The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 10:53 PM EDT.
On Wednesday night, the First Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Moon in Capricorn.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 5 degrees and 11 minutes of Capricorn forming a square with the Sun at 5 degrees and 11 minutes of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 14 to 18 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
The NEW MOON occurred on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at 1:30 AM EDT.
Early Wednesday, the New Moon occurred as the Moon aligned with the Sun in the sign of Virgo.
A time of new beginnings, this New Moon presents an excellent opportunity for us to formulate some goals regarding “all things Virgo.”
We’d do well to concentrate on new ways to get our day-to-day life organized. We might think about the keywords for this particular and earthy sign — such things as analytical, intelligent, reserved, critical, helpful, conscientious — and consider ways to incorporate these traits into our personalities. The New Moon in Virgo is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Virgin. These include building our powers of healthy, constructive discrimination; rolling up our sleeves and getting down to some serious work; beginning a new project that requires attention to details; making lists, actively ticking off completed activities, and taking pride in our “little” accomplishments; starting a health regime, researching nutrition and nourishment, and paying attention to our diet; setting up specific routines that will help us manage our lives in constructive and mindful ways; and handling the finer details of our day-to-day life in an organized, step-by-step fashion so that we can free our minds of clutter.
This New Moon occurs as Jupiter and Uranus move towards an opposition — an atmosphere that is a little too risky, disorganized, or chaotic for Virgo’s tastes — and the quincunx from Uranus to the New Moon emphasizes this awkward relationship.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 27 degrees and 27 minutes of Virgo conjunct the Sun, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 24 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Virgo until the 29th, when it enters Libra; Venus is in Virgo; Mars is in Virgo.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker. However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Virgo from July 25-August 31 and then September 9-29. When Mercury is in Virgo, precision in speech, thought, and process is now important to us. This is a time when we analyze and decide what is useful and what we deem to be impractical. Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules. Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in details. We should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in a too factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.
Mercury is in Libra from September 29-October 17. When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we are able to bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways of improving our negotiation skills. In an attempt to see both sides of any given situation, Mercury in Libra can be a vacillating energy. It can be more challenging than usual to make quick decisions, as we can sit “on the fence”. We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions in order to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves in such a way as to appear to be the “bad guy”. However, this is a good period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Virgo from September 19-October 14. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Mars is in Virgo from September 5-October 22. In Virgo, Mars is somewhat of a workhorse. We have a passion for details, as well as a need to do the right thing at just the right time under this influence. The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now. We are more precise and concerned about performance.
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Libra on September 9th, 2016, and will transit Libra until October 10, 2017, after which Jupiter will be in Scorpio. Read about Jupiter in Libra here. Read about the upcoming Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011 and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from September 19-October 14. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues. As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, nd can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we’re open to change, new ways of relating, and new ways of enjoying ourselves as Venus and Uranus form a parallel aspect. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important. On Friday, the annual Venus-Neptune opposition occurs and we may confront our illusions or spiritual and romantic needs through another person or a relationship that seems to hold a mirror up for us to see where or how far we’ve come. This transit can bring us face to face with our illusions in relationships. Emotions and feelings can be draining due to uncertainty and we may be left to feel that decision-making is too difficult. Neptune places a veil over our eyes and may seduce us into believing what we want to believe rather than what really is. If we haven’t been discriminating enough in love or with money, problems can surface now for resolution. Romantic and idealistic imagination is aroused now, and we may be especially put off by anything vulgar or harsh.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo September 19-October 14. If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto September 20-21. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus parallel Uranus September 24-25. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant-garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
Venus opposition Neptune September 29. Not a good time to start a new relationship, which could be characterized by disappointments, and the tendency to feel emotionally (and sometimes financially) drained by the partner. Uncertainties about existing love.
Venus trine Pluto October 3. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships are intense and deep, but not draining.
Venus parallel Mars October 5-6. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, September 24th, from 3:34 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Monday, September 25th, at 12:02 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, September 27th, from 7:09 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 12:25 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, September 29th, from 8:15 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Saturday, September 30th, at 12:41 AM EDT.
Void of Course Moon – September 2017
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waxing this week — a period that is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week from Friday, September 22nd, from approximately 1:45 PM EDT, until Sunday, September 24th, at approximately 3:30 AM EDT (although this occurs at the time of an approaching Mars-Neptune opposition). Another window occurs on Wednesday, September 27th, from approximately 3:10 AM to 7:05 AM, while the Moon is in Sagittarius. Another window (quite good) occurs from Saturday, September 30th, at approximately 12:45 AM EDT, until Monday, October 2nd, at approximately 7:10 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Aquarius. With this window, the Moon is waxing, forms a trine to the Sun, and the period ends with the Moon’s trine to Jupiter.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars opposition Neptune. This can be a confusing, devitalizing, and discouraging time. It seems that whatever we try to do goes nowhere or gets lost in a haze of misunderstanding. Taking time off, working quietly, or doing something primarily for the benefit of others without concern for personal gain is favored at this time. Disorganization, lack of drive, lack of forethought, impracticality, and carelessness characterize this energy. Energy and time are too easily wasted. Passive-aggressiveness. It’s hard to know what we want and where we’re headed under this influence.
