The FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Friday, October 27th, 2017, at 6:22 PM EDT.
On Friday evening, the First Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Scorpio forms a square with the Moon in Aquarius.
There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.
This phase of the Moon occurs at 4 degrees and 41 minutes of Aquarius forming a square with the Sun at 4 degrees and 41 minutes of Scorpio, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 3 to 7 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.
The NEW MOON occurred on Thursday, October 19th, 2017, at 3:13 PM EDT.
On Thursday afternoon, a New Moon occurred in the sign of Libra. This is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Scales.
We have a chance to build our negotiating skills without compromising our principles or needs, and without resorting to appeasement. It’s a time to work on re-balancing our relationships and to recognize our partners as teammates rather than adversaries.
With this potent Libra energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives. Some of Libra’s “lessons” involve learning to make peace with those around us, as well as in our environments, establishing a sense of order and balance in our lives, and recognizing the value of partnerships. This is an ideal time to work on these skills. Libra has an innate ability for, and love of, synthesizing opposites. Peace and harmony are the goals, but there’s a fine balancing act involved along the way that requires some commitment and effort.
This New Moon brings fresh and creative energy into our lives, and more specifically, into our relationships. This is a cycle in which balancing our close personal relationships becomes an urgent desire. Negotiations may be especially effective, as we are inclined to assert our needs in ways that don’t offend others. However, with the New Moon opposing Uranus very tightly, we’re likely to encounter resistance from others and from within. This energy is rebellious and touchy, particularly if we feel constrained by partnership. Its sextile to Saturn suggests opportunities to make alternative setups work for us.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 26 degrees and 35 minutes of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 24 to 30 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

The Sun is in Libra until the 23rd, when the Sun enters Scorpio; Mercury is in Scorpio; Venus is in Libra; Mars is in Virgo until the 22nd, when it enters Libra.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker. However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
The Sun is in Scorpio from October 23-November 21. The guiding principle of Scorpio is “I desire”. Scorpio is the sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio. We have the desire to get to the bottom of matters. Mediocrity does not satisfy either. All that is hidden, taboo, secret, or suppressed interests us. In Libra, we strived towards equality and fairness. Scorpio, however, instinctively believes that life simply isn’t fair. Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way, as well as passionate, strong-willed, and intense. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Jealousy, vindictiveness, beating a dead horse, and manipulative are some of the more negative expressions of Scorpio.
Mercury is in Scorpio from October 17-November 5. When Mercury is in Scorpio, our thoughts and communications are more probing and intense. While Mercury in Libra urged us to find balance and to arrive at fair solutions, Mercury in Scorpio instinctively knows that life simply isn’t fair. Mercury in Scorpio seeks truths in all that is hidden and undercover. We tend to probe, observe, and focus our thoughts under this influence. Looking for motivations–the more deeply buried the better–satisfies an intellectual need now. Our thoughts are profound. We throw away superficial manners of communicating in favor of deep conversations. Scorpio is extremely sharp, profound, and analytical. Thinking is inclined to be one-track minded, focused, and even obsessive.
Venus is in Libra from October 14-November 7. We are more inclined to employ charm rather than aggressive behavior in order to get what we want during this cycle. Although Venus in Libra virtually lives for relationships, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We are very obliging with others–quite willing to negotiate and compromise. We can be especially idealistic about love. We prefer things to be done the “right” way, and we’re turned off by aggressive or uncouth behavior. The shadow side of this position is dependence, inconsistency, and superficiality. In an attempt to avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It’s probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to our partners but privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so! This is also a time when we are more artistically inclined. We tend to seek balance in our personal environment.
Mars is in Virgo from September 5-October 22. In Virgo, Mars is somewhat of a workhorse. We have a passion for details, as well as a need to do the right thing at just the right time under this influence. The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now. We are more precise and concerned about performance.
