A FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, December 26th, 2017, at 4:20 AM EST. On Tuesday morning, a First Quarter Moon occurs, when the Sun in Capricorn forms a square with the Moon in Aries. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 4 degrees and 47 minutes of Aries square the Sun at 4 degrees and 47 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 3 to 7 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.
The NEW MOON occurred on Monday, December 18th, 2017, at 1:30 AM EST.
Early Monday, the New Moon was exact, when the Sun and Moon aligned in the sign of Sagittarius.
The New Moon occurred in the mutable fire sign of Sagittarius and represents a new beginning. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Archer – optimistic, enthusiastic, adventurous, honest, outspoken, independent – and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. Now, we can focus on goals that will increase our understanding and awareness, give us the courage to expand our horizons, and gain confidence and optimism through a broader perspective. We can too easily get lost in the details of mundane existence. With this potent Sagittarius energy, we can find ways to transcend these details of day-to-day life and nurture our faith, hope, and vision.
Because Sagittarius thinks in big terms, we may have a tendency to overdo our expectations – something to watch for. Saturn’s alignment with the New Moon helps us keep things realistic, but with Saturn at the end of its transit of Sagittarius, we may feel some pressure to make changes. Our new beginnings get off to a serious and slow start, even though we may want to push harder. With the New Moon forming a trine to Uranus, we’re inclined to be a little adventurous and optimistic as well, setting the stage for reaping the rewards from our braveries, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 26 degrees and 31 minutes of Sagittarius conjunct the Sun at 26 degrees and 31 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 23 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) and approximately 0-1 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).

The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Sagittarius; Venus is in Sagittarius until December 25th, after which Venus is in Capricorn; Mars is in Scorpio.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21, 2017 – January 19, 2018. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Sagittarius from November 5-January 11. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.
Venus is in Sagittarius from December 1-25. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind. Romantic adventures, as well as a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love, are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are things that take priority with Sagittarius.
Venus is in Capricorn from December 25-January 17. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions is increased. We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships.
Mars is in Scorpio from December 9-January 26. In Scorpio, Mars is driven and focused on getting what it wants. We are persevering, single-minded, and strong. The desire to experience our emotional depths, as well as the urge to penetrate the surface of life in order to explore deeper levels of existence, is powerful. We are fascinated with what others tend to repress, and are drawn to experiencing and understanding these things. We are less inclined to avoid important issues now. In some ways, we are attracted to crisis, as we see crisis as transformative and emotionally exciting. We would rather feel extreme emotions than nothing at all, as mediocrity or the “middle road” is felt to be unsatisfying.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Scorpio on October 10th and will remain in the sign until November 8th, 2018. Read about Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011 and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Sagittarius from December 1-25. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. Truth and higher meaning are focal points for Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius is forward-looking, not very specific, outgoing, and energetic. Freedom is most important in our love relationships now. We take a happy and enthusiastic approach to love, and we might find too much intensity or seriousness depressing. We have a taste for the exotic as well as for adventure with Venus in Sagittarius. The shadow side of this position is restlessness, the inability to “settle down”, and endlessly searching for something bigger and “better.”
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we’re looking at our attachments and affections a little more seriously. When it comes to finances and relationships, we may find we need to make a choice to limit a pleasure or indulgence. We might need to sacrifice a material benefit for a spiritual good (or vice versa). Extravagances have a way of catching up with us and buckling down is necessary, but we generally feel good about making a mature choice now.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love ’em: that’s what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so – but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.
Venus trine Uranus December 20. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus conjunct Saturn December 24-25. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; thus we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Renewed ties to old friends or lovers are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing relationships.
Venus semi-square Jupiter December 25. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus sextile Neptune January 2-3. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, December 24th, from 9:48 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Monday, December 25th, at 7:28 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, December 27th, from 3:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Uranus), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Thursday, December 28th, at 1:24 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, December 29th, from 9:02 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini the next day, Saturday, December 30th, at 3:32 AM EST.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars sesquiquadrature Chiron. We can be easily offended under the influence of this transit. Touchiness. Difficulties expressing our anger or desires in a direct manner.
Venus conjunct Saturn. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; or we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Financial discipline, realism, and maturity are possible now. We are more likely to be conservative when it comes to spending. Sound judgment may be exercised. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Support from older people or authority figures may come by way of solid advice or tangible help. Renewed ties to old friends are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing friendships.
Venus semi-square Jupiter. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. Problems in our personal life likely won’t get resolved under this influence. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong.
Mars trine Neptune. We act on our intuition now, sexual fantasies are strong, we strive towards all that is boundless, and our creative impulses are potent. We are less tense and driven, and more relaxed. “What will be, will be” is the attitude now. Inspiration can be found now. This transit favors dancing, swimming, photography, arts, and entertainment.

DECEMBER 24
This morning, a minor square between Mars and Chiron can point to easy triggers – we can be touchy and quick to feel offended or overwhelmed. We can find it difficult to express our anger or desires in a direct, straightforward manner under this influence. The Moon in Pisces (all day) doesn’t help with directness or clarity. However, it’s excellent for visualization and, as the day advances, we’re in great shape for applying the Pisces Moon’s increased intuition to our projects or goals. We’re perceptive and compassionate, and also quite willing to lend a hand.
