The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, at 2:50 PM EDT. 

On Tuesday, the Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Libra squares the Moon in Cancer.

The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.

This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might now consider our revelations and their meaning.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 2 degrees and 12 minutes of Cancer square the Sun at the same degree of Libra, affecting planets at approximately 0 to 4 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) the most.

This week: The Sun is in Virgo until the 22nd, when it enters Libra; Mercury is in Virgo until the 26th, when it enters Libra; Venus is in Libra to the 22nd, when it enters Scorpio; Mars is in Cancer.

The Sun is in Virgo from August 22-September 22. Our focus shifts to the puzzle pieces–the little details of our lives. It is now time to take care of practical concerns. Attending to the details of everyday life may not sound like loads of fun, but it can certainly free us from unnecessary stress that results from “collecting” odds and ends of unfinished business.

This is an ideal time to get organized, do detailed work, and improve communications on the job. We take more pride in our work, chores, and health efforts. We also want to be more organized and informed during the Sun-in-Virgo cycle.

We’re learning humility and the benefits of developing skills, some level of perfectionism, and the importance of attention to detail. It’s a time of down-to-earth practicality when we prefer to invest our time and energy in things with realistic potential. We’re not inclined to ambition or “going big.” Attracting prosperity involves honest, careful, and attentive work and dedication.

The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 22. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker.

However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless!

In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.

Mercury is in Virgo from September 9-26. When Mercury is in Virgo, precision in speech, thought, and process are more important to us. This is a time when we analyze and decide what is useful and what we deem to be impractical.

Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules (Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo). Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in details, however.

While Mercury is in Virgo, we should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in a too factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.

We gravitate to useful information, and we can enjoy helping others with our knowledge. It’s a time for analyzing and dissecting, but we need other influences to put the pieces together or to see the bigger picture as our confidence in so doing is not strong at this time. It’s a time of conservative thinking and a strong tendency to want facts and certainties.

Mercury is in Libra from September 26-October 13. When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.

Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.

Venus is in Libra from August 29-September 22. We favor charm over assertiveness to get what we want during this cycle. Usually quite willing to negotiate and compromise, we can be very obliging with others. We’re also very idealistic about love, and we seek intellectual peers. Although Venus in Libra is very relationship-focused, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We prefer things are done the “right” way, and aggressive or uncouth behavior turns us off.

The shadow expression of this position includes over-dependence and superficiality. To avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to partners while privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so.

While Venus is in Libra, we are more artistically inclined or seek balance in our personal environment. This cycle is excellent for promoting cooperation, harmony, mutually beneficial connections, and fairness. We are gentle but firm, and we’re skilled at mediation.

We’re more likely to prosper during this cycle in partnership, through one-to-one associations, such as counseling, or in fields related to harmony, relationships, beauty, design, and the law. We’re not fond of out-and-out competition or aggressive pursuit, preferring win-win situations, hands down. We attract things to us and appeal to others gently and kindly. Equality and politeness are important now, and we despise hurting others’ feelings.

Venus is in Scorpio from September 22-October 17. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. It’s a highly emotional position for Venus, and it’s passionate energy.

Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises to feel alive and vital.

Similarly, during this Venus-in-Scorpio cycle, we seek or gravitate to absorbing, deeply engaging, dramatic pleasures, activities, projects, and art. Things that are profound, disturbing, mysterious, or unusual can be more appealing now.

This can be a good time for finances, especially when working with others’ talents or resources, whether as an agent, supporter, or partner.

Mars is in Cancer from September 4-November 3, 2024, and then January 6-April 18, 2025. [Why so long and in two steps? Mars transits the full sign of Cancer from September 4th to November 3rd, when it moves on to Leo, but then turns retrograde in Leo on December 6th, 2024. While retrograde, Mars later returns to Cancer (on January 6th, 2025). Mars ends its retrograde on February 23rd, and later completes its transit of Cancer on April 18th, 2025.] We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want while Mars transits Cancer. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our current mood of the moment.

