The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, May 3rd, 2021, at 3:50 PM EDT.
On Monday afternoon, the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Moon in Aquarius. This Last Quarter Moon phase points to a small crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we arrive at a point where we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.
This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. It’s a time to consider our revelations, what they mean to us, and what can be done.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 13 degrees and 35 minutes of Aquarius square the Sun at 13 degrees and 35 minutes of Taurus, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 12 to 16 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Taurus; Mercury is in Taurus until May 3rd when it enters Gemini; Venus is in Taurus until the 8th when it enters Gemini; Mars is in Cancer.
The Sun is in Taurus from April 19 to May 20. In Taurus, the Sun is methodical, sensual, and receptive. The Sun in Taurus is most active when it is defending or resisting things! As the Sun moves through Taurus when plants take root, our determination and security needs are strong. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar, and values longevity. The shadow side of Taurus is possessiveness and bullheadedness.
Mercury is in Taurus from April 19 to May 3. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, solid, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately under this influence, and our minds are oriented to the world of the five senses. We prefer the tried and true rather than new ways of thinking. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives, but we may be in danger of narrow, overly conservative, or rigid thinking.
Mercury is in Gemini from May 3 to July 11. When Mercury is in Gemini, we are especially communicative, curious, and sociable. Mercury feels right at home in Gemini, one of the signs that it rules. We tend to take more pleasure in gaining a superficial knowledge of many subjects rather than dig deep into any one topic. We are especially astute when it comes to arguing or making a point. We are attracted to wordplays, puns, and negotiations. We are easily distracted.
Venus is in Taurus from April 14 to May 8. In Taurus, Venus is very sensual (naturally), content, and possessive. We seek security and value that which lasts. Our appetite for pleasure is strong. Taurus values the here and the now as well as the world of the five senses. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance are most important now. Holding on to someone we love is our tendency under Venus in Taurus. The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own. On the financial side, Venus in Taurus looks for high-quality, solid, practical, and long-lasting items. Holding on to our possessions is more likely now.
Venus is in Gemini from May 8 to June 2. In Gemini, we have a finger in every pie. Curiosity motivates us on romantic and social levels. “Variety is the spice of life” is the attitude now. We are sociable, communicative, and interested. We can be animated and fun but may also keep our distance on an emotional level. Attractions now may begin with words, as we tend to bond more readily on a mental level with Venus in Gemini. The shadow side of Gemini is fickleness.
Mars is in Cancer from April 23 to June 11. We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our mood of the moment.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Taurus from April 14 to May 8. In Taurus, Venus is usually quite content, but can be possessive.
Venus is in Gemini from May 8 to June 2. In Gemini, Venus is communicative, sociable but emotionally aloof, insatiably curious, and a little bit flighty. Fickleness with our affections is a strong possibility, but the desire for a meeting of minds is strong and the urge to socialize dominates.
Some detachment from our emotions is likely, which may be a breath of fresh air for some. The lines of communication open, although we may only scratch the surface of things. With this influence, love is playful and lighthearted. Fickleness is the shadow side of Venus in Gemini.
This week: With a Venus-Neptune sextile on Sunday, we treat lovers with more tenderness or we see them in a more sensitive, obliging light. We’re particularly open to romance, and we can be quite sensitive to others’ needs and backstories. Seeing the very best in people eases our interactions, taking the pressure off in personal relationships.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we can feel insecure about our affections or relationships, but as we explore our issues, we can get to a nice new level of understanding, both of ourselves and our loved ones. We seek a deep love in which we can merge souls and personalities with our lover. We are quite devoted to our partners, and we seek such devotion in return. Transits Thursday support intimacy, understanding, and depth in our connections.
On Friday and Saturday, we may be going overboard as we seek more meaning or new horizons. Watch for overcommitting or overstating.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Taurus A love of music, an appreciation for sensual pleasures and others of the finer things in life – such are the signs of the cycle which has begun for you. This is aesthetic and artistic to be sure, but it is also practical and materialistic: you develop a keen appreciation for the value of things, including the money it takes to buy them.
Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes naturally now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. (The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular.) A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Venus contra-parallel Saturn April 30. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most. Some pulling back can occur in relationships now, as we are more self-conscious and cautious with our affections.
Venus sextile Neptune May 2. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus semi-square Chiron May 5. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus trine Pluto May 5-6. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships are intense and deep, but not draining.
