The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Sunday, May 8, 2022, at 8:21 PM EDT.
On Sunday evening, the First Quarter Moon occurs with the Taurus Sun’s square to the Moon in Leo. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Any project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 18 degrees and 23 minutes of Leo, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 16 to 20 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Taurus; Mercury is in Gemini; Venus is in Aries; Mars is in Pisces.
The Sun is in Taurus from April 19-May 20. In Taurus, the Sun is methodical, sensual, and receptive. The Sun in Taurus is most active when it is defending or resisting! As the Sun moves through Taurus when plants take root, our determination and security needs are strong. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar and values longevity. The shadow side of Taurus is possessiveness and bullheadedness.
The Sun in Taurus is the connoisseur and sensualist. It’s patient, stubborn, earthy, stable, and rooted. The Sun-in-Taurus cycle is a good one for maintaining or building, as well as enjoying and appreciating what’s already in place. While the Taurus Sun is slow to warm up, it’s stable and persevering once it does. We value what’s long-term, strong, and lasting during this phase.
Mercury is in Gemini from April 29-May 22, and later, June 13-July 5. When Mercury is in Gemini, we are especially communicative, curious, and sociable. Mercury rules Gemini and feels right at home in the sign. We tend to take more pleasure in gaining a superficial knowledge of many subjects rather than dig deep into any one topic.
When it comes to making a point or debating, we are especially astute while Mercury is in Gemini. We are attracted to wordplays, puns, and negotiations, and we’re easily distracted. It’s a time when we’re more interested in trivia, information tidbits, and detached observations. There can be frequent changes of mind and subject. We’re flexible and quick to grasp topics.
Venus is in Aries from May 2-28. With Venus in Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past–it’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now.
Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to the sign. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
While Venus is in Aries, we gravitate to Aries-like activities, pleasures, pastimes, and objects of interest. Our tastes can veer toward action, new enterprise, conquests, courageous or daring acts, and so forth. We can be somewhat impulsive with our money or entertainment choices.
Our interests can be insistent and strong, but possibly short-lived. It’s not the best time for holding onto money. We might pour our resources too quickly into new ventures or projects but tire of these things just as rapidly.
Mars is in Pisces from April 14-May 24. We tend to feel less motivated to go after traditional goals, and more motivated to pursue spiritual or emotional drives during this cycle. We dislike confrontation during this trend. Our output is variable rather than straightforward, and our energy is similarly up and down.
We may put others’ needs ahead of our own, and our more idealistic side comes to the fore. During this cycle, going after what we want becomes less straightforward and more complicated!
Jupiter moves into Aries this week.
Jupiter is in Pisces from December 28th, 2021, to May 10, 2022. Jupiter returned to Pisces on December 28th, 2021. This is part two–there will be another part to this 3-part act later in the year! (From October 28 to December 20, 2022 is the final part of this Jupiter-in-Pisces transit.) Read more about the Jupiter in Pisces transit.
Jupiter is in Aries from May 10 to October 28, 2022. This is part one of two, with the second and final part occurring from December 20, 2022, to May 16, 2023. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Aries.
Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aries from May 2 to 28. In Aries, love is spontaneous and direct. The chase is very exciting to us under this fiery influence. We are bold, fresh, and a little impatient when it comes to matters of the heart. We don’t look back with Aries energy. We are not interested in saying sorry or dwelling on the past. It’s a brand new day! It’s time to make things work right now.
Aries is known for a love of the chase and the conquest, but Aries love can be longstanding as long as it remains relatively fresh. Aries is blunt–there’s no sugar-coating with Aries. This can sting, but rarely is Aries energy mean or petty. Saying it like it is is important to Aries. Desires are strong and expressed spontaneously, enthusiastically, and directly. Aries prefers to seduce rather than be seduced, to chase rather than be chased.
This week: On Sunday, the 8th, we’re optimistic and ready to take a chance or give someone or something the benefit of the doubt. However, we should watch for overextension. It’s best not to overstate or make big promises based only on the good mood of the moment.
On Tuesday and Wednesday (the 10-11), there can be some tension if we feel obligated or if someone seems to be holding us back. On the other hand, on Saturday and Sunday (the 14-15), we’re open to love, romance, and connection. Powerful energy is with us for breaking through a problem area in relationships with the goal of repairing and healing. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing than usual to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aries Romance at the drop of a hat is part and parcel of the cycle you have just begun. Winning the hearts of others can be a challenge you’re eager to accept – and the thrill of the chase might be most of the fun. Is it the pursuit of happiness – or the happiness of pursuit?