We’re also very intuitive and can be moved to take action to bring peace or comfort and safety to our lives during this period. We go to bat for our loved ones. In fact, we’re fiercely protective. It’s a powerful period for putting ego matters aside so that we can push our plans forward. Inner satisfaction and love are generally more important to us than outer achievements at this time. Personal and domestic goals are our priority during this phase.

Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.

There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.

Pluto transitions from Capricorn to Aquarius in 2023 and 2024. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Pluto retrograded back into Capricorn, and was in Capricorn until January 20th, 2024. Pluto was in Aquarius from January 20th to September 1st, when it retreated into Capricorn once again. Note: Pluto is slow-moving through the zodiac signs!

Note that Pluto is now in Capricorn for the final journey through the sign from September 1st to November 19th, 2024, from which time Pluto stays in Aquarius for many years to come.

This week: On Sunday, astrological influences trigger our insecurities or fears of loss of people, relationships, or control. They can bring suspicions and jealousies to the surface. Jealous and possessive feelings are directly proportional to fear of losing something or someone. We can be worried about betrayal or being in the dark about a matter. Social interactions may be intense or could provoke intense feelings.

It might be difficult to get close to one another under these conditions, but with self-honesty, it can be a good time to get in touch with our vulnerability.

On Friday, the 27th, we are seeking a little more meaning or excitement from our relationships, pastimes, and pleasures. Our humor is strong, we may be inspired by our interactions, and we’re open to change. However, we may be restless or not appreciative of what we have, feeling that the grass may be greener elsewhere.

Venus in Libra As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty – these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.

Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.

Venus inconjunct (quincunx) Uranus September 20. Impulsive spending, peculiar attractions, fear of commitment, freedom vs. intimacy issues. We might question whether we need more excitement in our relationships, or whether we need freedom from them; yet we don’t feel confident enough to rock the boat.

Venus quincunx Neptune September 21. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming overcome by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.

Venus square Pluto September 22. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.

Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn September 22. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.

Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter September 27. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.

Venus semi-sextile Mercury October 2-3. It’s difficult to get our minds and hearts on the same page. As such, it may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.

Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune October 2-3. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.

Venus trine Saturn October 3-4. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism and maturity in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor, and have much potential to last.

Venus trine Mars October 7-8. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.

Sun trine Pluto. We are able to get to the bottom of things now. We are more decisive than usual, and our abilities to concentrate and focus help us achieve what we set out to do. Endurance, the power to achieve, an opportunity to draw upon our past and to capitalize on resources, and strategy are all themes of this influence. This is a very positive aspect for starting a money-making endeavor (all things equal) or a new project. Leadership skills are in focus and strong. We are more able to connect with others in terms of shared goals and interests. The focus now is on eliminating negative or superficial elements in our lives.

Venus square Pluto. Intense passions are stirring, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness run high, in direct proportion to fear of losing someone or something. It’s not an ideal time to begin a new relationship, because it can be characterized by these energies. Social interactions may be intense or could provoke intense feelings. Changes in financial or relationship status could occur now. Resentments and issues that have been brewing in a close relationship come to the surface, disrupting the peace. All of our relationships intensify, and people can be more compulsive and demanding. This is an “all or nothing” energy. Manipulative behavior, fear of betrayal, and power struggles are possible.

Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be “money pits” as time passes. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.

Mercury trine Uranus. This is an opportune time to attend meetings and other organized group activities, to communicate online, and to take part in activities involving computers, scientific projects, and metaphysics. Unexpected gains may be realized through such mediums. The intuition is strong, and insights seem to come from “out of the blue”. Original, creative ideas are easy to come by.

