The NEW MOON/Solar Eclipse occurs on Thursday, December 26th, 2019, at 12:13 AM EST.
An annular Solar Eclipse occurs early Thursday at 4 degrees and 07 minutes of Capricorn. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the Saturn-ruled sign of Capricorn, public life, career, reputation, achievement, and accountability are in sharp focus. This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding all of these matters.
This is a time for setting practical, attainable goals; working on developing maturity and common sense in the personality; considering the future, and preparing for it; focusing on concrete ways of developing self- discipline and self-mastery; finding ways to give satisfying form to wishes; making commitments and recognizing responsibilities; accepting that we are limited, and that, ironically, some of our limitations truly free us to explore deeper dimensions of experience by offering us a secure foundation, and nurturing our dreams in a realistic fashion.
Capricorn teaches us that recognizing our limitations actually frees us to focus on what matters, where we are, who we are, and where we want to go. With the potent Capricorn energy of the Solar Eclipse, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters. Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Capricorn in our charts are likely to occur over the course of the next 3-6 months. This eclipse is part of a series of eclipses falling in Cancer-Capricorn. The last eclipse falling along this axis will occur in July 2020. Not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will most feel its effects on a personal level.
The eclipse point itself is conjunct Jupiter and trine Uranus, pointing to a real feeling of hope and meaningfulness regarding our new beginnings. We’re excited to make improvements.
Most recent previous eclipse sets falling along the Cancer-Capricorn axis occurred from July 2009 to July 2011, July 2000 to June 2002, July 1990 to December 1992, and July 1981 to June 1983. Read more about this eclipse.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 4 degrees and 7 minutes of Capricorn conjunct the Sun at 4 degrees and 7 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 0 to 8 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Sagittarius until the 28th when it enters Capricorn; Venus is in Aquarius; Mars is in Scorpio.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 20. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Sagittarius from December 9-28. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence.
Mercury is in Capricorn from December 28, 2019-January 16, 2020. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism.
Venus is in Aquarius from December 20-January 13. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on his own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now. Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
Mars is in Scorpio from November 19, 2019-January 3, 2020. In Scorpio, Mars is driven and focused on getting what it wants. We are persevering, single-minded, and strong. The desire to experience our emotional depths, as well as the urge to penetrate the surface of life in order to explore deeper levels of existence, is powerful. We are fascinated with what others tend to repress, and are drawn to experiencing and understanding these things. We are less inclined to avoid important issues now. In some ways, we are attracted to crisis, as we see crisis as transformative and emotionally exciting. We would rather feel extreme emotions than nothing at all, as mediocrity or the “middle road” is felt to be unsatisfying.
Jupiter entered Capricorn on December 2nd, 2019, and will transit the sign until December 19th, 2020. Read more about the Jupiter in Capricorn transit.
Saturn transits Capricorn until March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aquarius from December 20, 2019, to January 13, 2020. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships. With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way, however. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing. Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena. With Venus in Aquarius, it’s best to go into dates with new people casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism simply won’t work. We may also find ourselves attracted to—or attracting—people who are not our type.
This week: Early Sunday, we can be dodging commitments, preferring to keep our options open. On Saturday, we’re amorous, ready to take action on our feelings.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus semi-square Neptune December 20. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus sextile Chiron December 20-21. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.
Venus square Uranus December 21-22. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus parallel Mars December 28-29. Favors romantic and sexual relationships. Intense passions.
Venus semi-square Chiron January 2. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus semi-square Jupiter January 7-8. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus sextile Uranus January 14-15. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus parallel Uranus January 14-15. We embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit. Peculiar, sudden, or avant-garde attractions. This is an exciting but unstable energy. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, December 22nd, from 10:27 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mars), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Monday, December 23rd, at 11:35 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, December 25th, from 6:19 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 4:46 PM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, December 27th, from 4:03 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Saturday, December 28th, at 12:21 AM EST.
December 2019:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week until Thursday when the New Moon occurs, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details). The Moon is waxing after the New Moon on the 26th, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, again with exceptions.
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from approximately 5:00 PM EST on Tuesday, December 24th, until approximately 6:15 AM EST on Wednesday, December 25th while the Moon is in Sagittarius. Note that because this window occurs shortly before a Solar Eclipse/New Moon, it’s best to unwind and avoid major new beginnings.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus square Uranus. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness are probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. Hold off on decision-making with regard to finances.
Mars sextile Pluto. We are able to successfully focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want without stepping on others’ toes under this influence.
Sun square Chiron. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong, but may be hampered by a lack of confidence or a fear of being different. We might experience a lack of faith in our own decisions. We could too easily follow others’ leads due to self-doubt, or simply to please them and out of fear of asserting our own desires.
Sun trine Uranus. An original, unique approach to life is in order with this transit, and works to our benefit. Flexibility is the key to success at this time, and pleasant changes are in store. We may make some creative changes and discoveries, experiment with new possibilities, or invent a new way of doing things. This is a dynamic and exciting period, one in which taking advantage of unusual or unconventional opportunities may reap rewards.
Sun conjunct Jupiter. Vitality increases as we build our confidence. We feel more generous, optimistic, and sociable under this influence. We might hunger for increased recognition and respect, and, with our generous attitude and concern for others’ well-being, we might just get what we want. This is a good time to take steps to grow something–our business, our significant relationships, and so forth. This transit also favors legal, educational, religious, and cultural endeavors.

