The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at 8:33 PM EDT.
On Thursday evening, the Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Moon in Aquarius. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again. This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. What revelations did you have last week? What did they mean for you? What can be done now?
This phase of the Moon occurs at 28 degrees and 14 minutes of Aquarius forming a square to the Sun at 28 degrees and 14 minutes Taurus, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 26 to 30 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.
The FULL MOON occurred on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 5:42 PM EDT in the sign of Scorpio.
On the 10th, the Sun in Taurus opposed the Moon in Scorpio. The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time—a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships.
The Taurus-Scorpio polarity deals with the balance between all that is mine (Taurus) and all that is yours (Scorpio). It also emphasizes the concept of form (Taurus) versus transformation (Scorpio). While Taurus deals with matter, personal values, material goods, possessions, and security, Scorpio rules the destruction of form, shared possessions, change, and transformation. The Sun in Taurus encourages happiness with the simple, tangible things in life, while the Scorpio Moon draws our attention to complexities, intangibles, and mysteries. Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what the Full Moon invites us to do.
This Full Moon is about emotional declarations. Something has been building inside of us, likely of an intimate nature, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the next two weeks, we will discover what this declaration means for us. For now, we can’t sit on our feelings — we need to express them. The Full Moon illuminates this conflict between collecting and sharing.
With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our own lives. However, these new feelings and revelations are emotional ones, as emotions burst forth into our consciousness. It’s time to express ourselves and to let things out of our systems. Of course, we might want to exercise some care while doing so, knowing that what is coming out of us is new and not particularly rational as yet. Full Moons are about exposing or illuminating issues that are already there, but that have not yet been dealt with. Where does the Full Moon fall by house in your natal chart? Read more here.
This Full Moon occurs around the time of a Mercury-Uranus alignment, adding to the elements of surprise and revelation.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 20 degrees and 25 minutes of Scorpio forming an opposition to the Sun at 20 degrees and 25 minutes Taurus, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 17 to 23 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

May 10, 2017, 5:42 PM Sun Opposition Moon (Full Moon)

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Taurus until May 20th, when it enters Gemini; Mercury is in Aries until May 16th, when it enters Taurus; Venus is in Aries; Mars is in Gemini.
The Sun is in Taurus from April 19-May 20. In Taurus, the Sun is methodical, sensual, and receptive. The Sun in Taurus is most active when it is defending or resisting things! As the Sun moves through Taurus when plants take root, our determination and security needs are strong. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar, and values longevity. The shadow side of Taurus is possessiveness and bullheadedness.
The Sun is in Gemini from May 20-June 21. Knowledge and diversity motivate us with the Sun in Gemini. We are more sociable, intellectual, and insatiably curious under this influence. We tend to scatter our energies as a result of this curiosity and awareness of all of our options. We are more communicative and versatile, but we can also be unreliable.
Mercury is in Aries from April 20-May 16. When Mercury is in Aries, we are less concerned with objective viewpoints and explanations, and more concerned with reaching a decision…quickly! Our thoughts and ideas are pioneering, and we tend to speak more spontaneously and directly with the planet of communication in bold and assertive Aries.
Mercury is in Taurus from May 16-June 6. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, solid, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately under this influence, and our minds are oriented to the world of the five senses. We prefer the tried and true rather than new ways of thinking. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives, but we may be in danger of narrow, overly conservative, or rigid thinking.
Venus is in Aries from April 28-June 6. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now. Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to Aries. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
Mars is in Gemini from April 21-June 4. In Gemini, Mars is considerably more versatile and flexible–and considerably less determined and focused! Our interests become more diversified, possibly to the point of going off on so many tangents that we are scattered and ineffective.
Mercury is direct and is in its post-retrograde shadow until May 20th.
Venus is direct and in its post-retrograde shadow until May 18th.
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Libra on September 9th, 2016, and will transit Libra until October 10, 2017. Read about Jupiter in Libra here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aries from April 28 -June 6.
This week: Venus is still moving slowly but regaining speed. On the 20th, Venus moves out of its post-retrograde shadow and things seem to normalize. Venus opposes Jupiter on Thursday and Friday, and we can feel quite restless with anything in our relationships that have become expected or routine. There can be dramatic efforts to get one another’s attention or attempts to find more meaning in our connections. On Friday and Saturday, a semi-square between the Sun and Venus points to some restlessness, as we may be wanting more from our relationships but may not know exactly what it is, or we don’t know how to ask for it. We might want to watch for being so accommodating with others that we overlook our own needs – a position that is never healthy for ourselves or for our relationships.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aries Romance at the drop of a hat is part and parcel of the cycle you have just begun. Winning the hearts of others can be a challenge you’re eager to accept – and the thrill of the chase might be most of the fun. Is it the pursuit of happiness – or the happiness of pursuit?