Venus square Jupiter May 7-8. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships. As well, take what your partner says with a grain of salt. There is no malicious intent involved, but feelings of elation can cloud our judgment, and we can promise more than we can deliver.
Venus contraparallel Pluto May 16. Romantic intensity, a feeling of fatedness, possessiveness, fear of betrayal, and insecurity in relationships. Questions of trust can emerge in relationships. Looking for a commitment.
Venus conjunct North Node May 16-17. This is a time for reaching out to others and making connections that further our growth. Cooperation brings rewards. There could be a feeling that we’re lucky in love or in our social life now.
Venus sextile Chiron May 17-18. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
Venus sesquiquadrature Pluto May 17-18. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus trine Saturn May 19. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism and maturity in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor, and have much potential to last.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, May 2nd, from 10:38 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 3:31 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, May 4th, from 8:05 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Pisces at 10:09 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, May 7th, from 3:37 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries at 7:53 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury trine Pluto. Our mental faculties are attuned to otherworldly impressions, offering us increased insight, psychological understanding and awareness, and focused attention.
Venus sextile Neptune. We are more imaginative and attuned to the world of beauty and romance today. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level is possible now.
Mercury square Jupiter. Information overload is possible today. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. This is an unfavorable transit for travel. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate.
Sun square Saturn. As we face obstacles to our goals, we begin to see the tools with which we have to overcome them. A heavy dose of realism seems forced upon us under this influence, but our efforts to measure up to expectations can ultimately increase our confidence in our ability to be responsible for ourselves. This influence is a somber one.
Venus semi-square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy are possible now as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships with others. We might have a hard time learning from one another as a result.
Venus trine Pluto. An excellent time for finances and for relationships, all things equal. Our feelings are intense and impassioned, but not in an offensive or destructive way. The need to share on deeper levels is strong now. A spiritual regeneration through love is possible.
Venus square Jupiter. Feelings of elation in love or with regards to the pleasures of life can lead us to overdo, overindulge, overspend, and overstate our feelings. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. We may also feel lazy and we are inclined to procrastinate.

MAY 2
Mercury perfects its trine to Pluto this morning, and we’re in good shape for profound insight, psychological understanding, awareness, and focused attention. We seek the hidden message and draw upon our powers of persuasion. The Moon continues its transit of responsible Capricorn until 3:31 PM EDT, after which it transits fair-minded Aquarius. This evening, Venus forms a sextile to Neptune, encouraging us to find the best in people and our relationships or pleasures. We approach one another more gently and sensitively than usual with this transit. We are inclined to see the spiritual dimensions of our relationships and to treat others with increased compassion. This influence encourages us to open up and embrace loving, non-possessive feelings.
The void Moon occurs from 10:38 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 3:31 PM EDT.
MAY 3
With Mercury’s square to Jupiter this morning, we can feel rushed to make a decision when it’s better to wait. Our ideas are grand, but we may jump to conclusions or speak on a matter too soon. A Sun-Saturn square also occurs now, and its energies are restrictive rather than expansive. Our commitment to others can temporarily interfere with personal comfort levels or relationships. We face obstacles, but this puts us in the position to recognize our ability to overcome them. This can be a time to face reality or the practical side of a situation and assume more responsibility. Our efforts to measure up to expectations can ultimately boost our sense of self-reliance. It’s best to consider what’s best for us in the long term, and it may mean forgoing or limiting something in the present for better results in the future. The Last Quarter Moon occurs this afternoon with the Aquarius Moon’s square to the Sun–another signal to review and sort rather than push something new. Until the New Moon on the 11th, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary. We’re sorting out what does and doesn’t work for us. Mercury enters Gemini today, where it will transit for a longer time than usual–until July 11th–due to an upcoming retrograde cycle (from May 29th to June 22nd). Mercury rules Gemini and is exceptionally comfortable in the sign. This transit piques our curiosity. We’re spirited when it comes to reaching out to others, learning, and sharing.
MAY 4
The Moon spends much of the day (until 10:09 PM EDT) in Aquarius, bringing friendly, progressive, and intelligent energy to our lives. The Moon aligns with Jupiter this evening, and we’re embracing our unique side or social life and reaching for our joy, seeking to grow, expand, and improve. Our imagination and idealism are active. The desire to connect and make others happy is strong. The Moon heads into the sign of Pisces at 10:09 PM, bringing on gentle, creative, and compassionate energy. We’re heading to a Jupiter-Uranus quintile, exact early tomorrow. This is the first of three (the next two will occur in July and December). With this longer-term influence, we notice and appreciate the more unique elements of situations, people, and projects.
