The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at 1:31 PM EDT.
On Wednesday afternoon, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Leo forms a square with the Scorpio Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 14 degrees and 56 minutes of Scorpio square the Sun at 14 degrees and 56 minutes of Leo, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 13 to 17 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
This week: The Sun is in Leo; Mercury is in Cancer; Venus is in Leo; Mars is in Leo.
The Sun is in Leo from July 22-August 23. In Leo, the Sun is proud, outgoing, and playful. The Leo Sun is intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. It’s time to shine, add a touch of color and drama to our lives, and perform. Like the flowers and fruit of the season—blossoming and ripened—this is a time when we want to enjoy ourselves and express ourselves. We are more generous and grand in our gestures and attitudes. On the shadow side, we can also be self-centered and vain.
Mercury is in Leo from June 26-July 19 and then August 11-29. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Mercury is in Cancer from July 19-August 11. When Mercury is in Cancer, we move from the desire for quantity to the need for quality in terms of the information we are attracted to. We think, speak, and take in information on a deeper, more instinctive level now. We have less interest in what is universal, and more interest in what affects us personally and what affects the people around us. Our thoughts are colored by our emotions, so it is more challenging to be objective.
Venus is in Leo from July 27-August 21. We take pride in love, and we are generous with our money as well. This is a warmhearted, teasing, expressive, proud, and extravagant placement for Venus. Love is a bit of a game–a game that is perpetual, as Venus in Leo is forever stuck in the romance stage of a relationship. We feed on attention, acknowledgment, validation, and adoration. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
Mars is in Leo from July 1-August 18. In Leo, Mars is proud, self-confident, and grand. We are spirited and have grand goals. We go after what we want in a direct, self-assured manner, desiring dramatic results. We prefer not to worry about details, and take the least complicated route to our goals. The sex drive is strong, and passion for life is high.
Jupiter entered Sagittarius on November 8th, 2018, and transits the sign until December 2nd, 2019. Read more about the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus first transited Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and is now consistently in the sign (since March 6th, 2019) until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Leo from July 28 to August 21, 2019.
Venus in Leo loves to be adored, pampered, and admired. Pride and passion are hallmarks of this cycle. We have a strong ego investment in our love lives during this period. The negative expression of this placement is overstating our feelings simply for the effect, as well as extravagance.
This week: On Sunday and Monday, we’re analyzing our feelings or talking about our relationships. It’s a good time for some clarity, although we may also be intellectualizing our affections more than feeling them! On Wednesday and Thursday, the two Benefics, Venus and Jupiter, form a trine, and this is a wonderful influence for opening up our hearts, giving one another the benefit of the doubt, and optimism. In Fire signs this year, it’s a generous, warm, and wholehearted transit. On Thursday and Friday, however, a Venus-Saturn quincunx points to some reticence or off timing. Fear of rejection may lead to clamming up.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Leo July 27-August 21. Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Venus trine Chiron July 31-August 1. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings.
Venus square Uranus August 1-2. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last–but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus parallel Mercury August 4-5. A congenial time when we appreciate diplomacy and socialize more readily.
Venus trine Jupiter August 7-8. Harmony and goodwill reign under this influence. Expansive feelings in love, and a feeling that anything is possible if we set our sights high enough, are experienced now. We are friendly, big-hearted, sociable, and optimistic. It is easy to make social contacts under this influence. Cheerfulness, trust, and confidence in love and social matters.
Venus quincunx Saturn August 8-9. A feeling that we may not be able to express our affections, or that our affections will not be received well, can undermine us in our relationships. Fear of rejection, emotional distancing, and over-sensitivity.
Venus quincunx Neptune August 10-11. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming blinded by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron August 12-13. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus quincunx Pluto August 13-14. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, August 4th, from 12:27 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Libra at 9:30 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, August 6th, from 3:36 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 11:31 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, August 8th, from 10:58 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 4:35 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, August 10th, from 3:51 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, August 11th, at 12:51 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars quincunx Pluto. A strong desire to prove ourselves may be at the root of confrontations and bull-headedness at this time. Avoid forcing issues.
