First Quarter Moon
The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Friday, February 19th, 2021, at 1:47 PM EST.
On Friday afternoon, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Pisces forms a square with the Moon in Gemini. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 1 degrees and 21 minutes of Gemini square the Sun at 1 degree and 21 minutes Pisces, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 0 to 3 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) and 29 to 30 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Aquarius until February 18th, when the Sun enters Pisces; Mercury is in Aquarius; Venus is in Aquarius; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19 to February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
The Sun is in Pisces from February 18 to March 20. With the Sun in Pisces, we are guided by altruistic feelings. We are less motivated to do than we are to feel, imagine, and dream. A “what will be, will be” attitude reigns, and we are guided by a sense of universal correlations. Pisces rules empathy, selfless love, devotion, and wisdom. Its shadow side rules self-pity, a feeling of being victimized by life, passivity, and elusiveness.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 8 to March 15. [This is an extended stay due to the retrograde cycle from January 30-February 20.] When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Aquarius from February 1 to 25. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on his own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now. Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
Mars is in Taurus from January 6 to March 3, 2021. We are determined, stubborn, and resolute during this cycle. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goal is longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn entered Aquarius on December 17th, 2020. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aquarius from February 1 to 25, 2021. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships.
With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing. Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena.
With Venus in Aquarius, it’s best to go into dates with new people casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism simply won’t work. We may also find ourselves attracted to–or attracting–people who are not our usual “type.”
This week: On Sunday and Monday (the 14-15), we gravitate toward situations that help us grow, improve, and move forward. Cooperation can bring rewards. Fortunate connections might be made now.
On Thursday and Friday, our needs and desires seem to clash, which can lead to some friction. Disagreements are possible with differences and contrasts standing out more than usual. There can be a real discrepancy between values and desires, and passions run high. Be wary of making impulse purchases and relationship decisions under these conditions. Still, talking things through can help, and we’re inclined to believe that clarifications are the key to better compatibility.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty-bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus parallel Jupiter February 12. We are charitable with others and have a stronger desire than usual to find meaning in our relationships. There may be some overstating or overindulgence now, however.
Venus conjunct Mercury February 12-13. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
Venus trine True North Node February 13-15. We are more concerned about harmonizing and tend to be agreeable and cooperative. We could feel lucky in love, and we could meet someone who is good for us. Fortunate connections might be made now.
Venus semi-square Chiron February 18. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus parallel Mercury February 18-19. A congenial time when we socialize and converse more readily and appreciate diplomacy.
Venus square Mars February 18-19. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus contra-parallel Uranus February 22-23. Questions of freedom, change, specialness, and experimentation are raised in our relationships.
Venus sextile Uranus March 2-3. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus semi-square Pluto March 5-6. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, February 14th, from 2:29 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries at 10:55 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, February 16th, from 7:17 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Taurus at 10:12 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, February 19th, from 2:28 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:04 AM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury conjunct Jupiter. We can visualize in broader terms and see the “big picture” now. Travel is favored, all things equal. We are optimistic, which can help us attract positive circumstances. This is a good time to submit ideas, applications, and so forth, all things equal. This is a time of thinking on a grand scale and long-range planning. Details and mundane affairs do not interest us as much as the big picture does. We are prone to exaggerating the facts due to enthusiasm. Expressing ourselves verbally comes easily, and public relations and negotiations run especially smoothly. This is a time for making long-range plans, seeing the big picture, and thinking about what is really important to us in the long run.
Mars semi-square Chiron. We can be easily offended under the influence of this transit. Touchiness. Difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner.
Saturn square Uranus. There can be tension experienced as our needs for freedom and spontaneity seem to clash with a need for structure and stability. Ideally, we can find creative ways to satisfy these diverging needs, perhaps by giving form to our ideals and quest for progress. Rules and limitations can feel more challenging to tolerate, but life feels too chaotic without some lines drawn. Attempts to assert our individuality, freedom, and originality tend to undermine our feeling of groundedness and security. Yet, we are not satisfied when we conform. There may be sudden and unexpected twists that force us to do something different or free ourselves from old habits. Adjusting our plans may be in order, and striking a balance between convention and innovation is the challenge. Setbacks tend to be temporary and often lead to new, more creative paths or solutions. While this aspect is active, however, we can feel some real frustration. There can be elevated frustrations related to differences in opinion that feel more problematic than usual, blocking progress or leading to delays. People we relied on may seem less reliable at this time.
Venus semi-square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy are possible now as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships with others. We might have a hard time learning from one another as a result.
Venus square Mars. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from differences between romantic and sexual needs. Be wary of making impulse purchases. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, and invigorating.

FEBRUARY 14
With Mercury conjunct Jupiter today, communications are grand, enthusiastic, and perhaps exaggerated. We are optimistic, which can help us attract favorable circumstances. We should watch for overstating and promising more than we can do, but we might also enjoy good humor and positive vibes. It’s a good time to stretch our thinking to include different possibilities. Verbal expression flows more smoothly. Agreements and resolutions may figure strongly, although they may need revision later. We’re either seeing solutions or finding reasons to feel hopeful. Our opinions are strong, and we can be enthusiastic about our ideas. Venus forms a trine to the True North Node of the Moon, and we are more dedicated than usual to creating harmony. We make an extra effort to be agreeable and cooperative, and this attitude helps us reach our goals. We could feel lucky in love or business, and we might make a fortunate connection. The Moon continues to transit Pisces until 10:55 AM EST when it enters Aries. The Aries Moon can prompt a desire to start fresh or come first.