The void Moon occurs from 8:05 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Pisces at 10:09 PM EDT.
MAY 5
Our timing is good with business and personal pursuits as we’re inclined to strategize and prepare well with a Mars-Saturn biquintile this morning. However, with a Venus-Chiron semi-square this afternoon, we tend to focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships. This approach can work well for us only if we make a concerted effort to learn from the differences. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces, awakening our need for spiritual refreshment or an escape of sorts. Ideally, this is a time for decompressing, winding down, and tapping into our intuition. We might put our hearts and faith into a cause, loved ones, or a pet project. We are generous with our time and energy.
MAY 6
Venus forms a trine to Pluto this morning, and the need to share or enjoy life on more profound levels dominates. This influence helps us get in touch with what we most love and cherish. We might narrow our focus to our advantage under this influence. We seek to grow, improve, or develop our attachments. Recognizing the value of patience, we’re more strategic, and we’re likely to gain new insight into business and personal relationships.
Mercury forms a creative quintile to Neptune this afternoon, and along with the Pisces Moon, we’re especially idealistic, spiritually aware, and sensitive. These influences encourage us to get in touch with our imaginative, compassionate side. Boundaries dissolve, and we are disinclined to make definite or firm plans, conclusions, and decisions, preferring to allow for possibilities. We might avoid confrontations or challenging situations now. It’s a good time to dream, inspire, and seek inspiration.
MAY 7
The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until 7:53 AM EDT when it enters Aries. The Aries Moon is bold and direct, and it’s particularly impulsive tonight as it approaches a square to Mars. We want to forge new paths with this transit, and we’re quick to let go of the past. If the effect we make is not exciting enough right away, we might quickly drop a project or plan for another. It’s a good time to connect with our initiative. The Aries Moon harmonizes with Mercury this evening, helping us find common ground and opening up the lines of communication.
The void Moon occurs from 3:37 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries at 7:53 AM EDT.
MAY 8
Venus enters Gemini tonight, but before it leaves Taurus, it forms a square to Jupiter this morning. The Venus-Jupiter square can point to much enthusiasm and some extravagance. This transit can have the effect of exaggerating or expanding our affections, and this state of mind can lead to overdoing, overstating our feelings, and overindulging. However, if we keep this in check, it can be a useful time for entertaining new ideas and approaches related to pleasure, money, and love. This influence generates friendly but not very disciplined energy. Especially as it occurs with both planets in the last degree of a sign, decisions can be too rushed for our own good today. Venus moves into the sign of Gemini tonight, and it will continue its transit until June 2nd. With Venus in Gemini, curiosity motivates us on romantic and social levels. We seek variety, and we’re particularly sociable, engaged, interested, and communicative. We have a strong sense of fun but may also maintain some distance on an emotional level. Attractions now may begin with words, as we tend to bond more readily on a mental level with Venus in Gemini, but we can also be rather fickle with our affections and pleasures. The Moon spends the day in spontaneous, bold Aries.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Taurus The cycle now dawning in your life emphasizes stability, substance, practicality, and the concept of value – value in the material as well as psycho-spiritual sense. This marks a time of building to last, of appreciating the substantial rather than ephemeral. Consolidating past gains rather than focusing on radical new departures is likely to be a major theme for you during this cycle. Appreciating the finer things of life is another hallmark of this phase, which marks a time when you should be concentrating on “smelling the roses” rather than passing them by in such a hurry.
Mercury in Taurus “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – that’s the key to the way you think at a time like this. Practical, utilitarian ideas are the ones that make the most sense now – putting them to good use is a focus for you. Material things are foremost on your mind in many respects: an emphasis on the real rather than the ideal.
Mercury in Gemini A walking encyclopedia, a yen to know a little bit about everything (and everyone): these are the icons of the cycle you have just begun. Talking, writing, keeping a finger on the pulse of all that’s happening … this is a time of study and learning, a cycle of mental challenge, curiosity, and social/intellectual growth. Such things are an end in themselves rather than a means to any other end.
Mars in Cancer Defensive, aren’t we? With this new cycle getting underway, protecting and preserving you and yours takes on a higher than usual priority. A sensitivity to the needs and wants of others and an appreciation for their frailties (as well as your own) makes you more cautious and conservative … you pick your battles with care.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
