A FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Friday, February 3, 2017, at 11:19 PM EST. On Friday night, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Taurus. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 15 degrees and 32 minutes of Taurus square the Sun at 15 degrees and 32 minutes of Aquarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 14 to 18 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.
A NEW MOON occurred on Friday, January 27th, 2017, at 7:07 PM EST. On Friday evening, a New Moon was exact when the Sun and the Moon met in the sign of Aquarius.
The New Moon occurred on Friday evening, marking the beginning of a new cycle. In the sign of Aquarius, friendship, brotherhood, group activities, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, humanitarian efforts, or joining a group will be a strong focus on a personal level. New beginnings regarding all of these matters are possible now.
This is a time during which we should solve problems that require thinking “outside of the box”; look to the future with a brand new, positive, and hopeful vision; brainstorm and socialize; focus on extending a friendly hand, receiving support, and expressing platonic love for those around us; give our emotions and passions a “break”, as we develop more objectivity and some detachment from past haunts; learn how something (or someone) works; revitalize ourselves through experiences that are new or simply different; reach out to people in our social circle and in our community, and recognize the value of our friendships and social networks; recognize that some level of detachment and distancing ourselves from our habits and attachment to the past will help us break away from destructive behaviors that are holding us back. With this potent Aquarius energy, we have the chance to make progressive changes in our lives. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 8 degrees and 15 minutes of Aquarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 4 to 12 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Aquarius; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Pisces until February 3rd, after which it’s in Aries; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19-February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and we strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
Mercury is in Capricorn from December 2-January 4 and then January 12-February 7. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism.
Venus is in Pisces from January 3-February 3. Pisces never sees the world in black-and-white terms. Rather, Pisces sees all the colors of the rainbow. With the goddess of love in Pisces, our love is all-embracing, we are able to forgive and understand, we are seducible and seductive, and we show compassion to our partners. Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach nevertheless, as there is a longing for something that is hard to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is allowing ourselves to be victimized or deluded, as well as evasiveness.
Venus is in Aries from February 3-April 2 and then April 28-June 6. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now. Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to Aries. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
Mars is in Aries from January 28-March 9. Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Libra on September 9th and will transit Libra until October 10, 2017. Read about Jupiter in Libra here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Pisces from January 3-February 3. Like Aquarius, Pisces love is universal. However, Pisces draws no bounds in love. With Venus in Pisces, we have compassion (and perhaps attraction) for those who are left out, overlooked, or victimized. We are self-sacrificing, and we have a hard time setting up borders. The walls go down, we have a hard time saying no (especially if our compassion is engaged), but we are also prone to avoiding all that makes us feel uncomfortable. Wishful thinking is one expression of Venus in Pisces. We can too easily believe what we want to believe. People can be hard to pin down, and love is hard to define under this influence.
This week: On Sunday, we can be particularly creative with one another if we focus on shared activities. However, there is some tendency to be confrontational. Handled well, and we can get some answers we need. Ultimatums should be avoided. On Monday and Tuesday, we’re open to love, commitment, and learning from one another.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Pisces A martyr complex, a love for the underdog, a search for your soul mate: such are the experiences associated with the new cycle you’re now just beginning. A yen for soul-stirring romance, a weakness for the weak, and a tendency to idealize people and relationships … very aesthetic, very other-worldly.
Venus in Aries Romance at the drop of a hat is part and parcel of the cycle you have just begun. Winning the hearts of others can be a challenge you’re eager to accept – and the thrill of the chase might be most of the fun. Is it the pursuit of happiness – or the happiness of pursuit?
Venus square Saturn January 27. Feeling unsatisfied, isolated, and unloved. Personal relationships are likely to be strained as we express our affections cautiously and sparingly. If we believe we are not getting what we want in love, we attract negative situations and challenges in our relationships. This is not a good time to begin a new relationship–new ones begun now are likely to be stamped with themes of duty and restriction.
Venus contraparallel Mars January 29. Passions are stimulated and intense. Fine line between love and hate. Competitiveness. Questions are raised or ultimatums made.
Venus parallel Chiron January 30-31. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus sextile Mercury February 10. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, January 29th, from 12:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:11 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, January 31st, from 12:36 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries at 4:47 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Thursday, February 2nd, from 11:51 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Taurus at 8:51 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Saturday, February 4th, from 5:42 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:45 PM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury conjunct Pluto. Mental activity can be intense at this time. We may uncover valuable information or gain understanding. Thoughts, ideas, and communications are more intense and focused. We are more able, and motivated, to find hidden meanings and to “cut to the chase”. Efficiency and relevancy become important to us. Our minds are investigative and probing, and we may be bent on revealing truths. Our persuasive powers, strategic thinking, and observational skills increase, but we may also be suspicious, manipulative, obsessed, or we might be involved in frustrating mental battles if we handle this transit improperly.
Mercury square Uranus. Our senses are stimulated, and we could have sudden flashes of insight or fresh new ideas. However, our ideas are not always received well by others and we can be scatter-brained. It’s a challenge to deal with routine matters or monotonous tasks under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. This is not a good time to be understood, so we may want to hold off presenting our ideas for the time being. New information can surface now that upsets the status quo, but can also act to stimulate our minds into new ways of thinking.
