First Quarter Moon
The FIRST QUARTER Moon occurs on Saturday, February 1st, 2020, at 8:42 PM EST.
On Saturday evening, the First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Taurus. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. This can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 12 degrees and 44 minutes of Taurus square the Sun at 12 degrees and 44 minutes of Aquarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 11 to 15 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Aquarius; Mercury is in Aquarius; Venus is in Pisces; Mars is in Sagittarius.
The Sun is in Aquarius from January 20-February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and we strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 16-February 3. When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Pisces from January 13-February 7. Pisces never sees the world in black-and-white terms. Rather, Pisces sees all the colors of the rainbow. With the goddess of love in Pisces, our love is all-embracing, we are able to forgive and understand, we are seducible and seductive, and we show compassion to our partners. Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach nevertheless, as there is a longing for something that is hard to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is allowing ourselves to be victimized or deluded, as well as evasiveness.
Mars is in Sagittarius from January 3 to February 16, 2020. With a Sagittarius Mars, our actions are motivated by our ideals. We are bothered by routine, quickly becoming restless if we feel confined. We have a love of adventure, and of conquest–this is the position of wanderlust. We start projects or challenges with gusto, although we may tend to abandon them rather quickly. This may be because we set our sights too high!
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Pisces from January 13 to February 7. Like Aquarius, Pisces love is universal. However, Pisces draws no bounds in love. With Venus in Pisces, we have compassion (and perhaps attraction) for those who are left out, overlooked, or victimized. We are self-sacrificing, and we have a hard time setting up borders. The walls go down, we have a hard time saying no (especially if our compassion is engaged), but we are also prone to avoiding all that makes us feel uncomfortable. Wishful thinking is one expression of Venus in Pisces. We can too easily believe what we want to believe. People can be hard to pin down, and love is hard to define under this influence.
This week: Methods, desires, styles, and values clash on Sunday, as Venus forms a square to Mars. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. On Monday, Venus’ yearly alignment with Neptune occurs, and we’re especially sensitive to and aware of beauty and spirituality. We’re seducible and can be seductive. This is a psychically open time, but also a period when we may be seeing what we want to see rather than what is. It can also be a highly romantic day, and we can be more understanding and compassionate with one another. On Saturday, we’re ready to dig a little deeper, and we’re also attracted to situations/pleasures/relationships/people with layers.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Pisces A martyr complex, a love for the underdog, a search for your soul mate: such are the experiences associated with the new cycle you’re now just beginning. A yen for soul-stirring romance, a weakness for the weak, and a tendency to idealize people and relationships … very aesthetic, very other-worldly.
Venus sextile Jupiter January 22-23. This aspect generates a happy, friendly, and optimistic attitude. People are a little more outgoing and sociable. Favors travel, education, and culture. Romantic opportunities. Harmony and goodwill.
Venus square Mars January 25-26. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from distinct differences between romantic and sexual needs. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, passionate, and invigorating.
Venus conjunct Neptune January 26-27. New and fresh beginnings on romantic levels characterize this transit. Heightened sensitivity to, and awareness of, beauty and spirituality. We are easily influenced, seducible and seductive, and given to strong powers of imagination. We are more attuned to the world of beauty and romance. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence as well. Psychic openness and compassion.
Venus parallel Neptune January 26-27.
Venus semi-square Uranus January 27-28. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness. A desire to experiment in the romance department may be fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying or frustrating.
Venus sextile Pluto February 1-2. Subtly powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions.
Venus sextile Saturn February 3. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus conjunct Chiron February 9-10. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus square true North Node February 12-13. There can be a lack of agreement, dissatisfaction stirred up, and a sense that our relationships are preventing our growth.
Venus parallel Chiron February 14-15. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus square Jupiter February 22-23. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships. As well, take what your partner says with a grain of salt. There is no malicious intent involved, but feelings of elation can cloud our judgment, and we can promise more than we can deliver.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, January 25th, from 2:07 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Sunday, January 26th, at 6:44 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, January 28th, from 8:08 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Aries on Wednesday, January 29th, at 6:51 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, January 31st, from 10:09 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Taurus at 7:28 PM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus square Mars. Passions run high under this influence. Sexual tensions and competitiveness are possible, and there can be conflicts that arise from differences between romantic and sexual needs. Be wary of making impulse purchases. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which need not be difficult. It can be stimulating, creative, and invigorating.
Venus conjunct Neptune. New and fresh beginnings on creative levels characterize this transit. Heightened sensitivity to, and awareness of, beauty and spirituality. We are easily influenced, seducible and seductive, and given to strong powers of imagination. We are more attuned to the world of beauty and romance today. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence as well. Psychic openness and compassion.
Mars square Neptune. Inspiration comes from unusual sources, but you have a hard time staying focused and organized. Energy may be variable. Intuition is strong, but may be faulty. Not a good time to begin a new project or affair.
