LAST WEEK: The NEW MOON SOLAR ECLIPSE occurred on Saturday, January 5th, 2019, at 8:29 PM EST.
An annular Solar Eclipse occurred on Saturday at 15 degrees and 25 minutes of Capricorn. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Saturn-ruled sign of Capricorn, public life, career, reputation, achievement, and accountability are in sharp focus. This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding all of these matters.
This is a time for setting practical, attainable goals; working on developing maturity and common sense in the personality; considering the future, and preparing for it; focusing on concrete ways of developing self- discipline and self-mastery; finding ways to give satisfying form to wishes; making commitments and recognizing responsibilities; accepting that we are limited, and that, ironically, some of our limitations truly free us to explore deeper dimensions of experience by offering us a secure foundation, and nurturing our dreams in a realistic fashion.
Capricorn teaches us that recognizing our limitations actually frees us to focus on what matters, where we are, who we are, and where we want to go. With the potent Capricorn energy of the Solar Eclipse, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters. Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Capricorn in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. However, because this is part of a series of eclipses falling in Cancer-Capricorn, we can extend this range further. The last eclipse falling along this axis will occur in July 2020. Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will most feel its effects on a personal level.
The eclipse point itself is in between Pluto and Saturn, and a feeling of being stuck can prompt a new beginning. Ambitions are strong, but so is pressure to perform, and perhaps a bit of paranoia, as well. The harmonious sextile to Neptune helps us access our intuition and compassion.
Solar eclipses occurred at approximately the same degree as this January 2019 eclipse on January 4, 1973, January 4, 1992, and January 4, 2011. It might help to think back to these periods and consider the themes that surrounded your life at that time in order to get a better understanding of what the current eclipse series might mean for you. Most recent previous eclipse sets falling along the Cancer-Capricorn axis occurred from July 2009 to July 2011, July 2000 to June 2002, July 1990 to December 1992, July 1981 to June 1983.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 15 degrees and 25 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 10 to 20 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
This week: The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Scorpio until the 7th, after which Venus is in Sagittarius; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 20. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Capricorn from January 4 to 24. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism.
Venus is in Scorpio from December 2, 2018-January 7, 2019. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is a passionate, sensual, and intense energy. Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital.
Venus is in Sagittarius from January 7-February 3. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind. Romantic adventures, as well as a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love, are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are things that take priority with Sagittarius.
Mars is in Aries from December 31-February 14. Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus returned to the sign of Aries on November 6th, 2018, for a four-month stay.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and continued its transit of Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Scorpio from December 2nd, 2018, to January 7, 2019. If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience. Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio. We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
Venus is in Sagittarius from January 7 to February 3, 2019. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. Truth and higher meaning are focal points for Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius is forward-looking, not very specific, outgoing, and energetic. Freedom is most important in our love relationships now. We take a happy and enthusiastic approach to love, and we might find too much intensity or seriousness depressing. We have a taste for the exotic as well as for adventure with Venus in Sagittarius. The shadow side of this position is restlessness, the inability to “settle down,” and endlessly searching for something bigger and “better.”
This week: Venus forms a semi-square to Pluto at the tail-end of the week, and this suggests some reticence with others if we’re feeling insecure or concerned about matters of trust.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio December 2, 2018, to January 7, 2019. This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus in Sagittarius January 7-February 2. A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Venus quincunx Uranus January 5. Impulsive spending, peculiar attractions, fear of commitment, freedom vs. intimacy issues. We might question whether we need more excitement in our relationships, or whether we need freedom from them, yet we don’t feel confident enough to rock the boat.
Venus semi-square Pluto January 12-13. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, January 7th, from 1:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:46 AM EST (brief!).
VOC Moon on Wednesday, January 9th, from 11:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces at 2:43 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, January 11th, from 9:24 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Saturday, January 12th, at 3:18 AM EST.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
This week, the Moon is waxing — a period that is generally considered favorable for new beginnings with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week from Monday, January 7th, at approximately 1:50 AM EST, until Wednesday, January 9th, at approximately 11:50 AM EST, while the Moon is in Aquarius. This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury square Mars. Impatience, hastiness, and disagreements characterize this transit. This is an unfavorable time for any kind of meeting, starting a new project, and business proposals. We can be irritable and say all the wrong things. We may be competing for the floor when it comes to expressing our ideas, thoughts, and opinions, making it difficult to engage in healthy dialogue. Mental agitation could dominate. We may stir up controversy with what we say, or how we say it.
Jupiter sesquiquadrate Uranus. This influence is a restless one. We could find it difficult to agree with others, or to find common ground. We need to be willing to make changes in our lives now, or change will be forced upon us. This is a rebellious, restless influence–one in which we should avoid making changes just for the sake of making changes. We might take risks (perhaps foolish ones) for the sake of freedom. This is not a good time for financial speculation or travel. This is a time during which we can open ourselves up to new ways of thinking. However, we could also too easily avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter.