Venus sextile Mercury May 5-6. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners. Romantic overtures, expressions of love and affection, making new social contacts. This is a time when promises, pledges, and clarifications (usually very positive!) are made in love relationships.
Venus contra-parallel Jupiter May 7-8. We’re optimistic and ready to take a chance or give someone or something the benefit of the doubt. We are able to make the best of a situation now. Watch for overextension. It’s best not to overstate or make big promises based only on the good mood of the moment.
Venus semi-square Saturn May 10-11. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus conjunct Chiron May 14-15. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus contra-parallel Mars May 14-15. Passions are stimulated and intense. Fine line between love and hate. Competitiveness.
Venus semi-square Mercury May 17. Communications between lovers are superficial and unsatisfying, and perhaps awkward. Superficiality in romantic expression may exist now.
Venus parallel Chiron May 23. We readily connect our loving feelings to our need for healing and repairing.
Venus sextile Saturn May 23-24. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus square Pluto May 26-27. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Monday, May 9th, from 8:39 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Virgo at 6:54 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, May 11th, from 11:59 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Thursday, May 12th, at 2:35 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, May 14th, from 4:08 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 6:35 AM EDT.
May 2022:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week on Wednesday, May 11th, from approximately 6:30 PM to 11:55 PM, while the Moon is in Virgo. Note that Mercury is retrograde and we’re between eclipses during this window.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus semi-square Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. It’s not an ideal time for financial undertakings. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.
Jupiter semi-square Uranus. This influence is a restless one. We could find it difficult to agree with others, or to find common ground. We need to be willing to make changes in our lives now, or change will be forced upon us. This is a rebellious, restless influence–one in which we should avoid making changes just for the sake of making changes. We might take risks (perhaps foolish ones) for the sake of freedom. This is not a good time for financial speculation or travel. This is a time during which we can open ourselves up to new ways of thinking. However, we could also too easily avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter.

MAY 8
Today’s Leo Moon wants us to move out of our comfort zones to share ourselves and our creations with others. This transit is outgoing, competitive, and loving. This evening, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Moon in Leo. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.
MAY 9
The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 6:54 PM EDT, and with its opposition to Saturn today, differences in style or opinion can elevate our frustrations and may feel more problematic than usual, blocking progress or leading to delays. The Virgo Moon from 6:54 PM forward is practical and intelligent. We seek to tie up loose ends and deal with routine matters. This Moon transit draws out our desire to heal, help, and fix. Mercury is heading toward a retrograde station, suggesting some possible misunderstandings or information limbo.
The void Moon occurs from 8:39 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Saturn), until the Moon enters Virgo at 6:54 PM EDT.
MAY 10
The Moon spends the day in intelligent, particular Virgo, and we want to fix problems and manage details. Mercury stations as it turns retrograde today, however, and this shift can confuse matters temporarily. Mercury’s retrograde lasts until June 3rd, beginning in the sign of Gemini and ending in Taurus. During this cycle, our thinking turns inward as we review and reassess matters. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness–when meditation, journaling, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored more than usual. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication and transportation can reconnect us to other, possibly more meaningful, means of connecting. The more difficult times are the periods of the shifts themselves (the days surrounding the stations — today and June 3rd), after which we grow more and more accustomed to the motion. With Mercury retrograde in Gemini until the 22nd, we might look at past decisions and ideas from a new, possibly enlightened perspective. From May 22nd-June 3rd, Mercury is retrograde in Taurus, and we’re getting in touch with our security and comfort needs or reviewing business and financial matters. We look at projects and items in new ways–in terms of value and worth–and may revive a past project. While the shift of direction occurs today, it can be challenging to see matters clearly.
Also today, Jupiter heads into the sign of Aries and will transit the sign in two parts: from May 10th to October 28th, 2022, and then from December 20th, 2022, to May 16th, 2023. This transit encourages us to embrace our enterprising spirit and independence. With Jupiter in Aries, we make our own opportunities, and we thrive when we take the lead, initiate, inspire others, and demonstrate enthusiasm and courage. Prosperous areas are ones that allow us to head, lead, and innovate. Confidence in ourselves can bring about favorable circumstances or good luck. Faith is strong in our ability to reinvent our lives and confidently move forward. We believe that “life is what you make it,” and we enjoy competition as it pushes us to do better. Our belief in ourselves brings a spirit of the pioneer. We live in the “now” and quickly seize opportunities. However, we should watch for taking any of these things too far, a me-first attitude that can be insensitive, failing to consider others’ viewpoints and leaving opportunities behind as a result, over-confidence, not learning from past mistakes, and a lack of objectivity.