Mercury opposition Neptune. We are mentally lazy, finding that our minds wander when presented with technical facts. It’s hard to get solid answers from others, and we can too easily misrepresent ourselves. Avoid signing contracts or formalizing agreements. There can be misunderstandings, misinformation, wishful thinking, confusion, some depression, carelessness, and deception. Our thinking may be self-defeating.

Mars semi-square Uranus. A tendency to take risks, to feel restless, to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to change our goals or actions.

Saturn semi-square Pluto. Power struggles, frustration, and manipulation are themes of this long-term transit. Confrontations lead us nowhere. We may desire change, but feel blocked by others or by circumstances. Persistence will pay off in the end, and the need to adjust our expectations becomes obvious.

Mercury trine Pluto. Our mental faculties are attuned to otherworldly impressions, offering us increased insight, psychological understanding and awareness, and focused attention.

Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. Problems in our personal life likely won’t get resolved under this influence. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong.

The Gemini Moon all day is lively and curious. We prefer to keep our options open, and we’re especially communicative and connected. While it’s a lighthearted transit, the Moon’s square to Saturn this morning can feel restrictive. We might worry that we’re divulging too much. Otherwise, this Moon transit is a stimulating one, encouraging our reasonable and logical side. We seek contacts and activities that engage us and satisfy our need for diversity, variety, and knowledge. This evening, the Moon aligns with Jupiter, magnifying our desire to learn, share, and connect. We’re more gracious with others and generous with our information and time.

SEPTEMBER 24

Mercury opposes Neptune this morning but heads toward a trine to Pluto later today. Mercury’s opposition to Neptune can obscure our viewpoint. We may vacillate between two very different visions of a matter when the truth is likely somewhere in between. Discrepancies that challenge our thinking can emerge, and concentrating on technical facts can be difficult. We could find ourselves on a mental teeter-totter, see-sawing between fact and fiction! If our minds wander now, it may be that we’ve recently neglected to feed our imaginations. With this transit, we should watch for misrepresenting ourselves, overlooking critical practical details, and self-defeating thoughts. However, this can be a good time to stretch our thinking and dream up possibilities we might miss on a regular day.

As the day advances, however, our resolve and concentration strengthen. There can be an opportunity to gain a mental advantage. We gravitate to looking for truths and unexplored topics and ideas. Mercury heads into the sign of Libra today. With Mercury visiting Libra until October 13th, we are diplomatic and friendly, bringing a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about improving our negotiation skills. Mercury in Libra can be a vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any situation. While we can undoubtedly be indecisive, this is a fine period for considering others’ points of view. We benefit and prosper through communicating more effectively and diplomatically, mediating, and negotiating or compromising. The Moon spends the day in fiery Leo, and we are engaged, creative, and ready for action. In fact, we could feel vaguely discontent until we recognize the need to latch onto something that inspires us. A Venus-Jupiter minor square adds a layer of restlessness to the later day’s astrology. With this transit, we seek more from our pleasures, money, or relationships. Channeled well, this influence can encourage us to improve our situation but otherwise might lead to over-indulgence, immoderation, or exaggeration. High expectations can leave us vulnerable to ups and downs.

SEPTEMBER 28

The Moon continues its transit of Leo all day. It’s a celebratory, confident, and warm position of the Moon. The Moon’s sextile to Jupiter and trine to Chiron previews the upcoming Jupiter-Chiron sextile as we open up to learning, different perspectives, and others’ viewpoints. Our attempts to broaden our horizons through education and expanded activities contribute much to our personal growth. We approach a Sun-Pallas sextile today, improving our social relations, negotiations, and ability to compromise. We’re motivated to understand each other and our situations more clearly. However, we’re also heading toward an alignment of the Sun with the Moon’s South Node, and we should watch for holding onto something that no longer supports our growth only because it’s comfortable or familiar. There is a tendency to cling to old or comfortable ways of doing things. If we’re looking for clarity, this transit offers a window into areas of our lives to which we cling too tightly. This may relate to fears of standing alone or disappointing people if we go our own way.
