The First Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Pisces on Tuesday. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, and we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.

Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 27 degrees and 35 minutes of Pisces square the Sun at the same degree of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 26 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

The New Moon in Sagittarius marks the beginning of a new cycle. Representing new beginnings, the New Moon occurs with the Sun and Moon’s alignment in the mutable fire sign of Sagittarius. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Archer – optimistic, enthusiastic, adventurous, honest, outspoken, independent – and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives.

As we advance, we can focus on goals that will increase our understanding and awareness, give us the courage to expand our horizons, and gain confidence and optimism from a broader perspective.

All too easily, we can get lost in the details of mundane existence. With this potent Sagittarius energy, however, we can find ways to transcend these details of day-to-day life and nurture our faith, hope, and vision.

Because Sagittarius thinks in big terms, we may have a tendency to overdo our expectations – something to watch for. We are setting the stage for reaping the rewards from our braveries, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.

This New Moon forms a square with Neptune, and it’s best to watch for deception, self-deception, and procrastination. With its trine to the North Node of the Moon, the spirit to improve, grow, and make progress is with us.

This week: The Sun is in Sagittarius until the 21st, when the Sun heads into Capricorn; Mercury is in Capricorn until the 23rd, when it returns to Sagittarius; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Sagittarius.

The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 22-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves.

While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking.

We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.

The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 20. While the Sun is in Capricorn, we are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes.

Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.

We take a conservative approach to most matters during this month-long transit. Taking risks or making impulsive moves doesn’t suit us. We move ahead gradually but steadily and prosper by playing the long game–patiently working toward our objectives and taking care of our future. It’s a time when we expect eventual success by embracing step-by-step methods.

Mercury is in Capricorn from December 1-23. [Mercury will return to Capricorn from January 13th to February 5th, 2024 after retreating into Sagittarius due to Mercury’s retrograde motion from December 13, 2023, to January 1, 2024.] When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized.

We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. Our survival instincts are strong–we’re interested in what will benefit us in the long term.

We’re not interested in the fluff, preferring to get right to a point or the bottom line. Communication can be somewhat guarded or cautious, and similarly not very floral or expressive. We gravitate to concrete subjects and information that’s logical, useful, and well-organized. We may prefer a methodical approach to studying. Our fantasies may be well-considered and possible, with realistic overtones.

We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism. At times, we might lack humor, or we’re inclined toward sarcasm when joking. We can be quite stubborn with our ideas and methods.

We can use this period to make solid, realistic plans and get organized. It’s a favorable time to advise, teach, or guide. Generally, we’re more concerned than usual with our reputation or responsibilities. Our dependability can reap rewards. We love to plan ahead and map out our next steps. Changes of schedule can be most disconcerting during this cycle.

Our reactions are sensible, cool, and level-headed while Mercury is in Capricorn.

Mercury is in Sagittarius from December 23-January 13. [Mercury retreats to Sagittarius on December 23rd due to Mercury’s retrograde motion from December 13, 2023, to January 1, 2024.] When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. We seek ideals, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.

We’re more inclined to ask questions and seek answers during this forward-looking cycle. We might often wax philosophical, and we enjoy wrapping our minds around new concepts and ideas. Still, the details are not as interesting to us now, as we prefer to envision the big picture.

On the downside, we can be inconsistent and lack attention to details. While frank and open, we can also be tactless during this period. We’re generous with our communications and input, and we’re humorous and friendly at this time.

Venus is in Scorpio from December 4-29. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. It’s a highly emotional position for Venus, and it’s passionate energy.

Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises to feel alive and vital.

Similarly, during this Venus-in-Scorpio cycle, we seek or gravitate to absorbing, deeply engaging, dramatic pleasures, activities, projects, and art. Things that are profound, disturbing, mysterious, or unusual can be more appealing now.

This can be a good time for finances, especially when working with others’ talents or resources, whether as an agent, supporter, or partner.

Mars is in Sagittarius from November 24, 2023-January 4, 2024. With a Sagittarius Mars, our actions are motivated by our ideals. We are bothered by routine, quickly becoming restless if we feel confined. Our love of adventure and of conquest is strong–this is the position of wanderlust. We start projects or challenges with gusto, although we may tend to abandon them rather quickly. This may be because we set our sights too high! There is a tendency to jump in and think about it later. Part of us resists directions, instructions, and planning ahead.

