The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Wednesday, January 20th, 2021, at 4:01 PM EST.
On Wednesday afternoon, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Taurus. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 1 degrees and 2 minutes of Taurus, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 29 to 30 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) and 0 to 3 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn until the 19th, when the Sun is in Aquarius; Mercury is in Aquarius; Venus is in Capricorn; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21, 2020-January 19, 2021. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction through completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19 to February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 8 to March 15. [This is an extended stay due to an upcoming retrograde cycle from January 30-February 20.] When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions is increased. We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships.
Mars is in Taurus from January 6 to March 3, 2021. We are determined, stubborn, and resolute during this cycle. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goal is longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn entered Aquarius on December 17th, 2020. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1, 2021. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships are paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others’ expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence.
There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced at times. However, this cycle offers us an opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us feel more grounded and secure in the long run.
This week: On Friday and Saturday, the 22-23, we’re attracted to situations, pleasures, relationships, and people with layers. We tune in to the subtleties of human interaction.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love ’em: that’s what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so – but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.
Venus trine Uranus January 13. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus sextile Neptune January 22-23. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus parallel Pluto January 23. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.
Venus conjunct Pluto January 27-28. An extraordinarily passionate time for relationships. We are focused and confident. There is a tendency to want–and to demand–a lot from a partnership or friendship. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships begun under this influence are intense and passionate, deep and far from superficial, and can be quite possessive as well.
Venus semi-square Neptune February 4. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus conjunct Saturn February 5-6. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; thus we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Renewed ties to old friends or lovers are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing relationships.
Venus sextile Chiron February 5-6. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
Venus square Uranus February 6. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus parallel Saturn February 6-7. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, January 17th, from 10:45 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Monday, January 18th, at 2:08 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, January 20th, from 3:29 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:57 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, January 22nd, from 4:28 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini the next day, Saturday, January 23rd, at 2:44 AM EST.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon very early on the 13th, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. The Moon is waxing after the New Moon, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, again with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Jupiter square Uranus. We need to be willing to make changes in our lives now, or change will be forced upon us. This is a rebellious, restless influence–one in which we should avoid making changes just for the sake of making changes. We might take risks (perhaps foolish ones) for the sake of freedom. This is not a good time for financial speculation or travel. This is a time during which we can open ourselves up to new ways of thinking. However, we could also too easily avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter.
Saturn semi-square Neptune. Some feelings of disillusionment can come now as our dreams and ideals can be put to the test. Questioning our faith in our dreams can lead to lack of follow-through or wasteful activities and avoidance of responsibilities. Ideally, this crisis leads to a realignment of material goals and spiritual ideals as we assess what is truly meaningful to us.
Mars conjunct Uranus. A tendency to take risks, to feel restless, and to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences can take hold now. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to change our goals or actions. We are naturally bold and assertive, willing to experiment, and conscious of a need to act independently. Our ideas may be ground-breaking, or at the very least progressive. A strong desire to make things happen is with us now. The best way to harness this exciting but erratic energy is to act rather than react.
Mercury semi-square Chiron. Communications may be careless, hurtful or perceived as hurtful under this influence. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now. There may be impatience with rules, worry or guilty feelings, and conflicting viewpoints now.
Mars square Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We can be impatient if results of our efforts don’t materialize right away, and we can also be too focused on what we think should be and lose sight of what is possible. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences is the inclination, but can be costly. This energy is also associated with lawsuits or struggles involving differences in personal philosophies and principles. A feeling of urgency may make us come on stronger than we intend. The inclination towards taking risks is strong, and patience is short.
Sun semi-square Neptune. Our willpower is low as we stray from our goals and temporarily lose focus. It’s difficult to formulate — or stick to — clear goals during this transit. Concentrating on artistic or spiritual pursuits is better than focusing on matters that require straightforward, factual thinking today. It can be difficult knowing where or how to direct our willpower under this influence. It’s also a challenge knowing where we stand with others. Avoid such things as scheduling surgery, important appointments, job interviews, or launches of new projects at this time.
Venus sextile Neptune. We are more imaginative and attuned to the world of beauty and romance today. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level is possible now.
Sun conjunct Saturn. This is a time when we are called upon to “get real”. We feel the constraints of time and are motivated by the desire to manifest tangible results. It’s “nose to the grindstone” time. We may feel overworked; alternatively, we welcome some discipline into our lives. Avoid launching new projects, particularly financial ones. Instead, work on a new plan for creating order in your life, or on an old project that requires a new commitment. Emotional energy is not enough to fuel us for the time being; thus we could feel sapped on a physical level. However, making new commitments to old goals, shouldering responsibilities, and making careful use of our resources could feed our need for structure and order in our lives.

JANUARY 17
Jupiter forms a square to Uranus today. While it’s an aspect between outer planets and its influence is strong, it only occurs this once. This transit stirs restless, rebellious energy. We might take risks for the sake of freedom but should avoid stirring the pot mindlessly. It’s not an ideal time for financial speculation or travel. We, too quickly, avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter during this transit. However, we might open ourselves up to new ways of thinking, which can be magical. As a matter of course, changes can be chaotic, but they can also turn into interesting and useful detours. It’s best not to jump too quickly into new ventures, as follow-through is not a strong suit at this time. Impulsiveness can work if we’re in tune with our needs, but it can lead to mistakes if we’re not. We should watch for making decisions while in the “freedom at all costs” mindset. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces, aligning with Neptune this morning and harmonizing with the Capricorn Sun tonight. We quickly tune into the vibrations around us, and we’re psychically open now. We’re inclined to dream, inspire, and seek inspiration.