DECEMBER 22
While the morning’s Venus-Uranus square points to standoffishness, a Mars-Pluto sextile prepares us for the upcoming Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, which will occur on the 26th. With this aspect, it’s natural to go after our goals and satisfy our desires, and we’re better at strategy. Ambitions and determination increase to pursue our goals. We’re getting in touch with what we want and devising plans to pursue it. We may be focusing on redoing or reworking something from the ground up. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Scorpio, aligning with Mars, also encouraging us to reach into our depths and get a little closer to understanding and exploring our needs and desires. This transit awakens emotional desire and stimulates some level of urgency.
The void Moon occurs from 10:27 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mars), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Monday, December 23rd, at 11:35 AM EST.
DECEMBER 23
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 11:35 AM EST when it enters Sagittarius. A Sun-Chiron square can point to insecurity or uncertainty about our direction, convictions, or purpose. A dip in confidence or faith in our resolutions or principles can lead to following others’ leads, which can later be regrettable. We’re pulling out of our funk by early afternoon with the Moon’s trine to Chiron. By tomorrow, the Sun’s trine to Uranus is sure to encourage us to detach ourselves just enough to free ourselves from limiting circumstances. The Sagittarius Moon invites us to have a forward-looking attitude as the day progresses.
The void Moon continues only until the Moon enters Sagittarius today at 11:35 AM EST.
DECEMBER 24
The Sun’s trine to Uranus today suggests that flexibility is the key to success, and pleasant changes may be in store. This aspect brings out the visionary in us. We may make some creative changes and discoveries, experiment with new possibilities, or invent a new way of doing things. Taking advantage of unusual or unconventional opportunities may reap the rewards. An original, unique approach to life is in order and works to our benefit. This energy serves to detach us just enough to be able to embrace change or to move forward in some manner. It’s also a good day for creative exchanges and ideas. The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, and a change of scenery or break in the routine appeals now. We’re particularly open to experimenting with new ways of relating and enjoying ourselves today.
DECEMBER 25
The Moon continues its transit of adventurous Sagittarius until 4:46 PM EST, after which it transits industrious Capricorn. The Moon’s trine to Uranus tonight helps us detach enough to enjoy ourselves more fully. We’re also quite open to new ideas and methods. Very early tomorrow, a Solar Eclipse will occur in the sign of Capricorn, and today, it makes sense to wind down or unwind. Fortunately, we have a Sun-Neptune quintile to help us with this. We’re gracious and giving one another the benefit of the doubt.
The Moon is void from 6:19 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 4:46 PM EST.
DECEMBER 26
A Solar Eclipse occurs at 12:13 AM EST in the sign of Capricorn, and new beginnings or a fresh approach to our career, social standing, or attention to structure and organization are in order. This is a time for setting practical, attainable goals, making commitments, recognizing responsibilities, and nurturing our dreams with particular attention to realism. Capricorn teaches us that knowing our limitations frees us to focus on what matters, where we are, who we are, and where we want to go. With the potent Capricorn energy of the Solar Eclipse, we have the chance to make essential changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. The eclipse point itself is conjunct Jupiter and separating from a trine to Uranus, and we’re feeling particularly hopeful and hungry for meaning. This eclipse is one of several in a set of Cancer-Capricorn eclipses, the first of which occurred in July 2018, and the last of which will happen in July 2020. The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn all day, keeping our focus on priorities and practicalities.
DECEMBER 27
The Sun forms its annual conjunction with Jupiter today, this year in the sign of Capricorn, and we can be especially aware of our desire to excel. This is a time of discovery and a renewed sense of joy, faith, and optimism. Vitality increases as we build our confidence. We’re more generous, optimistic, and sociable under this influence. We might seek increased recognition and respect, and, with our generous, liberal attitude, this may very well be forthcoming. It’s an excellent time to take steps to grow something important to us. We can feel determined and confident about making profound, long-lasting changes to improve our lives. This transit also favors reasonable legal, educational, religious, financial, and cultural endeavors. We value integrity, patience, reflection, and wisdom. Fortunately, this Sun-Jupiter alignment’s impact is stronger and more long-lasting since it occurs so close to yesterday’s Solar Eclipse. The Moon continues its transit of practical Capricorn, all day.
The Moon is void from 4:03 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Saturday, December 28th, at 12:21 AM EST.
DECEMBER 28
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn until 12:21 AM EST, after which the Moon transits Aquarius. We’re more earnest, friendly, and principled than usual. Our interest in our social life, new ideas, and progress increases, particularly around the Moon’s alignment with Venus. We thrive on intellectual stimulation, change, and unusual or unconventional experiences. Just before the day ends, Mercury enters Capricorn, where it will transit until January 16th. While Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is systematic, and our focus is sober and practical. It’s easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes most valuable to us. We should be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking and of coming across as cold or harsh during this cycle.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Aquarius today at 12:21 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Sagittarius A time of expanding your mental horizons is at hand. Religion, philosophy, law, and education are some of the things that may have special importance for you now. Being in touch with faraway people and places satisfies an intellectual yearning – curiosity will take you anywhere and maybe everywhere.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Mars in Scorpio Tear it down and build it up again, reach in and pluck out the offending element: that’s what the new cycle you have entered is like. Power becomes a compelling idea, perhaps even an aphrodisiac – and you’ve got a stronger than usual supply of it now. Use it, don’t abuse it – or you might find that it’s a two-edged sword!
Jupiter in Capricorn Respect, status, and achievement are central goals for you as a new phase begins in your life. Creating a structure to empower and maintain your ideals and principles becomes a high priority, an article of faith. By taking on greater responsibilities of this kind, you become an inspiration to others. Ambition unlimited always ends in defeat.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
