The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at 3:52 PM EDT.
On Thursday afternoon, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Cancer forms a square with the Moon in Libra. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 27 degrees and 5 minutes of Libra forming a square with the Sun at 27 degrees and 5 minutes of Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 25 to 29 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
The NEW MOON SOLAR ECLIPSE occurred on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 10:48 PM EDT.
On the night of July 12th, the New Moon occurred in the sign of Cancer. This lunation is a Solar Eclipse, and its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Moon-ruled sign of Cancer, domestic issues, family, personal popularity, the public, women’s interests, safety, security, food, support, our past/roots/heritage, and emotional issues are likely a strong focus.
This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding all of these matters. Occurring in the sign of Cancer, we are called upon to feed our foundation–all of that which we call “home,” including the foundation we have built inside of ourselves, needs to be tended to and honored. We need to pay attention to our instincts, our deepest needs, and our feelings; and to recognize the importance of our family and our personal circle of friends and the security, sense of belonging, and safety we derive from them. We are called upon to get in touch with our vulnerability and our needs for intimacy, as well as opening ourselves up to accepting support from others; to offer and show support for others, without a hidden agenda; and we might begin a new project that involves improving the home itself, or improving domestic life in general.
With this potent Cancer energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters. Some of Cancer’s “lessons” involve learning to feed our souls, to honor our innermost feelings, and to get in touch with our vulnerability and dependency on others. We are reminded of our support system and our need for a sense of safety and security. If we focus too much on achieving our career objectives at the expense of building a solid sense of personal satisfaction, we eventually become ineffective both personally and professionally. This is because our push for results on a professional level will not bring us long-term success if we don’t know what it is we need for ourselves on a personal level.
Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown.
An eclipse occurs close to the nodal axis, and this eclipse is closer to the North Node. Eclipses close to the North Node tend to feel easier than those conjuncting or closer to the South Node, as there is a sense of moving forward instead of concentration on having to let go of something. Still, there is an element of the unknown involved that can worry some. However, this eclipse also opposes Pluto quite tightly, and we can feel pushed out of our comfort zones, and this leads to important changes and transformations. Note that in the last set of Cancer-Capricorn eclipses from 2009-2011, the Solar Eclipse on July 1st, 2011 also occurred in Cancer and opposed Pluto (although it was also involved in a difficult grand cross), and similar themes in the months following that eclipse may be in focus now and in the coming months.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Cancer in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. However, because this is the first of many in a series of eclipses falling in Cancer-Capricorn, we can extend this range much further. The last eclipse falling along this axis will occur in July 2020. Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will most feel its effects on a personal level. More about this Solar Eclipse.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 20 degrees and 41 minutes of Cancer forming a conjunction to the Sun at 20 degrees and 41 minutes Cancer, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 16 to 26 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Cancer; Mercury is in Leo; Venus is in Virgo; Mars is in Aquarius.
The Sun is in Cancer from June 21-July 22. We are self-protective and insular under this influence. Our attention turns to our nest–our families, homes, and anything that makes us feel “at home”, safe, and secure. Nurturing and taking care of our loved ones and our pet projects come into focus. Emotions run deep. We are more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon while the Sun is in Cancer.
Mercury is in Leo from June 29-September 5. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Venus is in Virgo from July 9-August 6. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Mars is in Aquarius from May 16-August 12 and September 10-November 15. Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit or miss tactics, and impersonal expression of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. We are team players–cooperative and less concerned about personal power. We are attracted to unconventional methods and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Scorpio on October 10th, 2017, and will remain in the sign until November 8th, 2018. Read about Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Taurus on May 15, 2018, and will transit Taurus until November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from July 9-August 6. If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
This week: On Sunday the 15th, there can be some awkwardness as our needs and desires don’t seem to mesh. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires are at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result. While it’s usually a small hiccup in an established relationship, this is a less-than-ideal transit under which to begin a new relationship. On Saturday the 21st, however, we’re open, things are flowing naturally, and we’re giving one another the benefit of the doubt. This is a time to expand our interests and romantic possibilities, too!
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo July 9-August 6. If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus trine Saturn July 13-14. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism and maturity in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor, and have much potential to last.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto July 13-14. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus quincunx Mars July 15-16. When we attempt to be friendly, we seem to miss the mark. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires are at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result. This is a less-than-ideal transit under which to begin a new relationship.
Venus sextile Jupiter July 21-22. This aspect generates a happy, friendly, and optimistic attitude. People are a little more outgoing and sociable. Favors travel, education, and culture. Romantic opportunities. Harmony and good will.
Venus opposition Neptune July 23-24. Not a good time to start a new relationship, which could be characterized by disappointments, and the tendency to feel emotionally (and sometimes financially) drained by the partner. Uncertainties about existing love.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, July 14th, from 7:12 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Sunday, July 15th, at 1:31 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, July 17th, from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Libra at 3:43 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, July 19th, from 3:53 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 9:14 PM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks you thought you finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hypersensitivity, and criticism.
Venus quincunx Mars. When we try to be friendly, we seem to miss the mark. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires are at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result.
Mercury quincunx Pluto. Something we write or say could trigger power struggles or hostility from others. We may be plagued with self-doubt in our attempts to make decisions. Decisions made now are unlikely to be objective. Re-assessing decisions we have made already, or adjusting our plans, may be in order. Second-guessing.

