January 19th to 25th, 2025

The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of the recent Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.

This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. We might consider what our recent revelations mean to us, and what we might do as a result.

It’s better to review and sort than to push something new. Until the New Moon, we might take inventory, tie up loose ends, and let go if necessary.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 2 degrees and 3 minutes of Scorpio, square the Sun at the same degree of Aquarius, and affecting planets at approximately 0 to 4 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) the most.

The FULL MOON occurs on Monday, January 13th 2025, at 5:27 PM EST.

On Monday, the Full Moon occurs when the Sun in Capricorn forms an opposition to the Moon in Cancer. The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time – a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships.

The Cancer-Capricorn polarity deals with the balance between the private life, domesticity, the need for a home base, and nurturance (represented by Cancer) versus the public life, career, reputation, and accountability (represented by Capricorn).

Attachments and love are ruled by Cancer, while achievements and rewards/punishments are ruled by Capricorn. In some ways, this polarity deals with the balance between unconditional love and conditional love. The Cancer Moon encourages us to value our home base and our roots, while Capricorn persuades us to consider our sense of duty and responsibility along public lines.

While Cancer may most enjoy attaching to the home and family, Capricorn urges us to attend to the responsibilities to the outside world. Neglecting either end of the axis will surely backfire on us. Ideally, a balance should be found between the two energies, and this is what the Full Moon invites us to do.

This Full Moon is about balancing our commitment to our career and families. Something has been building inside of us, and now is the time when the energy of the cosmos fairly demands that we let it out. Over the next two weeks, we will discover what this means for us. For now, we can’t sit on our feelings. We need to express them.

Something is exposed or illuminated, prompting us to get in touch with those things in our personal lives that we may have been neglecting or putting off. With so much attention to our relationships, careers, and personal plans these days, a push for considering our emotional needs occurs now.

This is a time to clear up past patterns that have been holding us back from personal fulfillment, particularly those that are home or family-centered or that revolve around our work-home balance and attitudes toward comfort and responsibility.

This Wolf Moon harmonizes with Uranus, Neptune, and the Moon’s nodes, and we can feel a wonderful sense of mission and progress now. Our revelations are pivotal and growth-oriented.

At the same time, the Moon aligns with retrograde Mars, and it can be an incredibly revealing time as this lunation will likely pull up unrest, resentment, and buried frustrations. There can be a real desire to master a situation, but some lack of motivation or direction for now. It’s a good idea to be open to possibilities while attempting to put aside those things that won’t serve us well if magnified.

Finalizing plans should be saved for a later date, and we should watch for too-quick decisions and actions, but paying close attention to what’s illuminated now makes sense. Through the events or the tensions of this time, we can ultimately get to a better understanding of ourselves, and particularly of our desires.

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn until the 19th, when it enters Aquarius; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Pisces; Mars is in Cancer.

The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 19. While the Sun is in Capricorn, we are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes.

Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.

We take a conservative approach to most matters during this month-long transit. Taking risks or making impulsive moves doesn’t suit us. We move ahead gradually but steadily and prosper by playing the long game–patiently working toward our objectives and taking care of our future. It’s a time when we expect eventual success by embracing step-by-step methods.

The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19-February 18. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.

We recognize those things that are obsolete or outdated, and we’re ready to change the world with new ideas and methods. We might often let our heads rule over our hearts during this cycle, preferring an objective, impersonal, and rational approach to life.

Mercury is in Capricorn from January 8-27. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized.

We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. Our survival instincts are strong–we’re interested in what will benefit us in the long term.

We’re not interested in the fluff, preferring to get right to a point or the bottom line. Communication can be somewhat guarded or cautious, and similarly not very floral or expressive. We gravitate to concrete subjects and information that’s logical, useful, and well-organized. We may prefer a methodical approach to studying. Our fantasies may be well-considered and possible, with realistic overtones.

We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism. At times, we might lack humor, or we’re inclined toward sarcasm when joking. We can be quite stubborn with our ideas and methods.

We can use this period to make solid, realistic plans and get organized. It’s a favorable time to advise, teach, or guide. Generally, we’re more concerned than usual with our reputation or responsibilities. Our dependability can reap rewards. We love to plan ahead and map out our next steps. Changes of schedule can be most disconcerting during this cycle.

Our reactions are sensible, cool, and level-headed while Mercury is in Capricorn.

Venus is in Pisces from January 2-February 4 [and later, March 27-April 30]. Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach, as there is a longing for something that is difficult to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is allowing ourselves to be deceived because we want to believe, as well as evasiveness. We should watch for falling in love with an idealized image of something or someone. It’s also important to watch for avoidant or indirect behavior.

Venus is exalted in Pisces and does well in the sign. It’s devoted, compassionate, exceptionally giving, and capable of sacrifice. We might refer heavily on our intuition with our finances and love life during this cycle. We gravitate to–and appreciate–unusual, tossed aside, poetic, artistic objects, situations, and people. We seek activities that move, inspire, or touch us.

