The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, at 10:32 PM EDT.
On Tuesday night, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Aries forms a square with the Moon in Cancer. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.
If we began a project or initiative around the New Moon, it might now get off the ground and may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 8 degrees and 9 minutes of Cancer square the Sun at the same degree of Aries, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 6 to 10 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, and Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Aries; Mercury is in Aries; Venus is in Taurus; Mars is in Cancer.
The Sun is in Aries from March 20-April 20. In Aries, the Sun is enthusiastic and spontaneous. We are motivated by the desire to conquer. We are more impulsive and have the urge to initiate, innovate, and come first.
Aries is a sign that bounces back quickly–there is little in the way of shame with Aries. It is brave and pioneering, and somewhat innocent. We are direct and rather uncomplicated in our needs, but we can also be short-sighted and lack the desire to plan ahead.
Mercury is in Aries from March 19-April 3. When Mercury is in Aries, we are less concerned with objective viewpoints and explanations, and more concerned with reaching a decision…quickly! Our thoughts and ideas are pioneering, and we tend to speak more spontaneously and directly with the planet of communication in bold and assertive Aries.
There can be quick, possibly impatient or hurried, decisions during this cycle, and our responses are similar: quick and perhaps defensive or combative. We value independent thought, and we can be mentally competitive. executive decisions. We prefer to learn through personal experience, not instruction.
Venus is in Taurus from March 16-April 11. In Taurus, Venus is naturally very sensual, content, and possessive. We seek security and value those things that are long-lasting. Our appetite for pleasure is strong.
The sign of Taurus values the here and now and the world of the five senses. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance figure strongly during the Venus-in-Taurus cycle. Holding on to someone or something we love is our tendency under this influence.
The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own.
On the financial side, Venus in Taurus looks for high-quality, solid, practical, and long-lasting items. Holding on to our possessions is more likely now. With art, tastes, and pleasures, we prefer things that are earthy, natural, and grounded. We can be somewhat indulgent at this time. Uncertainty bothers us more than usual–we favor stability over excitement in love and pleasure.
Mars is in Cancer from March 25-May 20. We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want while Mars transits Cancer. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our current mood of the moment.
We’re also very intuitive and can be moved to take action to bring peace or comfort and safety to our lives during this period. We go to bat for our loved ones. In fact, we’re fiercely protective. It’s a powerful period for putting ego matters aside so that we can push our plans forward. Inner satisfaction and love are generally more important to us than outer achievements at this time. Personal and domestic goals are our priority during this phase.
Jupiter is in Aries.
Jupiter was in Aries from May 10 to October 28, 2022 before it retreated into Pisces. This was part one of two, with the second and final part in progress, occurring from December 20, 2022, to May 16, 2023. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Aries.
Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Taurus from March 16-April 11. In Taurus, Venus is usually quite content, but can be possessive. We seek security and value that which lasts. Our appetite for pleasure is strong. Taurus values the here and the now as well as the world of the five senses. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance are most important now. Holding on to someone we love is our tendency under Venus in Taurus. The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own.
This week: On Monday to Thursday, we’re ready to explore, experiment, and change things up. The need for a fresh start is with us. We want to move forward fearlessly into the future. Watch for impulsiveness and impatience on Friday and Saturday. Someone may be pushy or crude when we crave something more refined or subtle, or they’re being subtle when we crave a more straightforward approach.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Taurus A love of music, an appreciation for sensual pleasures and others of the finer things in life – such are the signs of the cycle which has begun for you. This is aesthetic and artistic to be sure, but it is also practical and materialistic: you develop a keen appreciation for the value of things, including the money it takes to buy them.
Venus semi-square Neptune March 25. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus parallel Uranus March 27. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
Venus conjunct Uranus March 30. We have a taste for the unusual and the avant garde. We are itching for a change. What makes a person unique is more attractive under this influence. Excitement and newness are valued over permanence in social relationships. Freedom is more important than intimacy just now. We lose our fears of taking risks in love and social situations. Romantic infatuations, gossip, unanticipated opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement.
Venus semi-square Mars March 31-April 1. Tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging.
