The NEW MOON occurs on Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, at 12:00 AM EST.
The New Moon occurs seconds into the day on Wednesday when the Sun and Moon align in the sign of Capricorn.
This lunation symbolizes a new beginning in the cardinal earth sign of Capricorn. It’s a time during which we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Goat–tenacious, resourceful, disciplined, wise, ambitious, prudent, constant–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives.
Now, we can focus on practical and attainable long-term goals, work on developing maturity and common sense, prepare for the future, make commitments and recognize responsibilities, and nurture our dreams in a realistic manner.
With this potent Capricorn energy, we have the chance to create some serious order in our lives. It’s time to make some solid plans and to set the stage for reaping the rewards from our new beginnings, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
One of Capricorn’s “lessons” is acceptance of the concept that reasonable boundaries and rules actually do offer us freedom–freedom from worry and chaos, for example. Setting goals for ourselves allows us to focus on what really matters.
This lunation aligns with Pluto, emphasizing an intense, focused, and ambitious period ahead of us.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 23 degrees and 13 minutes of Capricorn, affecting people with personal planets and points at approximately 19 to 27 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

This week: The Sun is in Capricorn; Mercury is in Aquarius; Venus is in Capricorn; Mars is in Taurus.
The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21, 2020-January 19, 2021. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction through completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.
Mercury is in Aquarius from January 8 to March 15. [This is an extended stay due to an upcoming retrograde cycle from January 30-February 20.] When Mercury is in Aquarius, we are hungry for knowledge and open to new and original ideas. We begin to think outside of the box, and our thinking becomes more progressive and objective. Our communication and thought patterns are spontaneous, somewhat fragmented, and liberal. This is a time when inventive thinking is at a peak.
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions is increased. We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships.
Mars is in Taurus from January 6 to March 3, 2021. We are determined, stubborn, and resolute during this cycle. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goal is longevity and long-term satisfaction.
Jupiter is in Aquarius from December 19th, 2020, to May 13, 2021, and then from July 28 to December 28, 2021. Read more about the Jupiter in Aquarius transit.
Saturn entered Aquarius on December 17th, 2020. Saturn transits Aquarius from March 21 to July 1, 2020, and from December 17th, 2020, until March 7, 2023. Read about Saturn’s transit of Aquarius.
Uranus is in Taurus. Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Capricorn from January 8 to February 1, 2021. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships are paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others’ expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence.
There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced at times. However, this cycle offers us an opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us feel more grounded and secure in the long run.
This week: On Tuesday, we may say the wrong things, and we’re particularly sensitive.
However, we’re also learning about our vulnerabilities, and by Wednesday, we’re open to new experiences and ways of relating. It’s more natural to accept differences and individuality. It’s a good time to make an effort to reach out, make changes, and embrace new ways to have fun and enjoy ourselves and our relationships. Friendship in love relationships becomes more important. We can be attracted to people who are especially unique, or what makes a person different or special is particularly noticeable and intriguing now. We’re loosening up. Unexpected opportunities for enjoyment or connections can emerge.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love ’em: that’s what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so – but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.
Venus trine Mars January 8-9. Attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.
Venus square Chiron January 12. Not a commitment-friendly transit. We are somewhat fearful of investing ourselves emotionally in a relationship.
Venus trine Uranus January 13. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus sextile Neptune January 22-23. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional “color” to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus parallel Pluto January 23. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, January 10th, from 1:29 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Capricorn the next day, Monday, January 11th, at 8:30 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Wednesday, January 13th, from 2:22 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 11:44 AM EST.
VOC Moon on Thursday, January 14th, from 4:28 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Friday, January 15th, at 5:18 PM EST.
January 2021:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon very early on the 13th, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. The Moon is waxing after the New Moon, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, again with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from approximately 12:30 AM to 4:25 AM on Tuesday, January 14th, while the Moon is in Aquarius. Caveat: this window is too close to the New Moon. Another window occurs from Friday, January 15th, at approximately 5:20 PM EST, until Sunday, January 17th, at approximately 10:40 PM EST, while the Moon is in Pisces.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury semi-square Neptune. We are not thinking clearly, preferring to daydream. Technical facts can be glossed over at this time. It’s not a good time to make a presentation, to ask for what you want, or to formalize agreements.
Mercury conjunct Jupiter. We can visualize in broader terms and see the “big picture” now. Travel is favored, all things equal. We are optimistic, which can help us attract positive circumstances. This is a good time to submit ideas, applications, and so forth, all things equal. This is a time of thinking on a grand scale and long-range planning. Details and mundane affairs do not interest us as much as the big picture does. We are prone to exaggerating the facts due to enthusiasm. Expressing ourselves verbally comes easily, and public relations and negotiations run especially smoothly. This is a time for making long-range plans, seeing the big picture, and thinking about what is really important to us in the long run.
Mercury sextile Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it’s not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.
