The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, December 20th, 2016, at 8:56 PM EST. Early Thursday, the Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Virgo.
The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again. This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. What revelations did you have last week? What did they mean for you? What can be done now?
This phase of the Moon occurs at 29 degrees and 37 minutes of Virgo square the Sun at 29 degrees and 37 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 28 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) and 0 to 2 degrees of the Cardinal signs most significantly (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).
A FULL MOON occurred on Tuesday, December 13th, 2016, at 7:05 PM EST. On Wednesday afternoon, the Moon is full–the Gemini Moon exactly opposed the Sagittarius Sun.
The Gemini-Sagittarius polarity is a mental axis, where Gemini represents the “lower mind” and Sagittarius represents the “higher mind”. A Gemini Moon encourages us to think logically, while Sagittarius persuades us to think in a far broader manner. Sagittarius symbolizes the quest for meaning and ideas that expand upon the here and now. Gemini is quite comfortable in their immediate environment or neighborhood, while Sagittarius stimulates us to venture beyond. Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what the Full Moon invites us to do. This Full Moon is about communication, attitude, and our sense of adventure. Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the next two weeks, we will discover what this means for us. For now, we can’t sit on our feelings. We need to express them.
The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time–a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships. With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our own lives. However, these feelings and revelations are emotional ones, as there is a sense of emotions bursting forth into our consciousness. It’s time to express ourselves and to let things out of our systems. Of course, we might want to exercise some care while doing so, knowing that what is coming out of us is not particularly rational as yet. With the Sun moving away from an alignment with Saturn around the time of the Full Moon, and we can be determined to take care of business faced with our emotional discoveries.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 22 degrees and 26 minutes of Gemini opposite the Sun at 22 degrees and 26 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 18 to 26 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Sagittarius until the 21st when it enters Capricorn; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Aquarius; Mars is in Aquarius until December 19th, when it enters Pisces.
The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 21-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves. While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking. We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 19. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Capricorn from December 2-January 4. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism.
Venus is in Aquarius from December 7-January 3. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on his own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now. Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
Mars is in Aquarius from November 9-December 19. Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit-or-miss tactics, and impersonal expression of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. We are team players–cooperative and less concerned about personal power. We are attracted to unconventional methods and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective.
Mars is in Pisces from December 19-January 28. We tend to feel less motivated to go after traditional goals, and more motivated to pursue spiritual or emotional drives during this cycle. We dislike confrontation during this trend. Our output is variable rather than straightforward, and our energy is similarly up and down. We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. During this cycle, going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated!
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Libra on September 9th and will transit Libra until October 10, 2017. Read about Jupiter in Libra here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aquarius from December 7-January 3. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships. With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way, however. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing. Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena. With Venus in Aquarius, it’s best to go into dates with new people casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism simply won’t work. We may also find ourselves attracted to, or attracting, people who are not our “type”.
This week: Venus doesn’t form major aspects with the planets this week, but a trine to Jupiter comes into orb on the last day of the week, Saturday, the 24th. This is one of the most harmonious aspects. We’re gracious and forgiving with others. This is a friendly, generous, and optimistic time — excellent for reconciling or boosting a relationship.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus semi-square the Sun December 13-14. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Venus trine Jupiter December 24-25. Harmony and good will reign under this influence. Expansive feelings in love, and a feeling that anything is possible if we set our sights high enough, are experienced now. We are friendly, big-hearted, sociable, and optimistic. It is easy to make social contacts under this influence. Cheerfulness, trust, and confidence in love and social matters.
Venus sextile Uranus December 24-25. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus sextile Saturn December 25. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, December 18th, from 11:56 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 12:52 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, December 20th, from 8:56 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Libra at 9:40 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Thursday, December 22nd, from 2:32 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Uranus), until the Moon enters Scorpio the next day, Friday, December 23rd, at 9:33 AM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury semi-square Mars. We are quick-witted and ready to argue under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions, as we feel pressure to get things done quickly. We are inclined to be snappy and irritable, and we may too easily interrupt others rather than listen. Conflicts of interest are likely.
Mars semi-square Pluto. Our desires are intense and difficult to satisfy under this influence. A tendency to bully and confront may dominate. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted, or power struggles emerge. The trick is to remain flexible and to develop strategies for achieving our goals.
Saturn trine Uranus. This is a time when we’re more likely to be doing what we enjoy, and enjoying what we’re doing, particularly related to career, work, and life path matters, but extending to other areas of life as well. This can be a time of breakthroughs and new structures in our lives. Changes we make tend to be deliberate or calculated but also quick. Original ideas may take form, or they might be developed quite successfully now. There is an opportunity to combine stability and improvement or excitement with good results. The same can be said of innovation and tradition.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

What’s In Store By the Stars – Daily Astrology Trends
(as featured on our site’s main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)
DECEMBER 18
The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 12:52 PM EST, and we seek outlets for expressing our affection and creativity. The Moon’s trine to the Sun this morning promotes cooperation and confidence. We’re especially honorable, idealistic, and loyal now. The Moon opposes Mars just before it leaves Leo and enters Virgo, however, and with Mars moving through the last degree of the sign of Aquarius, we should be particularly concerned about impulsive decisions and actions. Additionally, with Mercury turning retrograde tomorrow, we may not know all the facts. The Moon in Virgo from 12:52 PM EST forward is more considered and practical energy, but it’s best to observe rather than jump to conclusions or into action.
A void of course Moon occurs from 11:56 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mars), until the Moon enters Virgo at 12:52 PM EST.