MAY 11
With Jupiter forming a semi-square to Uranus today, we can feel a little restless, wanting to grow, improve, and innovate, but we’re not necessarily focused. We could find it difficult to agree with others, or it’s hard to find common ground. We need to be willing to make changes in our lives now, or change will come in perhaps unwanted forms. This is a rebellious, restless influence, and we should avoid random moves. It’s best to tap into areas that may need some attention and improvement. We might open ourselves up to new ways of thinking, but we could also too easily avoid taking responsibility for things that truly matter. While watching for impractical ventures and unusual tangents with weak staying power, we should connect with our desire to innovate. This transit is a minor but longer-term aspect, and it’s the first of three. Jupiter and Uranus will form a semi-square again on September 28th and December 23rd. As such, we can consider it to be in influence for most of the remainder of the year. The Moon spends the day in Virgo, and the need to get organized can come on strongly. This energy can feel at odds with Mars and Neptune in dreamy Pisces, and we might struggle with it. The Moon in Virgo is adaptable, helpful, and intelligent.
The void Moon occurs from 11:59 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra the next day, Thursday, May 12th, at 2:35 AM EDT.
MAY 12
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo only until 2:35 AM EDT when it enters Libra. With the Moon in Libra, we do what we can to harmonize, although we’re more sensitive to imbalances. We’re more likely to seek feedback or someone with whom to share ideas and feelings. We’re idealistic and considerate. It’s a time of the lunar month when we more readily see different sides to a story, which can lead to more indecision than usual. The Sun is heading into alignment with the True North Node of the Moon, exact early tomorrow, encouraging and perhaps challenging us to grow, improve, and aspire to our goals. The desire for more security and stability can be a strong motivator now.
The Moon is void today until it enters Libra at 2:35 AM EDT.
MAY 13
The Moon spends the day in Libra, and we’re more concerned than usual with being fair, balanced, and polite. Our relationships can be in high focus. We weigh all perspectives and consider many different possibilities while the Moon is in Libra. For the most part, we’re cooperative and gracious today. Harmonizing is important to us. We aim to be reasonable and rational, and we have more self-control. Counseling and advising can figure strongly. With the Moon’s trine to Saturn tonight, we appreciate people we know and can count on, and we’re far more patient with others than usual. Family or home improvements might also figure strongly. It’s a supportive, steadying, and clear-headed influence. We can visualize what we want to do, and our sense of form and design is strong.
MAY 14
This morning’s Mercury-Mars quintile is especially clever energy for figuring things out and solving problems. Today’s Mars-North Node sextile supports moving forward or taking on a challenge. We can enjoy making connections, or we seek satisfying activities in which to participate. There is a sense that we’re heading in the right direction or that we want to take steps to grow and improve. New opportunities are there if we look for them to help us achieve our desires. The Moon continues its transit of Libra until 6:35 AM EDT, when it enters Scorpio. We can be particularly concerned with finding a balance or reaching a compromise while the Moon is in Libra, while the Scorpio Moon is wise, observant, and passionate.
The void Moon occurs from 4:08 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 6:35 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Taurus The cycle now dawning in your life emphasizes stability, substance, practicality, and the concept of value – value in the material as well as psycho-spiritual sense. This marks a time of building to last, of appreciating the substantial rather than ephemeral. Consolidating past gains rather than focusing on radical new departures is likely to be a major theme for you during this cycle. Appreciating the finer things of life is another hallmark of this phase, which marks a time when you should be concentrating on “smelling the roses” rather than passing them by in such a hurry.
Mercury in Gemini A walking encyclopedia, a yen to know a little bit about everything (and everyone): these are the icons of the cycle you have just begun. Talking, writing, keeping a finger on the pulse of all that’s happening … this is a time of study and learning, a cycle of mental challenge, curiosity, and social/intellectual growth. Such things are an end in themselves rather than a means to any other end.
Mars in Pisces There’s a martyr complex in the air, now that this new phase has begun in your life. How can you (or anyone) save the world? It’s a question you’ll probably ask yourself as this cycle continues. Defending the weak, undoing injustice, and tilting at windmills can be a big temptation. You might even win a few hands – but you’ll blister a couple if you’re not careful.
Jupiter in Pisces Mysticism, sensitivity to the needs of others, and an awareness of karma (the link between the present and the past): these are your paths to spiritual growth now. Addressing these issues brings you gain and satisfaction at many levels. A tolerance for differences, an understanding of human frailties and shortcomings.
Jupiter in Aries Faith in yourself and your future is emphasized as you begin this new cycle. A feeling that anything is possible leads to new ventures, a clean break from the past. At its best, this is a very positive and optimistic new cycle in your life, but at times, overconfidence can border on foolhardy bravery. Don’t burn your bridges behind you!
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