The void Moon occurs from 10:45 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries tomorrow, Monday, January 18th, at 2:08 AM EST.
JANUARY 18
The Moon ends its transit of Pisces and enters Aries at 2:08 AM EST. The Moon in Aries is assertive, direct, and straightforward. We want to move on and start fresh. We have no interest in dwelling on the past. While we want to be the first to discover new things, the Moon harmonizes with practical Saturn and then inclusive Jupiter today, and we can benefit from sharing time–and ideas–with others. This can be a time of increased ambition in general, and while we can make strides towards our goals, we may be putting too much pressure on ourselves to push matters forward.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Aries today at 2:08 AM EST.
JANUARY 19
The Sun enters the sign of Aquarius today, where it will transit until February 18th. During this cycle, we are motivated by our need for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. Our attention turns to what is outdated in our lives, and we strive to find new perspectives and methods. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn found appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe in the month ahead. However, we can be unreliable, unpredictable, or too rebellious for our own good when the Sun is under strain. The Moon spends the day in forward-looking Aries. An Aries Moon is bold and pioneering, and also very independent.
JANUARY 20
Saturn forms a semi-square to Neptune today, and some feelings of disillusionment can emerge as our dreams and ideals may be put to the test. Questioning our faith in our dreams can lead to lack of follow-through or wasteful activities and avoidance of responsibilities. Ideally, this crisis leads to a realignment of material goals and spiritual ideals as we assess what is truly meaningful to us. This is a longer-term, outer planet transit, but it’s a standalone one. Also today, Mars aligns with Uranus. This transit occurs approximately every two years, and when it does, we can experience a sudden desire to make things happen. It’s a powerful time for ridding ourselves of attachments that have been weighing us down and for letting change in. We are bold and assertive, willing to experiment, and hyper-conscious of a need to act independently. The best way to harness this exciting but erratic energy is to act rather than react. However, it can be difficult to know whether our impulses come from genuine desire or if we are rebelling against restrictions. We should watch for rash decisions and impatience, which can lead to accidents or other missteps. Anger or rebellion can be sudden, unexpected, and erratic. With Mars and Uranus in Taurus, there can be abrupt changes, choices, or decisions with money, valuables, possessions, ownership, and income, leading to a reshuffling of priorities or values. On a psychological level, this can be about boundaries, self-worth, and matters of respect. The Moon continues its transit of assertive Aries until 1:57 PM EST when it moves into stubborn, deliberate Taurus.
The void Moon occurs from 3:29 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:57 PM EST.
JANUARY 21
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Taurus, and with this Moon position, we crave simplicity, comfort, and predictability. However, with both Mars and Uranus currently in the sign, we’d be wise to embrace some level of change and progress. The need to do our routines just a bit differently can arise. Nobody can force us to do anything just now–we are only in the mood to do things voluntarily. While the Mars-Uranus alignment is separating, the Moon aligns with Mars and Uranus today, and it’s strong in our hearts and memories. However, a Mercury-Chiron semi-square challenges us to communicate with more sensitivity. There is some tendency to doubt our perceptions, and there can be impatience with rules, anxiety or guilty feelings, and conflicting viewpoints to contend with now. We may not have enough faith or confidence in our choices to make effective decisions at the moment, but this gives us a chance to learn more about areas where we feel uninformed.
JANUARY 22
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Taurus, and we seek comfort and pleasure. While Taurus is a placid sign, we’re heading to a Mars-Jupiter square, bringing hot-headed, dynamic energy to the day. Mars first formed an upper square to Jupiter in August 2020 while both Mars and Jupiter were in different signs, and then returned to this square when Mars was retrograde in October. Today’s third and final perfection can feel like the end of a story that began last summer. With this transit, we tend to overdo or jump into action too hastily. We’re easily riled up, enthusiastic, or excited under this influence. We can be excited about our prospects, but perhaps too hasty, counting our chickens before they hatch, putting money into a venture that needs further review, or overestimating what we (or the world) can do. We may be so focused on what we think should be and lose sight of what is possible. A feeling of urgency may lead to coming on stronger than we intend. However, if we use common sense, this is a good time to stretch our imaginations and entertain new possibilities. Be watchful of making too much of a matter that doesn’t deserve so much attention.
The void Moon occurs from 4:28 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini tomorrow, Saturday, January 23rd, at 2:44 AM EST.
JANUARY 23
Saturn recently formed a semi-square with Neptune, and today, the Sun semi-squares Neptune and then aligns with Saturn. We’re reminded of the constraints of time and motivated by the desire to manifest tangible results. It’s “nose to the grindstone” time as we begin to recognize the need to work hard at our priorities. We may feel burdened, overworked, or restricted, and possibly somewhat disillusioned, but these things motivate a fresh start. We might also welcome some discipline in our lives. It’s a time to work on a revised plan for creating order in our lives or on an old project that requires a new commitment. Emotional energy is not enough to fuel us for the time being. As such, we could feel sapped on a physical level. However, recommitting to goals, shouldering responsibilities, and making careful use of our resources could feed our need for structure and order in our lives and get us back on track. We also experience a Venus-Neptune sextile, helping us cut through some of the tension. We are looking to see the best in people with this transit. We are inclined to see the spiritual dimensions of our relationships and to treat others with increased compassion. It also helps detach us just enough from our feelings that we’re less possessive. The Moon leaves Taurus and enters Gemini early in the day, at 2:44 AM EST. The Gemini Moon harmonizes with the Sun, Saturn, Chiron, and Jupiter, boosting cooperation, particularly through communications.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Gemini today at 2:44 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation.