Money may slip through our fingers, or we could ignore or overlook some of the practical elements of our lives now. However, finances improve if we connect with our otherworldly talents, imagination, desire to heal and serve, or sense of mission.

This transit is not particularly strong for resolve or determination, but it’s good for adaptability and increased understanding or acceptance.

Mars is in Cancer from January 6-April 18. [While retrograde Mars returns to Cancer on January 6th,. Mars turns direct on February 23rd and continues its transit of Cancer until April 18th.] We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want while Mars transits Cancer. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our current mood of the moment.

We’re also very intuitive and can be moved to take action to bring peace or comfort and safety to our lives during this period. We go to bat for our loved ones. In fact, we’re fiercely protective. It’s a powerful period for putting ego matters aside so that we can push our plans forward. Inner satisfaction and love are generally more important to us than outer achievements at this time. Personal and domestic goals are our priority during this phase.

Jupiter is in Gemini.

Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces. Saturn will enter Aries on May 24th, 2025.

Uranus is in Taurus.

Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.

There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.

Pluto is in Aquarius. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Note that Pluto finally completed its journey through Capricorn on November 19th, 2024, from which time Pluto stays in Aquarius for many years to come.

Romance & Relationships

Venus is in Pisces from January 2 to February 4, 2025. Like Aquarius, Pisces love is universal. However, Pisces draws no bounds in love. With Venus in Pisces, we have compassion (and perhaps attraction) for those who are left out, overlooked, or victimized. We are self-sacrificing, and we have a hard time setting up borders. The walls go down, we have a hard time saying no (especially if our compassion is engaged), but we are also prone to avoiding all that makes us feel uncomfortable.

Wishful thinking is one expression of Venus in Pisces. We can too easily believe what we want to believe. People can be hard to pin down, and love is hard to define under this influence. Pisces never sees the world in black-and-white terms. Rather, Pisces sees all the colors of the rainbow. With the goddess of love in Pisces, our love is all-embracing, we are able to forgive and understand, we are seducible and seductive, and we show compassion to our partners.

Venus in Pisces is tender and affectionate, although hard to reach nevertheless, as there is a longing for something that is hard to define and hard to satisfy. Borders and boundaries blur under Venus in Pisces. The shadow side of this position is allowing ourselves to be deluded, as well as evasiveness.

This week: On Sunday, we’re communicative and inclined to analyze our feelings and relationships. However, there can be some suspicion or resentment involved.

On Saturday, the 25th, we’re seeking special meaning through our connections. While this can make us a little more vulnerable to influence, we’re opening our hearts and seeing beauty where we’ve never seen it before.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Pisces A martyr complex, a love for the underdog, a search for your soul mate: such are the experiences associated with the new cycle you’re now just beginning. A yen for soul-stirring romance, a weakness for the weak, and a tendency to idealize people and relationships … very aesthetic, very other-worldly.

Venus conjunct Saturn January 18. Affections stabilize and mature. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. An air of formality is brought to personal and social relationships. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships comes now. A sense of duty may lead us to sacrifice a personal pleasure for a cause or for a loved one; thus we may have to abstain from personal gratification for the time being. Problems in personal relationships that have been swept under the carpet may surface now, and we are ready to face them. Dissatisfaction with loved ones becomes more glaring. Renewed ties to old friends or lovers are possible, or a new sense of responsibility in existing relationships.

Venus semi-square Pluto January 19. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.

Venus conjunct Mercury January 19. Favors playfulness in love and enhanced communication between partners.

Venus parallel Neptune January 25. Heightened sensitivity to, and awareness of, beauty and spirituality. We are easily influenced, seducible and seductive, and given to strong powers of imagination. We are more attuned to the world of beauty and romance. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence as well. Psychic openness and compassion.

Venus trine Mars January 25. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.

Venus sextile Uranus January 25. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.

The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).

Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.

The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.

It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).

The Moon is waning this week, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, although with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).

This Week’s Aspects

Mercury sextile Saturn. A good time to get organized, to do detail work, and to prepare for the future. Decisions made now tend to be practical and well thought out. Work done now will have tangible results in the future.

Venus semi-square Pluto. This influence can point to some underlying tensions in social interactions (looking for an ulterior motive or an agenda, suspiciousness) and relationships (possible jealousies). Passions run high and hot, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness run so close to the surface that others can almost feel the heat, and they are in direct proportion to our fear of losing something or someone dear to us.

Mercury sextile Venus. It’s easy to make social connections under this influence. This transit favors diplomacy, charm, social graces, negotiations, presentation of ideas, romantic overtures, teaching, business deals, publishing, commerce, public relations, and joint ventures or partnerships. It is often a time when promises and clarifications are made in love relationships.

