The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, July 17th, 2021, at 6:10 AM EDT.
On Saturday morning, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Cancer forms a square with the Moon in Libra. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 25 degrees and 4 minutes of Libra square the Sun at 25 degrees and 4 minutes of Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 23 to 27 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
This week: The Sun is in Cancer; Mercury is in Gemini to the 11th, when Mercury enters Cancer; Venus is in Leo; Mars is in Leo.
The Sun is in Cancer from June 21 to July 22. We are self-protective and insular under this influence. Our attention turns to our nest–our families, homes, and anything that makes us feel “at home”, safe, and secure. Nurturing and taking care of our loved ones and our pet projects comes into focus. Emotions run deep. We are more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon while the Sun is in Cancer.
Mercury is in Gemini from May 3 to July 11. When Mercury is in Gemini, we are especially communicative, curious, and sociable. Mercury feels right at home in Gemini, one of the signs that it rules. We tend to take more pleasure in gaining a superficial knowledge of many subjects rather than dig deep into any one topic. We are especially astute when it comes to arguing or making a point. We are attracted to wordplays, puns, and negotiations. We are easily distracted.
Mercury is in Cancer from July 11-27. When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Venus is in Leo from June 27 to July 21. Love is magnificent and grand. We take pride in love, and we are generous with our money as well. This is a warmhearted, teasing, expressive, proud, and extravagant placement for Venus. Love is a bit of a game–a game that is perpetual, as Venus in Leo is forever stuck in the romance stage of a relationship. We feed on attention, acknowledgement, validation, and adoration. Venus in Leo loves to be adored, pampered, and admired. Pride and passion are hallmarks of this cycle. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
Mars is in Leo from June 11 to July 29. In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have grand goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit. Jupiter is in Pisces from May 13th to July 28th, when it retreats into Aquarius. Jupiter returns to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. There will be another part to this 3-part act in 2022! Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Leo from June 27 to July 21. Love is magnificent and grand!
This week: On Monday and Tuesday, Venus and Mars come together in the romantic, affectionate, and creative sign of Leo–a powerful combination! It’s a passionate, warm, expressive, and lively energy. We’re motivated to make something special, connect, create, and mingle. We’re willing to try something new and respond well to friendly competition on Wednesday and Thursday. However, later on Thursday to Saturday, it’s not quite so straightforward to make decisions in love.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Venus square Uranus July 8. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus conjunct Mars July 12-13. This is a passionate, warm, expressive, lively and sexy energy. We are now able to take the initiative to achieve harmony and sexual fulfillment. This influence brings satisfaction to the feelings. Our creativity and desire to make something beautiful is stimulated now. We are more able to combine warmth with energy. Social relations are impassioned, and perhaps demanding or extreme. In some cases this impulsive energy generates “love at first sight” scenarios or erotic interludes. Team work is more successful now. Some level of competition is present in our interactions, but it’s likely of a pleasurable and gently challenging kind. Impulsive purchases are possible.
Venus parallel Uranus July 14-15. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
Venus parallel Mars July 15. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.
Venus quincunx Neptune July 15-16. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming blinded by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.
Venus quincunx Pluto July 17-18. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
Venus semi-square Mercury July 17-18. Communications between lovers are superficial and unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. Superficiality in romantic expression may exist now.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, July 12th, from 8:29 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Tuesday, July 13th, at 4:31 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, July 15th, from 2:46 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 10:32 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, July 17th, from 7:04 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 2:39 PM EDT.
July 2021:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon on the 9th, which is generally unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details). The Moon is waxing after the New Moon on the 9th, which is usually favored for new beginnings, but again with exceptions.
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week on Monday, the 12th, from approximately 12:15 AM to 8:25 AM EDT, although it’s not a classic window. A window occurs from Wednesday, the 14th, from approximately 11:20 PM, until Thursday, the 15th, at approximately 2:45 AM.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury semi-square Uranus. We can have flashes of insight, but tend to be scatterbrained. Our ideas and communications may not be well-received because they don’t seem to others to carry weight. Our minds are not peaceful or harmonious under this influence, and irritable tempers, sarcastic speech, and dogmatism are negative expressions of this energy.
Mercury trine Jupiter. Looking for meaning in mundane affairs, positive thinking, insights, cooperation–these are themes of this influence. Our ideas are big and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. We prefer to think about the big picture rather than becoming bogged down with details. This transit favors short trips, writing, teaching, studying, submitting applications and forms, accurate diagnoses and observations (all things equal).