Sun trine Jupiter. This influence is about growth and expansiveness. We are more aware of moral issues, and have a desire to improve and learn. Optimism and confidence are basic elements in the energy of this transit. We are more willing to take a risk or two, and we are motivated by a desire to impress others. Enthusiasm runs high, and cooperation comes easy. This is generally a good time to schedule new beginnings in business, education, personal relationships, marriage, creative projects, and so forth, all things equal.
Sun quincunx Saturn. Doubts, the feeling of not being good enough, and lack of self-confidence might plague us under this influence. Lack of faith in ourselves and in life hinders our movements and initiatives.
Venus trine Jupiter. Friendliness and optimism characterize this transit. We are big-hearted and our feelings are expansive. The outlook is cheerful and hopeful and the atmosphere is cooperative. This is a sociable, perhaps lazy and self-indulgent, time. We easily find meaning in our social connections. We are more open and trusting of friends and lovers. Integrity and loyalty are favored. A favorable influence for winning people’s trust. Speculation, advertising, publishing, and travel are favored.
Venus quincunx Saturn. We are extra sensitive, but it can be difficult to know why. Anxiety may overcome us when we wish to express our affections or social urges, and this hesitation can express itself through inhibitions and emotional distancing.
Sun quincunx Neptune. It can be difficult to concentrate and to formulate clear goals just now. Misconceptions abound. Fear of being ineffective can undermine our confidence when it comes to making clear or definite decisions, and for doing new things.

AUGUST 4
The Sun continues its transit of detail-oriented Virgo until 9:30 AM EDT, after which it transits Libra. With the Libra Moon, we’re looking for balance through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. The Mars-Pluto quincunx today can make it difficult to let go of problem areas, concerns, and frustrations, particularly if we’ve been holding onto anger. Resentment or competitive feelings can be operating just under the surface, and it can be challenging to know how to manage or express it adequately. A strong desire to prove ourselves may be at the root of confrontations and bull-headedness at this time. We might second-guess our first impulses. We should avoid the inclination to push our agendas or to go to great lengths to prove ourselves. Later today, a Sun-Neptune biquintile makes it easier to find inspiration.
The Moon is void from 12:27 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Libra at 9:30 AM EDT.
AUGUST 5
Emotions are somewhat complicated today, but we’re open to making improvements. The Moon in Libra is ready to compromise, negotiate, and consider the other side of a story. Its harmony with Venus, Jupiter, the Sun, and Mars motivates us to go after what we want, while its conflict with Saturn and Pluto suggest obstacles and worries are stumbling blocks. A Mercury-Venus parallel promotes cooperation, diplomacy, and congeniality. With this connection and the Libra Moon, we’re particularly inclined to analyze our feelings and relationships.
AUGUST 6
We’re seeking harmony and favoring compassion today. The Moon continues its transit of Libra for almost half the day–until 11:31 AM EDT–after which it moves through the sign of Scorpio. The Libra Moon seeks balance, while the Moon in Scorpio seeks to transform and grow. With the Moon in Libra, we’re especially aware of the value of our relationships and all that comes with maintaining them–compromising, negotiating, graciousness, and balancing. With the Scorpio Moon, we’re deliberate, strategic, perceptive, and emotional. We head towards a Sun-Jupiter trine, exact early tomorrow, which encourages a desire to grow, expand, improve, and impress. Whether it’s a business venture, friendship, attitude, self-improvement endeavor, or relationship, we want to bring it to the next level. Enthusiasm runs high, and cooperation comes easily. We might make grand gestures, show off a little, and rise above petty problems and differences.
The Moon is void from 3:36 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mercury), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 11:31 AM EDT.
