The New MOON occurs on Sunday, January 18th, 2026, at 2:52 PM EST.
The New Moon in Capricorn, occurring on Sunday, the 18th, in the afternoon, marks the beginning of a new cycle. The Sagittarius New Moon cycle ends and the Capricorn New Moon cycle begins.
The New Moon Chart:
The New Moon is exact on Sunday when the Sun and Moon align in the sign of Capricorn. This lunation symbolizes a new beginning in the cardinal earth sign of Capricorn. It’s a time to focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Goat–tenacious, resourceful, disciplined, wise, ambitious, prudent, constant–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives.
Now, we can focus on practical and attainable long-term goals, work on developing maturity and common sense, prepare for the future, make commitments and recognize responsibilities, and nurture our dreams in a realistic manner.
With this potent Capricorn energy, we have the chance to create some serious order in our lives. It’s time to make some solid plans and to set the stage for reaping the rewards from our new beginnings, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
One of Capricorn’s “lessons” is acceptance of the concept that reasonable boundaries and rules actually do offer us freedom–freedom from worry and chaos, for example. Setting goals for ourselves allows us to focus on what really matters.
This New Moon is aligned with Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Pluto. In other words, all of the inner planets are aligned, although Venus is the only inner planet not in Capricorn (Venus is in early Aquarius). This lunation is sextile Saturn and Neptune, trine Uranus, and it’s also opposite Jupiter.
We’re ready to make something special of our profession, reputation, long-term goals, and responsibilities. It’s a powerful time for practical solutions and innovation. Teaming up to achieve a work or material goal can be successful and attractive now. Meeting new people through these endeavors can also figure strongly. It’s as much of a practical time as it is a magical period. We’re both inspired and ready to put in the work to make things happen.
This New Moon chart has an interesting lineup and shape. Even looking at the aspect grid reveals the unusual number of inner planetary conjunctions and then sextiles and conjunctions further down the grid. It’s reminiscent of the August 30th, 2019 New Moon in Virgo, and it’s a powerfully creative influence.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 28 degrees and 44 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 25 to 30 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) and 0 to 3 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.
NEXT WEEK: The next Moon phase will occur on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at 11:47 PM EST, with the First Quarter Moon.

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Capricorn until the 20th, when it enters Aquarius; Venus is in Aquarius; Mars is in Capricorn until the 23rd, when it enters Aquarius.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21, 2025-January 19, 2026. While the Sun is in Capricorn, we are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes.
Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
We take a conservative approach to most matters during this month-long transit. Taking risks or making impulsive moves doesn’t suit us. We move ahead gradually but steadily and prosper by playing the long game–patiently working toward our objectives and taking care of our future. It’s a time when we expect eventual success by embracing step-by-step methods.
Mercury is in Capricorn from January 1-20. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized.
We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. Our survival instincts are strong–we’re interested in what will benefit us in the long term.
We’re not interested in the fluff, preferring to get right to a point or the bottom line. Communication can be somewhat guarded or cautious, and similarly not very floral or expressive. We gravitate to concrete subjects and information that’s logical, useful, and well-organized. We may prefer a methodical approach to studying. Our fantasies may be well-considered and possible, with realistic overtones.
We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism. At times, we might lack humor, or we’re inclined toward sarcasm when joking. We can be quite stubborn with our ideas and methods.
We can use this period to make solid, realistic plans and get organized. It’s a favorable time to advise, teach, or guide. Generally, we’re more concerned than usual with our reputation or responsibilities. Our dependability can reap rewards. We love to plan ahead and map out our next steps. Changes of schedule can be most disconcerting during this cycle.
Our reactions are sensible, cool, and level-headed while Mercury is in Capricorn.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 20-February 6. When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, reasonable, objective, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
We’re reasonable, finding it easier to separate intellect and emotion when assessing a situation. Although progressive-minded and receptive to new studies and information, we are not quick to sway from our ideas and beliefs.
During this cycle, we take more interest in thinking that’s daring or original. As we envision a better future, we can come up with truly interesting ideas and concepts.
Venus is in Aquarius from January 17-February 10. We move towards unconventionality, independence, and freedom as themes in our social relationships under this influence. Aquarius can be just as faithful as Capricorn, but it has to be on its own terms! Experimental relationships are more intriguing now.
Being friends as well as lovers is important to us during this cycle. Allowing one another freedom of expression, and treating others fairly, unselfishly, and impartially, are themes now.
We treat people as equals and take our friendships, causes, and interests seriously. We prize intellectual stimulation and companionship. Income boosts come through innovative ideas. We can remake traditions and approach things unconventionally. Being true to ourselves is of the utmost importance in our relationships. Venus-in-Aquarius is a friendly but aloof period.
Mars is in Capricorn from December 15, 2025-January 23, 2026. Mars in Capricorn is deliberate, persistent energy. We consider the future and the consequences before taking action during this cycle. Our energy is reliable, careful, reserved, and faithful. We are slow to anger but can be quite cold and irritable if frustrated.
Skepticism and realism are themes. We are thorough and precise. Orderliness, discipline, self-reliance, and planning well can be in focus. We dislike waste, sloppiness, and excess. Our ambitions are clear, and our actions are measured and careful. We need to feel that we’re in control and on top of things. The shadow side of Mars in Capricorn is rigidity, negativity, or dryness.
Mars is in Aquarius from January 23-March 2. Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit-or-miss tactics, and impersonal expressions of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. While we can be self-starters, we also believe in the team, cooperating, and reducing the emphasis on personal power.
During the Mars-in-Aquarius cycle, we are attracted to unconventional methods and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective. We need space to get in touch with our own intuition and don’t appreciate being forced or coerced into going a certain way. This transit can be rebellious and obstinate if it feels constrained or labeled.
This is a cycle for inventing, reforming, and revolutionizing. We’re freeing ourselves from outdated patterns or traditions.