We are spontaneous, direct, and passionate about our beliefs with Mars in Sagittarius. It’s a playful, fun-loving, and optimistic energy. We have strong morals, and we’re champions for the truth. We’re also ready for a hearty debate. Given the space to find our own way, we can move mountains. In fact, we enjoy stretching our limits. It’s an inspiring, forward-looking period when we follow our hearts and positive visions of the future.

Jupiter is in Taurus.

Uranus is in Taurus.

Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.

There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.

Romance & Relationships

We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed by and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.

This week: Sunday is not an ideal time for a full-on expression of feelings. Even without direct conflict, we can feel a little off.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, while we’re not necessarily saying the right things, we’re ready to grow through our missteps or through awkward moments. We might struggle with whether to take a direct or indirect approach to get what we want. We may want to lock something down yet also battle a feeling of being tied down–conflicting feelings are likely now. We can feel torn between wanting our freedom/independence and craving company. Feelings or revelations in our relationships can throw us off-center.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.

Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune December 12. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.

Venus quincunx Chiron December 17. There may be vague feelings of discontent in relationships; or a choice that needs to be made regarding personal relationships, money, or possessions. Insecurity involving others might make it awkward for us to express our affections naturally or flowingly.

Venus semi-square Mercury December 19-20. Communications between lovers are superficial and unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. Superficiality in romantic expression may exist now.

Venus semi-sextile Mars December 20. We might struggle with whether to take a direct or indirect approach to get what we want. In truth, we may be better off recognizing that it doesn’t have to be one way or the other–a combination would be ideal, or else the see-sawing can be confusing.

Venus opposition Uranus December 20-21. Not a good time to start relationships. Independence is the reigning need. Some fickleness. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness.

Venus trine Neptune December 24-25. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.

Venus semi-sextile Mercury December 26. It may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.

Venus contra-parallel Uranus December 26. Questions of freedom, change, specialness, and experimentation are raised in our relationships.

Venus sextile Pluto December 28-29. Subtly powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions.

Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron December 29. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.

The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).

Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.

The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.

Venus quincunx Chiron. There may be vague feelings of discontent in relationships; or a choice that needs to be made regarding personal relationships, money, or possessions. Insecurity involving others might make it awkward for us to express our affections naturally or flowingly.

Mercury trine Jupiter. Looking for meaning in mundane affairs, positive thinking, insights, cooperation–these are themes of this influence. Our ideas are big and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. We prefer to think about the big picture rather than becoming bogged down with details. This transit favors short trips, writing, teaching, studying, submitting applications and forms, accurate diagnoses and observations (all things equal).

Mercury sesquiquadrate Uranus. We can have flashes of insight, but tend to be scatterbrained. Our ideas and communications may not be well-received because they don’t seem to others to carry weight. Our minds are not peaceful or harmonious under this influence, and irritable tempers, sarcastic speech, and dogmatism are negative expressions of this energy. However, fresh and creative ideas may come to us now.

Mercury semi-square Venus. Difficulties in social or romantic communication are possible today. On the other hand, we may make more efforts to be polite and to communicate. Hypersensitivity, and lack of mental discipline. Our minds wander.

Venus opposition Uranus. Sudden attractions that may not last come under this influence. Similarly, impulsive attractions to material items that later prove to be unappealing occur now. This is not a good time to start a new relationship nor for any significant financial undertaking. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness are probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. It’s wise to hold off on decision-making with regards to finances and relationships. However, if we can separate rebellion from a sincere need for change, we might open ourselves up to new ways of dealing with others.

Mercury sextile Saturn. A good time to get organized, to do detail work, and to prepare for the future. Decisions made now tend to be practical and well thought out. Work done now will have tangible results in the future.

Mars quincunx Uranus. Making adjustments to our goals may be necessary now, and this can temporarily drain our energy or make us feel restless and impatient.

Mercury conjunct Sun. We are especially sharp, communicative, and open at this time, as our wants are aligned with our thoughts. It’s a favorable time for solving problems. What we say or write now has impact, for better or for worse!

Mars sesquiquadrate Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly.

There’s a serious, responsible, and ambitious tone as the Moon aligns with Saturn this evening. Situations that require us to keep a cool head work best under this influence since we’re not as easily swept away by our feelings. We’re inclined to buckle down and work, organize, and plan.

