The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at 2:59 AM EDT.
Early Tuesday, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Taurus forms a square to the Moon in Leo. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Any project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 0 degrees and 25 minutes of Leo square the Sun at 0 degrees and 25 minutes of Taurus, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 0 to 2 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) and 28 to 30 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Aries to the 19th, when the Sun enters Taurus; Mercury is in Aries to the 19th, when Mercury enters Taurus; Venus is in Taurus; Mars is in Gemini until the 23rd, when Mars enters Cancer.
The Sun is in Aries from March 20 to April 19. In Aries, the Sun is enthusiastic and spontaneous. We are motivated by the desire to conquer. We are more impulsive and have the urge to initiate. Aries is a sign that bounces back quickly–there is little shame with Aries. It is brave and pioneering, and somewhat innocent. We are direct and rather uncomplicated in our needs, but we can also be short-sighted and lack the desire to plan ahead.
The Sun is in Taurus from April 19 to May 20. In Taurus, the Sun is methodical, sensual, and receptive. The Sun in Taurus is most active when it is defending or resisting things! As the Sun moves through Taurus when plants take root, our determination and security needs are strong. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar, and values longevity. The shadow side of Taurus is possessiveness and bullheadedness.
Mercury is in Aries from April 3 to 19. When Mercury is in Aries, we are less concerned with objective viewpoints and explanations, and more concerned with reaching a decision…quickly! Our thoughts and ideas are pioneering, and we tend to speak more spontaneously and directly with the planet of communication in bold and assertive Aries.
Mercury is in Taurus from April 19 to May 3. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, solid, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately under this influence, and our minds are oriented to the world of the five senses. We prefer the tried and true rather than new ways of thinking. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives, but we may be in danger of narrow, overly conservative, or rigid thinking.
Venus is in Taurus from April 14 to May 8. In Taurus, Venus is very sensual (naturally), content, and possessive. We seek security and value that which lasts. Our appetite for pleasure is strong. Taurus values the here and the now as well as the world of the five senses. Tangible and physical expressions of love and romance are most important now. Holding on to someone we love is our tendency under Venus in Taurus. The shadow side of this is excessive possessiveness and treating our partners as objects that we own or want to own. On the financial side, Venus in Taurus looks for high-quality, solid, practical, and long-lasting items. Holding on to our possessions is more likely now.
Mars is in Gemini from March 3 to April 23. In Gemini, Mars is considerably more versatile and flexible–and substantially less determined and focused! Our interests become more diversified, possibly to the point of going off on so many tangents that we are scattered and ineffective. It’s an excellent time for strategizing and devising useful tactics to achieve our desires and goals. We’re resourceful and clever, and we know how to use words effectively–possibly using words as weapons! We’re quick on our feet and intelligent with plans and strategy.
Mars is in Cancer from April 23 to June 11. We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our mood of the moment.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Taurus from April 14 to May 8. In Taurus, Venus is usually quite content, but can be possessive.
This week: On Monday and Tuesday, we’re inclined to project our fantasies, whether these are positive or negative, onto others or relationships. Watch for deception and self-deception now.
On Thursday and Friday, the need for a fresh start is with us. We want to move forward fearlessly into the future, but we can reach an impasse or obstacle on Saturday. There can be a checkpoint moment for our relationships. Temporarily, we fear the worst and see the flaws. There can be some emotional distance or blockage, and ideally, it’s a time for reaching a new level of maturity and realism in your relationships. Relationship goals can very much clash with social life goals now.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Taurus A love of music, an appreciation for sensual pleasures and others of the finer things in life – such are the signs of the cycle which has begun for you. This is aesthetic and artistic to be sure, but it is also practical and materialistic: you develop a keen appreciation for the value of things, including the money it takes to buy them.
Venus square Pluto April 11. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.
Venus semi-square Neptune April 19-20. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus conjunct Uranus April 22. We have a taste for the unusual and the avant garde. We are itching for a change. What makes a person unique is more attractive under this influence. Excitement and newness are valued over permanence in social relationships. Freedom is more important than intimacy just now. We lose our fears of taking risks in love and social situations. Romantic infatuations, gossip, unanticipated opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement.
Venus parallel Uranus April 22-23. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
Venus square Saturn April 24-25. Feeling unsatisfied, isolated, and unloved. Personal relationships are likely to be strained as we express our affections cautiously and sparingly. If we believe we are not getting what we want in love, we attract negative situations and challenges in our relationships. This is not a good time to begin a new relationship–new ones begun now are likely to be stamped with themes of duty and restriction.
Venus conjunct Mercury April 25. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
Venus semi-square Mars April 29-30. Tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging.
Venus contra-parallel Saturn April 30. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most. Some pulling back can occur in relationships now, as we are more self-conscious and cautious with our affections.