Mars is in Libra from October 22-December 9. We tend to use our charm as a means to an end under the influence of this cycle. Because we can see many different sides to an issue, we can be vacillating and indecisive about how to act. We don’t want to be the “bad guy”, and rarely resort to force. Instead, we attempt to win arguments with style. We are indirect in approach and inclined towards engaging in mental debates, yet we also attempt to make the opposition comfortable! Passive-aggressiveness is the shadow side of this energy.
Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015, to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius here.
Jupiter entered Scorpio on October 10th and will remain in the sign until November 8th, 2018. Read about Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011 and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Libra from October 14-November 7. We are more inclined to employ charm rather than aggressive behavior in order to get what we want during this cycle. Although Venus in Libra virtually lives for relationships, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We are very obliging with others–quite willing to negotiate and compromise. We can be especially idealistic about love. We prefer things be done the “right” way, and are turned off by aggressive or uncouth behavior.
This week: Venus forms a square to Pluto on Friday, the 27th, and interactions can be loaded in direct proportion to our fear of losing something or someone. This is a time to watch for manipulating appearances and people in our lives to get what we want.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Libra October 14-November 7. As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty – these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.
Venus contraparallel Mars October 19-20. Passions are stimulated and intense. There’s a fine line between love and hate. Competitiveness. Questions are raised or ultimatums made.
Venus square Pluto October 27. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Jealousy and possessiveness are high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies.
Venus sextile North Node October 30-31. There is a stronger desire to connect to and belong with others at this time. We are more obliging and sociable.
Venus parallel Neptune November 1-2. Heightened sensitivity to, and awareness of, beauty and spirituality. We are easily influenced, seducible and seductive, and given to strong powers of imagination. We are more attuned to the world of beauty and romance. Gentleness with others is the best way to harness this energy. A “magical” time on a romantic and social level, but it could also be a confusing or illusory influence as well. Psychic openness and compassion.
Venus quincunx Chiron November 2-3. There may be vague feelings of discontent in relationships; or a choice that needs to be made regarding personal relationships, money, or possessions. Insecurity involving others might make it awkward for us to express our affections naturally or flowingly.
Venus sextile Saturn November 2-3. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor.
Venus opposition Uranus November 3-4. This is not an ideal time to begin relationships. Independence is the reigning need. Some fickleness. Uncertainty about the desire to be close to someone. Freedom versus closeness.
Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune November 4. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, October 22nd, from 7:37 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 7:58 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, October 24th, from 12:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 8:13 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, October 27th, from 1:23 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 8:59 AM EDT.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mercury semi-square Saturn. Red tape, re-doing tasks we thought we had finished, problems getting from point A to point B, delays in communication, negative thinking, hypersensitivity and criticism–these are all potentials now. The energy is best used for focusing on fixing errors rather than harping on how irritating they are!
Mercury sesquiquadrate Chiron. Communications may be careless, hurtful or perceived as hurtful under this influence. It can be hard to read the intention behind the words used to communicate now. There may be impatience with rules, worry or guilty feelings, and conflicting viewpoints now.
Venus quincunx Neptune. Under this influence, we are apt to see what we want to see, rather than what actually is, when it comes to both financial affairs and affairs of the heart. Still, we tend to doubt our perceptions of perfection. The end result is a feeling of insecurity on romantic and social levels. Avoid making large purchases and commitments at this time.
Mercury trine Neptune. Imagination and intuition run high and are involved in decisions made today. We are in the right place at the right time. We may easily sense the thoughts and feelings of others. We express ourselves with subtle flair. Favors photography, the arts, poetry, fiction, spirituality, advertising, and promotion.
Sun conjunct Jupiter. Vitality increases as we build our confidence. We feel more generous, optimistic, and sociable under this influence. We might hunger for increased recognition and respect, and, with our generous attitude and concern for others’ well-being, we might just get what we want. This is a good time to take steps to grow something–our business, our significant relationships, and so forth. This transit also favors legal, educational, religious, and cultural endeavors.