Sun conjunct Pluto. We are strong-willed and focused under this influence. The need to gain more control over our lives motivates us. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

JANUARY 6
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Capricorn, and we’re in a strong position to consider our long-term or professional goals, ambitions, responsibilities, and performance. The Sun is parallel Saturn, reinforcing a responsible and serious theme. Even so, Uranus turns direct today after retrograde motion since August 7th and Uranus energy hangs heavy in the air this week. Uranian themes can dominate now. As the planet gains speed in the next few weeks, our urge to express our unique self, to take some chances or risks, to rebel, to listen to our instincts, and to stir up change are reawakened or turned outside of ourselves. Uranus is now finishing its last leg of the sign Aries before entering Taurus on March 6th for a more consistent stay.
JANUARY 7
The Moon ends its transit of Capricorn at 1:46 AM EST when it enters Aquarius. The Moon in Aquarius is impartial, kind, and progressive. It harmonizes with both Venus and Mars today, facilitating social connections and harmonious or creative interactions. Venus enters the sign of Sagittarius this morning and will transit Sagittarius until February 3rd. With this transit, romantic adventures, as well as a straightforward and even blunt approach to love, are on the agenda. We leave behind complexities and embrace directness and clarity. We take pleasure in seeking truth and higher meaning, and we’re open, sincere, and optimistic with others. This is not the best time for carefulness with money, but it is a strong time for enthusiasm and spirit. Today, we’re heading towards a Mercury-Mars square, and this influence can stimulate impatience or hastiness. We could too easily find ourselves in disagreement with others, most likely because we’re communicating ineffectively or impatiently. Positively, this influence can light a fire under us to take care of problem areas.
The Moon is void from 1:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:46 AM EST.
JANUARY 8
Mercury’s square to Mars perfects this morning, and we may feel rushed or harried. Tensions can brew if we are too quick to argue or draw a conclusion. Rushing conversations and abruptness with words or moves can cause problems now. We may be competing for the floor when it comes to expressing our ideas, thoughts, and opinions, making it difficult to engage in healthy dialogue. We might use this energy to fix a problem or to get something out into the open. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Aquarius, and we seek to be impartial. We’re fair and honest, and we’re drawn to new and unique ways of approaching the world around us.
JANUARY 9
Jupiter’s sesquiquadrate with Uranus today is a longer-term aspect that is the first of three while Jupiter transits Sagittarius this year (the second will happen in June, and the third and final will occur in October). With this influence, we may be feeling restless if our dreams are no longer fulfilling or inspiring us, and we should watch for the taking on of impractical ventures or unusual tangents with weak staying power. This influence can also remind us that taking on too many new projects through the enthusiasm generated by Jupiter can overload us and weigh us down, curtailing our freedom in other life departments. The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius today, harmonizing with Aquarian ruler, Uranus, until 2:43 PM EST, after which it transits Pisces.
The Moon is void from 11:53 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces at 2:43 PM EST.
JANUARY 10
The Sun and Pluto form a parallel aspect today and conjunction early tomorrow. This is a time when we seek more intensity from our lives and relationships. We’re persistent and ambitious now. The need to gain more control over our lives can feel pressing, and we should guard against temperamental behavior and decision-making. We are strong-willed, resourceful, and focused under this influence. We benefit most by keeping things to ourselves and not rushing forward prematurely. This influence brings the desire for self-mastery to our attention. There can be a small crisis that alerts us to an area of life that requires work, improvement, and transformation. The need to gain more control over our lives motivates us, although there can be some paranoia or extremes of thinking behind this. The focus should be on recycling, updating, revising, and eliminating so that we can grow, rather than starting something new or adding more to our plates. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces and aligns with Neptune this evening. We quickly tune into the vibrations around us, and we’re psychically open now.
JANUARY 11
The Sun and Pluto align early today, and this is a time of intensified ambitions. The Pisces Moon forms sextiles to both planets today after their aspect perfects, helping us carry forward lessons and insight from our discoveries. Ideally, we’ve learned more about our fears and areas of our lives where we’ve been overly attached, and we can find ways to manage them more effectively. This can be a time for letting go of wasteful or outdated endeavors, as well as for tying up loose ends. Our powers of observation are excellent right now, and it’s a good time to develop strategies in preparation for busier, more action-oriented days to come.
The Moon is void from 9:24 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Saturday, January 12th, at 3:18 AM EST.
JANUARY 12
The Moon enters Aries at 3:18 AM EST, and we have a strong desire to start fresh, to do something new, or to clean the slate. This is a pioneering position – we want to be first and come first with the Moon in Aries. The Moon forms a trine with Venus and aligns with Mars today, stimulating our creativity and encouraging us to pursue our desires. Later today and into tomorrow, we may be tempted to try to manipulate or control others and situations, which can lead to unnecessary troubles. Venus forms a semi-square with Pluto, and jealousies or possessiveness can emerge. As well, with Mercury and Saturn heading towards an alignment, conversations and thoughts can take on a serious tone.
The Moon ends its void period when it enters Aries today at 3:18 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all, they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
