The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 11:19 AM EDT.
On Monday, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Leo forms a square with the Scorpio Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we become aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error.
Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
The First Quarter Moon Chart:
This phase of the Moon occurs at 20 degrees and 24 minutes of Scorpio, square the Sun at the same degree of Leo, and affecting planets at approximately 18 to 22 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) the most.

This week: The Sun is in Leo; Mercury is in Virgo until the 14th, when it returns to Leo; Venus is in Virgo; Mars is in Gemini.
The Sun is in Leo from July 22-August 22. In Leo, the Sun is proud, outgoing, and playful. The Leo Sun is intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. It’s time to shine, add a touch of color and drama to our lives, and perform.
We’re blossoming–it’s a time when we want to enjoy ourselves and express ourselves. We are more generous and grand in our gestures and attitudes. On the shadow side, we can also be self-centered and vain.
While the Sun is in Leo, we take the high road, and we’re very often motivated by the idea of gaining respect and affection. We more naturally express joy, humor, and warmth during the Sun-in-Leo cycle. We also tend to take the lead or become the center of attention and activity.
Mercury is in Virgo from July 25-August 14 and later, September 9-26 [Lengthier transit of Virgo due to a Mercury retrograde period from August 5th to 28th, 2024]. When Mercury is in Virgo, precision in speech, thought, and process are more important to us. This is a time when we analyze and decide what is useful and what we deem to be impractical.
Mercury feels right at home in Virgo, one of the signs that it rules (Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo). Dealing with details is natural and easy now. We need to be careful that we don’t lose perspective if we find ourselves lost in details, however.
While Mercury is in Virgo, we should also be aware of the possibility of expressing ourselves in a too factual manner, so much so that we come across as dry, critical, or unimaginative.
We gravitate to useful information, and we can enjoy helping others with our knowledge. It’s a time for analyzing and dissecting, but we need other influences to put the pieces together or to see the bigger picture as our confidence in so doing is not strong at this time. It’s a time of conservative thinking and a strong tendency to want facts and certainties.
Mercury is in Leo from August 14-September 9 [Mercury was in Leo from July 2-25, entered Virgo, and due to a Mercury retrograde period from August 5th to 28th, 2024, returns to Leo]. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence.
We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. With this transit, we may not listen as well as we normally do since we’re very focused on our own ideas.
We’re also strong about making decisions ourselves and letting our voices and input be heard. This is not a time when we’re content with letting others make all the moves or decisions–we need to be involved. We take the lead, manage, direct, and create while Mercury is in Leo. We need to relate to information or create stories about it to absorb it well. During this cycle, we should watch for being too inflexible, proud, or haughty to change course.
Venus is in Virgo from August 4-29. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo.
Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual, but Virgo is also quite practical and mental. In addition to our romantic natures, what we purchase and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle are ruled by whether or not they make sense and serve a practical purpose.
We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners or relationships, picky, nervous, or worried.
During the Venus-in-Virgo cycle, we can gravitate to, and find some benefits in, holistic healing, acupuncture, yoga, and nutritional boosts. We’re keenly interested in ways to enrich our lives and boost our well-being. “Health is wealth” could be a motto now. In fact, we might enjoy health-boosting activities more than usual. Businesses promoting nutrition, wholesomeness, and well-being might prosper at this time. Commitment and attention to detail are also more prominently considered virtues now.
In love, we’re not very showy, flowery, or demonstrative. Instead, we show our love through being of service. We’re conservative with money, pleasure, and romance at this time, ready to analyze and dissect these matters. This can also be a time when helping others, particularly with good advice regarding these Venus-ruled things, can be prominent and successful. We might meet friends or lovers through our work or health-pursuits. We can take a special interest in handiwork, crafts, lists/sorting, and bookkeeping.
Mars is in Gemini from July 20-September 4. In Gemini, Mars is versatile and flexible but not especially determined or focused. We should watch for becoming so scattered that we’re ineffective. However, it’s an excellent period for diversifying our interests and understanding the power of our communications.
It’s an excellent time for strategizing and devising useful tactics to achieve our desires and goals. We’re resourceful and clever, and we know how to use words effectively.