AUGUST 7
While we’re generally feeling good with early day’s Sun-Jupiter trine, as the day advances, a Sun-Saturn quincunx comes into play. The desire to enjoy ourselves can clash with our material goals now. Doubts or lack of faith can slow us down and hinder our movements and initiatives. Even so, this can be a helpful process as we take a break from pushing ahead. We might now see the need to adjust our plans based on new responsibilities or a reality check. The Moon spends the day in Scorpio, and we’re inclined to scope out the hidden layers of any given situation.
AUGUST 8
Today’s Venus-Jupiter trine stimulates friendly energy and our desire for the ideal, and it can lift our spirits. This aspect helps to both soften and strengthen us. We are big-hearted, and our feelings are big, begging expression. Gestures tend to be thoughtful and verbal. We’re hopeful, cheerful, and cooperative. This is a friendly and possibly lazy or self-indulgent time. Our tolerance for rudeness or crassness decreases. We are quick to find meaning in our social connections. We are especially open and trusting of others, expecting the best, and both integrity and loyalty are favored. Even so, we’re heading toward a Venus-Saturn quincunx that is exact early tomorrow, bound to pull up realistic or material considerations. This influence can present a dilemma or difficulties feeling entirely at ease with others and making satisfying choices for entertainment or pleasure. It may leave us feeling torn between joy and responsibility, and perhaps not able to fully appreciate or deal with either. The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 4:35 PM EDT, after which it transits virtuous Sagittarius.
The Moon is void from 10:58 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 4:35 PM EDT.
AUGUST 9
The Venus-Saturn quincunx perfects this morning, and we can feel a bit awkward or anxious sharing our affections or following our social urges. There may be some hesitation, inhibitions, or social distancing now. While a balance is to be found between business and pleasure, it’s hard to know how to get there. The Moon spends the day in optimistic Sagittarius. It aligns with Jupiter, harmonizes with Venus, and approaches a trine to the Sun. These influences point to positive, to-the-point, but friendly interactions. There is a lively spirit now.
AUGUST 10
The Sun forms a quincunx to Neptune today, and Venus will do the same tomorrow. We might feel that others are draining our energy, especially if it’s unclear what they want from us. Or, situations are similarly confusing. We can be feeling slightly off or out of sorts, and there can be difficulties concentrating or figuring out our next step. These things are more likely if we’ve neglected our spiritual needs, and it makes sense to slow down and adjust. Incorporating and recognizing the need for more imagination in our lives seems necessary now. The Moon spends another day in the sign of Sagittarius, contributing to a searching, perhaps restless, theme.
The Moon is void from 3:51 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mars), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Sunday, August 11th, at 12:51 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Leo “This I do for me” is your motto at a time like this. This is your time to shine, like a swirl of starstuff that has finally reached critical mass and suddenly starts to give off more light than it receives. Issues of pride, mastery, and appreciation become more and more central to your lifestream as this cycle progresses, as does a very important lesson: it’s not what you do so much as how you do it, not who you are so much as how you make others feel about themselves. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it shouldn’t matter now.
Mercury in Cancer Gut-level is the way you think, speak, and perceive in the cycle you have just begun. You aren’t interested in the superficial; instead, you want to get right to the root of things. You don’t care about the universal, only about how things impact you and yours. Intellect and emotion mix to the point of inseparability.
Venus in Leo Romance becomes an end in itself as a new cycle begins for you. It marks a time when love, creativity, and self-expression satisfy a deep yearning to be appreciated and admired – needed, even. A flashy, flirty, stylish splash of color and warmth.
Mars in Leo The thrill of the chase, the smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd: that’s what gets your juices flowing now that you’ve entered a new cycle. To be appreciated, to be admired (adored, even) – that’s what you crave. It’s a time of creativity, drama, and passion; a time when grabbing the spotlight and stealing the scene gives you a thrill. Is winning everything? No – but it’s way ahead of whatever comes in second!
Jupiter in Sagittarius Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