DECEMBER 18

Mercury forms a trine to Jupiter this morning, stirring our curiosity. Mercury first formed a trine to Jupiter on December 7th, and with Mercury’s retrograde, is now returning to this aspect. It will perfect for a third and final time on January 19th. Today, we can return to a previous idea from a new perspective. Mercury in harmony with Jupiter boosts our optimism and faith. We might gain a positive outlook through conversations and a sense of hope or trust in the future. We are seeking extra meaning to our projects and experiences. A Venus-Pluto quintile can point to a comfortably strategic approach to our money and relationships today. Today’s Pisces Moon is compassionate, warm, and sometimes meandering. Its square to Mars this evening can be restless, however.

DECEMBER 19

The Moon continues in Pisces until 5:47 PM EST today, encouraging the need to connect with our inner world. A First Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Pisces at 1:39 PM EST. A crisis theme surrounds any quarter Moon phase as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. It can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also high energy, motivation, and growth. Mercury’s minor square to Uranus points to minor missteps or interruptions. We may need to manage some inconveniences in our communications and transit. There can also be difficulties following a schedule. The Moon heads into Aries at 5:47 PM, and we want to start fresh. We crave self-direction.

The Moon is void from 4:03 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries at 5:47 PM EST.

DECEMBER 20

The Moon spends the day in dynamic, energetic Aries. However, retrograde Mercury forms a semi-square to Venus this morning, and our words may not reflect what’s in our hearts. As we try to get the words just right, we could fall short with sensitivity. We may be in two minds about a matter–decisions can be hard to come by. Nevertheless, we’re making an extra effort to cooperate. Venus forms a semi-sextile to Mars and heads toward an opposition to Uranus, exact very early tomorrow. As the day advances, unexpected events or feelings may take us off guard. Our feelings, attractions, or people in our lives can surprise us now. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness are themes in our social interactions. Our needs for comfort and togetherness appear to clash with the desire to be free and independent. Indeed, we can experience sudden infatuations, whether with people or material items, that later prove less appealing. As such, it’s not a good time to start a significant financial undertaking or relationship — not until rebellious feelings pass and we gain a better sense of how we honestly feel. Falling back on old patterns of relating won’t work now. Still, if we can separate rebellion from a sincere need for change, we might open ourselves to new ways of relating that accommodate our diverse needs.

DECEMBER 21

The Sun enters Capricorn today, where it will transit until January 20th. During this cycle, we’re motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Completion and accomplishment are satisfying during this Sun transit. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Working towards a long-term goal is the most motivating with this influence. Mercury’s sextile to Saturn this morning grounds our thinking. We might return to a practical conversation or method with success now. Reasoning things logically and step by step can be beneficial and even soothing. With Mars quincunx Uranus, we could be dealing with minor changes of plans or a restless urge for change that interferes with the flow. Some fear of change can stop us in our tracks temporarily. Our efforts to satisfy our desires can miss the mark, but this gives us a chance to make refinements and recalibrate.

Retrograde Mercury will return to the sign of Sagittarius tomorrow, but today, it aligns with the Sun early in the sign of Capricorn. This inferior conjunction of Mercury and the Sun gives us a unique window into the past as it might impact our future. This is a good time to process recent events and ideas. We begin looking at problems or issues from a fresh perspective and a new understanding. Significant new ideas are born at this time and will likely have real staying power or importance in our lives. What we say or write now has an impact, for better or worse! However, we may not have all the facts necessary to reach a definite conclusion, and we might have to revise plans or decisions later. There is some tendency to want to get started before we have a good plan, as Mars and Jupiter form a minor square. This aspect excites our desire to do something new and produces some agitation and competitive feelings that can either distract us or spur us to improve. Enthusiasm and motivation can be incredible if we know where to channel excess energy. Still, overconfidence and overestimation of what we can do may lead to poor decisions or regrettable actions. We can also be rather argumentative and reactive with this combination.

Retrograde Mercury retreats into Sagittarius today, where it will stay until January 13th. Mercury continues to retrograde until January 1st. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking is idealistic and optimistic. We are most concerned with truth, justice, and fairness. However, we are not always very precise under this influence. We may now review or reassess our beliefs, opinions, studies, travel plans, published works, or legal documents. The Moon continues its transit of Taurus all day, encouraging us to enjoy ourselves and appreciate what we have going for us. There can be a slowing down and stabilizing of our feelings for much of the day, with the exception of the hours surrounding the Moon-Venus opposition, when affections are more complicated. Earthy activities and sensual pleasures appeal now more than usual, and we find a sense of peace and contentment with that which is familiar and reliable.