Perhaps most notable during this period is our tactical skills. We know how to maneuver things to get our way. We use words to charm and express anger. We’re very talkative, and animatedly so, when passionate and enthusiastic about a topic.
.
Jupiter is in Gemini.
Jupiter began its transit of Gemini on May 24th, 2024, and continues its transit of the sign until June 9th, 2025. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Gemini.
Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces. Saturn will enter Aries on May 24th, 2025.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Pluto transitions from Capricorn to Aquarius in 2023 and 2024. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Pluto retrograded back into Capricorn, and was in Capricorn until January 20th, 2024. Pluto is in Aquarius from January 20th to September 1st, when it will retreat into Capricorn once again. Note: Pluto is slow-moving through the zodiac signs!
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from August 4-29. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love.
Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues.
As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
This week: On Sunday, there can be some reluctance to commit or to show our affections.
On Thursday and Friday, we are more communicative and diplomatic. We’re inclined to talk about our feelings, connections, affections, and relationships with a tendency to analyze the past.
On Saturday, we could be looking for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousies and insecurities are more prominent in our relationships. Some pulling back can occur due to being more self-conscious and cautious with our affections. Questions raised now can be challenging or traps rather than sincere concerns.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus conjunct retrograde Mercury August 7. We analyze feelings or relationships, particularly past ones. We tend to chat, socialize, and flatter, and we may be looking back and clarifying feelings or connections. We tend to intellectualize emotions and affections. This cooperative influence stimulates our desire for harmony and balance, and as a result, we may not dig too deeply. Our ideas feel new and exciting, even if we are doing some recycling of old perspectives.
Venus parallel Chiron August 10. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron August 11. Love cannot be forced. This is not a commitment-friendly transit, as we may feel alienated for no apparent reason and unwilling to give of ourselves.
Venus parallel Mercury August 15-16. A congenial time when we appreciate diplomacy and socialize more readily.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto August 17. Tendencies to look for something wrong in a relationship. Jealousy raises its ugly head.
Venus contra-parallel Saturn August 17. We may express our affection sparingly, but also responsibly and in practical ways. Relationships begun under this influence often feel burdensome over time, but they may last longer than most. Some pulling back can occur in relationships now, as we are more self-conscious and cautious with our affections.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Tuesday, August 13th, from 5:02 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Neptune), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 6:02 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, August 15th, from 12:53 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:52 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Saturday, August 17th, from 4:44 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Neptune), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 5:45 PM EDT.
August 2024:
Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waxing this week, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, although with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Thursday, August 15th, at approximately 1:55 PM EDT, until Saturday, August 17th, at approximately 4:40 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Capricorn. Note that this window is better after 3:30 AM on Friday due to a Mars-Saturn square early Friday. Note, too, that Mercury is retrograde during this window, which is a caveat.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Venus sesquiquadrate Chiron. Blocks to intimacy are possible now as we focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships with others. We might have a hard time learning from one another as a result.
Mars sesquiquadrature Pluto. Our desires are intense and difficult to satisfy under this influence. A tendency to bully and confront may dominate. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted, or power struggles emerge. The trick is to remain flexible and to develop strategies for achieving our goals.
Mercury quincunx Pluto. Something we write or say could trigger power struggles or hostility from others. We may be plagued with self-doubt in our attempts to make decisions. Decisions made now are unlikely to be objective. Re-assessing decisions we have made already, or adjusting our plans, may be in order. Second-guessing.
Mars conjunct Jupiter. This is a time when we possess a wealth of enthusiastic energy. We more readily take chances. We can have an insatiable appetite now. Our sense of timing is excellent. We feel strong, positive, adventurous, and energetic. Our goal is to expand. We are competitive in a friendly manner, and we readily rise to a challenge. We are decisive and actively pursue our goals. There is some danger, however, of overdoing.
Sun trine Chiron. A sense of purpose or a “mission” is with us now, increasing our confidence. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong. Problem solving is favored.
