The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, October 16th, 2018, at 2:02 PM EDT.
On Tuesday afternoon, the First Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Moon in Capricorn.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 19 minutes of Capricorn forming a square with the Sun at 23 degrees and 19 minutes of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 21 to 25 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
The NEW MOON occurred on Monday, October 8, 2018, at 11:47 PM EDT.
On Monday night, a New Moon occurred in the sign of Libra. This is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Scales.
We have a chance to build our negotiating skills without compromising our principles or needs, and without resorting to appeasement. It’s a time to work on re-balancing our relationships and to recognize our partners as teammates rather than adversaries.
With this potent Libra energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives. Some of Libra’s “lessons” involve learning to make peace with those around us, as well as in our environments, establishing a sense of order and balance in our lives, and recognizing the value of partnerships. This is an ideal time to work on these skills. Libra has an innate ability for, and love of, synthesizing opposites. Peace and harmony are the goals, but there’s a fine balancing act involved along the way that requires some commitment and effort.
This New Moon brings fresh and creative energy into our lives, and more specifically, into our relationships. This is a cycle in which balancing our close personal relationships becomes an urgent desire. Negotiations may be especially effective, as we are inclined to assert our needs in ways that don’t offend others. However, with the New Moon forming a square to Pluto, we’re likely to encounter resistance from others and from within as our ambitions seem to compete or conflict with our relationship goals.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 15 degrees and 48 minutes of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 12 to 20 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Scorpio; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Aquarius.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker. However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Scorpio from October 9-31. When Mercury is in Scorpio, our thoughts and communications are more probing and intense. While Mercury in Libra urged us to find balance and to arrive at fair solutions, Mercury in Scorpio instinctively knows that life simply isn’t fair. Mercury in Scorpio seeks truths in all that is hidden and undercover. We tend to probe, observe, and focus our thoughts under this influence. Looking for motivations–the more deeply buried the better–satisfies an intellectual need now. Our thoughts are profound. We throw away superficial manners of communicating in favor of deep conversations. Scorpio is extremely sharp, profound, and analytical. Thinking is inclined to be one-track minded, focused, and even obsessive.
Venus is in Scorpio from September 9-October 31. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is a passionate, sensual, and intense energy. Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital.
Mars is in Aquarius from May 16-August 12 and September 10-November 15. Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit or miss tactics, and impersonal expression of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. We are team players–cooperative and less concerned about personal power. We are attracted to unconventional methods and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Scorpio on October 10th, 2017, and will remain in the sign until November 8th, 2018. Read about Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Taurus on May 15, 2018, and will transit Taurus until November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Scorpio from September 9-October 31 and then December 2, 2018, to January 7, 2019. If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience. Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio. We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
This week: Venus is retrograde again this week. (Venus is retrograde from October 5-November 16). Retrograde Venus aligns with Mercury on Monday, the 15th. We’re more inclined than usual to communicate our affections with Venus conjunct Mercury in passionate Scorpio. Nevertheless, Venus is still retrograde, and there can be some hesitancy when it comes to commitment or deeply loving connections. This can be a time for analyzing our past so that we can understand the present, particularly when it comes to our commitments, relationships, and satisfaction.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio September 9-October 31. This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus parallel Mars October 4-5. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.
Venus square Mars October 10. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus conjunct Mercury October 14-15. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.
Venus parallel Mercury October 22-23. A congenial time when we appreciate diplomacy and socialize more readily.
Venus sextile Saturn October 23-24. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus parallel Jupiter October 24-25. Venus parallel Jupiter We are charitable with others and have a stronger desire than usual to find meaning in our relationships. There may be some overstating or overindulgence now, however.
Venus conjunct the Sun October 25-26. Good relating is the focus, although some may find this energy superficial in that surface charm, diplomacy, and harmony is the goal. The pursuit of pleasure is emphasized.
Venus parallel Mars October 28-29. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, October 13th, from 8:59 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, October 14th, at 3:17 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, October 16th, from 5:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Wednesday, October 17th, at 3:36 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, October 19th, from 8:28 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 4:21 PM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury conjunct Venus. Lighthearted conversations, sociability, humor, cooperation. Good time for socializing and for communicating with ease, telling others how we feel, and negotiating. Mentally, we’re not as disciplined as usual, as we prefer to chat with others and to think about more “pleasant” things than work. Generally favorable for commerce.
Mars semi-square Chiron. We can be easily offended under the influence of this transit. Touchiness. Difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Chiron. Communications may be careless, hurtful or perceived as hurtful under this influence. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now. There may be impatience with rules, worry or guilty feelings, and conflicting viewpoints now.
Mercury trine Neptune. Imagination and intuition run high and are involved in decisions made today. We are in the right place at the right time. We may easily sense the thoughts and feelings of others. We express ourselves with subtle flair. Favors photography, the arts, poetry, fiction, spirituality, advertising, and promotion.
