Last Quarter Moon
The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Thursday, February 4th, 2021, at 12:37 PM EST.
On Thursday afternoon, the Last Quarter Moon is exact when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Scorpio.
The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of the recent Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.
This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might consider what our recent revelations mean to us, and what we might do as a result. It’s better to review and sort than to push something new. Until the New Moon, we might take inventory, tie up loose ends, and let go if necessary.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 16 degrees and 8 minutes of Scorpio (square the Sun at 16 degrees and 8 minutes of Aquarius), affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 14 to 18 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Aquarius; Mercury is in Aquarius; Venus is in Capricorn to February 1st, when it enters Aquarius; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19 to February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 8 to March 15. [This is an extended stay due to the retrograde cycle from January 30-February 20.] When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions is increased. We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships.
Venus is in Aquarius from February 1 to 25. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on his own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now. Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
Mars is in Taurus from January 6 to March 3, 2021. We are determined, stubborn, and resolute during this cycle. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goal is longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn entered Aquarius on December 17th, 2020. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1, 2021. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships are paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others’ expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence.
There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced at times. However, this cycle offers us an opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us feel more grounded and secure in the long run.
Venus is in Aquarius from February 1 to 25, 2021. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships.
With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing. Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena.
With Venus in Aquarius, it’s best to go into dates with new people casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism simply won’t work. We may also find ourselves attracted to–or attracting–people who are not our usual “type.”
This week: On Thursday, there can be some minor disillusionment that might ultimately lead us to a better understanding of a situation or person, but it can feel demotivating at the time. On Friday and Saturday, Venus forms aspects with Saturn, Chiron, and Uranus that Jupiter recently formed in January, and it’s complicated. While we recognize a need to stabilize and mature, meeting our responsiblilies, part of us is rebelling against these restrictions.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love ’em: that’s what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so – but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus conjunct Pluto January 27-28. An extraordinarily passionate time for relationships. We are focused and confident. There is a tendency to want–and to demand–a lot from a partnership or friendship. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships begun under this influence are intense and passionate, deep and far from superficial, and can be quite possessive as well.
Venus semi-square Neptune February 4. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus conjunct Saturn February 5-6. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; thus we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Renewed ties to old friends or lovers are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing relationships.
Venus sextile Chiron February 5-6. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
Venus square Uranus February 6. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus parallel Saturn February 6-7. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most.
Venus contra-parallel Mars February 9-10. Passions are stimulated and intense. Fine line between love and hate. Competitiveness. Questions are raised or ultimatums made.
Venus conjunct Jupiter February 10-11. We have large appetites for love and pleasure, and generosity of spirit as well. An excellent time (all things considered) to begin a new relationship, or renew an old/existing one.
Venus parallel Jupiter February 12. We are charitable with others and have a stronger desire than usual to find meaning in our relationships. There may be some overstating or overindulgence now, however.
Venus conjunct Mercury February 12-13. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, February 1st, from 6:10 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Venus), until the Moon enters Libra at 6:25 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, February 3rd, from 1:15 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 9:15 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, February 5th, from 4:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 12:17 PM EST.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Sunday, January 31st, at approximately 1:10 PM EST, until Monday, February 1st, at approximately 6:05 AM EST, while the Moon is in Virgo. Caveats: Mercury is retrograde during this window, and the Sun is applying to a square to Mars for much of this window.
Another window occurs from Saturday, February 6th, at approximately 10:45 PM EST, until Sunday, February 7th, at approximately 1:15 AM EST, while the Moon is in Sagittarius.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Sun square Mars. We have “spring fever” no matter what the season. Driven by a restless desire to do something, without a well-defined goal we tend towards impulsive actions and get ourselves into needless arguments. Our reactions tend to be defensive or competitive. We are not very willing to compromise or negotiate. We are more inclined to injury and accident. Energy output can run high if we choose to focus.
Venus semi-square Neptune. Happiness is addictive under this influence. We tend to see what we want to see. Glossing over the more realistic points, details, and flaws of circumstances and of people provides us with instant gratification. However, it’s wise to hold off on making important purchases, or natalizing a relationship until the veil lifts. Take care with legal, financial, and social involvements, contracts, or formal agreements under this dreamy influence.
Venus conjunct Saturn. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; or we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Financial discipline, realism, and maturity are possible now. We are more likely to be conservative when it comes to spending. Sound judgment may be exercised. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Support from older people or authority figures may come by way of solid advice or tangible help. Renewed ties to old friends are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing friendships.
Venus sextile Chiron. We have the chance to heal our personal relationships now, as we are more open to intimacy and commitment, as well as learning from one another. We more easily see beauty in human weaknesses. It’s a strong time for building trust in relationships.
Venus square Uranus. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness is probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. Hold off on decision-making with regards to finances.