Venus conjunct Mars. This transit generates a passionate, warm, expressive, lively, and sexy energy. We may also feel compelled to do something creative or artistic. In some cases this impulsive energy generates “love at first sight” scenarios or erotic interludes. The erotic impulses of love, desire, and sexuality are a highly charged focus of our attention. Expressing our passions in harmonious and pleasing ways is the focus. This is a time of balancing and integrating yin and yang energies within ourselves. We have a chance to express our needs, passions, and desires now in effective ways. Venus is diplomatic, gentle, romantic, and sensitive, while Mars is more forceful, sexual, and assertive. Venus can act to soften Mars’ aggressiveness, or Mars can make Venus’ romantic impulses more forceful and pressing. Team work is more successful now. Some level of competition is present in our interactions, but it’s likely of a pleasurable and gently challenging kind. Impulsive purchases are possible.
Sun trine Neptune. We’re at the right place at the right time, probably because our hunches are more likely to be correct and we are “tuned in”. We are inspired, and charitable acts now will serve to lift our spirits like no drug can. A good time for self-improvement programs or efforts. Instinctual judgment is enhanced under this influence. We are able to see matters, and people, from a different perspective–one that allows for, and even finds beauty in, differences.
Mercury semi-square Mars. We are quick-witted and ready to argue under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions, as we feel pressure to get things done quickly. We are inclined to be snappy and irritable, and we may too easily interrupt others rather than listen. Conflicts of interest are likely.
Venus quincunx Neptune. Under this influence, we are apt to see what we want to see, rather than what actually is, when it comes to both financial affairs and affairs of the heart. Still, we tend to doubt our perceptions of perfection. The end result is a feeling of insecurity on romantic and social levels. Avoid making large purchases and commitments at this time.
Sun opposition Pluto. The Sun in dynamic aspect to Pluto suggests willfulness and dealing with issues of power and competition. We may feel on edge, volatile, or even threatened. In extreme cases, infantile rage is possible. There is an inner drama taking place now, and a feeling that external circumstances are undermining our own feeling of powerfulness. In the process, we may be able to get in touch with our internal motivations. A tendency to want to control our lives through some form of manipulation is strong during this influence. Meeting with obstacles in our paths, however, can force us into the position of using all of our resources to fight back, and we can discover resources we never knew we had in the process.

JULY 11
The Moon spends the day in determined, proud Leo. The Leo Moon’s square to Uranus suggests some stubborn sticking to our methods, and its opposition to Saturn points to feeling blocked. Rules and limitations are harder to take today, but no boundaries can feel too chaotic, and our challenge is to find a balance. Adjusting our plans may be in order. Differences in opinion can elevate our frustrations and may feel more problematic than usual, blocking progress or leading to delays. Mercury enters Cancer today, and it will transit the sign until July 27th. We think, speak, and take in information on a deep, intuitive level during this cycle. Our emotions color our thoughts more than usual, we communicate with more sensitivity, meaning, and care, and our memory is retentive during this cycle. It’s a time for absorbing information about the emotional background or atmosphere and setting. We’re picking up on moods and tones in addition to facts, and we tend to need intimate settings to express ourselves fully.
JULY 12
The Moon spends the day in the sign of demonstrative Leo. The Leo Moon aligns with Venus and Mars in the sign this morning as these bodies head toward a conjunction. We’re spirited, affectionate, and creative under these influences. Today’s Mercury-Jupiter trine boosts our confidence and faith. Through conversations, a positive outlook or hopefulness can emerge–we have more trust in the future. We seek a little extra meaning to our projects and experiences, and we can benefit from big-picture thinking. Our ideas are big, and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. Curiosity grows.
The void Moon occurs from 8:29 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Tuesday, July 13th, at 4:31 AM EDT.
JULY 13
Venus and Mars, both in Leo, align today, and we’re passionate and creative. Our desires feel urgent, and our patience can be short. Social relations are competitive and vibrant and perhaps demanding or extreme in some cases. There can be a strong impulse to start something new or make something creative. Venus is diplomatic, gentle, romantic, and sensitive, while Mars is more forceful, sexual, and assertive. Venus can soften Mars’ aggressiveness, or Mars can make Venus’ romantic impulses more forceful and pressing. This transit heightens our feelings, which can feel pressing now, and generates warm, expressive, and lively energy. In some cases, this impulsive energy produces “love at first sight” scenarios. We can be spontaneous, less inhibited, and perhaps a bit rash with our relationships, pleasure, or money. The Moon continues its transit of Leo only until 4:31 AM EDT when it enters Virgo. The Virgo Moon is devoted, helpful, detail-oriented, and analytical.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Virgo today at 4:31 AM EDT.