Venus sextile Neptune April 6-7. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, March 27th, from 9:40 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Cancer the next day, Tuesday, March 28th, at 6:23 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, March 30th, from 9:46 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Neptune), until the Moon enters Leo at 6:32 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week on Thursday, March 30th, from approximately 3:30 AM to 9:40 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Cancer.
Another window occurs from Saturday, April 1st, at approximately 9:10 AM EDT to Sunday, April 2nd, at approximately 2:00 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Leo.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury conjunct Chiron. Our intuitive understanding increases. This influence can stimulate us to open our minds and to learn from circumstances and from others. Sudden awareness spurs us to grow and improve. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general. There may be some hyper-sensitivity to what is communicated now, however.
Mercury semi-square Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks we thought we had finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hyper-sensitivity and criticism–these are all potentials now. The energy is best used for focusing on fixing errors rather than harping on how irritating they are!
Mercury conjunct Jupiter. We can visualize in broader terms and see the “big picture” now. Travel is favored, all things equal. We are optimistic, which can help us attract positive circumstances. This is a good time to submit ideas, applications, and so forth, all things equal. This is a time of thinking on a grand scale and long-range planning. Details and mundane affairs do not interest us as much as the big picture does. We are prone to exaggerating the facts due to enthusiasm. Expressing ourselves verbally comes easily, and public relations and negotiations run especially smoothly. This is a time for making long-range plans, seeing the big picture, and thinking about what is really important to us in the long run.
Mars semi-square Uranus. A tendency to take risks, to feel restless, to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to change our goals or actions.
Mars trine Saturn. Work takes on definite shape, and we can see results from our efforts. This gives us a sense of responsibility and a feeling of directedness and purposefulness. This is a good time to temper our energy and to exercise better judgment. A good time to get and feel organized. Seniority is favored now. Traditional methods work, and thoroughness brings rewards.
Venus conjunct Uranus. We have a taste for the unusual and the avant garde. We are itching for a change. What makes a person unique is more attractive under this influence. Excitement and newness are valued over permanence in social relationships. We lose our fears of taking risks in love and social situations. Romantic infatuations, gossip, unanticipated opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement.
Venus semi-square Mars. Potential tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging. Be wary of making impulse purchases. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating and invigorating.

MARCH 26
The Moon spends the day in Gemini, stirring our curiosity and inspiring us to connect. Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, aligns with Chiron today, and while revelations can be messy, this influence opens us up to learning and healing. It encourages us to open our minds and learn from one another and our circumstances. Sudden awareness spurs us to grow and improve. We are incredibly open to new ways of looking at problems or life, in general, and we’re more sensitive than usual to communication nuances.
MARCH 27
Mercury forms a semi-square with Saturn today, pointing to potential delays or miscommunications. We may need to manage some inconveniences in our transit or communications. Drawing on patience is essential, as minor edits can ultimately benefit us. However, Mercury heads toward an alignment with Jupiter, exact very early tomorrow, and verbal expression flows smoothly as the day advances. It can be an excellent time to come to agreements and resolutions. We see the big picture and are more likely to factor in what’s meaningful to us. We’re inclined to talk and think about our dreams, plans, friends, and connections, opening up and enjoying the process. We should watch for overstating and promising more than we can fulfill, but it remains an excellent time to enjoy good humor and positive vibes. This transit inspires optimism–we’re finding reasons to feel hopeful. Our opinions are strong. It’s a good time to stretch our thinking to include new possibilities.
The Moon is void from 9:40 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Cancer the next day, Tuesday, March 28th, at 6:23 AM EDT.
MARCH 28
The Cancer Moon is warm, comfortable, and protective from 6:23 AM EDT. However, a Mars-Uranus semi-square adds an impatient edge to the day’s energies. We may seek to dominate or assert our independence if we feel trapped, restricted, or otherwise limited. We should watch for impulsive moves but also seek creative, inventive ways to get ahead. Fortunately, a Mercury-Mars quintile is incredibly clever energy for figuring things out and solving problems. The First Quarter Moon occurs tonight when the Moon in Cancer forms a square to the Aries Sun. A crisis theme surrounds any quarter Moon phase as we feel compelled to take action. We can face obstacles now, and ideally, they’re motivating.