Jupiter is in Cancer.
Jupiter began its transit of Cancer on June 9th, 2025, and will continue its visit to the sign until June 30th, 2026. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Cancer.

Saturn is in Pisces. Saturn was in Aries from May 24th, 2025 to September 1st, 2025, and will be in Aries again from February 13th, 2026, to April 12th, 2028. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aries. Saturn isn’t yet completely done with its transit of Pisces. Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and currently, from Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces.)

Uranus has returned to Taurus.
Uranus is in Gemini from July 7th to November 7th, 2025, from April 25, 2026, to August 3, 2032, and then from December 12, 2032, to May 22, 2033. Read about Uranus in Gemini in its calendar page.
Uranus has more work to do in the sign of Taurus from November 7th, 2025, to April 25th, 2026. Uranus began in Taurus in 2018/2019. During this cycle, we approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.

Pluto is in Aquarius. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Note that Pluto finally completed its journey through Capricorn on November 19th, 2024, from which time Pluto stays in Aquarius for many years to come.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Aquarius from January 17-February 10. While Venus was in Capricorn, we valued enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We took expressing our feelings seriously, and we also took our sweet time warming up to others! Generally, we kept our “cool” in relationships. With Venus now in Aquarius, we still keep our “cool” in relationships, but in a detached and impersonal sort of way. Unconventional set-ups become more appealing.
Bringing the spirit of friendship into romantic relationships is a positive use of Venus in Aquarius energy. Relationships that fairly scream “alternative” appeal to us now. It’s all about being open-minded and somewhat detached with Aquarius energy dominating the love arena. With Venus in Aquarius, it may be better to approach dating casually, with no expectations and no strings. Melodrama and emotionalism are not in favor. We may also find ourselves attracted to–or attracting–people who are not our usual “type.”
This week: On Monday, our desires are complex and deep. We demand more from our relationships and pleasures, perhaps wanting to take them to a new level. Feelings are intense, insistent, and motivating.
Friday holds some tension if we feel trapped or caged in by others or by our relationships. However, we have the chance to see where we may be stagnating.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Aquarius A love for the unusual, a distaste for stodgy old rules and conventions, a feeling that you’re above the petty bourgeois stuff and nonsense: that’s what a new cycle brings into your life now. (“I love humanity; it’s people I can’t stand!”) Unconventional romantic and social connections are likely at a time like this.
Venus sextile Neptune January 16-17. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus conjunct Pluto January 19. An extraordinarily passionate time for relationships. We are focused and confident. There is a tendency to want–and to demand–a lot from a partnership or friendship. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships begun under this influence are intense and passionate, deep and far from superficial, and can be quite possessive as well.
Venus contra-parallel Uranus January 23. Questions of freedom, change, specialness, and experimentation are raised in our relationships.
Venus parallel the Sun January 25. A strong desire for harmony and comfort fill us now. We may be moved to express our affections.
Venus semi-square Saturn January 27. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, January 18th, from 4:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Neptune), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 5:19 PM EST.
VOC on Tuesday, January 20th, from 9:17 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Wednesday, January 21st, at 1:51 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Friday, January 23rd, from 8:18 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Neptune), until the Moon enters Aries at 8:27 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Saturday, January 24th, from 4:37 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Sunday, January 25th, at 1:06 PM EST.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon on the 18th, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, but with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details). The Moon is waxing after the New Moon on the 18th, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, although with some exceptions.
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs at the Cazimi Moon, from approximately 2:35 PM to 3:20 PM EST on Sunday, January 18th, while the Moon is in Capricorn.