Jupiter sextile Chiron. This subtly uplifting time brings us the opportunity to free ourselves of restrictive and negative attitudes that have been undermining our progress. We are especially open to learning from others, and better able to help others to understand our point of view. We might open our minds to different perspectives and philosophies.
Mercury square Uranus. Our senses are stimulated, and we could have sudden flashes of insight or fresh new ideas. However, our ideas are not always received well by others and we can be scatter-brained. It’s a challenge to deal with routine matters or monotonous tasks under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. This is not a good time to be understood, so we may want to hold off presenting our ideas for the time being. New information can surface now that upsets the status quo, but can also act to stimulate our minds into new ways of thinking.
Venus square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy, learning from one another, and commitment can be experienced now. Insecurities on a social level can be magnified.
Mars square Saturn. Frustrations, smoldering anger, and a feeling of being blocked when we are attempting to go after what we want characterize this transit. Our desire to take action and to constructively express our aggressive urges feels thwarted or blocked. It can feel like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks.
Venus trine Neptune. We are more attuned to the world of beauty, the arts, and the imagination. Compassion, harmony, kindness, and openness characterize this transit. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. This can be a “magical” time on a romantic and social level. The pleasures of life are experienced fully. We see the very best in people now, and this eases our interactions and takes the pressure off in personal relationships. Romance is highly favored.
Sun conjunct Pluto. We are strong-willed and focused under this influence. The need to gain more control over our lives motivates us. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being.
Mars semi-square Neptune. Disorganization, lack of drive, lack of forethought, impracticality, and carelessness. Energy and time are too easily wasted. Passive-aggressiveness. It’s hard to know what we want and where we’re headed under this influence.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

JANUARY 10
The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, sparking our desire to learn, explore, and discover. A change of scenery or break in the routine appeals now. We set our sights high. Optimism is one of the positive traits of this position; neglecting to see the essential details is a potential problem, especially with Mercury semi-square Neptune and the Moon square Neptune. We may not be seeing things clearly, and we can find it all too easy to gloss over technical facts. There can be cloudy thinking or a tendency to daydream. We may not express ourselves clearly, or others are not reading our messages well–usually, it’s a combination of the two! However, a Sun-Vesta trine helps ground us as the day advances. The need to dedicate ourselves to a project or cause is strong now.
The void Moon occurs from 1:29 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Neptune), until the Moon enters Capricorn tomorrow, Monday, January 11th, at 8:30 AM EST.
JANUARY 11
Mercury aligns with Jupiter in the sign of Aquarius today, and both bodies form a sextile to Chiron. We’re inclined to talk and think about our dreams, plans, friends, and connections now, opening up and enjoying the process. Verbal expression flows smoothly, and agreements or resolutions can figure strongly. We should watch for overstating and promising more than we can do, but it remains a good time to enjoy good humor and positive vibes. We have good intentions, and warm, healthy conversations are possible as a result. Stretching our thinking to include new possibilities is a useful exercise now. We might free ourselves from restrictive and negative attitudes that have been undermining our progress. We are incredibly open to learning from others and better able to help them understand our perspective. It’s a time of opening our minds to different views and philosophies. We are absorbing and possibly sharing what we’ve learned from past experiences and mistakes. The Moon continues its transit of Sagittarius until 8:30 AM EST when it enters Capricorn. The Moon aligns with Venus in Capricorn this afternoon, and we’re practically inclined, finding more pleasure in taking care of business.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Capricorn today at 8:30 AM EST.
JANUARY 12
Mercury forms a square to Uranus this morning, and we can be impatient and scattered. Disorganization or abruptness with our communications is likely. It’s not easy to put everything together, organize our thoughts, or deal with routine matters under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. We may be jumping ahead of ourselves in our communications. New information can surface that upsets the status quo, but it can also encourage new thinking and perspectives. This transit certainly stimulates our senses and can bring on sudden flashes of insight and fresh new ideas. This afternoon, Venus forms a square to Chiron, and we may withdraw or hold back, easily rebuffed or hurt. We can feel somewhat drained temporarily, although this does allow us to refuel with more authentic motivation. A good approach would be to recognize and explore our feelings of vulnerability. The Moon spends the day in responsible Capricorn, and it’s Balsamic all day–a New Moon occurs seconds after midnight tomorrow. While we can feel a little wired, it’s best to wind down.
