on others’ toes. We are willing to explore alternatives rather than simply relying on the tried and true. We are not afraid of a challenge and are willing to attempt to overcome obstacles. This is a strong energy for reworking or overhauling a project.
Sun opposition Jupiter. Conflicting urges with regards to what we think we should do and what we want to do can be frustrating now. There can be a tendency to go overboard and to indulge in extravagances. Watch for overestimating your capabilities now. Culminations or surprising changes in a project or ambition might occur now. The urge to grow and expand is strong, but we might overreach.
Venus square Saturn. Gaining what we want is challenging under this influence, due to negative attitudes and the tendency to need more than what is possible. Difficulties socializing with others stem from an increased sensitivity to rejection as well as stiffness with the affections. Emotional distance in relationships. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes.
Sun square Pluto. Insubordination and abuse of power. Impatience with rules. Compulsiveness. The urge to get to the bottom of matters is with us, but we are too insistent. Avoid beating a dead horse and attempting to force matters that should naturally take time to unfold. Circumstances now can push us to discover our own power–power that comes from a strong sense of self rather than superficial energy derived from manipulating people into doing what we want them to do. Events may occur now that highlight the need to trust.

What’s In Store By the Stars – Daily Astrology Trends
(as featured on our site’s main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)
APRIL 2
The Moon continues its transit of inquisitive Gemini until 2:28 PM EDT after which it transits caring Cancer. There may be a stronger sense that we must let something go so that we can move forward today. Retrograde Venus returns to the sign of Pisces this evening and Venus will stay in the sign until the 28th (Venus is only retrograde until the 15th, however). With the goddess of love in Pisces, our love is all-embracing, we are able to forgive and understand, we are seducible and seductive, and we show compassion for our partners. Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach, as there is a longing for something that is hard to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is evasiveness. Some issues we may want to watch for while Venus is retrograde in Pisces (until April 15th) are romanticizing the past (if it’s costly to the present) and attraction to complicated or excessively imbalanced relationships.
A void of course Moon occurs from 10:44 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Cancer at 2:28 PM EDT.
APRIL 3
The First Quarter Moon occurs today with the Aries Sun’s square to the Cancer Moon at 2:39 PM EDT. We may need to attend to personal or domestic problems before returning to personal plans. We might try to let any conflict that emerges today motivate us to get over a hump rather than allow it to drag us down. The Moon is in Cancer all day.
APRIL 4
The Moon continues its transit of Cancer until 6:14 PM EDT, and we’re focusing on our home or personal life more than usual. The Moon’s trine to retrograde Venus this afternoon can point to nostalgic feelings and a general ease or comfort with our affections. The Moon enters Leo at 6:14 PM, pulling us out of our shells as we seek out an audience or a pleasant companion. With today’s Mars-Jupiter quincunx, we’re inclined to have trouble making decisions, or we can find it challenging integrating one strong desire with another. Circumstances are such that we need to assess where we’ve been putting too much or too little of our energy. Poor timing is possible now, as we may be out of synch with our instincts and natural rhythm. Where we’ve been overdoing things becomes apparent this week (peaking on Friday when the Sun opposes Jupiter). Reshuffling our focus and prioritizing will be important now.
A void of course Moon occurs from 4:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Venus), until the Moon enters Leo at 6:14 PM EDT.
APRIL 5
Mars and Pluto form a trine at the tail-end of the day but this energy colors the whole day. This is a powerful aspect that helps us to focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want with a greater sense of our priorities. We are willing to explore alternatives rather than relying on the tried and true. We are not afraid of a challenge, and we are prepared to overcome obstacles. This is reliable energy for reworking or overhauling a project. We are especially effective, and possibly a little ruthless, when it comes to getting rid of what we don’t need. Our ability to take the lead is enhanced, and we can be very determined and focused. The Moon is in creative Leo all day and forms a trine with the Aries Sun, reinforcing confidence levels.
APRIL 6
Saturn stations as it turns retrograde today and will continue to travel in this apparent backward motion until August 25th. Saturn’s station can cast a rather somber or heavy tone over the week, and we’re more likely to make errors until we adjust to the shift. While Saturn is retrograde, we tend to review and question our responsibilities and commitments as opposed to dealing with them in the moment. There can be more than usual experiences of guilt and self-doubt as we internalize fears but also the chance to reassess our commitments. The Moon is in Leo all day, and while it may be too easy to stir up drama this morning with a Moon-Mars square this morning, the Moon’s trine to Uranus this afternoon and Saturn this evening stimulates our enterprising natures and helps us find creative and constructive channels for self-expression.
A void of course Moon occurs from 8:17 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Friday, April 7th, at 12:20 AM EDT.
APRIL 7
The Moon ends its transit of Leo shortly into the day — at 12:20 AM EDT when it enters Virgo. The Virgo Moon is helpful, dedicated, and detail-oriented. However, as moderate as a Virgo Moon strives to be, the Sun opposes Jupiter today, and the tendency to go over the top is strong. Recent excesses can come to light, demanding a change or shuffling of priorities. Conflicting urges regarding what we think we should do and what we want to do can be an issue now. There are two areas of life where we have a particular need to shine, grow, and improve, represented by the Sun and Jupiter, but these may seem to be in direct conflict with one another. Culminations or unexpected changes in a project or ambition might occur now, and this can be a time for reaping the rewards. The urge to grow and expand is strong. If we’ve been overreaching, it’s time to adjust our expectations.
The void Moon period ends at 12:20 AM EDT when the Moon enters Virgo.
APRIL 8
Rather challenging energy is with us today as Venus and Saturn form a square and so do the Sun and Pluto. Venus and Saturn will meet in a square again on the 21st after Venus turns direct on the 15th, thus extending the influence of this usually short transit. The Venus-Saturn square can pull up insecurities about our relationships, money, or state of comfort. Insecurities may cloud our judgment of worth and value for the time being. Gaining what we want can be complicated as our expectations can interfere — not feeling fully deserving may be an issue or we may be looking for more than is possible at the moment. Difficulties socializing can result from an increased sensitivity to rejection as well as stiffness with the affections. The Sun-Pluto square can push fears and buried matter to the surface. Putting faith and trust in others can be difficult. We can be withholding now if we’re feeling uncertain. The Moon is in Virgo all day, and pouring some of our energy into detail work may be helpful.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our “inner child”. It’s a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention–when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It’s a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
This Week’s Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends)
Sun in Aries A new sense of self, a more assertive personal style, a more dynamic approach to life: these are the hallmarks of the cycle that begins for you now. Doubts fade into the background, and reserve is more and more a thing of the past. It’s time for action; your destiny is in your hands, rather than set apart. Full speed ahead (“and damn the torpedoes”) is your motto now, for better or for worse!
Mercury in Taurus “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – that’s the key to the way you think at a time like this. Practical, utilitarian ideas are the ones that make the most sense now – putting them to good use is a focus for you. Material things are foremost on your mind in many respects: an emphasis on the real rather than the ideal.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Libra The ties that bind, the harmonious integration of opposites, the perfect balance: these are the keys to your greatest opportunities now. Marriage and other close personal relationships tend to offer bright prospects, and you have a deep yearning to experience the fulfillment they can bring.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