Venus sextile Neptune May 2. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, April 19th, from 8:04 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Pluto), until the Moon enters Leo the next day, Tuesday, April 20th, at 2:11 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, April 22nd, from 8:06 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 9:09 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, April 24th, from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 12:07 PM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars quincunx Pluto. A strong desire to prove ourselves may be at the root of confrontations and bull-headedness at this time. Avoid forcing issues.
Mercury conjunct Sun. We are especially sharp, communicative, and open at this time, as our wants are aligned with our thoughts. It’s a favorable time for solving problems. What we say or write now has impact, for better or for worse!
Mars sesquiquadrate Saturn. We are called upon to solve problems, or our plans and efforts meet with resistance. Circumstances seem to block our efforts to assert ourselves. Patience is necessary now, although frustration is very likely. It can feel like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks.
Venus semi-square Neptune. Happiness is addictive under this influence. We tend to see what we want to see. Glossing over the more realistic points, details, and flaws of circumstances and of people provides us with instant gratification. However, it’s wise to hold off on making important purchases, or natalizing a relationship until the veil lifts. Take care with legal, financial, and social involvements, contracts, or formal agreements under this dreamy influence.
Mercury semi-square Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.
Venus conjunct Uranus. We have a taste for the unusual and the avant garde. We are itching for a change. What makes a person unique is more attractive under this influence. Excitement and newness are valued over permanence in social relationships. We lose our fears of taking risks in love and social situations. Romantic infatuations, gossip, unanticipated opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression, personal freedom, and social excitement.
Mercury conjunct Uranus. The ability to grasp intellectual concepts is high right now. Our intuition is spot-on, and we tend to have the right idea at the right moment. The senses may be overloaded, to the point that we are scatter-brained, impulsive, nervous, or impatient. If channeled well, however, our ideas are inventive, original, progressive, and unbiased.
Venus square Saturn. Gaining what we want is challenging under this influence, due to negative attitudes and the tendency to need more than what is possible. Difficulties socializing with others stem from an increased sensitivity to rejection as well as stiffness with the affections. Emotional distance in relationships. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes.

APRIL 18
The Sun and Mercury will both enter Taurus tomorrow. Today, they meet late in the sign of Aries in a superior conjunction. This influence helps bring clarity and sharpness to our minds and observations. What we say or write now has an impact, for better or for worse! It’s an excellent time to fill in the details of recent ideas and turn recent discoveries into something valuable and workable. There can be an epiphany, illumination of a matter, or a clearing of the air. Still, we’re on the verge of brand new things, and it’s best to allow the process before jumping to conclusions. We may want to watch for intellectualizing issues that require sensitivity. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Cancer, and we crave some warmth, safety, and familiarity.
APRIL 19
Mercury and the Sun enter the sign of Taurus today. Mercury in Taurus brings our thinking down to earth, stable, and grounded. Common sense reigns over fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately and gravitate towards tried and true methods. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives during this cycle, but we should watch for overly conservative or rigid thinking. While Mercury will transit Taurus until May 3rd, the Sun lasts longer–until May 20th. With the Sun in Taurus, we’re more practically, materially, and sensually oriented. The Taurus Sun takes its time–it is deliberate yet languishing–and brings us patient and receptive energy. Our security needs are strong, and we can be possessive or stubborn. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar, valuing longevity. Mars in minor hard aspect to Saturn this morning can point to obstacles or impasses that can be discouraging, although also instructional. The Moon spends the day in nurturing, sensitive Cancer.
The void Moon occurs from 8:04 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Pluto), until the Moon enters Leo tomorrow, Tuesday, April 20th, at 2:11 AM EDT.
APRIL 20
The Moon enters Leo at 2:11 AM EDT, and early today, the First Quarter Moon occurs with the Taurus Sun in a square aspect to the Leo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. The Moon in Leo wants us to move out of our comfort zones to share ourselves and creations with others. Venus forms a semi-square with Neptune this morning, and we may gloss over problems or see what we want to see, imagining the best or the worst. Of course, the truth is somewhere in between. We might have temporary doubts about our lovability and worth or about a relationship, pleasure, or comfort levels. Alternatively, we might go in the other direction and look the other way in the face of critical flaws and details. With Jupiter semi-sextile Pluto, we may not fully engage with our intuition or instincts, and judgment may be a little off temporarily. We might do battle with our ideals and morals.
The Moon continues its void period until it enters Leo today at 2:11 AM EDT.
APRIL 21
The Moon spends the day in outgoing, competitive, and loving Leo. Very early today, the Moon opposes Saturn, and we can be frustrated by little things that go wrong or responsibilities that pull us away from our interests. Once past this, the day shapes up to be playful and expressive. A Venus-Jupiter quintile inspires cooperation in situations that call for it. We more readily and naturally give one another the benefit of the doubt. It’s a solid time for release through play, enjoyment, and creative pursuits. It can feel terrific to put our faith in someone or something now.