Venus parallel Chiron May 9-10. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus opposition Jupiter May 18-19. We are easily bored with the everyday responsibilities and routines of our love lives and are now inclined to dramatize our lives. As a result, our love natures are strong but insatiable. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone, or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.
Venus semi-square the Sun May 19-20. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Venus square Pluto May 24-25. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, May 13th, from 10:16 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, May 14th, at 1:39 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, May 16th, from 6:24 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:51 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, May 18th, from 8:34 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:53 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, May 20th, from 11:40 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Sunday, May 21st, at 6:12 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury semi-square Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.
Sun quincunx Saturn. Doubts, the feeling of not being good enough, and lack of self-confidence might plague us under this influence. Lack of faith in ourselves and in life hinders our movements and initiatives.
Jupiter quincunx Neptune. There can be difficulties with limits and boundaries now. We may feel disorganized and it can be difficult to stick to a routine, or to find satisfaction in our current pursuits. There can be a strong desire or need to help others now, but we may not know how to do so and feel guilty for escapist tendencies or for not being as effective as we’d like. There is a tendency to take the easy way out, but consequences are likely to be faced by doing so. We may be misled by wishful thinking now or invest in impractical ideas and plans.
Sun sextile Chiron. An opportunity to find a sense of purpose or a “mission” arises now, increasing our confidence. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong. Problem solving is favored.
Saturn trine Uranus. This is a time when we’re more likely to be doing what we enjoy, and enjoying what we’re doing, particularly related to career, work, and life path matters, but extending to other areas of life as well. This can be a time of firsts in the primary structures of our lives. Changes we make tend to be deliberate or calculated, but possibly also quite quick. Original ideas may take form, or they might be developed quite successfully now. There is an opportunity to combine stability and improvement or excitement with good results. The same can be said of innovation and tradition.
Mars quincunx Pluto. A strong desire to prove ourselves may be at the root of confrontations and bull-headedness at this time. Avoid forcing issues.
Venus opposition Jupiter. The love nature is strong, but given to extremes. Over-inflated expectations and the tendency to overstate our affections are things to watch out for. We may overvalue something (or someone), perhaps in order to add more drama to our lives, or to feel bigger than life. We are sociable, in the mood to party, dramatic, extravagant, and inclined to overindulge as a result of this inner discontent and desire for more from life than daily routines.
Sun sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We may feel vague restlessness and discontent with life as it is. We want more, but perhaps too much. Overestimation, wastefulness, and exaggeration. Elevated moods, but unstable ones, as they may not be based on reality.
Venus semi-square Sun. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.

MAY 14
The Moon ends its transit of Sagittarius early in the day, at 1:39 AM EDT and spends the rest of the day in Capricorn. Under the influence of a Capricorn Moon, our sense of responsibility is stronger than usual, and we aim for efficiency in most areas of life. We seek to see the reality of a situation. With Mercury in minor challenging aspect to Neptune, however, we may struggle with our perceptions, which can be clouded by wishful thinking. We tend to favor daydreams or creative thinking more than dealing with facts and figures. It’s not an ideal time for formalizing agreements as we may not be paying close attention to details. However, a Mars-Pallas connection points to the courage and energy to back up our beliefs.
The Moon is void until 1:39 AM EDT, when it enters Capricorn.
MAY 15
The Moon is in Capricorn all day, aligning with Pluto and forming a square to Jupiter. While we may crave more order and predictability in our lives, outside forces seem to be stirring the pot. We might consider whether our ambitions are inflated or expectations are higher than they need to be, however, as these things may contribute to a feeling of discontent. Otherwise, the Moon in Capricorn is a steadying, grounding influence that is particularly useful for checking in with ourselves and our goals to see if we’re on track and performing well. The Moon is resourceful, practical, and sensible in Capricorn.
MAY 16
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn until 1:51 PM EDT, after which it transits Aquarius. Early in the day, Mercury enters Taurus, where it will transit until June 6th. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, stable, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate quite deliberately under this influence. We gravitate towards tried and true methods rather than seek out new ones. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives during this cycle, but we should watch for overly conservative or rigid thinking. The Sun and Saturn move towards a quincunx, exact early tomorrow but influencing us today. This can indicate temporary doubts. Lack of faith in what we are doing can temporarily hinder our movements and initiatives. We might now see the need to adjust our plans based on new responsibilities or a reality check.
A void of course Moon occurs from 6:24 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:51 PM EDT.