DECEMBER 19
Mars enters Pisces this morning, where it will transit until January 28th. We are less motivated to pursue traditional goals and more driven by spiritual or emotional goals during this cycle. Our energy is up and down or variable, and so is our output. Going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated! We tend to avoid confrontation, and we take an intuitive approach to pursuing our desires. We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. Mercury turns retrograde this morning and will be retrograde until January 8th, mostly in the sign of Capricorn, although it will retreat into Sagittarius on January 4th. While Mercury is retrograde in Capricorn, we may have little tolerance for small talk, and we tend to express ourselves after much deliberation. Plans may be considered then reconsidered. We are in a good position to reevaluate professional or life path plans and goals. We might explore what ambition or our reputation means to us. During the retrograde cycle, thinking is turned inward as we review and re-assess matters. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting. We look at the world a little differently–through different filters–and can come up with some very important inner revelations. It may be difficult to communicate them under this influence, but not everything needs to be rationalized. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, benefiting from keeping a journal, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication can re-connect us to other, possibly more meaningful, means of communication. Today as Mercury stations, there can be cloudy thinking and misunderstandings. This morning’s Mercury-Mars semi-square can add hectic and impatient energy to the mix. However, it can also stimulate us to get a move on or to stop procrastinating on a matter. The Moon is in Virgo all day.
DECEMBER 20
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until 8:56 PM EST, shortly before which the Last Quarter Moon is exact as the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Virgo. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some type of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t. This is in preparation for next week’s New Moon when something new is born once again. It’s not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. At 8:56 PM, the Moon enters Libra, and we find the most emotional satisfaction when our interactions and environment are felt to be balanced and harmonious. Pleasing others is a theme now, making it a good time for negotiations and peace-making.
A void of course Moon occurs from 8:56 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Libra at 9:40 PM EST.
DECEMBER 21
The Sun enters Capricorn today, where it will transit until January 28th. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order during this cycle. Mars forms a semi-square with Pluto this morning, and our desires are intense and difficult to satisfy under this influence. A tendency to bully and confront may dominate. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted or power struggles emerge. Deeper feelings arise suddenly, and possibly in a disruptive way. We may be overreacting or going to extremes. The trick is to remain flexible and to develop strategies for achieving our goals rather than acting in the heat of the moment.
DECEMBER 22
The Moon is in Libra all day, and we have a tendency to weigh all perspectives and to consider all possibilities. Moderating, negotiating, and compromise are themes today. The Moon aligns with Jupiter and plays into an exciting configuration that’s forming this week as it opposes Uranus and squares Pluto, and forms a sextile with Saturn and a trine with Venus. We can feel discomfort with situations that limit and restrict us, and ideally, this compels us to make constructive changes. We should stretch our usual boundaries to some degree, but the trick is to avoid taking on far too much. We recognize the need for changes in our relationships now.
A void of course Moon occurs from 2:32 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Uranus), until the Moon enters Scorpio the next day, Friday, December 23rd, at 9:33 AM EST.
DECEMBER 23
The Moon continues to transit Libra until 9:33 AM EST when it enters Scorpio. Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way, as well as passionate, strong-willed, and intense. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Vindictiveness and manipulation are some of the negative expressions of the Moon in Scorpio. The Moon harmonizes with the Sun and Mars, which are heading towards a sextile, exact this week. This is a good time for taking action, getting ahead, solving problems, competing, and taking the lead.
The Moon ends its void period when it enters Scorpio at 9:33 AM EST.
DECEMBER 24
A long-term aspect is exact today and is the first of three in a set: Saturn in Sagittarius forms a trine to Uranus in Aries. This exact will perfect again in May and November 2017. We have the opportunity to make changes and progress without sacrificing security and reliability. We can successfully apply new methods to old projects, or take a new, innovative idea and turn it into a workable project. There can be breakthroughs, new beginnings and structures in our lives, and success in business, science, and math. There is the ability to combine the progressive with the traditional, and there can be a better understanding between the young and the old. We can be committed and retain our independence. We might enjoy more freedoms or creative license in the work we do. Educational advances are possible now, and we may be updating our skills and knowledge. It’s an excellent time for updating a business, pursuit, or program. The Moon is in Scorpio all day, harmonizing with Mercury and Pluto in Capricorn as well as Neptune in Pisces. This is a time for insight into both professional and personal matters.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our “inner child”. It’s a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention–when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It’s a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others’ approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it’s passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won’t work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it’s an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
This Week’s Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends)
Sun in Sagittarius You’re now embarking on a trek into a land of dreams – not passive daydreams, but vibrant visions of what may be. The time has come to stop looking at the world as it is and asking why. Now’s the time to imagine the world as it could be, and the question has become: “Why not?” You also cannot do everything you imagine now, but you cannot do anything you don’t KNOW you can do – so believe, and dare to make it happen! This means expanding your mind, your belief system, your whole base of knowledge and experience. Time’s a wastin’ – let no grass grow between your toes!
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Mars in Aquarius The reformer, the inventor, the engineer, the revolutionary – these are important archetypes for you as a new cycle gets underway in your life. They are icons of the ambitions that stir you at a time like this. Independence, freedom from past patterns, and a daring readiness to innovate: such are the paths of achievement for you now.
Mars in Pisces There’s a martyr complex in the air, now that this new phase has begun in your life. How can you (or anyone) save the world? It’s a question you’ll probably ask yourself as this cycle continues. Defending the weak, undoing injustice, and tilting at windmills can be a big temptation. You might even win a few hands – but you’ll blister a couple if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Libra The ties that bind, the harmonious integration of opposites, the perfect balance: these are the keys to your greatest opportunities now. Marriage and other close personal relationships tend to offer bright prospects, and you have a deep yearning to experience the fulfillment they can bring.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