APRIL 22
Terrific energy is with us for family, togetherness, promoting peace, and taking care of personal matters. A Mercury-Vesta trine this morning favors specialized attention to a particular project or endeavor. We might feel pleasantly dedicated to our work or ideas. Our ability to focus on what we’re doing and communicating improves, and we tend to notice and consider details. However, as the day advances, we go off-script. Venus aligns with Uranus, and Mercury forms a semi-square to Neptune, and the need to express ourselves freely and openly comes on strongly. These influences encourage us to let go of rigidity. We’re itching for a change, whether we’re aware of this or not! Connecting with this desire can help us steer and navigate better. For the time being, we value stimulation and newness over permanence. We lose our fear of taking risks in love, with pleasure, and in social situations. There can be infatuations, whims, gossip, and unexpected opportunities socially or financially. We have a greater need for self-expression and social excitement, but we can find it all too easy to gloss over technical facts. With the Mercury-Neptune influence specifically, there can be cloudy thinking or a tendency to daydream. We may not express ourselves clearly, or others are not reading our messages well–likely, it’s a combination of the two! The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 9:10 AM EDT when it enters Virgo. The Virgo Moon is particular, helpful, and responsible.
The void Moon occurs from 8:06 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 9:09 AM EDT.
APRIL 23
Mars enters the sign of Cancer today, where it will transit until June 11th. Generally speaking, we are cautious and conservative under this influence, but we will fight for, about, or on behalf of those people and things that are dearest to our heart. Much of what we do depends on our current mood, although we are strong and patient during this cycle. The Moon spends the day in the practical, detail-oriented sign of Virgo. While Virgo is generally cautious, its ruler, Mercury, is heading into alignment with Uranus, exact early tomorrow, bringing on some excitement or changefulness to the day’s energies. We can feel inspired to think and connect or communicate in new, fresh ways. It can be a time of mental breakthroughs, innovative thinking, and perhaps nervous energy. We’re not content merely recycling old ideas or performing repetitive processes, and we are quick to latch onto progressive approaches and methods. We might stir things up or shock others with our opinions, ideas, and communications. Our senses may overload to the point that we are scatter-brained, impulsive, or impatient. However, if channeled well, we can come up with inventive, original, progressive, and unbiased ideas and methods.
APRIL 24
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo for just over the first half of the day, forming a trine to Pluto this morning. This Moon encourages an orderly approach to our world. We’re helpful and earnest. The Libra Moon from 12:07 PM EDT forward is conciliatory, kind, and fair-minded, although we can wrestle with a simultaneous need for companionship and personal time. Both Mercury and Venus are heading toward a square with Saturn early tomorrow and an alignment with each other later tomorrow. We’ve been craving more freedom, but we can face some obstacles now. We can be on guard or defensive with our affections, and we may feel a little discouraged on a social level if we don’t receive the feedback we crave. Gaining what we want is challenging temporarily, possibly due to negative expectations or a tendency to need more than what’s currently possible. Difficulties in socializing can occur if we are a little more sensitive to rejection than usual. There may be a lesson or reality check regarding matters of the heart or with finances. It’s best not to make major decisions with these transits until we can return to a more balanced perception of our circumstances.
The void Moon occurs from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 12:07 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Aries A new sense of self, a more assertive personal style, a more dynamic approach to life: these are the hallmarks of the cycle that begins for you now. Doubts fade into the background, and reserve is more and more a thing of the past. It’s time for action; your destiny is in your hands, rather than set apart. Full speed ahead (“and damn the torpedoes”) is your motto now, for better or for worse!
Sun in Taurus The cycle now dawning in your life emphasizes stability, substance, practicality, and the concept of value – value in the material as well as psycho-spiritual sense. This marks a time of building to last, of appreciating the substantial rather than ephemeral. Consolidating past gains rather than focusing on radical new departures is likely to be a major theme for you during this cycle. Appreciating the finer things of life is another hallmark of this phase, which marks a time when you should be concentrating on “smelling the roses” rather than passing them by in such a hurry.
Mercury in Aries New ideas and an independent or pioneering mental orientation take on more importance in your life at this time. Teaching, learning, communicating, and social contact have a way of outlining new directions in your life now, and there is much activity and involvement with these kinds of issues.
Mercury in Taurus “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – that’s the key to the way you think at a time like this. Practical, utilitarian ideas are the ones that make the most sense now – putting them to good use is a focus for you. Material things are foremost on your mind in many respects: an emphasis on the real rather than the ideal.
Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You’re a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative … perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.
Mars in Cancer Defensive, aren’t we? With this new cycle getting underway, protecting and preserving you and yours takes on a higher than usual priority. A sensitivity to the needs and wants of others and an appreciation for their frailties (as well as your own) makes you more cautious and conservative … you pick your battles with care.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