MAY 17
Jupiter forms a quincunx with Neptune this morning. This long-term aspect first formed on October 23rd, 2016, and will occur again on July 5th, 2017. There can be difficulties with limits and boundaries under this influence. We may feel disorganized, and it can be difficult to stick to a routine or to find satisfaction with our current pursuits. There can be a strong desire or need to help others now, but we may not know how to do so and feel guilty for escapist tendencies or for not being as effective as we’d like. There is a tendency to take the easy way out, but consequences are likely to be faced by doing so. Wishful thinking may mislead us, or we may be tempted to invest in impractical ideas and plans. The Moon is in Aquarius all day and its trine to Jupiter this afternoon stimulates happy feelings and faithfulness. We are tuned into the “big picture” and less inclined to worry about details.
MAY 18
The Sun forms a sextile with Chiron today, and we can feel a little stronger, more empowered, and purposeful as a result. An opportunity to find a sense of “mission” can arise now, increasing our confidence. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and others is strong. Problem-solving is favored with this combination as we see issues holistically. This increases after the Moon enters Pisces at 11:53 PM EDT. Also today, the Last Quarter Moon occurs at 8:34 PM EDT when the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Moon in Aquarius. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a possible crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge. We begin to see what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon when something new is born again. This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We’re also moving towards an exact Saturn-Uranus trine — a longer-term aspect that helps us to successfully marry the traditional with the new, the old with the new, and security with change or progress.
A void of course Moon occurs from 8:34 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 11:53 PM EDT.
MAY 19
There are a number of somewhat challenging aspects influencing the day. Mars is quincunx Pluto, and this might call up frustrations if we don’t feel in control or effective enough at asserting ourselves or getting what we want. There can be passive-aggressive, manipulative, compulsive or impatient behavior now. We don’t want help from others, yet we can feel singled out if we’re taking on everything. As Venus and the Sun move towards a semi-square, they both clash with Jupiter, pointing to possible excesses or exaggerations or a compulsion to do more and for our actions to be meaningful. We can feel some discontent and want to reach for something more or different. Our appetite for pleasure, love, or material things is big, but we may be given to extremes or excess. Over-inflated expectations and the tendency to overstate our affections are things to watch out for. We may overvalue something (or someone), perhaps in order to feel bigger than life. The inclination can be to overindulge as a result of this internal discontent and desire for more from life than the ordinary. Watch for elevated but unstable moods, overestimation, and wastefulness. The Moon is in Pisces all day.
MAY 20
A Sun-Venus semi-square occurring early in the day extends a discontented theme from yesterday a little while longer – what we want to do and think we should do can be at odds now. The Sun enters Gemini this afternoon, where it will transit until June 21st. Knowledge and diversity motivate us with the Sun in Gemini. We are more sociable, intellectual, and curious under this influence. We tend to scatter our energies as a result of this curiosity and awareness of all of our options. We are more communicative and versatile, but we can also be unreliable or unfocused. The Moon is in Pisces all day, encouraging an intuitive, compassionate approach to the day. However, the Moon gets between an applying Mars-Saturn opposition that will occur exactly on the 29th. While this aspect is not officially in influence, we get a taste of it now as we can face blocks to expressing ourselves. We may feel limited or restricted from going after what we want. However, our workarounds to blockages can be creative and open our eyes to new options if we are patient.
A void of course Moon occurs from 11:40 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Sunday, May 21st, at 6:12 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don’t want to plan ahead, and prefer to “wing it”.
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve “winging it”, travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don’t want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence–even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We are not inclined to want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It’s a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
This Week’s Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends)
Sun in Taurus The cycle now dawning in your life emphasizes stability, substance, practicality, and the concept of value – value in the material as well as psycho-spiritual sense. This marks a time of building to last, of appreciating the substantial rather than ephemeral. Consolidating past gains rather than focusing on radical new departures is likely to be a major theme for you during this cycle. Appreciating the finer things of life is another hallmark of this phase, which marks a time when you should be concentrating on “smelling the roses” rather than passing them by in such a hurry.
Sun in Gemini The cycle which begins for you now will be marked by a more intense focus on mental and communicative activity than you may ever have experienced before. It’s a time of more involvement with other people, a time for gathering information, and a time when you’re apt to be more on the go than ever. There is likely to be an emphasis on reading, writing, studying, and all forms of exchanging information with others in the years ahead – and it will all serve as a path for self-discovery and personal development.
Mercury in Aries New ideas and an independent or pioneering mental orientation take on more importance in your life at this time. Teaching, learning, communicating, and social contact have a way of outlining new directions in your life now, and there is much activity and involvement with these kinds of issues.
Mercury in Taurus “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – that’s the key to the way you think at a time like this. Practical, utilitarian ideas are the ones that make the most sense now – putting them to good use is a focus for you. Material things are foremost on your mind in many respects: an emphasis on the real rather than the ideal.
Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You’re a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative … perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.
Jupiter in Libra The ties that bind, the harmonious integration of opposites, the perfect balance: these are the keys to your greatest opportunities now. Marriage and other close personal relationships tend to offer bright prospects, and you have a deep yearning to experience the fulfillment they can bring.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