Mercury quincunx Neptune. There can be uncertainty and indecision now, as it can be difficult to draw upon intuition or to combine logic and intuition in a cohesive manner. Alternatively, the tendency to daydream can be high, and often at the expense of productivity and clear communication.
Mars square Saturn. Frustrations, smoldering anger, and a feeling of being blocked when we are attempting to go after what we want characterize this transit. Our desire to take action and to constructively express our aggressive urges feels thwarted or blocked. It can feel like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks.
Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto. This influence can point to some underlying tensions in social interactions (looking for an ulterior motive and suspiciousness) and relationships (possible jealousies). Passions run hot, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness can be brewing just under the surface of things, and they are in direct proportion to our fear of losing something or someone dear to us.

AUGUST 11
Today’s Moon is in Scorpio, and we’re deliberate, strategic, perceptive, and emotional. A Venus trine to Ceres encourages us to open up to nurture. As we pour more heart and special attention into a person, pastime, or project, we can feel pleasantly attached, finding it more natural to nurture and support people in our lives. However, with a minor challenging aspect between Venus and Chiron this evening, we can feel a little out of sync on a social level. There is some tendency to keep our emotional distance, and we tend to focus on differences rather than similarities in our relationships.
AUGUST 12
The Moon spends the day in Scorpio, and the First Quarter Moon occurs at 11:20 AM EDT. This transit encourages us to uncover the hidden layers of any given situation. We may feel some pressure to reach our goals, and obstacles encountered now can motivate us into action. Mars forms a minor square to Pluto today, suggesting a deeper investment in outcomes, as well as potential tensions if we don’t get our way. This transit adds an additional layer of pressure to the day, as we can be distracted, but it also presents an opportunity for us to overcome Pluto-related worries, concerns, and challenges, and achieve positive outcomes.
AUGUST 13
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 6:02 AM EDT, when it moves into Sagittarius and stirs our spirit for adventure. The Sagittarius Moon encourages our optimism and idealism. Emotional refreshment comes from new experiences and interesting topics of discussion or study. We’re looking ahead and seeking meaning. This Moon inspires us to seek out non-routine experiences, and a change of scenery is in order! However, we may be easily distracted in the hours surrounding the morning’s Moon-Mercury square. It can be challenging to express what we intend. Otherwise, we’re under the overall cheerful and hopeful influence of a Moon in Sagittarius, which should uplift our spirits and keep us positive today.
The Moon is void from 5:02 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Neptune), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 6:02 AM EDT.
AUGUST 14
Retrograde Mercury forms a quincunx with Pluto this morning. As Mercury covers old ground in its retrograde state, we return to a Mercury-Pluto quincunx that first occurred on July 26th. Decisions are hard to make now, and we may not only second-guess others but also our own perceptions. However, Mars aligns with Jupiter in Gemini, which is forward-looking, confident energy. Taking action comes more readily. This transit excites our senses. We want to reach beyond our usual bounds. It’s a time when we possess a wealth of enthusiastic energy, and we’re ready to take chances. Our goal is to expand. We feel strong, optimistic, adventurous, and motivated. We are competitive and decisive, and we readily rise to a challenge and actively pursue our goals. There is some danger, however, of overdoing. We may be overly confident, boastful, or pushy with our opinions. Or we can take on too much, overestimating our capabilities. With Mars and Jupiter in Gemini, we see opportunities to grow and succeed through intellectual, verbal, and written channels. However, we should be cautious and balanced. We need to watch for taking on too many diverse plans or pursuits. Our desires are big, and the details will need to follow later.
Retrograde Mercury returns to Leo this evening. Mercury will transit until September 9th, but will only be retrograde in the sign until August 28th. We may be especially distracted during the retrograde period. When Mercury is in Leo, we are more expressive, even theatrical, convincing, and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. During the retrograde in Leo, we can be learning (or relearning) what we love doing, looking back to analyze past romantic relationships or creative projects, and preparing, rehearsing, and redoing scenarios before expressing them. We may be reviewing or reassessing our attitudes or decisions related to romance, creative projects, entertainment, children, and leisure until the 28th.