Mercury sextile Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it’s not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.
Mercury square Jupiter. Information overload is possible today. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. This is an unfavorable transit for travel. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate.
Venus semi-square Sun. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Mercury semi-square Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.

What’s In Store By the Stars – Daily Astrology Trends
(as featured on our site’s main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)
JANUARY 29
The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius until 11:11 AM and then enters Pisces. While there is an easygoing and laid back quality to a Pisces Moon, Mercury aligns with Pluto today, stimulating intense mental activity. Mercury was approaching a conjunction to Pluto but then turned retrograde on December 19th, and now the two finally meet. For some of us, plans started or considered then may now come together. We might uncover valuable information or gain insight into a matter now. This is a time for finding hidden meanings, although if this goes too far, we may be obsessed, manipulative, or paranoid. Increased tension or worry may motivate us to make useful changes, however. We are inclined to “cut to the chase” in our communications. Efficiency and relevancy become especially important to us. Our persuasive powers, strategic thinking, and observational skills increase, but we might also become involved in frustrating mental battles if we handle this transit improperly.
The Moon is void of course from 12:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:11 AM EST.
JANUARY 30
The Moon is in Pisces all day, and we are inclined to daydream and perhaps stray from our routine a little. A Pisces Moon is compassionate, perceptive, and adaptable. We are more idealistic, spiritually aware, and sensitive, and this is particularly pronounced this morning around the Moon’s conjunction to Piscean ruler, Neptune. Boundaries dissolve, and we’re disinclined to make definite or firm conclusions and decisions. Even so, the Moon’s cooperation with Mercury and Pluto today can promote clarity and concentration. This is a strong time for entertaining dreams and visions.
JANUARY 31
The Pisces Moon forms a square with Saturn this morning, reminding us of our duties or limits. The Moon aligns with Venus midday, and we begin to seek out pleasurable activities. The Moon enters Aries at 4:47 PM EST, stimulating a strong desire to start fresh, and its alignment with Mars tonight gives us a jumpstart. Mercury forms a square with Uranus, stimulating our senses, sudden flashes of insight, and fresh new ideas. However, there can be mental pressures experienced now. It can be difficult organizing our thoughts or dealing with routine matters under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. We may be jumping ahead of ourselves in our communications. This is not the time to be understood, so we may want to hold off presenting our ideas for the time being. New information can surface now that upsets the status quo, but can also act to stimulate our minds into new ways of thinking.
A void of course Moon occurs from 12:36 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries at 4:47 PM EST.
FEBRUARY 1
The Moon in Aries harmonizes with the Sun in Aquarius today, stimulating confidence, a strong sense of humor, and a spirit of independence. Mercury forms a sextile to Chiron, providing an opportunity period for opening up healthy dialogues. We can interpret the intention or meaning behind the words communicated, and we can effectively use words to heal and comfort others. We are approaching problems in a holistic manner, and problem-solving skills are high. This influence brings subtle but enhancing energy for communications. It’s a good time to speak of matters that are important to us.
FEBRUARY 2
Mercury forms a square with Jupiter today, and the Aries Moon plays into this aspect as it aligns with Uranus, opposes Jupiter and squares Mercury and we can be emotionally invested in our perceptions. This is a time when we are inclined to exaggerate or blow things out of proportion. Information overload is possible now, and it’s all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose for now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing now and a lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate, and even if we can’t, our attitude is positive. The Moon leaves Aries and enters Taurus at 8:51 PM EST. We crave predictability under the influence of a Taurus Moon.
A void of course Moon occurs from 11:51 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Saturn), until the Moon enters Taurus at 8:51 PM EST.
FEBRUARY 3
Just before it changes signs today, Venus forms a semi-square with the Sun. Irritations that seem to stem from others could be the reflection of inner uneasiness. We should look for creative solutions for dissatisfaction. Venus enters Aries today, where it will transit for longer than usual – now and until April 2nd, part of the time it will be retrograde, and then from April 28-June 6. While Venus is in Aries, we are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back–we’re not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Tastes are simple, but we can feel the need to fulfill them urgently. Tonight, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Aquarius Sun forms a square to the Taurus Moon. As much as we’re looking to make progress, we’re in need of some predictability on an emotional level. The Moon transits Taurus all day.
FEBRUARY 4
Mercury forms a semi-square to Neptune this morning, and we may not be thinking clearly, preferring our daydreams or distracted by them. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time and instructions misunderstood or missed. There can be mental tension and disorganization, making this a difficult time to get a clear message across. However, with the Moon’s trine to Mercury late afternoon, it can help that we’re conveying our intentions well in our communications. With the Moon in Taurus all day, we’re inclined to seek out predictability and comfort. Earthy activities and sensual pleasures appeal now more than usual.
A void of course Moon occurs from 5:42 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Gemini at 11:45 PM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We are not inclined to want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It’s a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We’re motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to start something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and “stop to smell the roses”. Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, short trips.
This Week’s Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends)
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all, they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Libra The ties that bind, the harmonious integration of opposites, the perfect balance: these are the keys to your greatest opportunities now. Marriage and other close personal relationships tend to offer bright prospects, and you have a deep yearning to experience the fulfillment they can bring.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