The Moon continues its void period until it enters Cancer today at 6:23 AM EDT.
MARCH 29
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Cancer, and we tend to seek refuge in familiar places and faces. This transit stirs our need to connect with loved ones and feel a sense of belonging or safety. The Moon’s harmony with Venus and Uranus helps us release and let go, boosting our capacity to embrace different ideas and methods. New techniques or options can emerge, and while the Cancer Moon is traditional and sentimental, we’re not against some minor changes or novel approaches. Later today, the Moon forms a square with Jupiter, and while the overriding need is to detox and calm, there can be tension resulting from conflicts between desires for independence and needs for nurturing. Patience is necessary now.
MARCH 30
Today’s Mars-Saturn trine favors discipline, moderation, tradition, and realism. This transit stimulates productivity, attention to traditional or tried and true methods, pacing ourselves, and temperance. We feel more directed and purposeful and tend to be thorough in our efforts.
On the other hand, Venus aligns with Uranus this evening, encouraging us to let go of rigidity! The need to express ourselves freely and openly comes on strongly. It’s a time when we go a little off-script socially. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we’re itching for a change! Connecting with this desire can help us steer and navigate better. For the time being, we value stimulation and newness over permanence. We lose our fear of taking risks in love, social situations, and with pleasure. There can be infatuations, whims, gossip, and unexpected opportunities socially or financially. We need more self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement. At the same time, the Moon moves from Cancer to bold Leo, and we’re opening up.
The Moon is void from 9:46 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Neptune), until the Moon enters Leo at 6:32 PM EDT.
MARCH 31
The Moon spends the day in outgoing, competitive, and loving Leo, and its trine to the Sun can produce free-spirited but cooperative energy. The day shapes up to be playful and expressive. However, we’re approaching a Venus-Mars semi-square, exact early tomorrow, that spotlights differences in our approaches, desires, and needs, resulting in strained relationship dynamics. It’s best to watch for stirring the pot, temperamentality, or impulsive moves later today.
APRIL 1
The Moon is in joyful Leo all day, and we’re happy to share ourselves with others in heartfelt ways. We’re generally confident and prepared to take on whatever comes our way. A creative aspect between the Sun and Pluto points to gaining an advantage or edge through design, solving problems, and willingness to challenge ourselves today. We’re ready to put effort and extra work into pursuing our desires.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Aries A new sense of self, a more assertive personal style, a more dynamic approach to life: these are the hallmarks of the cycle that begins for you now. Doubts fade into the background, and reserve is more and more a thing of the past. It’s time for action; your destiny is in your hands, rather than set apart. Full speed ahead (“and damn the torpedoes”) is your motto now, for better or for worse!
Mercury in Aries New ideas and an independent or pioneering mental orientation take on more importance in your life at this time. Teaching, learning, communicating, and social contact have a way of outlining new directions in your life now, and there is much activity and involvement with these kinds of issues.
Mars in Cancer Defensive, aren’t we? With this new cycle getting underway, protecting and preserving you and yours takes on a higher than usual priority. A sensitivity to the needs and wants of others and an appreciation for their frailties (as well as your own) makes you more cautious and conservative … you pick your battles with care.
Jupiter in Aries Faith in yourself and your future is emphasized as you begin this new cycle. A feeling that anything is possible leads to new ventures, a clean break from the past. At its best, this is a very positive and optimistic new cycle in your life, but at times, overconfidence can border on foolhardy bravery. Don’t burn your bridges behind you!
Saturn in Pisces Making peace with the past, coming to terms with karmic debts: these are some of the issues that confront you as a new phase begins in your life. Failure to face these things can cause setbacks and put obstacles in your path. Learn to look beyond the narrowly personal and selfish or you’ll get in over your head.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Aquarius Reform, revolution, a rejection of the past and a focus on the future: these are the signatures of the new phase now beginning in your life. Tradition becomes irrelevant, and the conventional wisdom is revealed as dogma or outright nonsense – and what’s the difference, really? Radical changes in all things social and intellectual.