JANUARY 31
Today’s Virgo Moon is particular, intelligent, and helpful. We see the details more than the overview. The Sun and Mars head toward a square aspect, exact tomorrow morning, introducing some tension as the day advances. We may have a hard time settling down, entertaining a strong urge to do something, to take action, and to make something happen, but we may not know how to direct this excess energy. We might feel the need for more challenges, enterprise, and initiative. Reactions tend to be defensive or competitive now, and we can be averse to negotiation or compromise. Energy output can run high if we choose to focus and exercise patience, however.
FEBRUARY 1
The Sun and Mars perfect their square this morning, and as discussed yesterday, this transit can generate some tension. Through restlessness stirred now, we might discover that we need to connect with our enterprising natures. Clashes of ego or shows of strength are possible. As the day advances, it’s far easier to settle down. The Moon leaves Virgo and enters peace-loving Libra at 6:25 AM EST. The Moon, while still in Virgo, harmonizes with Venus, and later, the Libra Moon forms a trine to Jupiter, further promoting harmony and cooperation. Venus enters Aquarius today, joining a slew of cosmic bodies in the sign, and will transit Aquarius until the 25th. We move towards more unconventionality, independence, and freedom in our social relationships under this influence. Experimental relationships, entertainment, purchases, and pursuits are especially intriguing now. Allowing one another fuller freedom of expression and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially are themes. Our tastes, interests, and pleasures incline towards the avant-garde during this cycle.
The void Moon occurs from 6:10 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Venus), until the Moon enters Libra at 6:25 AM EST.
FEBRUARY 2
The Moon spends the day in Libra, harmonizing with the Aquarius Sun this morning. We tend to make an extra effort to be inclusive, compromising, and polite. We’re seeking balance in our lives today, and relationships can be in high focus. We tend to weigh all perspectives and to consider all possibilities while the Moon is in Libra. For the most part, we’re cooperative and gracious today. Nevertheless, with Saturn in minor challenging aspect to Vesta, we can feel a little stressed, unappreciated, or overburdened with our work, obligations, or commitments.
FEBRUARY 3
The Moon continues its transit of Libra until 9:15 AM EST when it moves into Scorpio. The Libra Moon inclines us to focus on equality and fairness or balance. The Moon’s transit of Scorpio from 9:15 AM forward draws us to transformative and emotionally exciting experiences. We’re interested in discovering deeper truths and motives. Today’s Mercury-Uranus aspect inspires creative ways to approach technical matters. The Scorpio Moon forms squares to Venus and Saturn, and it opposes Uranus, and we can feel torn between our responsibilities and our sense of freedom. Confrontations or change of plans can jar us out of our usual routines. Compromise may not feel easy.
The void Moon occurs from 1:15 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 9:15 AM EST.
FEBRUARY 4
The Moon spends the day in deep, observant Scorpio. The Last Quarter Moon is exact early this afternoon when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Scorpio, pointing to a crisis of consciousness. It’s a time for considering what our recent revelations mean to us and for what we might do as a result. This Quarter Moon signals the need to review and sort rather than push something new. Until the New Moon on the 11th, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary. Venus forms a semi-square to Neptune today, and we may gloss over problems or see what we want to see, imagining the best or the worst when the truth is somewhere in between. We might have temporary doubts about our lovability and worth or about a relationship, pleasure, or comfort levels. Alternatively, we might go in the other direction and look the other way in the face of critical flaws and details.
FEBRUARY 5
The Moon continues its transit of intense, passionate Scorpio until 12:17 PM EST, after which it transits truth-seeking, adventurous Sagittarius. Venus heads toward a conjunction with Saturn, exact early tomorrow and influencing today. The Sagittarius Moon hooks into this energy through sextiles to Venus and Saturn, and we’re more thoughtful about our attachments and affections. When it comes to finances and relationships, we may need to limit a pleasure or indulgence or sacrifice a material benefit for a spiritual one (or vice versa). Extravagances have a way of catching up with us, and buckling down is necessary. Still, we’re inclined to feel good about making a mature choice now. We may be experiencing a new sense of realism in our relationships. This can also be a time for bonding more strongly with loved ones through the sharing of responsibility, concerns, or dilemmas. We might face reality about our finances, a personal belief, or a love/social matter. A commitment may be made, or there can be a “test” of sorts to an existing commitment.
The void Moon occurs from 4:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 12:17 PM EST.
FEBRUARY 6
Venus aligns with Saturn early today, forms a sextile to Chiron this morning, and forms a square to Uranus tonight. Our feelings and interactions are complicated! While we recognize a need to stabilize and mature, meeting our responsibilities, part of us is rebelling against these restrictions. There may be a challenge or struggle as values and tastes clash, or we can feel torn between wanting closeness and freedom. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Still, this can be a time when some relationships go through healing. Ups and downs may lead to new commitments. The Sun forms a trine to the North Node of the Moon, encouraging us to aspire to our goals, rise to a challenge, and grow and improve. The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, inspiring us to explore and experience.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