JANUARY 18
Very early today, Mercury aligns with Mars in the sign of Capricorn, exciting and overstimulating our nerves. We want to get to the point so that communications can be insensitive. Keeping busy and making headway satisfies us more than usual, and it’s best to channel excess mental energy constructively. Tensions are possible, particularly when we are over-excited about an idea or resist considering others’ input. We are more invested in our ideas and convictions than usual, and we’re more courageous in expressing them. It’s a time of quick thinking and decisiveness.
A New Moon occurs today in the sign of Capricorn, at 2:52 PM EST. With this potent new-beginning energy, it makes sense to focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Goat–-tenacious, resourceful, disciplined, wise, ambitious, prudent, constant–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. It’s time to focus on practical, attainable long-term goals, develop maturity and common sense, prepare for the future, make commitments and recognize responsibilities, and realistically nurture our dreams. We have the chance to create some serious order in our lives!
Making concrete plans can be satisfying in the week ahead. We might develop reasonable boundaries and rules that offer us freedom from some worry and chaos.
Tonight, Mercury forms a sextile with Saturn and heads toward a trine to Uranus, helping us reason things through. It’s a good time to put a new spin on our methods. We’re alert, pragmatic, and busy. Thoroughness brings rewards. It’s a time of being more mentally grounded, and reasoning things logically and step by step can be beneficial and even soothing. At the same time, we’re not afraid to tap into our inventiveness.
The Moon is void today from 4:58 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Neptune), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 5:19 PM EST.
JANUARY 19
Very early today, Mercury’s trine with Uranus is potentially enlightening. We can come up with innovative ideas to improve our daily lives. It’s a time of heightened perception and unusual but workable ideas.
The Sun forms a sextile with Neptune today, shortly before it leaves the sign of Capricorn and enters Aquarius. This Sun-Neptune transit encourages us to tune in to our imagination and intuition. It enhances instinctual judgment. We see things from a perspective that celebrates our differences. This influence sets an excellent mood for respecting our intuition. We take things as they come, finding meaning in our experiences more readily than usual. We’re tuned in, inspired, and charitable. What feels like serendipity now may be due to a good sense of timing and a sense of being in sync with the universe.
The Sun heads into the sign of Aquarius today for a visit until February 18th. During this cycle, we are motivated by our need for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. Our attention turns to what’s outdated in our lives, and we strive to find new perspectives and methods. The structure and order that Capricorn found appealing now seem too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe in the month ahead. However, we can be unreliable, unpredictable, or too rebellious for our own good when the Sun is under strain.
Venus aligns with Pluto tonight, and we’re more protective, intense, or private with our affections, tastes, money, and pleasures today. It’s a time of intense feelings and a stronger connection with our deeper wants. We’re looking to grow, change, or intensify our relationships, money, pleasures, or social lives–or grow ourselves through these things. However, we might try to sway, coerce, and manipulate others, or we may seek more from our relationships or pastimes. It’s a time when we can be incredibly focused and perhaps obsessed, especially when interacting. There is a tendency to want–and demand–more than usual from a partnership or friendship.
We also approach a Saturn-Uranus sextile and Mars in harmony with both planets, exact early tomorrow. It’s a fine time to fix problems and strike a nice balance between tradition and progress.
JANUARY 20
The Moon is void from 9:17 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Wednesday, January 21st, at 1:51 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Capricorn
![]()
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
![]()
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
![]()
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries

We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.

THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual – setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live – not just one person, but many – are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.
Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest – and a challenge – at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Capricorn With this new cycle taking hold in your life now, taking charge and being in control become more important issues for you. You want to get things organized, and you have the initiative to do it. This is a time of ambition and responsibility, a time to keep your cool and pace yourself. Working hard is smart, but working smart is better.
Mars in Aquarius The reformer, the inventor, the engineer, the revolutionary – these are important archetypes for you as a new cycle gets underway in your life. They are icons of the ambitions that stir you at a time like this. Independence, freedom from past patterns, and a daring readiness to innovate: such are the paths of achievement for you now.
Jupiter in Cancer Taking care of yourself and all that’s yours becomes a high priority in your life now. Security, setting down roots, establishing your ties with the past: these things are among the articles of faith that guide you. This is often a sign of growth in all things connected with family and property (such as real estate).
Saturn in Pisces Making peace with the past, coming to terms with karmic debts: these are some of the issues that confront you as a new phase begins in your life. Failure to face these things can cause setbacks and put obstacles in your path. Learn to look beyond the narrowly personal and selfish or you’ll get in over your head.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Aquarius Reform, revolution, a rejection of the past and a focus on the future: these are the signatures of the new phase now beginning in your life. Tradition becomes irrelevant, and the conventional wisdom is revealed as dogma or outright nonsense – and what’s the difference, really? Radical changes in all things social and intellectual.