The void Moon occurs from 2:29 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries at 10:55 AM EST.
FEBRUARY 15
The Moon spends the day in Aries, harmonizing with planets in Aquarius (Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus). The Aries Moon is assertive, direct, and straightforward. We want to start fresh and move on, and we have no interest in dwelling on the past. While we want to be the first to discover new things with this Moon position, its harmony with planets in Aquarius suggests it would benefit us to share time–and ideas–with others.
FEBRUARY 16
The Moon spends much of the day in forward-looking Aries. An Aries Moon is bold and pioneering, although sometimes impatient. We’re quick to let go of the past, and we’re both hopeful and enthusiastic. We can enjoy increased clarity derived from a feeling that what we want and what we need are in harmony with the Moon’s sextile to the Sun. We can be excited about our personal plans, although duties and ambitions can distract us, producing tension with the Moon’s square to Pluto. The Moon continues its transit of assertive Aries until 10:12 PM EST when it moves into stubborn, deliberate Taurus.
The void Moon occurs from 7:17 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Taurus at 10:12 PM EST.
FEBRUARY 17
Saturn forms a square to Uranus today, generating some friction. It’s the first of three such hits in 2021, with the other two set to occur in June and December. At the root of tension is a clash between our need for freedom and spontaneity and our need for structure and stability. Ideally, we can find creative ways to satisfy these diverging needs, perhaps by giving form to our ideals and quest for progress. Still, rules and limitations are harder to tolerate, but life feels too chaotic without some lines drawn. Attempts to assert our individuality, freedom, and originality tend to undermine our feeling of groundedness and security. Yet, we are not satisfied when we conform. There may be sudden and unexpected twists that force us to do something different or free ourselves from old habits during this period. Adjusting our plans may be in order, and striking a balance between convention and innovation is the challenge. Setbacks tend to be temporary and could very well lead to new, more creative paths or solutions. While this aspect is active, however, we can feel some real frustration. In particular, differences in opinion can feel more problematic than usual, blocking progress or leading to delays. People we relied on to date may seem less reliable at this time. We have an unusual situation where Saturn, the conservative planet, is in a progressive sign, Aquarius, while Uranus, the progressive planet, is in a conservative sign, Taurus. At times, these energies can feel oppressive, and we might all too often find ourselves at cross-purposes, even when the end game is similar. This morning, Mars forms a semi-square to Chiron and standing up for what we believe in may not be comfortable just for now. There can be difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner, which can lead to some challenges but possibly also some interesting detours. The Moon spends the day in the sign of stable Taurus, although with the Moon’s alignment with Uranus, we’re not content with the same routine.
FEBRUARY 18
The Sun enters Pisces today, and it will stay in the sign until March 20th. During this cycle, altruistic feelings guide us. We are less motivated to take action than we are to feel, imagine, and dream. A “what will be, will be” attitude reigns, and a sense of universal correlations leads the way. Pisces rules empathy, selfless love, devotion, and wisdom. Its shadow side involves self-pity, a feeling of being victimized by life, passivity, and avoidance. The Moon spends the day in steady, sensual Taurus. It forms a square to Venus and aligns with Mars this evening, tapping into the energy of an upcoming Venus-Mars square. We can feel fired up, but our needs and desires tend to clash. With a Venus-Chiron semi-square today, we’re inclined to focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships, which works only if we make a concerted effort to learn from the differences.
FEBRUARY 19
Competitive energy is with us today with squares between Venus and Mars and the lights. The First Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Pisces forms a square with the Moon in Gemini this afternoon. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth. We become especially aware of obstacles to our goals. Venus in Aquarius forms a square with Mars in Taurus today, and we can feel some tension or dissatisfaction. This transit can awaken many urges and desires, but most may only be whims or distractions. Disagreements are possible as differences and contrasts stand out more than usual. A passive or soft approach may irritate, but an aggressive approach can be grating, too–we seem to have poor timing. We can be temperamental and sensitive. What we value and what we desire can be at odds. Ideally, discontent prompts creative improvements and changes. Be wary of making impulse purchases and relationship decisions under these conditions. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, and it can be challenging or refreshing, or perhaps both! The Moon continues its transit of Taurus until 11:04 AM EST, after which it transits Gemini.
The void Moon occurs from 2:28 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:04 AM EST.
FEBRUARY 20
Mercury station and turns direct today after retrograde motion since January 30th. Over the coming weeks, recent problems with communications and decision-making should start to improve. The answers we’ve been waiting for can arrive. Plans or projects that have stalled might now resume. However, we can be flooded with energies that are hard to make sense of during the shift today. Thus, we might avoid critical decision-making for the time being, if possible. It’s a better day to take in than to take action. It’s also a good idea not to rush conversations and observations. Helping our transition is the Moon in communicative Gemini all day, harmonizing with Chiron, Saturn, Mercury, and Jupiter. Even if some words aren’t perfect, we’re cooperative and courteous.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Sun in Pisces The mystic, the martyr, the sinner, and the saint: these archetypes take on greater importance in your life at a time like this. Forgiveness, compassion, and understanding come naturally, when you look at life from an eternal perspective – and if anyone ever does know such things, you’ll probably come to understand them as this cycle unfolds. This can be a phase of sublime spiritual development, to be sure. But you should be aware of tendencies to believe too quickly, too deeply, or to become dependent on things or people that seem to offer quick and easy answers to life’s deepest yearnings.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