Mars sesquiquadrate Uranus. A tendency to take risks, to feel restless, to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences.
Mercury square Saturn. Getting from point A to point B can be a challenge during this transit due to obstacles. Communications may be blocked or delayed, and negative thinking could dominate at this time. Projects we thought were complete may need revision, and others could appear overly critical, insensitive, or sarcastic. It’s difficult to trust our instincts, and we second-guess things automatically under this influence. Avoid signing on the dotted line at this time.
Jupiter sesquiquadrate Neptune. We may be misled easily under this influence–by others, or by our own unrealistic or inflated expectations. An inability to focus on important and realistic details, some disorganization, and extravagance or exaggeration are indicated. Routine seems to be particularly unsatisfying now. This is a time when we easily take a detour from a practical path. It can also be a time when we are disillusioned by something (or someone). Spiritual inspiration is a potential.
Mercury opposition Chiron. Misunderstandings in communications that occur now stem from taking things too personally. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now. Doubting our ability to make a clear cut decision comes from a feeling that opposing viewpoints hold the same weight, and thus an inability to choose sides. There can be a sense of shooting ourselves in the foot when we present our ideas or opinions, and a feeling of misrepresenting ourselves when we communicate can figure strongly now.
Mercury quincunx Uranus. It is difficult to get a point across without rubbing people the wrong way or misrepresenting ourselves. Uncertainty reigns today. Avoid making hasty decisions that you will later regret. Impulsiveness, disorganization, unreceptive to practical advice and/or your ideas are not well-received.
Venus opposition Neptune. Problems with love or money matters crop up because of our lack of the ability to discriminate at this time. It’s easy to see what we want to see, rather than what actually is. We may be more vulnerable emotionally, and thus more susceptible to deceit or self-deceit. Romantic and idealistic imagination is aroused now, and we may be especially put off by anything vulgar or harsh. If possible, put off major decision making regarding social and romantic involvements, as well as finances.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus. Unusual attractions (to people and things) can have us acting on a whim. We may deal with freedom versus closeness issues in our relationships. Relationships or finances can be unpredictable. Changes now can create fresh opportunities, however, that can add to our sense of joy and freedom.
Venus semi-square Jupiter. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. Problems in our personal life likely won’t get resolved under this influence. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong.

SEPTEMBER 24
The Moon spends another day in the sign of Scorpio. A Mars-Neptune opposition occurring today is a rather confusing and potentially devitalizing influence. It’s hard to know what we want and where we’re headed under this influence. We may question our goals and temporarily feel uninspired. Taking time off, working quietly, or doing something primarily for the benefit of others without concern for personal gain is favored at this time. Desires to escape important responsibilities or to play victim or savior should be quashed, but if we’ve been ignoring our needs for rest or spiritual nourishment, plans should be made to bring our lives into a better balance. Later today, Mars and Uranus challenge one another, and there is some tendency to act on impulses or to take risks.
The Moon is void from 3:34 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Monday, September 25th, at 12:02 AM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 25
Two minutes into the day, the Moon enters Sagittarius. Under this influence, we are emotionally bored with the mundane. A change of scenery or break in the routine appeals now. We’re particularly open to experimenting with new ways of relating and enjoying ourselves today. As optimistic as this energy is, a Mercury-Saturn square this morning can have us focused on the negative possibilities before we get to a place of realism. We can be preoccupied with serious or weighty issues. There can be difficulties getting our message across or physically getting somewhere. Negative thinking may figure strongly now. We may need to revise a project or idea, and people may seem overly critical, insensitive, or sarcastic. It’s difficult to trust our instincts.
The Moon is void until 12:02 AM EDT when it enters Sagittarius.
SEPTEMBER 26
We can feel energized and inspired creatively today, ready to fight for something we believe in. We find it easier to assert ourselves and our desires. It’s a good time for taking action towards healing and cleansing, as well as for guiding, teaching, and learning. The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, and we seek out truth, knowledge, and experience. We’re less concerned with the mundane details of our lives now. The Moon aligns with Saturn this evening and reminds us of our responsibilities or limitations.