JANUARY 13
The New Moon occurs seconds into the day in the sign of Capricorn, symbolizing a new beginning. It makes sense to focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Goat–tenacious, resourceful, disciplined, wise, ambitious, prudent, constant–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. It’s a time to focus on practical and attainable long-term goals, work on developing maturity and common sense, prepare for the future, make commitments and recognize responsibilities, and realistically nurture our dreams. With this potent Capricorn energy, we have the chance to create some serious order in our lives. It’s time to make concrete plans. We might develop reasonable boundaries and rules that offer us some freedom from worry and chaos. This lunation aligns with Pluto, emphasizing an intense, focused, and ambitious period ahead of us. A Mars-Saturn square occurs this morning, and with its proximity to the New Moon, it has more power. As determined as we may be, there are obstacles to surmount! We could feel blocked from asserting ourselves or pursuing our desires. It’s a time to slow down and make adjustments and edits, as we may encounter resistance if we push ahead. It can seem like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks. We might deal with disapproval or a dip in confidence, and we should draw on patience and aim to develop our endurance. It’s a better time for maintenance than it is for moving forward. We might recognize some of our limits and adjust our speed accordingly. This evening, Venus forms a trine to Uranus, however, and we’re lightening up considerably as the day advances. This transit brings us out of our shells, encouraging our bolder, more innovative natures, socially speaking. We are especially interested in all that is new, fresh, invigorating, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary regarding romantic involvements, entertainment or pleasures, and financial undertakings. We may be experimenting, improvising, and trying new ways of relating to others and expressing ourselves. We might discover alternative ways to make (or spend) money. Although a little detached, we’re freer with our feelings, and we find beauty in the unfamiliar or uncommon. The Moon leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius at 11:45 AM EST.
The void Moon occurs from 2:22 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Pluto), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 11:44 AM EST.
JANUARY 14
Uranus stations and turns direct today after five months of retrograde motion, and Uranus energy hangs heavy in the air this week, with related themes dominating. As the planet gains speed in the next few weeks, our urge to express our unique self, take some chances or risks, rebel, listen to our instincts, and stir up change are reawakened or externalized. The Sun forms its yearly alignment with Pluto today. It’s a time when we seek more intensity from our lives and relationships. We’re persistent and our ambitions intensify. The need to gain more control over our lives can feel pressing, and we should guard against temperamental behavior and decision-making. We are strong-willed, resourceful, and focused, and we may very well benefit by keeping things to ourselves and not rushing forward prematurely. This influence brings the desire for self-mastery to our attention. A small crisis might alert us to an area of life that requires work, improvement, and transformation. The need to gain more control over our lives motivates us, although some paranoia or extremes of thinking could be behind this. The focus should be on recycling, updating, revising, and eliminating so that we can grow. A Mars-Neptune semi-square this afternoon can serve to diffuse the intensity. In fact, we can feel a bit winded temporarily. Seeing holes or losing some confidence in our plans, desires, and pursuits can be more of a symptom of the need for a bit of inspiration or a well-deserved break than a sign that our plans are lacking. Of course, if there are flaws, adjustments may be necessary. Otherwise, we may need to rest or recuperate before pressing forward. The Moon spends the day in fair-minded Aquarius.
The void Moon occurs from 4:28 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a conjunction to Mercury), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Friday, January 15th, at 5:18 PM EST.
JANUARY 15
The Moon transits Aquarius until 5:18 PM EST, and we seek intellectual stimulation and unusual or unconventional experiences. The Aquarius Moon is earnest, friendly, and principled. Some emotional detachment can help us now. Note that the Moon continues to be void until the Moon enters Pisces, and it’s best not to begin all-new ventures. The Moon’s transit of Pisces from 5:18 PM EST is gentle, creative, and compassionate. It’s a good time for winding down or taking a break from the usual pace. Emotional or mental refreshment is useful for gaining perspective now. We head into “diffuse mode” to process and digest rather than focus too intently on specifics.
The void Moon continues until the Moon enters Pisces today at 5:18 PM EST.
JANUARY 16
The Moon spends the day in Pisces, harmonizing with Mars, Uranus, and Venus. We’re encouraged to wind down or mellow out, and we may seek novel creative outlets to do so. The Moon in Pisces transit can serve to heighten our awareness of our spiritual nature and needs. We can also be evasive, or we might shy away from conflict, especially confrontation. Mercury and Pallas align in the sign of Aquarius today, however, and we can be mentally active. A love for order in the world of ideas and problem-solving can figure strongly now. We’re especially concerned with what’s fair and just.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. Achievement and manifestation are most important to us now. We are resourceful and don't want to waste time, energy, or resources. This can be a very sober influence--even a depressing one. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.
The Moon in Capricorn generally favors the following activities: Long-term activities that yield slow but steady results, practical undertakings, career issues, making a business plan, practical investments.
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.
Mercury in Aquarius The tried and true doesn’t cut it anymore: it’s the new, the unique, and the original that catches and holds your interest now. Idealism, rationality, and critical thinking become more and more a part of your mental patterns and the way you communicate. You are inventive, original, high tech.
Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you’ve got, striving for security and stability: that’s the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That’s kid’s stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall – you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that’s your style now.
Jupiter in Aquarius Innovation, reform, and idealism are your paths to growth and gain now. New, futuristic ideas are part of this, but it’s more than that: putting them into practice is essential because this is much more than empty idealism. A break from the past, a willingness to flaunt convention.
Saturn in Aquarius Ideals are in for a period of testing, as a new phase begins in your life. What are principles worth, unless they are put into practice? That’s an important question for you now. This could mean you may be disappointed by causes you believe in – but if you abandon your principles, you lose.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone, and everyone in their place…