Venus square Pluto. Intense passions, but there’s a hidden agenda. Feelings of jealousy and possessiveness run high, in direct proportion to fear of losing partnership. Avoid starting a new relationship at this time, because it can be characterized by these energies. Social interactions may be intense or could provoke intense feelings. Changes in financial status or relationships may occur now. Emotions and issues in a close relationship that have been brewing beneath the surface for quite a while come to the surface at this time, possibly in a very disruptive way. All of our relationships intensify and we need to be aware of a tendency to act in a rather compulsive, demanding way towards others. This is an “all or nothing” energy. Manipulative behavior, fear of betrayal, and power struggles are possible.
Mercury sextile Pluto. We possess more insight and psychological understanding than usual. We are willing to look beyond the surface of things and investigate further. Perhaps more importantly, we are more patient and strategic in our decision-making.

OCTOBER 22
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 7:58 AM EDT, after which it rouses our desire for more adventure, learning, and life experience in the sign of Sagittarius. The Moon catches a sextile to Mars this morning just before both bodies change signs, emotionalizing our desires, particularly those we’ve discovered last minute. There can be a feeling of urgency now. Mars enters Libra this afternoon, where it will transit until December 9th. Mars is in its detriment in Libra (Libra opposes Mars-ruled Aries). Mars is not as comfortable in Libra as it is in most other signs, and therefore it’s not functioning at its best. We may be indirect in our approach and should watch for passive-aggressiveness during this cycle. This is a time for actively seeking out harmony and balance. A Mercury-Saturn semi-square can challenge conversations and decisions today. This energy is best used for focusing on fixing errors rather than harping on them! With Mars changing signs today and the Sun tomorrow, we’re in a state of flux and should avoid important decision-making if possible.
The Moon is void from 7:37 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mars), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 7:58 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 23
The Sun enters Scorpio early today and will transit the sign until November 21st. Scorpio is a sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality or mediocrity simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio! We have the desire to get to the bottom of matters during this cycle. The Moon spends the day in Sagittarius, however, and we seek more freedom, breadth, and truth. A Mercury-Chiron challenge suggests some impatience with rules, worry or guilty feelings, and conflicting viewpoints today.
OCTOBER 24
With Mercury forming a trine to Neptune today, our words and thoughts can be more imaginative and colorful, subtle, or creative. We experience a sense of knowing and understanding with minimal explanation or instruction. Intuition is highlighted or awakened now. This is a good influence for photography, the arts, poetry, fiction, spirituality, advertising, and promotion. This is an excellent time for understanding one another and for feeling good about giving others the benefit of the doubt. We can feel empowered by our charitable qualities. We might choose to team up to generate ideas and solve problems. Today is strong for mental rapport. The Moon spends much of the day in truth-seeking, courageous Sagittarius. At 8:13 PM EDT, the Moon enters Capricorn and our focus turns to our goals and performance.
A void of course Moon occurs from 12:46 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Uranus), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 8:13 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 25
The Moon is in Capricorn all day, harmonizing with the Sun, Jupiter, and Neptune. With the emotional Moon in this practical sign, we look for ways to make us feel more secure and in control of our lives. While we may be focusing on practical affairs, we also have opportunities to draw upon our inner wisdom and intuition to understand what’s happening around us. Previously hidden or unacknowledged talents may emerge now because we need them. This combination encourages our ambitions and resourcefulness. The Sun and Jupiter are moving towards a conjunction, exact tomorrow afternoon, stimulating positive visions of the future and a sense of new hope.
