First Quarter Moon
The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, December 15th, 2018, at 6:49 AM EST.
On Saturday morning, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Sagittarius forms a square with the Moon in Pisces. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 27 minutes of Pisces square the Sun at 23 degrees and 27 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 21 to 25 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.
LAST WEEK: The NEW MOON occurred on Friday, December 7th, 2018, at 2:20 AM EST.
Early Friday, December 7th, the New Moon was exact, when the Sun and Moon aligned in the sign of Sagittarius.
The New Moon occurred in the mutable fire sign of Sagittarius and represented a new beginning. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Archer – optimistic, enthusiastic, adventurous, honest, outspoken, independent – and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. Now, we can focus on goals that will increase our understanding and awareness, give us the courage to expand our horizons, and gain confidence and optimism from a broader perspective. We can too easily get lost in the details of mundane existence. With this potent Sagittarius energy, we can find ways to transcend these details of day-to-day life and nurture our faith, hope, and vision.
Because Sagittarius thinks in big terms, we may have a tendency to overdo our expectations – something to watch for. With the New Moon forming a square to Mars and Neptune as both bodies head towards an alignment, we should watch that we don’t go over the top or attach ourselves to impractical ventures. This is a creative time, but not especially realistic. We are setting the stage for reaping the rewards from our braveries, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 15 degrees and 7 minutes of Sagittarius conjunct the Sun at 15 degrees and 7 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 11 to 19 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces).

This week: The Sun is in Sagittarius; Mercury is in Scorpio until the 12th, when it enters Sagittarius; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Pisces.
The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 22-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves. While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking. We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.
Mercury is in Scorpio from December 1-12. When Mercury is in Scorpio, our thoughts and communications are more probing and intense. While Mercury in Libra urged us to find balance and to arrive at fair solutions, Mercury in Scorpio instinctively knows that life simply isn’t fair. Mercury in Scorpio seeks truths in all that is hidden and undercover. We tend to probe, observe, and focus our thoughts under this influence. Looking for motivations–the more deeply buried the better–satisfies an intellectual need now. Our thoughts are profound. We throw away superficial manners of communicating in favor of deep conversations. Scorpio is extremely sharp, profound, and analytical. Thinking is inclined to be one-track minded, focused, and even obsessive.
Mercury is in Sagittarius from December 12, 2018-January 4, 2019. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.
Venus is in Scorpio from December 2, 2018-January 7, 2019. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is a passionate, sensual, and intense energy. Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital.
Mars is in Pisces from November 15-December 31. We tend to feel less motivated to go after traditional goals, and more motivated to pursue spiritual or emotional drives during this cycle. We dislike confrontation during this trend. Our output is variable rather than straightforward, and our energy is similarly up and down. We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. During this cycle, going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated!
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Uranus transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus returned to the sign of Aries on November 6th, 2018, for a four-month stay.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and continued its transit of Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Scorpio from December 2nd, 2018, to January 7, 2019. If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience. Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio. We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
This week: Venus forms a sextile to Saturn this week, strongest on Saturday, December 15th. It’s a great time to show our love through our actions, commitment, and reliability or loyalty.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio December 2, 2018, to January 7, 2019. This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus contra-parallel Uranus December 7-8. Questions of freedom, change, specialness, and experimentation are raised in our relationships.
Venus sextile Saturn December 15-16. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron December 19-20. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus trine Neptune December 20-21. We perceive romantic situations as if they were “designed” just for us. A magical, romantic time. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. Romance is highly favored. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships.
Venus conjunct Ceres December 26-27. We can be feeling pleasantly attached, finding it natural and easy to nurture and support people in our lives, although we may take this a little too far.
Venus sextile Pluto December 28. Subtly powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, December 10th, from 4:27 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 6:40 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Thursday, December 13th, from 5:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:40 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Saturday, December 15th, from 6:49 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries at 7:44 PM EST.

This Week in Astrology Calendar: December 9 to 15, 2018
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury trine Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it’s not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.
Mercury quincunx Uranus. It is difficult to get a point across without rubbing people the wrong way or misrepresenting ourselves. Uncertainty reigns today. Avoid making hasty decisions that you will later regret. Impulsiveness, disorganization, unreceptive to practical advice and/or your ideas are not well-received.
Uranus semi-square Neptune. This is a time when we can feel particularly inspired, although we may feel restless if our dreams are no longer fulfilling us or keeping us hopeful. Watch for impractical ventures and unusual tangents that may not last.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