AUGUST 15
Despite the challenges, today offers opportunities for growth and learning. Retrograde Mercury’s quincunx with Neptune may bring some mental disorganization, but the Sun’s trine to Chiron encourages a holistic approach to problem-solving. This can lead to learning, growth, and improvement, particularly through creativity, self-assertion, and courage. By being less concerned about who’s right or wrong, we can be more open to learning and growing. Our egos don’t get in the way, which helps us make real progress. We’re putting our respect in the right places, and the chance to find a sense of purpose or a “mission” can arise now, increasing our confidence.
As the day progresses, we approach a Mars-Saturn square, exact very early tomorrow, and energies shift considerably. Ambitions and accomplishments are firmly on our minds, but there may be obstacles to surmount. We could feel blocked from asserting ourselves or pursuing our desires. It’s a time to slow down and make adjustments and edits, as we may encounter resistance if we push ahead. It can seem like more effort than usual is required to complete tasks. We might deal with disapproval or a dip in confidence, and we should draw on patience and aim to develop our endurance. It’s a better time for maintenance than it is for moving forward. Recognizing our limits and adjusting our speed accordingly is key.
The Moon is void from 12:53 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 1:52 PM EDT.
AUGUST 16
The Mars-Saturn square perfects early today, presenting obstacles or blocks to our desires. It’s better to slow down, rest, and conserve our energy for more flowing times. Mercury’s quintile to Jupiter this morning is subtle energy, but it’s good for rounding out our thinking. Our ideas are particularly clever, and focusing on intellectual interests and problem-solving can be especially successful now. With a parallel between Mercury and Venus, we tend to analyze our feelings and relationships today. Today’s Capricorn Moon, however, is serious, goal-oriented, and practical.
AUGUST 17
Venus and Pluto form a sesquiquadrate aspect today, pointing to underlying tensions in our social interactions and relationships. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness can be brewing just under the surface of things, and they are directly proportional to our fear of losing something or someone. Manipulation can color relationships, or financial tensions emerge. Still, it can also be a time to recognize our suppressed needs and desires. Getting into a healthier relationship with these buried needs can help, and later today, the Moon’s alignment with Pluto can invite us to explore our less apparent ambitions. The Moon continues its transit of cautious Capricorn until 5:45 PM EDT, when it moves into Aquarius, and we awaken to possible ways to improve our lives and make progress. The Aquarius Moon stirs our desire to mingle and share.
The Moon is void from 4:44 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Neptune), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 5:45 PM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
When the Moon is in Sagittarius
The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".
The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.
When the Moon is in Capricorn
We become aware of the need for structure and planning ahead. We also instinctively are aware of the limitations of time. We are motivated by a desire for success. However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.

This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.

Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Leo “This I do for me” is your motto at a time like this. This is your time to shine, like a swirl of star stuff that has finally reached critical mass and suddenly starts to give off more light than it receives. Issues of pride, mastery, and appreciation become more and more central to your life stream as this cycle progresses, as does a very important lesson: it’s not what you do so much as how you do it, not who you are so much as how you make others feel about themselves. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it shouldn’t matter now.
Mercury in Virgo Mental discipline and patience are keynoted as you enter into a new cycle. Thinking things through, accounting for all the details, making careful measurements: these and similar experiences keep your mind active and involved. An interest in health and work may come to the fore.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Mars in Gemini Learning, communicating, the exchange of ideas: these are the experiences you crave as a means to make your mark now, as a new phase begins in your life. You’re a person with something to say, and you realize that others have information that is essential to your goals. A time of much mental energy and initiative … perhaps with an element of conflict tossed in for good measure.
Jupiter in Gemini Facilitating the transfer of ideas and information takes on a special priority for you now. Writing, studying, and communicating play a bigger role in your life as a result. The belief that well-informed people will make the right decisions becomes an article of faith. Just remember: sometimes people know the right thing to do and STILL do something different!
Saturn in Pisces Making peace with the past, coming to terms with karmic debts: these are some of the issues that confront you as a new phase begins in your life. Failure to face these things can cause setbacks and put obstacles in your path. Learn to look beyond the narrowly personal and selfish or you’ll get in over your head.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance.
