The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 1:45 AM EST.
Early Monday, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Capricorn forms a square with the Moon in Aries. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 48 minutes of Aries square the Sun at 23 degrees and 48 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 22 to 26 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
PREVIOUSLY: The NEW MOON SOLAR ECLIPSE occurred on Saturday, January 5th, 2019, at 8:29 PM EST.
An annular Solar Eclipse occurred on Saturday at 15 degrees and 25 minutes of Capricorn. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Saturn-ruled sign of Capricorn, public life, career, reputation, achievement, and accountability are in sharp focus. This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding all of these matters.
This is a time for setting practical, attainable goals; working on developing maturity and common sense in the personality; considering the future, and preparing for it; focusing on concrete ways of developing self- discipline and self-mastery; finding ways to give satisfying form to wishes; making commitments and recognizing responsibilities; accepting that we are limited, and that, ironically, some of our limitations truly free us to explore deeper dimensions of experience by offering us a secure foundation, and nurturing our dreams in a realistic fashion.
Capricorn teaches us that recognizing our limitations actually frees us to focus on what matters, where we are, who we are, and where we want to go. With the potent Capricorn energy of the Solar Eclipse, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters. Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Capricorn in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. However, because this is part of a series of eclipses falling in Cancer-Capricorn, we can extend this range further. The last eclipse falling along this axis will occur in July 2020. Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will most feel its effects on a personal level.
The eclipse point itself is in between Pluto and Saturn, and a feeling of being stuck can prompt a new beginning. Ambitions are strong, but so is pressure to perform, and perhaps a bit of paranoia, as well. The harmonious sextile to Neptune helps us access our intuition and compassion.
Solar eclipses occurred at approximately the same degree as this January 2019 eclipse on January 4, 1973, January 4, 1992, and January 4, 2011. It might help to think back to these periods and consider the themes that surrounded your life at that time in order to get a better understanding of what the current eclipse series might mean for you. Most recent previous eclipse sets falling along the Cancer-Capricorn axis occurred from July 2009 to July 2011, July 2000 to June 2002, July 1990 to December 1992, July 1981 to June 1983.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 15 degrees and 25 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 10 to 20 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Sagittarius; Mars is in Aries.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 20. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Capricorn from January 4-24. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism.
Venus is in Sagittarius from January 7-February 3. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind. Romantic adventures, as well as a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love, are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are things that take priority with Sagittarius.
Mars is in Aries from December 31-February 14. Mars feels at home in one of the signs that it rules, Aries, and therefore its power is boosted. Our energy is spontaneous, forward-looking, and even courageous under this influence. Our competitive spirit is well-developed, and our goal is to win! We are active, single-minded, and confident. Our actions are direct–we instinctively find the fastest way to get from point A to point B. The shadow side of Mars in Aries is a tendency to be impatient, arrogant, impulsive, short-lived, unreflective, and self-centered.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus returned to the sign of Aries on November 6th, 2018, for a four-month stay.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and continued its transit of Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Sagittarius from January 7 to February 3, 2019. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. Truth and higher meaning are focal points for Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius is forward-looking, not very specific, outgoing, and energetic. Freedom is most important in our love relationships now. We take a happy and enthusiastic approach to love, and we might find too much intensity or seriousness depressing. We have a taste for the exotic as well as for adventure with Venus in Sagittarius. The shadow side of this position is restlessness, the inability to “settle down,” and endlessly searching for something bigger and “better.”
This week: Venus forms a trine to Mars in Fire signs this week on Thursday to Friday, and we’re in a great position to directly, confidently, and pleasingly (or attractively!) pursue our desires. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to spice up a relationship.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Sagittarius January 7-February 2. A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Venus semi-square Pluto January 12-13. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus trine Mars January 17-18. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.
Venus sesquiquadrate Uranus January 19-20. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness. A desire to experiment in the romance department may be fleeting and ultimately unsatisfying or frustrating.
Venus square Neptune January 20. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit–a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The “highs” of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying “lows” are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment.
Venus parallel the Sun January 21-22. A strong desire for harmony and comfort fill us now. We may be moved to express our affections.
Venus conjunct Jupiter January 21-22. We have large appetites for love and pleasure, and generosity of spirit as well. An excellent time (all things considered) to begin a new relationship, or renew an old/existing one.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, January 14th, from 10:56 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Uranus), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:31 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, January 16th, from 1:34 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Gemini at 8:01 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, January 18th, from 8:33 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Cancer at 10:45 PM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus semi-square Pluto. This influence can point to some underlying tensions in social interactions (looking for an ulterior motive or an agenda, suspiciousness) and relationships (possible jealousies). Passions run high and hot, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness run so close to the surface that others can almost feel the heat, and they are in direct proportion to our fear of losing something or someone dear to us.