Mercury square Mars. Impatience, hastiness, and disagreements characterize this transit. This is an unfavorable time for any kind of meeting, starting a new project, and business proposals. We can be irritable and say all the wrong things. We may be competing for the floor when it comes to expressing our ideas, thoughts, and opinions, making it difficult to engage in healthy dialogue. Mental agitation could dominate. We may stir up controversy with what we say, or how we say it.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

OCTOBER 14
The Moon continues its transit of adventurous, truth-seeking Sagittarius until 3:17 PM EDT, after which the Moon transits Capricorn, aligning with Saturn in the sign. A responsible theme emerges and is reinforced by a Sun-Saturn quintile. This is a strong day for sorting, categorizing, and creating order out of chaos. We’re detail-oriented and have a stronger sense than usual of time and limits. We’re more aware of our image or reputation, as well as of our obligations. We are taking love seriously. There can be a willingness to make sacrifices if it seems the best way to make improvements in relationships and with money matters.
The Moon continues its void period until 3:17 PM EDT when the Moon enters Capricorn.
OCTOBER 15
A useful discussion about or examination of the past may be in focus today. Mercury’s conjunction to Venus can bring a light, detached feel to our interactions. We can communicate and negotiate with more ease, expressing how we feel. The Capricorn Moon supports this alignment through sextiles to Mercury and Venus. However geared we are on an emotional level to taking care of business, we’re not as disciplined as usual mentally as we prefer to chat with others and to think about more pleasant things than work. With Venus retrograde, there can be a tendency to talk about and analyze past relationships or problem areas in our relationships. New light may be shed on an old problem. The Moon in Capricorn is practical and resourceful.
OCTOBER 16
The First Quarter Moon is exact today with the Libra Sun’s square to the Moon in Capricorn this afternoon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon may now get off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. The Moon spends the day in Capricorn, and with its alignment to Pluto and sextile to Jupiter, fuels our drive to make improvements or to pursue our goals and ambitions. We’re also willing to put in the effort for a mental interest or project, and we may feel pleasantly dedicated to our work or ideas.
The Moon is void from 5:50 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Wednesday, October 17th, at 3:36 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 17
The Moon finishes its transit of Capricorn at 3:36 AM EDT when it enters Aquarius. The Aquarius Moon is forward-looking, progressive, and inventive. We’re inspired to improve and grow. A Pluto-Ceres square can point to the aggravation of tendencies to possessiveness or excessive attachment, however, which can drive the people or things involved away. We may worry about rejection or betrayal. We’re drawn to nurturing and supporting our partners these days, but fear of losing our position or power can interfere now. We should do our best to resist urges to stifle, control, and manipulate loved ones. The Moon’s square to Venus in Scorpio today can complicate matters with conflicting needs for emotional freedom and intimacy.
The Moon continues its void period until 3:36 AM EDT when it enters Aquarius.
OCTOBER 18
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Aquarius, aligning with Mars this morning, and we’re seeking satisfying channels for expressing ourselves. An idea or feeling can get us going – all worked up and ready to take action! A Mars-Chiron semi-square can point to increased sensitivity to what we may feel are slights or blows to the ego, however. There can be difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner, which can lead to some challenges but possibly also some interesting detours. We’re moving towards a Mercury-Neptune trine, however, and we’re inclined to make decisions based on our intuition, compassion, or imagination. We may easily sense the thoughts and feelings of others, and our words and thoughts can be more imaginative and colorful, subtle, or creative. We experience a sense of knowing and understanding with minimal explanation or instruction.
OCTOBER 19
While Mercury’s trine to Neptune this morning inspires fantasy and imagination, as the day advances, we can find ourselves mentally agitated. A Mercury-Mars square can stimulate impatience, hastiness, and disagreements. We may be competing for the floor when it comes to expressing our ideas, thoughts, and opinions, making it difficult to engage in healthy dialogue. We might stir up controversy with what we say, or how we say it. We could too easily found ourselves in disagreement with others, most likely because we’re communicating ineffectively or impatiently. Positively, this influence can light a fire under us for taking care of problem areas. If mental competitiveness leads to new thinking, this can be a productive time. The Moon’s move into Pisces at 4:21 PM EST can be a bit of a disorienting wind-down from the Mercury-Mars influence, but a wind-down nevertheless.
The Moon is void from 8:28 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 4:21 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 20
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces, stimulating our compassionate side, and also awakening our need for spiritual refreshment or escape of sorts. Ideally, this is a time for decompressing, winding down, and tapping into our intuition. We are more spiritually aware and sensitive now, but we can also avoid things! We’re inclined to fulfilled our emotional security needs through solitude or behind the scenes activities. This evening, we’re easily touched and swayed as the Moon aligns with Neptune, rousing our imaginations for better or for worse.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Scorpio A pronounced curiosity about taboos and mysteries plays a greater part in your life now. Your mind is on cutting through the nonessentials and penetrating to the core is where your mind is at now; you want to know who (or what) pulls the strings. Sex, taxes, investments, and others of life’s most compelling phenomena may captivate your interest more than ever before.
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Mars in Aquarius The reformer, the inventor, the engineer, the revolutionary – these are important archetypes for you as a new cycle gets underway in your life. They are icons of the ambitions that stir you at a time like this. Independence, freedom from past patterns, and a daring readiness to innovate: such are the paths of achievement for you now.
Jupiter in Scorpio The phase now beginning for you emphasizes fixing what is broken or unhealthy, thereby giving it a new lease on life. This is more than one person alone can handle, so the cooperation of others is essential. You give up something in order to get or create something, and you may not understand the reasons why at the time. Sex, money, power, and vitality become key issues.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