Sun semi-square Saturn. It’s hard to satisfy the ego today. We feel blocked by circumstances or others. It’s too easy to feel discouraged, but discouragement is a time waster. Gratitude isn’t forthcoming right now, so it’s best to wait it out rather than waste energy letting it get to you.

Mercury square Chiron. Communications may be strained, and possibly hurtful or perceived as such. Misunderstandings are more likely now. Decisions may also be hard to come by, as we tend to doubt ourselves or the effectiveness of our ability to solve problems. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now.

Sun conjunct Pluto. We are strong-willed and focused under this influence. The need to gain more control over our lives motivates us. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being.

Mars sextile Uranus. This is a period in which we are more willing than usual to take risks and to make necessary changes in our lives. We are naturally bold and assertive, willing to experiment, and conscious of a need to act independently. Our ideas may be ground-breaking, and at the very least progressive. A strong desire to make things happen is with us now.

Mercury opposition Mars. We may be quick on the trigger when it comes to verbal reactions to others, and we may seriously lack diplomacy at this time. People may do the opposite of what they are told or what they think is best! This is not the best time to take a trip. However, this transit stimulates the desire to work and to produce.

Mercury trine Uranus. This is an opportune time to attend meetings and other organized group activities, to communicate online, and to take part in activities involving computers, scientific projects, and metaphysics. Unexpected gains may be realized through such mediums. The intuition is strong, and insights seem to come from “out of the blue”. Original, creative ideas are easy to come by.

Mercury sesquiquadrate Jupiter. We experience information overload, and we neglect to consider details. People tend to exaggerate today.

Venus trine Mars. Romantic activity, sexual attraction, creative action and self-expression in business and the arts, active participation in social functions, and creative initiative are favored under this influence. It’s easy to act upon our social and romantic needs successfully.

JANUARY 19

Venus and Saturn aligned yesterday, and today, Mercury sextiles both bodies. We’re ordering our thoughts and expressing them in pleasant ways. It’s a good time to analyze, reason through, and make sense of our relationships, situations, and feelings. We are inclined to simplify by eliminating nonessentials and paring things down without compromising the message. We’re adept at reading our audience. Responsibility, maturity, quality, and simplicity are attractive to us now. While we can be cautious about expressing ourselves and our feelings, we’re paying more attention to being sincere, honest, and precise.

We are mentally prepared, desiring more order and organization in our lives. Decisions we make now are practical and well thought out. Reasoning things logically and step by step can be beneficial and even soothing. It can be a time of pleasant exchanges that are also useful or practical, and we more readily compromise, negotiate, and clarify things.

The Sun heads into the sign of Aquarius today for a stay until February 18th. During this cycle, we are motivated by our need for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. Our attention turns to what’s outdated in our lives, and we strive to find new perspectives and methods. The structure and order that Capricorn found appealing now seem too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe in the month ahead. However, we can be unreliable, unpredictable, or too rebellious for our own good when the Sun is under strain.

JANUARY 20

Today’s Sun-Saturn semi-square tunes us into our sense of duty and desire to protect, control, and build. We’re cautious and serious-minded, and we could face challenges to self-expression. Responsibilities can weigh on our minds. Gaining what we want is challenging under this influence, possibly due to negative expectations or a tendency to need more than what is currently possible. This minor challenging aspect can feel heavier because we’re heading toward a Sun-Pluto alignment. Further, Mercury approaches a square to Chiron, pointing to possibly strained, unnatural communications later today. We can be more sensitive to criticism than usual. We may doubt ourselves when solving problems or learning and expressing ourselves. Even so, a temporary dip might boost our motivation to improve.

JANUARY 21

With a Mercury-Chiron square early into the day, we’re especially sensitive to what we perceive as criticism. The Sun and Pluto align this morning, and we seek more intensity in our lives and relationships. We’re persistent, and the need to gain more control over our lives can feel pressing. We are strong-willed, resourceful, and focused, and we may benefit by keeping things to ourselves and not rushing forward prematurely. This influence brings the desire for self-mastery to our attention. A minor crisis might alert us to an area of life that requires work, improvement, and transformation.

We should guard against temperamental behavior and decision-making. Some paranoia or extremes of thinking could be behind this. The focus should be on recycling, updating, revising, and eliminating so that we can grow. Unusual, intense, or dramatic happenings are possible with friends and networks. We may be confronting issues of control and power related to individuality, equality, friendships, and group associations.

The Moon moves into Scorpio today at 11:21 AM EST, and the Last Quarter Moon occurs this afternoon at 3:31 PM, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Scorpio, pointing to a crisis of consciousness. It’s a time to consider what our recent revelations mean to us and what we might do as a result. This Quarter Moon signals the need to review and sort rather than push something new. Until the New Moon on the 29th, it’s a better time to tie up loose ends, take inventory, and let go if necessary.

JANUARY 22

The Moon spends the day in Scorpio, and we’re going deep, interested in discovering deeper truths and motives. This Moon draws us to transformative and emotionally engaging experiences.