SEPTEMBER 27
The Moon continues its transit of Sagittarius until 12:25 PM EDT when it enters Capricorn. Mercury’s opposition to Chiron can have us questioning our ideas or goals today. Misunderstandings in communications that occur now can stem from taking things too personally. Doubting our ability to make a clear-cut decision comes from a feeling that opposing viewpoints hold the same weight, and this can lead to an inability to choose sides. We may be shooting ourselves in the foot when we present our ideas or opinions, and we could be misrepresenting ourselves when we communicate. A new argument can surface that has us rethinking things, but could also lead to a breakthrough. Jupiter forms a tense angle to Neptune and moves into an opposition to Uranus, and we can easily mislead ourselves by our unrealistic or inflated expectations. It can be difficult to focus on relevant and realistic details, and we can be extravagant or impractical now. Routine seems to be particularly unsatisfying. Jupiter’s opposition to Uranus is an aspect that first formed precisely in December and then in March and is now exact for the final time in this set. This is a transit that cries out for freedom, particularly regarding our close relationships. We seek out partnership, but we are also holding on tightly to our individuality. We are looking for release or freedom from pressures, strains, and areas of life where we feel limited, restricted, and constrained. Events occurring now can bring surprises and sudden changes of hearts or paths. The desire to grow and make progress is adamant now. We can entertain new possibilities and find inspiration from unusual sources, but we can also be rebellious and impulsive under this influence. While this transit can give us just the right motivation to try something new or break free from a limiting situation, we should watch for glorifying all that is new and fresh to the point that we forget what’s truly important to us. The First Quarter Moon occurs tonight when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Moon in Capricorn.
A void of course Moon occurs from 7:09 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 12:25 PM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 28
This morning, Mercury forms a quincunx with Uranus, and it can be difficult to get a point across without rubbing people the wrong way or misrepresenting ourselves. We should watch for poorly-considered decisions, impulsiveness, and disorganization leading to waste or misunderstandings. Also today, Pluto reaches its direct station as it turns direct after many months of retrograde activity (since April 20th), adding intensity to all that we do and feel today and this week. Over the coming weeks and months, our power to make deep changes in our lives becomes less internalized and more insistent and direct. We are less likely to brood over changes that we feel have been thrust upon us and more likely to take things into our own hands and make necessary changes. The Moon also aligns with stationary Pluto today and spends the day in Capricorn.
SEPTEMBER 29
The Moon spends the day in Capricorn. Venus opposes Neptune today, and if we’ve been indiscriminate with money, pleasures, and relationships, problems can emerge now. Uncertainty in Venus-ruled areas of life (romance, social life, and finances) can be prominent now. There can be a veil over our eyes, and we can be seduced into believing what we want to believe rather than what really is. Romantic and idealistic imagination is aroused now, and we may be especially put off by anything vulgar or harsh. We need to assess areas of our lives that have become dysfunctional and, in the process, we may need to give up on an unrealistic ideal so that we can make gains. We may be more vulnerable emotionally, and thus more susceptible to deceit or self-deceit. If possible, it may be best to delay significant decision-making regarding social and romantic involvements, as well as finances, as we are unlikely to be seeing these things clearly. Also today, Mercury enters Libra where it will transit until October 17th. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. We’re diplomatic and friendly, and we aim to be fair. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills. In an attempt to see both sides of any given situation, Mercury in Libra can be a vacillating energy. Decisions don’t come easily or quickly. We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. However, this is a good period for considering others’ points of view.
A void of course Moon occurs from 8:15 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius tomorrow, Saturday, September 30th, at 12:41 AM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 30
The Moon ends its transit of Capricorn and enters Aquarius early in the day, at 12:41 AM EDT. The Aquarius Moon draws out our humanitarian impulses and desire for progress and innovation. Venus is semi-square Jupiter this morning, hooking into the energy of the recent Jupiter-Uranus opposition, and we may feel restless in our relationships or with entertainment and pleasures. When it comes to people and things, we should watch that we aren’t idealizing what we don’t have or something new and fresh rather than honoring what we already have. This can be a time of dramatic statements or impulsive purchases. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong. However, we can also tap into a need for change and improvement and tame our impulses to go overboard. It’s easier to settle down, go with the flow, and cooperate when the Sun and Moon form a trine this afternoon.
The Moon is void until it enters Aquarius at 12:41 AM EDT.

Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Virgo You’re coming into a new cycle centered on taking what you know and what you’ve got and then making the most of it in the real world. Assimilating information and experience, learning lessons and putting them into practice – that’s the focus as this cycle unfolds. It’s a time for prudence and stewardship, a time to tend to the details. You probably already have the grand ideals and visions: now you must get your hands dirty with the bricks and mortar and your mind busy with putting it all together.
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Virgo Mental discipline and patience are keynoted as you enter into a new cycle. Thinking things through, accounting for all the details, making careful measurements: these and similar experiences keep your mind active and involved. An interest in health and work may come to the fore.
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Mars in Virgo As a new cycle dawns in your life, there arises a passion for details, a need to do just the right thing at just the right time, and a burning desire to have a place for everything and everything in its place. This can be hard on the digestion if taken to extremes! The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now.
Jupiter in Libra The ties that bind, the harmonious integration of opposites, the perfect balance: these are the keys to your greatest opportunities now. Marriage and other close personal relationships tend to offer bright prospects, and you have a deep yearning to experience the fulfillment they can bring.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