JULY 15
The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 1:31 PM EDT, at which time it enters Virgo, and we seek out activities that make us feel useful. A dynamic aspect between Mercury and Saturn today can point to communication blocks, restrictions, or inhibitions, however. We may need to go over something we previously thought was complete, return to a problem, deal with red tape, or face some skepticism or criticism. A quincunx from Venus (and Ceres) to retrograde Mars compounds this energy, introducing some difficulties, particularly in our relationships. There can be a clash of values that leaves us on the fence. Our romantic sensibilities and our desires may be at odds with one another, and problems (especially misunderstandings) in romantic and sexual relationships may result. Tension can result from conflicts between desires for independence and needs for nurturing or to nurture. We can feel tied down due to family obligations or our own requirements for comfort and safety, but not entirely confident about pursuing our desires, either! There can be off-timing in our interactions, as we may miss the mark.
The void Moon continues today until the Moon enters Virgo at 1:31 PM EDT.
JULY 16
A Mercury-Pluto quincunx today can point to some tensions related to what (or how) we communicate, which can trigger hostility, negative feedback, or perhaps power struggles. It can be difficult to make objective decisions now, or we may be revisiting past choices and adjusting our plans. We may second-guess others or our own choices now. Venus and Ceres align in the sign of Virgo later today, and we can enjoy helping others with information or our services. We may be feeling pleasantly attached, finding it natural and easy to nurture and support people in our lives. The Moon spends the day in Virgo, promoting our attention to the details of our daily lives.
JULY 17
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until 3:43 PM EDT, harmonizing with the Cancer Sun this morning, encouraging both confidence and cooperation. We’re more inclined to pull up our sleeves and get down to work than usual. We crave organization and practicality, and we want to get things accomplished. The Moon enters Libra at 3:43 PM, bringing our attention to relationships, balance, and harmony. Moderating, negotiating, and compromise are themes. We are especially aware of others’ points of view and the opposite side of the coin, which can lead to indecision. The Moon’s square to Saturn tonight might put a damper on our spirits temporarily as we are reminded of all we need to accomplish.
The Moon is void from 6:50 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Libra at 3:43 PM EDT.
JULY 18
The Moon spends the day in Libra, harmonizing with retrograde Mars in Aquarius very early today, and we may resolve a problem or return to an old hobby or unfinished activity with new energy. We can assert ourselves without stepping on others’ toes, and the Libra Moon helps us with the gift of diplomacy. The Libra Moon is diplomatic, equality-minded, and fair-minded. Under the influence of this Moon all day, we are more aware of the need for relationships and all that comes with maintaining them–compromising, negotiating, graciousness, and balancing. Putting aside our own emotions to “keep the peace” is easier now than usual, although we may feel some resentment if this isn’t returned to us towards the end of the day as the Moon approaches a square to Pluto.
The Moon is void until 3:43 PM EDT when it enters Libra.
JULY 19
At 3:53 PM EDT today, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Cancer forms a square with the Moon in Libra. As we become especially aware of differences, this can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth. We may be feeling ambitious and competitive. Things are beginning to take off or to turn a corner. The Moon continues its transit of peace-seeking Libra until 9:14 PM, after which the Moon moves through the determined, perceptive sign of Scorpio.
The Moon is void from 3:53 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 9:14 PM EDT.
JULY 20
The Moon spends the day in Scorpio, and while it forms a square to retrograde Mars this morning, stirring up buried frustrations, it harmonizes with Venus and aligns with Jupiter tonight, promoting warm cooperation and goodwill. Retrograde Mars aligns with the South Node of the Moon this morning, and we may be cycling back to a problem or situation that first emerged in early June. We should watch for stubbornly holding onto something that no longer supports our growth. The Moon-Jupiter alignment tonight also has the effect of magnifying our feelings and attachments, except that we can be exceptionally comfortable with our emotions now. A Mercury-Uranus parallel today promotes exciting ideas. We’re not interested in recycling old ideas now – we are embracing new concepts. Routines may feel particularly stifling today.
JULY 21
The Moon spends another full day in the sign of Scorpio, and we can be especially passionate, strong-willed, and intense. This is a healing and transformative energy, and an excellent time to clear our minds. Some tension is possible as the Moon squares Mercury this afternoon, however, and what we say may misrepresent what we feel. However, we head towards a sextile between Venus and Jupiter, exact early tomorrow, and we’re exceptionally forgiving and generous under this transit. This is a soft, pleasant influence that promotes cooperation, acceptance, inclusiveness, and optimism, particularly in our relationships. We are a little freer and more generous with our affections, and with our money, too. This is one of the favorite transits for entertaining and socializing. Optimistic spiritual energy is brought to relationships now. We seek a higher purpose or meaning through our connections and our values.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Cancer Being more in touch with your emotional roots is a keynote of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. This has to do with feelings, but it’s more than that: it’s about making the things you feel and care about a reality. At some levels, this means a greater focus on family life – parents, children, relatives, the whole domestic scene. On a somewhat broader scale, you’re likely to find that houses and other real property take on greater significance for you. Nurturing is where it’s at in your life now: making things grow and taking care of them, planting seeds that will develop and survive far into the future – that’s what it’s all about.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Mars in Aquarius The reformer, the inventor, the engineer, the revolutionary – these are important archetypes for you as a new cycle gets underway in your life. They are icons of the ambitions that stir you at a time like this. Independence, freedom from past patterns, and a daring readiness to innovate: such are the paths of achievement for you now.
Jupiter in Scorpio The phase now beginning for you emphasizes fixing what is broken or unhealthy, thereby giving it a new lease on life. This is more than one person alone can handle, so the cooperation of others is essential. You give up something in order to get or create something, and you may not understand the reasons why at the time. Sex, money, power, and vitality become key issues.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