JULY 14
The Moon spends the day in the adaptable and intelligent sign of Virgo, and its harmony with Uranus this morning boosts our capacity to embrace new ideas and methods. New techniques or options can emerge. We’re more focused on the details of our lives than the larger goals with a Virgo Moon, giving us the chance to manage essential tasks that help fortify and support our endeavors. The Moon in Virgo is particular and craves order. However, as the day advances, the Sun heads into harmony with Neptune, encouraging us to let go and let things flow. This transit introduces a fluid, graceful theme to the second half of the day.
JULY 15
With the Sun and Neptune forming a trine this morning, we readily access our intuition, and we can be moved to help, support, or give of ourselves. We would do well to de-emphasize some of our material concerns or interests, at least temporarily. We see people and life itself from a different perspective — one that not only allows for but finds beauty in differences. However, we can lose some of our patience as the day advances with a Mercury-Mars semi-square, producing some tension that might fuel our motivation to make a change. We can quickly come up with ideas or retorts, but we can be a little nervous and snappy under this influence. If we allow ourselves to succumb to the pressure to get things done quickly, we may be working under stressful or hectic conditions. It’s not an ideal transit for listening to one another. Chiron stations and turns retrograde today, and will remain retrograde until December 19th. This cycle is a good time for introspection. We might reassess mental and physical health programs in our lives during this period. The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until it enters Libra at 10:32 AM EDT. The Libra Moon is gracious, polite, and fair.
The void Moon occurs from 2:46 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 10:32 AM EDT.
JULY 16
With a Venus-Neptune quincunx early today, we might struggle between wanting to see things realistically and preferring to nurture a fantasy or look the other way. Under this influence, there can be some insecurity or doubts about others or our own feelings and perceptions. The Moon spends the day in Libra, and we seek the other side to a story. We see things from a different perspective, which comes more easily as the day advances, and we give our relationships their due attention. With a Pluto-Ceres trine today, we could enjoy a breakthrough in a love relationship or a more profound understanding/connection with someone we care about. Our attachments are pronounced now, and we may seek deeper, richer contact. There could be a strong sense that we must let something go to move forward.
JULY 17
The Moon continues its transit of Libra until 2:39 PM EDT, and the First Quarter Moon occurs at 6:11 AM when the Cancer Sun forms a square with the Libra Moon. We may become aware of obstacles related to a plan or project. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth. We’re competitive and ambitious, stirred into action. The Scorpio Moon from 2:39 PM forward is intense, tenacious, tough, and perceptive. Further, the Sun opposes Pluto today, pulling up deeper, darker, or buried and unresolved matter. Through feelings, relationships, and events, we can more clearly see areas of life where we’ve been holding onto something too tightly or giving away our personal power. This can feel uncomfortable and can be disruptive, but it can also heighten self-awareness. Outside forces remind us of our need to take charge of our lives, but shortcuts to gaining control are unlikely to work out. Instead, we should formulate strategies for managing our fears or worries. A tricky or buried issue might now reach a head. We may feel on edge, volatile, or defensive. There can be an inner drama, or external circumstances seem to undermine our perception of powerfulness. We may experience a battle within ourselves between light and dark forces, or we can meet this theme through others.
The void Moon occurs from 7:04 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 2:39 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Cancer Being more in touch with your emotional roots is a keynote of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. This has to do with feelings, but it’s more than that: it’s about making the things you feel and care about a reality. At some levels, this means a greater focus on family life – parents, children, relatives, the whole domestic scene. On a somewhat broader scale, you’re likely to find that houses and other real property take on greater significance for you. Nurturing is where it’s at in your life now: making things grow and taking care of them, planting seeds that will develop and survive far into the future – that’s what it’s all about.
Mercury in Gemini A walking encyclopedia, a yen to know a little bit about everything (and everyone): these are the icons of the cycle you have just begun. Talking, writing, keeping a finger on the pulse of all that’s happening … this is a time of study and learning, a cycle of mental challenge, curiosity, and social/intellectual growth. Such things are an end in themselves rather than a means to any other end.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Mars in Leo The thrill of the chase, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd: that’s what gets your juices flowing now that you’ve entered a new cycle. To be appreciated, to be admired (adored, even) – that’s what you crave. It’s a time of creativity, drama, and passion; a time when grabbing the spotlight and stealing the scene gives you a thrill. Is winning everything? No – but it’s way ahead of whatever comes in second!
Jupiter in Pisces Mysticism, sensitivity to the needs of others, and an awareness of karma (the link between the present and the past): these are your paths to spiritual growth now. Addressing these issues brings you gain and satisfaction at many levels. A tolerance for differences, an understanding of human frailties and shortcomings.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