OCTOBER 26
The Moon continues its transit of Capricorn today, and we’re concerned with plans, rules, and performance. While the Capricorn Moon can find us unusually protective of our vulnerabilities, especially with its alignment to Pluto today, tonight’s Moon-Chiron sextile helps us put our soft spots to work for us, especially through guidance and support of others. The Sun forms its annual conjunction to Jupiter today, this year in the sign of Scorpio, and we can be especially aware of our desire to excel in the emotional realms. This is a time of discovery and a renewed sense of joy, faith, and optimism. Vitality increases as we build our confidence. We’re more generous, optimistic, and sociable under this influence. We might seek increased recognition and respect, and, with our generous, liberal attitude, this may very well be forthcoming. Going forward, it’s an excellent time to take steps to grow something important to us. We can feel determined and confident about making profound, long-lasting changes to improve our lives. This transit also favors reasonable legal, educational, religious, financial, and cultural endeavors.
OCTOBER 27
The Moon completes its transit of Capricorn this morning at 8:59 AM EDT when it enters Aquarius. While the Moon in Aquarius is cool and detached, this evening, the First Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Scorpio forms a square with the Moon in Aquarius. The Moon in Aquarius seeks impartiality, but its square to the Scorpio Sun suggests difficulties detaching. As well, Venus forms a square to Pluto tonight, stimulating difficult dynamics, awareness of hidden agendas, and attempts to manipulate others and situations to get our way. Social interactions may be intense or could provoke intense feelings. A Mercury-Pluto sextile occurring at virtually the same time (Mercury and Venus are semi-sextile one another) is intense as well, but in a more productive way, encouraging us to get to the root of a problem. We are willing to look beyond the surface of things and investigate further. A deep insight happening now helps us make better choices. Conversations are probing, investigative, and meaningful.
A void of course Moon occurs from 1:23 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Aquarius at 8:59 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 28
The Moon spends the day in Aquarius, harmonizing with Venus and forming a challenging square to Mercury. We want to cooperate and harmonize with one another, but we could be saying the wrong things or misinterpreting one another now. Friends, community, groups, causes, and happiness goals can be in stronger focus now. Also today, we may be questioning our skills, talents, or plans. Our ability to see things clearly or rationally can be compromised by ego issues, lack of confidence, or outside interference. We should watch for taking on too much or wasting energy with Mars semi-sextile Jupiter exact early into the day tomorrow.

Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Sun in Scorpio Who owes what, who owns what, and who decides these things: these are some of the major issues for you at the dawn of the cycle that now begins in your life. The only thing we really own is our consciousness; the only master who is never overthrown is oneself. These are lessons best learned early in this cycle. Master them, and you master everything. Dodge these issues, and the great strength that could be yours will remain just out of reach. Understanding inner motivations, seeing through to the core: that’s your real path of power and enlightenment now.
Mercury in Scorpio A pronounced curiosity about taboos and mysteries plays a greater part in your life now. Your mind is on cutting through the nonessentials and penetrating to the core is where your mind is at now; you want to know who (or what) pulls the strings. Sex, taxes, investments, and others of life’s most compelling phenomena may captivate your interest more than ever before.
Venus in Libra As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty – these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.
Mars in Virgo As a new cycle dawns in your life, there arises a passion for details, a need to do just the right thing at just the right time, and a burning desire to have a place for everything and everything in its place. This can be hard on the digestion if taken to extremes! The satisfaction of a job well done is one of your greatest incentives now.
Mars in Libra “I’m giving you a definite maybe” – that’s the motto of the cycle you’re now entering. It’s a time of refinement and tact, of an urge to please others that is so strong as to make it hard to decide or act for fear of offending someone. You’ll quickly learn to balance this out, or you’ll discover that there is no peace in compromise – and this can be tough on close relationships. The trick is to find the win-win solution to the no-win situation – and if anyone’s ever up to it, you are now.
Jupiter in Scorpio The phase now beginning for you emphasizes fixing what is broken or unhealthy, thereby giving it a new lease on life. This is more than one person alone can handle, so the cooperation of others is essential. You give up something in order to get or create something, and you may not understand the reasons why at the time. Sex, money, power, and vitality become key issues.
Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.” Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.
Uranus in Aries A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way.