DECEMBER 9
Chiron turns direct today after retrograde motion since July 5th, and we can experience some emotional vulnerability. Emotional truths about matters we’ve been avoiding or confused about begin to emerge now and in the coming weeks. These may not always be comfortable, but they serve to motivate us to take appropriate action. Mercury and Chiron formed a trine just three days ago while both Mercury and Chiron were retrograde, and they now connect again in direct motion, opening our minds to learning from one another. We tend to focus on healing methods and holistic thinking. The Moon spends the day in Capricorn, and we can be more resolved, determined, and goal-oriented than usual.
DECEMBER 10
The Moon continues its transit of practical Capricorn until 6:40 PM EST, after which it travels through the sign of Aquarius. The Capricorn Moon hooks into the energy of the recent Mercury-Chiron trine, getting between it and effectively extending the open-mindedness vibe. The Aquarius Moon is forward-looking, progressive, and inventive. We’re inspired to improve and grow. There is some tendency to be a little unsettled on a mental level, however, as Mercury and Uranus head towards a quincunx, exact tomorrow morning.
The Moon is void from 4:27 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 6:40 PM EST.
DECEMBER 11
This morning’s Mercury-Uranus quincunx can complicate our interactions. It can be challenging to get a point across clearly or even kindly. There can be disorganization, a lack of receptiveness to practical advice, or unclear directions and instructions to deal with. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Aquarius, stimulating our progressive, inventive, and innovative side. The Aquarius Moon forms a sextile to Jupiter in Sagittarius, and our enthusiasm and idealism increase. Friends, community, groups, causes, and happiness goals can be in stronger focus now.
DECEMBER 12
Mercury first moved into the sign of Sagittarius on October 31st, but then turned retrograde on November 16th and retreated into Scorpio on December 1st. Now in Sagittarius again, Mercury will continue here until January 4th. Mercury in Sagittarius is curious, questioning, and brave with our thoughts and ideas. Our thinking is forward, faithful, and optimistic. We’re intuitive and bold, but we may not be very precise during this transit. Until the 24th, Mercury remains in its post-retrograde shadow, and we may be covering old ground. The Moon transits Aquarius all day, harmonizing with the Sun around midday, promoting cooperation and reconciliation. We are idealistic and broad-minded under this influence, enthusiastic about sharing ideas and visions with others.
DECEMBER 13
The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius until 7:40 AM EST, after which it moves through the sign of Pisces. The Moon’s squares to Mercury and Jupiter suggest some tension between our desire to speak out or make a stand and our urge to accept, understand, and go with the flow. Its trine to Venus helps us bond with others through shared feelings and warm gestures and kindnesses. With a Neptune-Ceres trine today, this is a time for enjoying emotional support to and from loved ones. We are more soft-hearted, ready to help, sympathize with, and give support to others. We find it easier to sense the feelings or needs of others, and with the Moon also in Pisces, our compassion is in full force now.
The Moon is void from 5:20 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:40 AM EST.
DECEMBER 14
The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces, and we are more idealistic, spiritually aware, and sensitive. This morning, its alignment with Neptune tends to magnify Piscean qualities. Later today, however, the Moon aligns with Mars, and we’re more inclined to want to act on our feelings, fantasies, and inspirations than we are to simply experience them. A Uranus-Neptune semisquare, exact tomorrow morning, also comes into play, and there can be restless stirrings as we seek more meaning, excitement, or inspiration from our projects.
DECEMBER 15
Uranus and Neptune form a semi-square this morning. This long-term transit first formed in August 2017 and will continue to perfect until May 2019. While this aspect is in play, we seek inspiration, although we may feel restless if our dreams are no longer fulfilling us or keeping us hopeful. We should watch for speculative ventures and whims, as well as unusual tangents that don’t have staying power. The First Quarter Moon occurs today with the Sagittarius Sun’s square to the Moon in Pisces. The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until 7:44 PM EST when it enters the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, and we seek a fresh start.
The Moon is void from 6:49 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries at 7:44 PM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Sagittarius You’re now embarking on a trek into a land of dreams – not passive daydreams, but vibrant visions of what may be. The time has come to stop looking at the world as it is and asking why. Now’s the time to imagine the world as it could be, and the question has become: “Why not?” You also cannot do everything you imagine now, but you cannot do anything you don’t KNOW you can do – so believe, and dare to make it happen! This means expanding your mind, your belief system, your whole base of knowledge and experience. Time’s a wastin’ – let no grass grow between your toes!
Mercury in Scorpio A pronounced curiosity about taboos and mysteries plays a greater part in your life now. Your mind is on cutting through the nonessentials and penetrating to the core is where your mind is at now; you want to know who (or what) pulls the strings. Sex, taxes, investments, and others of life’s most compelling phenomena may captivate your interest more than ever before.
Mercury in Sagittarius A time of expanding your mental horizons is at hand. Religion, philosophy, law, and education are some of the things that may have special importance for you now. Being in touch with faraway people and places satisfies an intellectual yearning – curiosity will take you anywhere and maybe everywhere.
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Mars in Pisces There’s a martyr complex in the air, now that this new phase has begun in your life. How can you (or anyone) save the world? It’s a question you’ll probably ask yourself as this cycle continues. Defending the weak, undoing injustice, and tilting at windmills can be a big temptation. You might even win a few hands – but you’ll blister a couple if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