The Moon is void from 9:48 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Monday, December 25th, at 7:28 PM EST.
DECEMBER 25
Venus enters the sign of Capricorn shortly into the day and will transit the sign until January 17th. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions increases. We value enduring relationships and connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships during this cycle. Venus meets Saturn shortly after it enters Capricorn since Saturn just recently began its longer-term transit of the sign. Venus also forms a semi-square to Jupiter today. We may be viewing or taking our attachments and affections a little more seriously. When it comes to finances and relationships, we may need to limit a pleasure or indulgence, or sacrifice a material benefit for a spiritual one (or vice versa). Extravagances have a way of catching up with us and buckling down is necessary, but we generally feel good about making a mature choice now. We may be experiencing a new sense of realism in our relationships. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or a loved one, or we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. This can be a time for bonding more strongly with loved ones through the sharing of a responsibility, concern, or dilemma. The Moon continues its transit of compassionate Pisces until 7:28 PM EST, after which we’re more likely to want to take action, make a change, or start fresh with the Moon in Aries.
The Moon ends its void period when the Moon enters Aries at 7:28 PM EST.
DECEMBER 26
The Moon spends the day in bold, assertive Aries, and clashes with the Sun in practical Capricorn this morning. This is the time of the First Quarter Moon, and there is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles. We can feel especially ambitious or driven. We’re in excellent shape for stirring up new ideas and plans now, but this is not the most socially graceful or warm time. Even so, the Aries Moon harmonizes with Mercury in Sagittarius tonight, helping us find common ground and opening up the lines of communication. We’re enjoying more honesty now.
DECEMBER 27
The Moon spends the day in Aries, and its alignment with Uranus this afternoon encourages our spontaneous and independent side. However, we’re tapping into a lovely Mars-Neptune trine that forms exactly shortly into tomorrow, but influences today. This influence is good for feeling inspired, letting go of anger, and the softening of our dispositions. Creative arts, particularly physical ones, are favored. It’s better to wind down or act on our creative visions, dreams, or compassion now.
The Moon is void from 3:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Uranus), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Thursday, December 28th, at 1:24 AM EST.
DECEMBER 28
The Moon leaves Aries and enters Taurus at 1:24 AM EST. Through much of the day, the Moon forms easy aspects to the major planets, up until tonight when it opposes Mars, challenging us to step outside of our comfort zones. For the most part, we’re likely to find it easy to express and satisfy our extra needs for predictability, comfort, and leisure today. We’re in better shape for accepting the realities that the recent Venus-Saturn alignment brought to light, and for making things work for us as we sense more illuminations to come with Venus approaching the Sun. The Moon in Taurus is content, sensual, earthy, and sensible.
The Moon ends its void period when the Moon enters Taurus at 1:24 AM EST.
DECEMBER 29
With the Moon in Taurus, we are inclined to stick with what we know, keep status quo, and keep things simple. Common sense tends to rule today, save for this morning when the Moon opposes Jupiter and we’re tempted to go overboard to combat unrest. We tend to preserve our poise if faced with external stresses and pressures. Earthy activities and sensual pleasures appeal now more than usual, and we find a sense of peace and contentment with that which is familiar and reliable. Finances and possessions might come into stronger focus today.
A void of course Moon occurs from 9:02 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini tomorrow, Saturday, December 30th, at 3:32 AM EST.
DECEMBER 30
The Moon continues its transit of Taurus until 3:32 AM EST, after which it moves through the sign of Gemini. The Moon in Gemini is a mental, curious, friendly, and sometimes nervous or fickle energy. We have a stronger need to communicate and to express our ideas today. We adapt quickly to change, and in fact, we crave surprise, novelty, and intelligent responses in others. A semi-sextile between Mercury and Jupiter also points to some inability to settle on a particular idea, opinion, or project. However, we’re thinking positively, and we bounce back quickly from disappointment. As the day advances, we are imaginative, creative, and communicate warmly and considerately.
The Moon ends its void period when the Moon enters Gemini at 3:32 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
When the Moon is in Gemini
Our basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, spirited, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.
The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, cafes, light and airy meetings, short trips.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Sagittarius A time of expanding your mental horizons is at hand. Religion, philosophy, law, and education are some of the things that may have special importance for you now. Being in touch with faraway people and places satisfies an intellectual yearning – curiosity will take you anywhere and maybe everywhere.
Mars in Scorpio Tear it down and build it up again, reach in and pluck out the offending element: that’s what the new cycle you have entered is like. Power becomes a compelling idea, perhaps even an aphrodisiac – and you’ve got a stronger than usual supply of it now. Use it, don’t abuse it – or you might find that it’s a two-edged sword!
Jupiter in Scorpio The phase now beginning for you emphasizes fixing what is broken or unhealthy, thereby giving it a new lease on life. This is more than one person alone can handle, so the cooperation of others is essential. You give up something in order to get or create something, and you may not understand the reasons why at the time. Sex, money, power, and vitality become key issues.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