Mercury conjunct Saturn. Our ability to concentrate and focus is enhanced now. There could be an increased need for solitude in order to think or work. Travel for business purposes is possible. Thinking in realistic and practical terms, and the need for tangible results for our efforts, is indicated. We might receive serious news or practical advice, or engage in an important conversation. This can mark the start of a new project that involves communications, such as writing, speaking, reporting, etc.
Jupiter square Neptune. We may be misled easily under this influence–by others, or by our own unrealistic or inflated expectations. An inability to focus on important and realistic details, some disorganization, and extravagance or exaggeration are indicated. Routine seems to be particularly unsatisfying now. This is a time when we easily take a detour from a practical path. It can also be a time when we are disillusioned by something (or someone). Spiritual inspiration is a potential.
Mercury sextile Neptune. Intuition runs high, we are more sensitive artistically, imagination is stirred, and we have an increased appreciation for subtleties. We are inspired and we are able to inspire others with our words.
Venus trine Mars. Romantic activity, sexual attraction, creative action and self-expression in business and the arts, active participation in social functions, and creative initiative are favored under this influence. It’s easy to act upon our social and romantic needs successfully.
Mercury conjunct Pluto. Mental activity can be intense at this time. We may uncover valuable information or gain understanding. Thoughts, ideas, and communications are more intense and focused. We are especially able–and motivated–to find hidden meanings and to “cut to the chase”. Efficiency and relevancy become important to us. Our minds are investigative and probing, and we may be bent on revealing truths. Our persuasive powers, strategic thinking, and observational skills increase, but we may also be suspicious, manipulative, obsessed, or we might be involved in frustrating mental battles if we handle this transit improperly.
Sun sextile Chiron. An opportunity to find a sense of purpose or a “mission” arises now, increasing our confidence. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong. Problem-solving is favored.
Sun square Uranus. We can’t expect much of anything when the Sun squares Uranus, except the unexpected! Disrupted routines and plans are in order, adn they help to stimulate the adoption of new approaches. During this transit, we feel the need for action, but if we don’t know where we’re headed, we might take the wrong turn. Unexpected changes in plans or events can test our patience, and we might feel a bit out of control. However, they could stimulate us to try new approaches and they certainly act to cut boredom. This transit could offer us the drive to do something new, but avoid making hasty major decisions for the time being.
Sun semi-square Neptune. Our willpower is low as we stray from our goals and temporarily lose focus. It’s difficult to formulate — or stick to — clear goals during this transit. Concentrating on artistic or spiritual pursuits is better than focusing on matters that require straightforward, factual thinking today. It can be difficult knowing where or how to direct our willpower under this influence. It’s also a challenge knowing where we stand with others. Avoid such things as scheduling surgery, important appointments, job interviews, or launches of new projects at this time.

JANUARY 13
Mercury aligns with Saturn in Capricorn this morning, and we’re inclined to think and communicate about serious matters, responsibilities, duties, and worries or grievances. Our ability to concentrate is enhanced now, possibly because circumstances call for it. There could be an increased need for solitude in order to think or work. This is a time for seeing things realistically and for their practical value, as well as of increased demand for tangible results for our efforts. We might receive serious news, complaints, or practical advice, or engage in a critical conversation. This can mark the start of a new project that involves communications, such as writing, speaking, reporting, etc. There might be a verbal or written commitment made now, or we could experience a form of reality check. Also today, however, is a Jupiter-Neptune square — a longer-term aspect that will perfect again in June and then September. This influence is considerably different, as it suggests a struggle with our expectations, faith, and dreams. We’re easily misled under this influence, whether by others or by our own unrealistic or inflated expectations. We may need to deal with the consequences of disorganization, extravagance, neglect, or exaggeration. The tendency for restlessness magnifies, and routine seems to be particularly unsatisfying now. This is a time when something or someone disillusions us. We need to watch for a tendency to evade and avoid things, as well as for writing ourselves new beliefs or philosophies that justify this avoidance. There can be a lot of wandering, meandering, and lack of groundedness happening with this influence. We might have troubles setting boundaries for ourselves. There is a need to come down to earth from time to time. Some routines, discipline, regularity, and rhythms should be enforced to counteract this tendency (and today’s Mercury-Saturn conjunction can help). Spiritual inspiration is a potential, however, as we shed false beliefs, expectations, and paths. The Moon spends the day in assertive, independent Aries.