Venus semi-square Uranus. Unusual attractions (to people and things) can have us acting on a whim. We may deal with freedom versus closeness issues in our relationships. Avoid impulse buys at this time, and hold off on decision-making with regards to finances. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness is probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye with a loved one, and we could be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results.
Mars sesquiquadrate Uranus. A tendency to take risks, to feel restless, to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences.

JANUARY 26
With today’s Venus-Mars square, we can feel some tension or dissatisfaction with the status quo. Ideally, this prompts creative improvements and changes. This square can awaken many urges and desires, but many of these may only be whims or distractions. Disagreements are possible with differences and contrasts standing out more than usual. A passive or soft approach may irritate, but an aggressive approach can be grating, too–we seem to have poor timing at the moment. We can be temperamental and sensitive. There can be a real discrepancy between values and desires, and passions run high. Be wary of making impulse purchases and relationship decisions under these conditions. There is an air of competitiveness under this influence, which may be challenging or refreshing, or perhaps a mix of both. The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius until 6:44 PM EST, after which the Moon transits Pisces.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Pisces today at 6:44 PM EST.
JANUARY 27
Venus forms its yearly alignment with Neptune today, and it occurs as Venus comes out of a square to Mars and as Mars is heading towards a square to Neptune. It’s a highly creative combination, although there is some tendency to struggle with the reality/fantasy of a situation, person, or relationship. The conjunction of Venus and Neptune in the sign of Pisces is a gentle, subtle, and imaginative influence. There is heightened sensitivity to — and awareness of — beauty and spirituality, and we can feel renewed on creative levels. We are easily influenced, seducible, and seductive. Our imaginations are big, for better or for worse. We are particularly attuned to the world of beauty and romance today. Psychic openness and compassion are themes in our interactions now. It can be a magical time on a romantic or social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence. As the day advances, we’re inclined to wrestle with our expectations. There can be a vague sense that our dreams, or a particular source of inspiration, are not quite fulfilling us as they once did. We should watch for difficulties with boundaries, rules, and limits in particular, as well as for attempts to take the easy way out, which will probably backfire under these conditions. Still, from disappointment, we can feel the inspiration to make improvements. The Moon continues its transit of Pisces all day.
JANUARY 28
With Venus semi-square Uranus and Mars heading toward a minor square to Uranus as well, the day holds some abrupt, changeable, rebellious, or unpredictable energy. We may be distracted by shiny things — all that’s brand new, different, or unusual. We can find ourselves following whims or restless until we recognize the need to freshen up our relationships or pastimes. Changes now can create fresh opportunities that can add to our sense of joy and freedom, but it can take some trial and error to understand our needs and wants today. The Moon spends the day in the adaptable, compassionate sign of Pisces.
The void Moon occurs from 8:08 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Aries on Wednesday, January 29th, at 6:51 AM EST.
JANUARY 29
The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until 6:51 AM EST, after which it transits pioneering Aries. The Moon in Aries is bold and forward-looking, and also very independent. We seek a fresh start now, and we’re quick to let go of the past. We want immediate results, and if the effect we make is not exciting enough right away, we might quickly drop a project or plan for another one. This energy is particularly prominent with a Mars-Uranus sesquisquare this morning. We may be itching for a change, but not entirely sure where to start. Of course, this can get us into a bit of trouble if we’re not mindful.
The Moon ends its void when it enters Aries at 6:51 AM EST.
JANUARY 30
The Moon spends the day in bold Aries. The Aries Moon is independent and impatient. With the Moon’s trine to Mars this afternoon, we may be feeling braver than usual. This influence heightens our feelings, awakens our impulses, and stirs our passions. We are more in tune with our natural impulses, and less inclined to think things through before taking action. We are more resourceful and independent, and less demanding of people around us.
JANUARY 31
The Moon continues its transit of Aries until 7:28 PM EST, clashing with Pluto and Saturn this morning. Aries is a brave and direct sign, and with the Moon here, we can be emotionally impulsive. However, we may face some blocks this morning as these transits can have the effect of spiritually or materially grounding us, but not very graciously. We are reminded to harness our energy and channel some of it into productive activities. The Moon moves into the tenacious sign of Taurus at 7:28 PM, and slowing down comes more naturally to us.
The Moon is void from 10:09 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Taurus at 7:28 PM EST.
FEBRUARY 1
The First Quarter Moon occurs today when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Taurus this evening. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. We’re made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. It can be a time of stress, clashing, and discord, but also of high energy, motivation, and growth. We’re heading toward a Venus-Pluto sextile, occurring very early tomorrow, that influences today, and we might settle into a more deliberate frame of mind. We can gain new insight into our relationships, money matters, and comfort or pleasure needs. Or, we take a comfortably strategic approach to these things. Our feelings are more focused and intensified in a generally pleasant and positive way. We seek depth of emotion and authenticity in our dealings.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Sagittarius Ideology is a keynote of the new phase you have begun – the power of ideas and the power they wield over people. Religious, cultural, or philosophical controversies and crusades have a way of stirring your blood. Travel and adventure are compelling temptations as you dare to test your mettle and stretch your horizons.
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