JANUARY 14
The First Quarter Moon occurs early today when the Sun in Capricorn forms a square to the Moon in Aries. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action, after which we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. Even so, we have a stronger ability to direct our energies into meaningful activities with Mercury’s sextile to Neptune today. Our imagination is stirred, and we may have an increased appreciation for subtleties. We are inspired, and we can inspire others with our words. There can be psychic openness in our interactions. We can experience a sense of knowing and understanding with minimal explanation or instruction. Intuition is highlighted or awakened. The Moon continues its transit of Aries until 1:31 PM EST when it enters Taurus and a slower, more deliberate approach to the day is favored.
The Moon is void from 10:56 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Uranus), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:31 PM EST.
JANUARY 15
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Taurus, and we tend to crave comfort and predictability. Its trine to Saturn today has a way of providing these things, and its sextile to Neptune ensures we’re also attending to our spiritual, emotional, or mental health needs. Even so, the ability to see things clearly or rationally can be compromised by ego issues or lack of confidence with the Sun and Pallas in a square aspect today – something to watch for! We may need to back down in order to gain clarity.
JANUARY 16
With the Sun’s alignment to the South Node of the Moon, we should watch for holding onto something that no longer supports our growth only because it’s comfortable or familiar. If we’re looking for clarity, however, this is a time for getting a window into areas of our lives to which we cling too tightly, perhaps to our detriment. This may relate to fears of being dependent on others, a tendency to over-manage our lives and others’ lives, or to impose too strict standards for our performance or achievement. We may be pouring more energy into our responsibilities to the outside world and avoiding emotional needs in the process, and now is the time to recognize this possibility. The Moon continues its transit of stable Taurus until 8:01 PM EST, after which it transits communicative, curious, and clever Gemini. While still in Taurus, the Moon harmonizes with the Capricorn Sun via a trine aspect, promoting cooperation, loyalty, and practicality. We are especially concerned with our practical or financial goals now.
The Moon is void from 1:34 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to the Sun), until the Moon enters Gemini at 8:01 PM EST.
JANUARY 17
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Gemini, and we’re particularly curious, spending more “time” than usual in our minds. With the Moon opposite Venus and later, Jupiter, restlessness is stirred, and we can be tempted to go overboard to combat boredom, or we may be challenged to move out of our comfort zones on a mental level. We seek out nourishment from others, and we are more inclined to nurture and support others and projects today. Needs and cravings seem to be in harmony. Venus and Mars are moving toward a harmonious trine, and this creative influence encourages friendly competition. Our timing is natural in our relationships, with business affairs, and in the arts.
JANUARY 18
The Sun is square Uranus and sextile Chiron today, suggesting tension related to our will to perform, follow or uphold traditions, and achieve in contrast with our desire to express ourselves as individuals, authentically. The trick is to avoid overemphasizing the self or ego now as we recognize the need for change, growth, and improvement. A somewhat chaotic atmosphere may result, and it’s counterproductive. A better approach would be to identify areas that need to change and seek out a solution that isn’t so dramatic or abrupt that it works against us and our relationships. We should watch for being irresponsible in our rebellions, for example, and guard against temperamental behavior and decision-making. We are more inclined to act on a whim, and routines/plans are disrupted. These energies help to stimulate the adoption of new approaches. Fortunately, the Sun-Chiron connection increases our desire to learn and grow through our experiences. We also enjoy a Venus-Mars trine in Fire signs, spurring us on and encouraging the pursuit of our desires. We can feel inspired to create something unique. A Mercury-Pluto alignment is also influencing the day, and we might uncover valuable information or gain insight into a matter that’s important to us. This is a time for finding hidden meanings, although if this goes too far, we may be obsessed, manipulative, or paranoid, or inclined toward battles of words. Increased tension or worry may motivate us to make useful changes, however.
The Moon is void from 8:33 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Cancer at 10:45 PM EST.
JANUARY 19
The Moon spends the day in safe, emotional, and protective Cancer. The Sun is semi-square Neptune today, and our willpower may be on the low side as we stray from our goals and temporarily lose focus. It can be difficult to formulate — or stick to — clear goals during this transit. Concentrating on artistic or spiritual pursuits is better than focusing on matters that require straightforward, factual thinking just for now. This aspect reminds us to get in touch with our spiritual goals or ideals. Also influencing the day, Venus in minor square to Uranus can stimulate unusual attractions (to people and things) that might prompt us to act on a whim. We may deal with freedom versus closeness issues in our relationships. Relationships or finances can be unpredictable. With the Sun about to change signs as well, this is a time to watch for making poor, hasty decisions. Changes now can create fresh opportunities, however, that can add to our sense of joy and freedom.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
When the Moon is in Cancer
The restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.
The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all, they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Mars in Aries Fresh challenges and initiatives light your fires now, as a new cycle begins in your life – lots of energy, a powerful urge to be first or come out on top. Away with the old and on to the new – let no one and nothing stand between you and your objective! Headstrong impulses and rash courage can take you far … sometimes in harm’s way, if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance.
